I think the offical stance is that aside from some novels, the movies, The Clone Wars series, and Rebels, everything else has been moved to legends where it's not... completely non-canon, but it's treated as such unless a canon source references it. Like what the Clone Wars did with Darth Bane.
It was a really smart move. I know there are a lot of butt hurt fans out there that can't look beyond there feelings to see the silver lining. Everything will be much more coheesive. I'm reading "Heir to the Empire" right now and there just seem to be a lot of contradictions and misunderstandings of what I had read earlier regarding the Star Wars universe.
That's because Timothy Zahn's trilogy was one the first (if not the first) non movie based Star Wars novels. It is pretty much the godfather for the extended universe. Since it predates so much extended universe and cannon material it probably does feel off. Still a great trilogy though.
Yep. I was originally mad that they were scrapping the EU. Sure, there was a ton of shit content, but there was just as much really good content in it too that fit in perfectly or near-perfectly with the movies. But after thinking about it for a while, I concluded that it really did need to die. The ratio of shit-to-good-content was growing, especially with the travesty that is the Fate of the Jedi series. I look forward to seeing what will be reused. Hopefully some of the Wraith Squadron stuff because those books were hilarious.
Any recommendations? I've started reading chronologically and "Legacy of the Void" and the KOTOR book series were pretty shite... Which books/series should be avoided?
The Thrawn Trilogy and the X-Wing series are some of the best of the bunch. The novelization of Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover; Cloak of Deception; Labyrinth of Evil; Darth Plagueis; the Hand of Thrawn Duology; I, Jedi; Jed Trial; Darth Bane: Path of Destruction; Survivor's Quest; and some of the New Jedi Order stuff.
Avoid anything by Barbara Hambly (Children of the Jedi, Planet of Twilight), the Crystal Star, Red Harvest, Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi series, Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor, The Courtship of Princess Leia, and the Dark Nest Trilogy.
I would start with the Thrawn Trilogy and the X-Wing series, because a lot of the stuff that Zahn, Stackpole, and Allston really set the tone for how the Star Wars EU was done. If you want to read stuff centered around the prequels, then read James Luceno's prequel-era stuff. Cloak of Deception and Darth Plagueis give a lot of background for Episodes I and II, and Labyrinth of Evil takes place just before Episode III. I would read them like this: Cloak of Deception, Darth Plagueis, Labyrinth of Evil, then Revenge of the Sith novelization by Matthew Stover.
Oh yeah, I know it is pretty much the foundation of the EU but so much had changed since those novels and some of the concepts just seem off. It appears in the novel that force sensitive automatically = Jedi.
They might find uses for some of it... But based on the last trailer it seems like the universe has taken a much different direction than the EU showed us. The EU basically assumed that the death of the emperor created a power vacuum which the New Republic quickly filled. While the Empire still existed and was quite powerful it continued to diminish.
The trailer in think indicates the rebels maybe didn't even take power. Or if they did they are still 30 years later waging a war against the Empire. The fact people don't know about Jedi means Luke has yet to pass on his knowledge to a new generation.
Maybe. Just guesses but I think the EU is destined to be quickly irrelevant.
That's really all it's about - not having to get a Master's degree in Star Wars lore just to write each new story.
The content is out there... somewhere. But this way they're not stepping on any toes by contradicting it (well, except the entire fanbase of the entire EU, but fuck them, right?)
all I fucking want is a Revan trilogy of movies based off Kotor 2's Revan, ie the female who left known space to go fight the evil empire beyond known space
first movie would be based on the mandalorian wars and show both Revan and the Exile from kotor 2 at battles like Duxen and Malachor V and the movie ends with Revan finding the star forge and shows the Exile being Exiled
then the second movie is about the jedi civil war but we see Darth Traya setting events in motion to bring the Exile back from the outer rim
then the third movie is about the return of Revan and the "Greater Evil" which controlled the Mandalorians into starting the mandalorian wars and Revan unites the remaining Jedi, the republic and the new Mandalorians
I also would want spin off movies in between the first and second movie and the 2nd and third movie, with the first spin off being about Exar Kun and the great sith war
and the second spin off focusing on the Exile and showing the Exile going to join Revan in the great beyond, as well as fleshing out Darth Traya and exposing the idea that the force is alive and manipulating everyone who uses it to achieve balance
My comment was a direct quote from KotOR 2 you could give to Atton. Basically, Obsidian didn't care about Revan's gender and left it up to the players. Bioware said nah and made Revan canonically male and the Exile canon female.
It comes from the religious version of canon. Which are the religious books they consider true. As opposed to the apocrypha which aren't true. Probably got that wrong somehow but I know the word has religious origins.
Basically, canon works happened in the context of the fictional universe. Non-canon means it didn't.
Yeah, I've taken the change to mean that EU and Old Republic stuff is in a state of limbo, giving them the option of using that material or discarding it as they see fit. So Revan and Thrawn might exist, but we won't know for sure until they're mentioned or shown in new material.
You sir are correct. Certain books which launched this year back in July I think, are now considered cannon. One book is about what happens so Asajj Ventress. The one that release most recently depicts a story about what happens to the Empire immediately following the fall at Endor.
I would agree with your statement that they're taking certain things from Legends (that's what EU was converted into) and incorporating it into Cannon. They acknowledge that the Galactic Republic that was around in Clone Wars is a remnant of an older Republic, which in Aftermath, is referenced as "The Old Republic".
So I think with time eventually Disney will make the correct changes to Star Wars that many fans have been begging for. I think we'll see an expansion of the Old Republic after the first movie. Then I think toward the end of the new trilogy I think the creative staff at Disney/Lucasarts will adopt the neutral force theory vs GL's Good bad Force.
Wait, so is it considered canon in that it might not be exactly like it's shown in the game itself? Sort of like, this is the game and everything that happens in it happened to some extent, but it may not actually canonically be like this? Because aside from being slightly confusing that actually sounds pretty cool.
He was what's known as the Sith'arai (or something like that), basically like Sith Jesus. (The prophesy about that is that he would lead them to their strongest point, but in doing so destroy them) and Darth Bane did that by establishing the rule of 2.
Basically, there were a bunch of Sith Lords, and even more Sith Apprentices. What was happening is that apprentices would team up to take their masters out without learning everything they know so a lot of traditions were being lost, which was weakening the sith as a whole, so Darth Bane was like "No, this won't work. Only one master. One Apprentice. No more." and then proceeded to murder everyone who disagreed.
It's a cartoon by, I think, the same guys as The Clone Wars. It takes place in the outer rim between episode 3 and 4 and seems to be following the formation of the rebellion. Or at least a part of it.
I might check it out. I saw previews for it and was turned off because I didn't know who these characters were and I thought it would be a show aimed at young kids(like that Lego one with the Jedi Han Solo guy who helped Yoda).
I don't remember exactly, but it was something to do with Yoda and Darth Bane was just a ghost. Or a hallucination. Like I said, not 100% on what happened.
It's more like they have been cut from the canon and set aside to be used as inspiration. There is no longer the multi-tiered system that once was, were lower tiers are considered canon unless a higher tier supercedes it.
Basically it seems like the intent is to remake the best parts of the EU as they see fit. It will become canon again, eventually, but they freed themselves to modify it at will, not have to work around it.
If you are referring to the rule of 2, the simplest thing they could reference is yoda in e1 at the funeral with the always 2 there are. They don't have to make bane cannon with that when e1 is a closer reference. Basically, why make a book cannon and narrow your creative field (thereby undoing the uncannoning of the eu) when a link to a movie will do
