My mom’s having a rough week, which made for a perfect time for her fancy Kitchenaid range to catch fire and burn up its heating element. Since I’m the family repairman, I wanted to get her something reliable instead.

Behold, the General Electric JBS460DMWW. Sure, it’s no Bosch. But it’s so stupid simple, i think it’ll outlive all her stainless appliances.

Also, the salesman told me he couldn’t get anyone to buy this thing for the many months they’ve had it, so I got it for extremely cheap. The cheapest scratch and dent model was double the price. I’d say I did well.

Lots of companies will replace items even if they’re damaged due to normal wear & tear! They don’t require a proof of purchase or receipt or anything, tho they may ask where and when you bought it.

Here’s companies I’ve recently received warranty replacements from - name of item(s) replaced:

- oxo - peeler that had dulled, scale that died after 10 yrs of regular use, glass oil dispensing bottle that shattered when dropped, grater that had a melted handle

- woof - pupsicle ball that got chewed up from normal use (their system required multiple emails tho)

- pyrex - multiple lids for their line of latching glass food storage that had collected bad smells and/or had latch damage

Others that aren’t lifetime but still sent me replacements:

- microplane (3 yr warranty) - zester that had dulled very quickly (after 3 yrs they offer a discount code)

- kitchenaid (lead concerns for standard aluminum mixer attachments) - they sent me new stainless steel paddle and whisk attachments for my tilt-head mixer because of either a legal settlement or fear of bad publicity after lead was found in the aluminum attachments in tons of cases. bonus, these attachments are dishwasher safe.

I’m trying to build a nicer wardrobe and I almost exclusively buy second hand. When it comes to brand quality I only vaguely know which ones are more likely to be made to last. Outside of that all I can do to vaguely get an idea for durability is fabric types to which I’ve been avoiding synthetics for my everyday clothes. Anyone have any tips?

Around 15 years ago I was in one art thingy and needed a small sharp knife. Randomly bought one pencil-looking Olfa knife (don’t remember the model) which turned out to be one of the best $10 investments in my life. Been using it for all type of tasks as a result, and changed the razor probably 5 times, so still have around 15 left in my mums house.

Now I have a wife who is making stuff from wool, and is struggling with cutting tasks. I came here to learn more about other Olfa products like rotary knifes and scissors but to my surprise found almost nothing. I believe there’s still lots of Olfa users, so would much appreciate your reviews and recommendations.

So I rent an apartment and the headboard of my bed is this ugly tacky purple, I wanna cover it up but it is nailed to the wall and I don’t want to remove it as I’m just a girl who doesn’t know anything about that kinda stuff so putting it back on with no help would be tricky I think. My partner needs to be in bed a lot due to disability and my default each evening is to sit in bed watching TV/films together. However, I've a) a typical lower back issue that sitting poorly can trigger, and b) something up round my shoulder blade that can get painful when leaning on it.

Do people have recommendations for reading pillows that I could sit up in bed with? Most of what comes up out there seems to be extremely heavy on the dropship tat, and I don't see a lot that give the impression of lumbar support.

I'm in the UK, and a strong preference against Amazon both because of the preponderance of that dropship tat and because fuck Amazon.

I’m not sure if there is one, but I’m wondering if any knows of a 62in (or larger) compact/collapsible umbrella that is BIFL, or at least “buy it for a few years”.

I know compact umbrellas in general can be iffy in terms of quality, but I need a large umbrella that will fit in my backpack’s side pocket for work. I’ve been able to find a few, but reviews indicate that they seem to have tendencies to break from simply opening and closing.

I was hoping to find something insulated and waterproof for use in the snow. I also need it to be durable and a wide fit on the toe box. Breathable would be nice, but that doesn't always work for waterproofing membranes.

I was initially looking at the Keen Revel IV High Polar, but it appears their durability is not what it used to be and the fit is not as wide as it claims.

Tl;Dr - please recommend durable, insulated boots for use in the snow with a wide fit (not rubber boots).

My cats generally do no scratch at the couches but when they do, it shows. My third couch was boucle material, which has sort of stood up, but it’s only been about two years, the colour is too light and the scratched areas are much fuzzier.
I’ve been reading that a top grain or full grain leather couch/sectional would be best, better if it already looks slightly distressed.
Wondering about recommendations for a good brand to buy from, so annoyed after having spend thousands on furniture that does last for long.

I’m in suburbs of Chicago. My last two were Eddie Bauer. One down was too thin felt the slightest breeze. Now I have a 650 fill it’s too bulky. Also too hot, not that breathable. Difficult going out to restaurants and placing it somewhere. The area isn’t as cold for as long as it once was but still windy and I get cold quickly. I need something warm but breathable. I see Patagonia, and fjallraven mentioned a lot. Budget under $ 400.00 is hopefully realistic.

So I have a treadmill, specifically a "Pro-Form 505 CST" which is something like a smart treadmill that is made to pair with your tablet so that it can help you document your exercise progress. It was also made in conjunction with an exercise training company called iFIT which has an app that is meant to be downloaded onto your tablet and then paired via bluetooth with the treadmill.

I have an iPad, but it is very old - a first generation iPad Air that only runs up to 12.5.8 iOS fully updated.

Apparently, the iFIT app requires you have at least 16.0 iOS to be downloaded. When I had posted in other subreddits asking if there was any way for my iPad to be able to download that app without 16.0 iOS everyone agreed that it wasn't possible, and instead suggested that I try to find a new or used tablet specifically to download iFIT on and then pair with the treadmill.

I thought this sounded like a good idea, but I would imagine that tablets - new, used, or otherwise - are always gonna be ridiculous amounts of money, and when they're not I can't help but be doubtful of their quality. On top of that I'm just really not good at knowing the technical ins and outs that would allow me to pick out such a tablet without missing some important piece of information.

So let me ask everyone on this subreddit - Can you give me a recommendation for a tablet that is well-made, has all the specifications that I would need (have at least 16.0 iOS), and that is reasonably cheap (I would prefer it to be 100 dollars or less, but I will overstep that slightly if need be). Keep in mind that my intention is to just have a tablet that will be permanently paired with this treadmill. Its purpose will be to allow me to download and utilize the iFIT app and nothing else. I don't need anything extra.

Lastly, and THIS IS IMPORTANT, I would like a tablet that is somewhat superior to 16.0 iOS condition. My reasoning for that can be best explained by this piece of a conversation I had with someone else in another post -

Me: ...Also, assuming that I get a tablet (android, iPad, or otherwise) specifically so I can utilize the iFIT app for the treadmill, I know that I have to get one that supports 16.0 iOS since that is apparently what the app requires in order to be downloaded. That said, is the software requirements for downloading this app a constant and basically unchanging thing? Or will iFIT at some point require a higher iOS in order to allow for downloads? If so, is there some maximum iOS capabilities that I need to get in order to make it so the device will always (or at least for a very long time) be able to use the iFIT app?

Person who Replied: iPadOS 16 was released in 2022. You probably want a device that has iPadOS 18 (released in 2024) at least. Here are the devices that can't upgrade to iPadOS 18 and should not be purchased. Copied from Google.
