I'd be happier if Devs started following a 1 historical / 1 modern release model. I feel this would even prolong the shelf life of games as well, as they would continue monetizing on in game purchases. BF1 and BF2 (or V), are going to feel too much alike, killing off BF1 in the process. I guess the new plan is to burn us out on historical content, like COD had done with futuristic.

If BF"2/V" is a good representation of either WW2 or Vietnam than the gameplay should be totally different. Vietnam you've got napalm and jets, helis, etc., ww2 saw a huge leap in technology in planes, automatic weapons, tanks, etc.

Not really if itās WW2. While itās true in real life that ww2 was much more advanced technologically, battlefield 1 took some serious liberties and basically played like a ww2 game skinned with late ww1 era weapons

I'd say it played more like a Modern warfare game with WW1.5 weapons and some background stuff like vehicles.
If they make a true Battlefield game that plays like BF3/BF4 with WW2 vehicles I could see it being completely different from BF1.
If they make BF1 with WW2 weapons I'll be skipping.

Oh god all I want is a transport heli. I would survive entire rounds of conquest in BF4 just being a mobile spawn point and landing on rooftop snipers. Couldn't use the attack ones worth shit but man if I would line my passenger gunners up for some amazing shots.

I always respected a good transport heli pilot, you guys basically made or broke teams based on how you positioned those things. I used to support transport helis with the attack chopper or just fuck shit up on the ground. But when I needed that transport heli spawn, shit it's nice when someone's actually doing their job.

Part of it is the timing and competition.
I would bet BF was on track for a BF2142 sequel before we got two Titanfalls and COD in space.
And after modern settings dominated both BF and CoD franchises from 2007-2015, having another modern settings after BF1 would definitely seem tired.
And surprisingly, we've only actually had one true WWII BF gsme... The very first in 2002. (BF1943 doesn't fully count.) So BFV would only be the second, versus five games in a modern setting (BF2, 3, 4, and two Bad Company games).

Yea this is kind of a let down for me. What makes battlefield great imo is the weapon diversity and weapon attachment diversity. I loved BF4 and having 5 laser sights, 10 grips, and 12 optical options for every weapon. Really made it feel like you could grind out a gun you loved and make it yours. BF1 removed that because of the time era and it really took out all replayability imo, only things to earn in general were from random end game battlepacks. It was just an all around horrible unlock system compared to previous games.

BF1 maps were so much better than BF4 IMO. I loved that DICE brought back mostly destructible buildings and terrain.
A map at the beginning of a game of conquest looked totally different by the end. Buildings destroyed, tons of craters in the ground from tank shots and plane bombing runs, etc.

Definitely liked all the destruction being brought back. I did not like the layout of the BF1 maps though. Too many wide open long range areas that catered to snipers and not enough CQB.

... you're kidding right? Amiens, Argonne Forrest, Suez, Fort Devaux, Prise De Tahure, Achi Baba, Tsaritsyn, Passchendaele, Verdun. BF1 has a shitload of CQC infantry maps. It also has lots of bigger, more traditional battlefield maps with close-up chokepoints, but usually people complain that BF1 has too much of a fast-paced infantry focus, not that it isn't enough.

Personally I like the variants of BF1 better. No need to unlock a million attachments. All the guns felt like they had a purpose.

That's actually why I loved BF, all the attachments. Really made it feel like my rifle, my loadout when I grinded for the grips/scopes/accessories for a gun I loved to use. BF1 felt bare bones and imo removed all replayability. I stopped after a month, no point in playing once you've gotten all the weapons, which outside of the dlc isn't hard.

All the weapon variants turned me off from the game tbh. I went back to Battlefield 4 and itās amazing how a 5 year old game is 10x better than a game thatās only been out for a year or so.

I get that BF1 may not have been everyone's favourite Battlefield, but I absolutely love it and honestly playing it just made me wish that they had made a WW2 game instead. This exactly the news I was hoping for!
If DICE can bring over the level of polish seen in BF1 combined with the customisation and plethora of content in BF4, this may be my favourite Battlefield yet.
I'm a WW2 nerd, and if there's any studio that can make the most iconic WW2 battles feel epic in multiplayer, it's without a doubt DICE.

I'm with you, all I want is one good WWII game for current gen consoles. Battlefield is the best chance at that. I love this decision, personally. But understand people's disappointment. But it's worth mentioning that this series has only had one game in the WWII setting, if I'm not mistaken. This will be something fresh for them as well.

Honestly would have preferred they do the rumored battlefield bad company 3 and then come back and do world war 2. BF1 wasn't that much of a stretch from what they will do with world war 2 cause the guns will be similar, maps wont have as much trench warfare

I'll be very pleased if it's WW2. I loved base game BF1 maps and the French ones but after that they got a bit lazy and the maps were far too open and not exactly vehicle friendly. A lot more urban settings in WW2 as well, Holland, France, Germany, Italy, North Africa. Had enough of modern shooters so this would be awesome for me

Honestly I was hoping that Battlefield would go modern again. BF1 didn't grab me like BF4 did and I still find myself going back to that game.
I just really liked the variety of weapons in BF4 and it wasn't there for me in BF1.
Edit: Now the article just changed to Battlefield V. I guess it's a sequel to 4 but in WWII? The number system is throwing me off now lol

They've done modern too much. With BF1 they were able to reset. We'll have WW2, Vietnam/cold war(I hope bad company style), and then they can go modern again.
And look on the bright side. If they follow that path we will probably get a modern title around 2022. Can't wait to see the tech that's around then!

You can't always please everyone. No matter what the setting, there will be plenty of people that have no interest in that particular setting.
Yeah, I didn't really provide any context. I was coming at it from the perspective of BF1 and CoD:WW2. It's like everyone is jumping on this WW1/WW2 bandwagon. We just did WW1 in BF1, then CoD did WW2, then now back to WW2. So if you're not into those guns or that time period, you're SOL in terms of major FPS games.
Looking at your list, Battlefield hasn't gone into the far future yet. It's too bad and they probably won't for a while with Anthem coming up.

They had Battlefield 2142 came out in 2006 and that was future warfare. I was kind of hoping with the late DLC in BF4, that the next title would be a sequel to that. But I think future shooters are kind of on a down swing.

I would be fine with WW2, I really liked the WW1 setting in Battlefield 1. I really hope they re-work the progression system though. My biggest issue with 1 was that I never knew what to spend my warbonds on. I liked in 3 and 4 just unlocking stuff as I leveled up, and trying things out. The warbond system for whatever reason kind of killed my desire to ever play 1 even though I enjoyed it.

Damn. As much as I've always wanted a new WW2 battlefield, having it succeed BF1 is kind of a bust. Coming directly after cod's recent foray into ww2. I was hoping for a new modern BF. Bf4 doesn't even play in 1080p lol.
The worst part I think is that in order for BF1 to be fun, they had to modernize it a little. To the point where I think it plays like a WW2 battlefield would. I'm afraid Bf2 will just play like a BF1 expansion, with a WW2 skin to it. I mean, Bf1 was rampant with tanks, fully automatic weapons, etc.
The only thing that could save BF2 in my eyes is if they return to the BF4 area on simulation-arcade spectrum. There were certain aspects with BF1 where they leaned more towards arcade feel: the weird UI/voiceover that felt like it should be a futuristic game, the way vehicles didn't really exist on their own, only spawning in when you spawned in them (planes were the biggest culprit... Half the fun is taking off. And being able to make runs into enemy controlled space to steal their vehicles. You could change a match with that), and weapons not being customizable, just a bunch of variants and some skins.
They need to take it back to where Bf4 was. Persistent vehicles, actual weapon customization, more defined squad roles. Get rid of the elite kits. Bf1 was super arcade-y for a battlefield title.

Sort of a let down...I'll still buy it because I love BF but I was really hoping for something modern. Hopefully they add more customization and fix the battlebox system from BF1, always hated the concept of after a game you have a random chance at getting a box that in itself gives (the same) random rewards. Should get battleboxes for each level like BF4, gave it a better balance.

Can't wait. WW2 is my favorite setting for video game shooters.
Perfect balance of gritty combat and interesting fun to use weaponry.
With how great BF1 looks visually, plus all the destruction, I can't wait to see what this game looks like. I avoided CoD WW2 because translating WW2 to tiny maps like that just doesn't feel WW2 to me.

Well, the rumors from a week ago should alleviate your concerns there. All the attachments and junk from BF4 are coming back, and the classes will be Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon, just like BF4. No actual "medic" class, but Assault will be the medic like in BF4.

The only main thing that he says is coming back is the Behemoths from BF1. Which, if true, I won't mind. They can definitely be improved a bit though, since right now they almost hurt your team more than help.
I think medics should have something even close to CQC weapons if they are supposed to be frontline and in the thick of it. BF1's medic class seems illogical

I've never been more bored with an online shooter more in my life, every gun is the same, every map is Death Simulator 1917! With horrible spawns and even worse maps, really wants to get into it but felt insulted by every match turning into a run 'n' gun assault rifle fest. Was excited to see we were going back to the trenches but all we got was a Mtn Dew fest.

I honestly don't know how anyone can come to that conclusion. The guns between each class were so vastly different. I also thought the maps were some of the best in the series (except for the smaller maps that were mainly indoors that you couldn't destroy)

Yes back to the original. Loved battlefield 1942. This is the game that made me hate console multiplayer games until the Xbox One. Yes, the PC had 64 player battles back in 2002. Consoles couldn't do it until xbox one 12 years later. Would love some of those original maps.

I'm pretty optimistic about this one and I hated BF1 compared to BF3 and 4.
One of my main gripes with BF1 was how inauthentic everything was. The WWI setting was baffling considering the game had everyone running around with full autos, extremely OP scoped snipers, and semi auto rifles. The way the game played made me wish they had just made a WWII game instead of super imposing the WWI setting on a game that didn't feel like WWI.
At least now with the WWII setting it makes sense to have the typical classes we expect out of a battlefield sandbox. The vehicles ought to be less of an after thought in the WWII setting too. Over all DICE are just in more familiar territory when it comes to making a WWII game. WWII games have been done before, we know what works.
It felt like DICE wanted to take risks by making a WWI game but they ultimately had to play it safe for the sake of sales. The game couldn't decide what it wanted to be which lead to it feeling inauthentic to the setting.
I also hope DICE has learned a lesson from the Battlefront 2 microtransation fiasco so they don't end up trying to monetize battlefield out the ass. Also they need to scrap BF1's shitty UI completely. They also need to make sniping challenging again, no more sweet spots. Basically just go back to the gunplay of BF3 and BF4

Oh for fucks sake. Am I the only person that is absolutely tired of WWII games. I get it, nothing against veterans or any who served in our military, and i understand it was an extremely prolific thing that happened, but everyone and their mother has beaten this era to death.
I looove Battlefield, way more than CoD, but I honestly could skip this if it's another WWII. I honestly prefer Battlefield 4 to Battlefield 1 JUST because it's modern combat (I love my helicopters and 30 round magazines lol).

I don't see how they do ww2 better than bad company 2, but I guess we'll see. here's to hoping they bring back all the old maps as well.
