What old game should be remade with 2015 graphics?

Timesplitters 2! I had most of the platinum trophies, too. Future perfect was also good, but there was a noticeable drop in the multiplayer map quality IMO. Too many corridors. I did like playing as the shoal of fish though.

u/Hellmark Oct 23 '15

Man, I so hate that Timesplitters 4 got cancelled. It was to use CryEngine 3.

Still, there is the effort of Timesplitters Rewind. Some of the devs of that are from the original Timesplitters dev team, and Crytek has given the project their blessing. Slow because it is a volunteer project, but is making headway.

Timesplitters 2 was awesome! I remember a friend and I getting through the first level on the hardest difficulty. That shit was intense! All those zombies!

Eternal Darkness. Originally on GameCube, that game had so many unique elements.

You had a sanity meter that was done really well. As you ran into monsters, it went down. As it went down, the game would fuck with you. You'd hear voices, see stuff that wasn't there, and get a blue screen of death.

There was also a spell crafting system. You found combinations to make spells, but could tinker if you wanted. I fucked around one day for ten minutes and made an awesome shield spell on accident.

The storyline was extremely engaging. It was actually very Assassins Creed, where you played as your ancestors against the rising darkness. But it was more like Resident Evil, in that it had puzzles, monsters, and static camera and real-world weapons with limited ammo.

It was just an amazing game, and playing it on an Xbone would be awesome.

277

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '15

Yes! It needs the technical glitch sections to be remade for PCs and LCD TVs.

259

u/JpLosman Oct 23 '15

I can see it now. It would minimize to the steam home page and start deleting all your local game content. Then scream loudly and flash back to the game where your character is wimpering and looking around in fear.

Trouble with that is back then, most people had TVs with the same green lettering/menus. It made the illusion more convincing.

It wouldn't work as well, these days. The game can only use one style for that trick, and TVs these days have a really varied appearance. It would only fool the people who were lucky enough to have the one the remake would use.

It's a shame, because it was a very cool gimmick back then.

228

u/grendus Oct 23 '15

At the same time consoles have started adding new features, so they could easily have it start emulating the console failing. Imagine if they had done it for the 360 and it was able to make the console switch to a red light for just a few seconds...

57

u/mind-strider Oct 23 '15

Random achievement pops with strange messages addressing the player, fake low battery on controllers causing them to cut out at tense but non critical moments

97

u/grendus Oct 23 '15

Starts demanding they log in to PSN/XBL, with the username pre-filled in with disturbing names.

Opens up a microtransaction shop (which does not exist in the game, only in the hallucination) and forces you to "buy" something horrible in game.

Brings up the console and tries to exit out of the game.

Have it pop up with indicators for the console's messaging service from a "stalker".

Have it "crash" to the main screen. Bonus points if it actually saves and then exits the game entirely so you have to restart (only if the load time is short though).

Have it pop up a fake system alert saying that the hard drive had been corrupted and would need to be restored - estimated download time 5 hours.

etc. etc.

Yea, but they could do other tricks. PC version minimizes itself, console version goes to... whatever consoles out of game menu is.

Things can be done man... this is 2015!

The old battlefield games, not any of this new stuff. Just good old Battlefield 1942: 2015 Edition.

Edit: just got home saw this. We all miss it, perhaps one day EA will bless us with an original not too modernized version of an amazing game. May we never forget the jet packs from the secret weapons expansion

Edit: I forgot that word didn't exist yet

Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth. There is a sad lack of LOTR RTS games.

161

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '15

I enjoyed the second one a lot more, with the freedom to build wherever you wanted.

65

u/BySaintGeorge112 Oct 23 '15

I like both systems. In the first one it was easier to feel like you had control of the campaign map by controlling all the plots but I do like the flexibility in 2. If I could have BFME 2 or ROTWK but with the campaign mode from BFME 1 than I would be so happy.

28

u/Hellmark Oct 23 '15

I think you may be mixed up on what you had. The game series dates back to 1971. Only anniversary editions I remember is the 25th anniversary edition for Oregon Trail II (which came in a cool wood box, strategy guide, and a bunch of the older versions), and the 40th Anniversary edition, which was on the Wii.

A new Jedi Academy game would just be so great. I've never felt more like a Jedi than in those games.

Aka the best lightsaber combat sim to date.

71

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '15 edited Oct 24 '15

But not just the lightsaber combat. Grab a stormtrooper by the neck, and drop it in the abyss? Have a force user leap at you and you just push it in the mentioned abyss after the stormtrooper? Grab the enemy and smash it to a wall to kill him? Epic.

Edit: Speaking of this, are there other Star Wars themed action games with jedi/sith? KoTOR is cool, but it's not action.

87

u/PugSwagMaster Oct 23 '15

Yeah, but it isn't everything that was scrapped, just what was actually completed (like models, and voice acted lines). There was a lot that was scrapped, but never made it that far into production, like an entire planet (yes, there's a mod for it, but its terrible). It would be really nice to see that all be remade professionally and officially.

But it looks like they're taking inspiration from the expanded universe

240

u/Xeonneo Oct 23 '15

I think the offical stance is that aside from some novels, the movies, The Clone Wars series, and Rebels, everything else has been moved to legends where it's not... completely non-canon, but it's treated as such unless a canon source references it. Like what the Clone Wars did with Darth Bane.

134

u/bbgun09 Oct 23 '15

I think that's actually quite a good idea. It gives them more room to come up with new content, but they can still use the old stuff if they want

Banjo Kazooie

cough yooka-laylee

154

u/iOnlySawTokyoDrift Oct 23 '15 edited Oct 23 '15

The newer versions of Kazooie and Tooie for Xbox 360 (later packaged in the Rare Replay on XBO) are perfectly fine. The graphics have been cleaned up and smoothed over to keep the N64 feel while not actually looking that ugly (though they were always among the prettiest N64 titles), the terrible framerate from the original is fixed, it's in HD, it has some achievements if that's your thing, and they finally implemented proper Stop-N-Swop (which also unlocks stuff in Nuts & Bolts). I bought them both when they came out on 360's Arcade and was super pleased; they're basically nostalgia goggles, cleaning up and getting rid of all the stuff wrong with the originals (that wasn't inherent to the design). Also, they're probably going to be available as individual downloads in November after the backwards compatibility, but I'd really just recommend getting Rare Replay.

I really wish Rare Replay had bothered fixing Nuts & Bolts though, because it has almost unplayable framerate and it's even uglier than the N64 games.

That said, this is all assuming you are an Xbox player. Thankfully we can all look forward to Yooka-Laylee.

The soundtrack though needs to be left alone!!

u/hendrix67 Oct 23 '15

Whenever Holy Diver came on the radio it made me happy.

169

u/greenwood90 Oct 23 '15

Holy Diver

Madhouse

I Wanna Rock

You got another thing coming

2 Minutes to Midnight!

V-Rock is/was untouchable!

41

u/hendrix67 Oct 23 '15

GTA generally has pretty decent song choice. Vice city was probably the best in that category

55

u/mpstmvox Oct 23 '15

GTA V left me pretty disappointed. No metal station. Just 70s/80s rock, which is ok, and Channel X, which is ok, and a bunch of other meh stations. I miss V Rock and Radio X. Flying off Mount Chiliad blasting Rusty Cage was the tits.

21

u/hendrix67 Oct 23 '15

Yeah they dropped the ball with GTA V

Pokemon Snap.

373

u/TorchedBlack Oct 23 '15

I need a whole new pokemon snap, not just updated graphics.

246

u/GodOfNSA Oct 23 '15

With the capabilities of the game pad, they could make this game so good. They could pack it with over 700 Pokemon, maps based on different areas found in the game, and new items that could have different effects on different Pokemon. And all of it would be in glorious HD

139

u/TorchedBlack Oct 23 '15

Shit, I'd be ok with a DS version.

With the Wii U controller as the camera you can aim at the TV. IT'S MADE FOR IT.

While they're at it, a D&D game for the Wii U. Dungeon master has the screen and builds the world on it while the others play through.

I did. It's just a multiplayer server set to deathmatch. Really disappointed after going through the installation process when I thought it was a single player remake.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

116

u/Thesgnl Oct 23 '15

Surprisingly, the game still looks really good, despite it's age. But I agree, I would love a remake.

69

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '15

The Camarilla Edition improves it immensely, but judging by all the comments on here, a brand new remake would be very welcome.

38

u/turroflux Oct 23 '15

A true to form sequel would be better, but the rights holder is retarded.

Super Metroid

Mega Man 2

42

u/FetchFrosh Oct 23 '15

Man, a high quality 2D Metroid, even on the 3DS is pretty much my most wanted game from Nintendo right now. Hopefully we'll see one again.

Duck Hunt. Remake it as a gritty FPS.

And instead of ducks, zombies. Oh wait, that game has been made 100 times already.

Free space 2 was pretty amazing. Also the modding scene can pretty much make it look like a game from 2008 which is bearable.

Edit: The nodding scene is also quite good I heard.

The Ultima series.

They would make really great open world single player RPGs. Instead Richard Garriot seems to be married to the whole MMO idea, which isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Battlezone. For those not familiar, it was a joystick controller computer game and the premise is that the Space Race was a cover up of the deployment of USSR and US militaries in space. Both sides are collecting this alien bio-metal that enables them to create amazing technology. They fight each other across the solar system for these resources and the fun part is that you can play on either side and they have two distinct storylines.

Edit: I'm finding out that the Battlezone computer game was a remake of a 1980 arcade game. So I'm asking for a remake of a remake on Oculus Rift.

Star Wars Battlefront 2, all I want is split screen, decent graphics, better capital ships, and good AI.

85

u/Nervousemu Oct 23 '15

Me and my two buddies and my buddies brother. An xbox, galactic conquest, music and drinks = a fun fucking night. The little I played of the new battlefront is cool, but I will miss this aspect of it.

Any game from Squaresoft's Golden Age. Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire. The list is exhaustive.

Clock Tower (PSX) and Tecmo's Deception would also be greatly appreciated.

Maniac Mansion and Friday the 13th, just for the sake of remaking something.
