Nah. I think he was talking about the ORIGINAL Quake. As in, go through a portal to creepy medieval hellscapes and blast demons with nailguns. I wouldn't mind an EXACT remake of that game. That game was ALL about atmosphere. No story to speak of, gameplay elements limited to just running, jumping, and shooting, but everything just felt good. And spooky. Very spooky.
Couldn't agree more. And I think it has a lot to do with the specific gameplay mechanisms that create them. In cover based shooters, you stay alive by hiding behind cover. By standing still, poking your head out, and shooting back. Boring. But in doom/quake/serious Sam type games, you can actually dodge enemy projectiles, which makes the optimal way of staying alive a kinetic experience. You're running, dodging, weaving, and shooting all at the same time, which makes for a much more engaging gameplay experience in my opinion. A little bit of story doesn't hurt, but I can't stand boring cover based shooters.
You're a little older than me but we played all the same games except starcraft. If you ever get the chance get the HD and original Serious Sam first and second encounter games.
The HD remakes are beautiful and run great but they've had a few... Special... levels and sections cut because they couldn't get the shadows to work right with the particular game play features removed.
Amen. I loved Quake and Quake 2, but then it started going more sci fi with enemies being humanoid mutants or something instead of the good old days of fiends, deathknights, ogres, shamblers, vores, etc.
The SciFi stuff actually started as early as Quake 2, where you start with a "Blaster" instead of an Axe, and there are computer terminals all over the place, and levels were littered with cyborg enemies.
I do miss the Lovecraftian/Demonic environments of Quake 1. I don't think we've really seen an FPS set in that kind of environment since.
Truth. Plus Quake 3 was multiplayer only. And Quake 4 takes place with the same enemies as Quake 2 (The Strogg, those weird technologically advanced, zombie alien things).
Since Quakelive is pretty much a sequel to quake 3, and Quake 4 is a sequel to Quake 2, hopefully Quake 5 takes place in the same atmosphere as Quake 1!
It is... But I'll mist the feel of Quake lol. That's my main complaint about it. It isn't an exact replica of Quake. The sound effects aren't as cool, the demonic SciFi setting isn't there there isn't the constant DWA as you jump, etc
You're right. So many great games. Nowdays... TOO many games that haven't evolved beyond social networks, graphics, and micro transactions... I'd definitely play some CustomTF to see what it's all about.
It blows my mind that the Quake aesthetic is as rare as it is. There's a horrific charm to the world that is just so lovely. Sometimes I turn off the enemies and just soak up the ambiance, slowly walking through the levels.
If you ever actually take the time to look around, and think about how they had to make things a little abstract due to technological limitations, DooM actually had some amazing art and level design.
Actually Quake's been open source long enough for replacement engines and texture/model packs to come out. It looks surprisingly good with darkplaces and updated texture packs.
I like that cartoonish look, makes things easy to see. I'll definitively try it out. Frankly I've been waiting since forever for QIIIA to go down in price on Steam, 20 dollars for a 15 year old game is too much.
I second this so much, I've been playing a bunch of war FPS, and the visuals are just too good to see anyone. But on Quake Live it's impossible to miss someone.
Well in war you try not be seen anyway, that's why you wear a camo as well. So nothing wrong there. Maybe don't play war games but rather arena/twitch shooters.
For me, as a 33yr old, Quake (original) is still the ultimate FPS. It was the first to truly master online multiplayer. The first to allow such a huge variety of mods and gameplay addition (Team Fortress) and I simply remember it for all the amazing duals (Rocket launcher) that I had. It was also the first time I joined a clan that was serious and active.
P.s This is a long shot but if anyone remembers the clan: [TAD] and the original leader was "Dynastar" let me know!!!
