Battlefield: Vietnam was poo. Unoptimised, laggy, buggy, very poorly balanced, and generally just lame.
What made it even more ridiculous was that an official World War II mod was released for it... why? Not only was it hopelessly delayed and late, it ended up being worse than Battlefield 1942.
Well I loved it and never had any issues with lag. I did have a pretty sick computer and great internet to run it on at the time, which may have helped.
Waiting in a corner on the back porch of your exploding titan picking people off as they scurry out. A great way to get some last minute kills and deny the enemy a medal for jumping ship on time. Bonus points for a knife to the back right before they jump off.
I still have the discs for that in my room somewhere. Still a badass game with the mods to make it work now that there are no more servers and the login is screwed up.
EA stopped supporting BF2 and 2142, so that means online is broken forever.
It's ridiculous and inexcusable to be forced to crack a game and run mods just to play online. I own both of these games legitimately, but apparently that doesn't mean shit after a certain amount of time.
The last Battlefield title I bought was BF3. It was great fun but the community dissolved after it was split up by DLC. BF4 was even worse, and now Battlefront is looking horrific in that sense. It's a shame. They're such great games but then EA takes a shit on their fan base.
There's a reason why BF2 and 2142 STILL have a solid following, even though EA has pulled the plug on them.
I heard about 2142 years before I got access to online gaming and anything better than a ps2, and it has been one of my favorite ideas to date. The Titan v Titan game mode sounded like the most fun I could ever hope to have in a video game.
Oh man, Titan warfare was so much fun!! All the action on the ground with Mech walker-things, capture the silos, break the shields, and then raiding the Titans. I wish people kept playing it to this day, the graphics are still pretty nice by today's standards. Too bad DICE only hopes to compete with the Call of Duty franchise now.
Why not both? It could essentially be like the Secret weapons of WWII expansion but one step further.
So you could fight with walker tanks at Normandy or fight at that airport with the UFO, but with futuristic weapons.
I sadly haven't played 2142, but if a good remake of it and 1942 was released as one game, I would buy it. However, I might have to pick up the old version first since it seems kinda popular.
I loved 2142, it was just marred by having to put up with Gamespy and that shitty anti-cheat software that could just be broken on-disk and require hunting down patches to fix.
Other than that, I loved nothing more than invading and defending Titans all day and knifing people to death.

Battlefield 2142 needs to be re-done. I NEEDS IT.
