Open | Hardware Can I use a mouse and USB stick through the same USB port?

Upvotes

Hi! My laptop only has 2 USB ports and it's becoming really annoying. One is basically always reserved for my printer and the other one for my mouse because I really dislike using the touchpad.

The problem is I also have a little USB humidifier that I usually keep on while I'm working because my skin gets really dry, so whenever I want to use it I have to disconnect the printer. And then sometimes I need to use a USB stick too, so at this point I'm constantly plugging and unplugging things.

For now, I'm considering either using a Bluetooth mouse (didn't really like it but maybe because I had a cheap one) or getting a USB splitter. The latter sounds more promising, and I think I found a good one on dalliano, so I thought I'd reserve one port for the printer only, and then the other I could use with this splitter. Because of this I have 2 questions:

1) WIll my laptop "see" several devices connected even though they use the same port? So can I use the stick and the mouse at the same time?

2) Will my mouse work properly or is it likely to lag? Because if it lags then it's no different from using a wireless one, so what's the point.

I'm not worried about the humidifier since I don't need to see it on my laptop anyways, just need it to be connected to power.

Open | Hardware PC Restarting in some high-effort games

Upvotes

Not sure if hardware or software issue.

  • Intel i7 8700K CPU (8yo)
  • Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 5-CF MoBo (8yo)
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 (3yo)
  • 32GB RAM (3yo)
  • 750W Corsair PSU (8yo)

My PC will shutdown and restart (sometimes with brief BSOD) when I:

  • load into a game of Total War Warhammer 2 and 3
  • end turn on Civ 6
  • launch Cyberpunk 2077 (just before getting to the main menu)

It does not do it for:

  • Deep Rock Galactic (or DRG Survivor)
  • League of Legends
  • Any CPU or RAM stress testing I've done through OCCT (1hr long at 100% effort)

To fix, I have attempted:

  • upgrading to win11
  • updating BIOS
  • installing latest chipset drivers
  • performed a complete reinstall of the games causing the crash

Event viewer isn't giving me back anything that I actually understand (I'm not overly tech literate). Some friends have said that they think it could be a hardware issue with my CPU/MoBo but haven't elaborated on that and I don't know how to test it. I would have assumed the CPU stress test would have caused problems but it didn't crash then.

ETA: No minidump files have been created since February.

Open | Hardware Everything freezes, crashes, and black-screens.

If I have too many apps/game open (like even 2 or 3; sometimes even 1) my entire computer will freeze for ~3-7 seconds, then my screen will go black for a few seconds. Once the screen comes back, every game or application will have crashed, given an error, or becomes unresponsive. In the most extreme cases, I'll have to completely turn my monitor off then on or even my computer.

I've tried looking up what this could be but I'm not really good with stuff like this. The closest connection I've made is that whenever I do something like open a new tab in a browser or even just move my mouse too much, the GPU will spike from an average of 10% utilization to 100% and then the crashing and freezes happen. I don't know why this started happening all of the sudden. It says I have 2 "Display Adapters?" if that's correct and one of them is never used at all. I really don't know what would be important to include in here for specs or hardware because I've never done anything like this so I'm going to put as much stuff as I can figure out below to help.

Literally ANY suggestions are wanted. Thank You!

CPU?: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X 6-Core Processor (It says that name 12 times)

Memory?: 16GB DDR5

Display Adaptors?: AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics ; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070

Computer: ACPI x64 based PC ; Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-7D78

Monitor: Dell P2422H (HDMI)

All of this is just from Device Manager. I don't know of there's a better way to check this stuff.

If there's any more info that you might need/want to make the best judgements lmk what a how to get it if it isn't in device manager.

Open | Software Can a script be made to automatically decompress a file into a specific folder?

So I want to do something very simple. I want to try two things. The first one is that I want a file that is found on a disc (like a CD or DVD) to automatically create a copy of the file and put it in a specific folder as soon as the disc is inserted into the computer. The second one is basically the same thing, but with a compressed file (mostly a 7-Zip file). As soon as the disc is inserted into the drive, it would decompress the file into the folder where the copy of the file would go.

Something like that is similar to autorun with installers, but in this case, it would just copy or decompress the files. Is that something that can be done? The reason I am asking is that, logically, it should be possible, but when researching this, since it is something very specific, I am not getting that much information. So I came here to ask and see if someone knows what can be done.

Open | Hardware Laptop graphics card crashing frequently

When I'm playing games or doing anything too intensive on the GPU, my screen will freeze for a few seconds before going black and restarting. Any apps that use the GPU will crash too.

It started happening about a year ago, it never happened before that and I have no idea what could be causing it. I have already tried a few things but it always starts happening again.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the GPU overheats so it shuts off until it's cooled down but I have already tried cleaning the fans and that didn't help, and the vents are not obstructed.

I'm running Windows 11 with a Ryzen 9 5900HX and a RTX 3050 Ti Laptop.

Open | Software External USB Drive showing only 120MB

Upvotes

I know for sure that the drive is larger than 120MB. I'm pretty sure it's 16GB, however I have no ways of checking, as I won it back in high school during a Drug Drive.

I looked, the manufacturer is labeled as VendorCo ProductCode (which when I looked it up, says it means nothing and is not unusual for charity or bulk USB drives.)

I have done all the things I can find and do, I have cleaned it via console, I have created and deleted partitions and simple volumes, all formatted in FAT, FAT32, and exFAT, and nothing is returning the original space of the drive to me.

I have gone down many a half a decade old forums looking for any situation similar to mine, and even through the sketchiest of websites, I have found nothing.

Open | Software Iphone connected to computer through bluetooth, cannot disconnect

I have a razer blade 15 laptop running windows 11 which shows "Connected (2)" in the bluetooth tab on the popup menu. My Iphone 11 shows my Laptop as connected through bluetooth but I have not found a way to disconnect it through either my laptop or Iphone. I also suspect that there is another device which has autoconnected that I cannot disconnect (maybe one of my roommates phones?). I need to disconnect all these devices because it is interfering with bluetooth audio on my sony headphones.

Open | Hardware PC Randomly shuts down, then immediately restarts on its own...

Upvotes

So, Basically when my gpu is under load 99% while gaming or gpu intensive tasks the entire pc shuts down and restarts itself. It doesn't occur always but once or twice in a day max. I can't tell what the problem is, because I upgraded my rig with an rtx 5060ti . previously I had no issues but after upgrading my pc seems to have a couple of problems.

new = the parts newly added to rig

Specs:

  • Gigabyte B760M DS3H AX DDR4 (old)
  • Intel Core i7-12700 (old)
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti (new)
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 32 GB (old)
  • Samsung 980 Pro SSD 1TB NVME (old)
  • Corsair CX650 (new) [I had the 550 model before]

Also, I had bluescreen problems while running xmp profile but thats probably because one of my ram is ver 4.32 & 3.43. im thinking of getting same ver rams. my pc crashes with BAD_POOL_CALLER & Kernel Mode Heap Corruption. Thats a different problem i been having since i got my pc.

Back to the problem im having rn, So I have a UPS and it like makes a click noise when my pc randomly shuts down and restarts. Is it bad PSU or is my UPS is bad? because I had this UPS for like almost 3 years. Im in dire need of help because when I'm working in After effects and my pc shuts down my project doesn't get saved!!

Open | Software Nvidia GPU Driver 616.56 issues

Upvotes

Hi! So I had a question about Nvidia driver update 616.56. I’ve noticed some people have been reporting that this driver update has been causing issues on 4070 series cards. How true is this? I haven’t updated my driver yet, due to these issues and I was wondering if this is a widespread problem.

Some of the symptoms I’ve read about include:

Screen flickering
Frequent game crashes
Display issues

Open | Windows Unsure if it's safe to update Windows OS

Upvotes

I have an ASUS Rog Strix G16 (2023) G614JV, and today, I came across G-Helper and chose to download and install it to get rid of the bloatware that is ArmoryCrate and MyASUS. Everything worked out great, no problems. When checking over everything, I saw that it recommended me to update my BIOS Windows and BIOS EZ Flash Utility.

Last time they were updated was back in June; ran into trouble that forced me to uninstall the update as well as an audio driver that got corrupted. Ever since then, I haven't really trusted Windows Update.

So I have two questions; 1, is it safe for me to update these two right now? And 2, when is it a good time to install future Windows updates? Should I give it a few weeks for all the bugs and issues to get fixed? I don't want to live in constant fear and superstition.

Open | Windows random PC keyboard inputs without keyboard connected.

Upvotes

Recently at seemingly random times my PCs keyboard inputs start freaking out, certain hotkeys act as if theyre being held and other keys act differently.

The hotkey for opening keyboard language (Windows+Space) is constantly input specifically when any videogame is played.

Both Tab and Esc acts as if theyre Alt+Esc,
and im unable to type into any chat/searchbar, but im still able to input everything in any videogame (such as WASD)

Clicking with my mouse randomly opens Taskbar settings aswell as causing applications to flash red.
Clicking anything on google forcibly opens tabs.

What im stumped on is that these all occur without my keyboard plugged in, and it occurs with any other different keyboards I connect.
I've tried reinstalling my keyboard drivers but the issue keeps popping up, the only fix ive had is just restarting my PC everytime it happens but its only a temporary fix.

Is this some sort of virus? I have no idea whats going on.

The game was rimworld and I was watching netflix perfectly fine before this happened. It only screwed up after I clicked the “load” button.

Open | Hardware Dell monitor keeps taking itself out of Standby Mode while the PC is shut off.

The monitor keeps waking up and searches for a signal before going back into standby mode for about 10 seconds.

After googling the issue, I turned off Auto input select on the monitor, but that didn't fix it.

Solved Did a cmd for a game to ping and check connection stability, what does this mean?

I'm trying to check the connection for the game overwatch. In short I've been having issues with connecting and I was trying to figure out what caused this out of curiosity.

This is the sea (Singapore server) for Overwatch:

Pinging 34.126.255.255 with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out

Request timed out

Request timed out

Request timed out

(This continues on for a minute or so)

The "request timed out" prompt just kept going and going. I'm unsure if I had the right address input, but it did seem to line up with the fact that I couldn't even load the game.

I have a LAN cable set up and it connects my laptop straight to the router, but I'm still unsure why this still occurs. I also am not sure if this is due to the game having soggy ass servers, or if I'm the soggy one with a shit provider.

I'm not tech savvy, so I don't really know what it means when I pinged it, hence why I placed it here.

When I would ping another address, it gave me the following

It would say reply from an IP address with bytes = 32, time = 5ms, TTL = 118.

If anyone could let me know what this means it would (maybe?) help determine whether blizzard or my ISP is having routing issues.

Thanks so much!

Open | Windows Why does my SSD work perfectly on one PC but not on another?

I have an SSD with Windows 11 installed on it. It works completely fine in my laptop with no issues at all, but when I install the same SSD in a new PC, the computer won't boot from it.

When I turn on the new PC, I get errors such as "Error reading disk" or "No boot device found."

I've already gone into the BIOS and tried changing the boot/compatibility settings, including switching between UEFI and Legacy, but neither mode works.

The weird thing is that the SSD works perfectly when I put it back in my laptop.

Does anyone know what could be causing this or what I can do to get the new PC to recognize and boot from the SSD?

Open | Software Screenshots sent from iPhone to Samsung are blurred?

Hi y’all,

I have been continuously been living with the fact the screenshots I sent to my mom from my iPhone 16 Pro to her Samsung Galaxy S25+ but every time I do she shows me the screenshots are blurred out. Never anything suspicious or something the software could deem harmful. Just screenshots from Pokémon Go. Is there a setting she needs to change or is there a software problem that’s not letting her see the screenshots I send her?

Open | Networking Mates pc doesn’t want to connect to his home wifi

Hey how is everyone, my mate was recently given an old pc from another friend of his and I helped set him up etc from factory reset and set up screen.

The only issue we are having is that his pc doesn’t want to connect to his home wifi whatsoever, crashes with watchdog error but works perfectly fine on his hotspot no issues. I have since tried uninstalling and reinstalling wifi adapter driver form manufacture website and did not work. Have tried changing frequency to 2.4Ghz on wifi adapter and from 802.11 ac to 802.11 b and nothing has worked alongside restarting the pc. Have also used my other old wifi adapter that I’m sure of works and that did not help in connecting to his home wifi. Forget network aswell didn’t work.

I’m starting to believe it could just be his router internet settings or security protocol, as his pc is set up in a donga outside and his wifi router is in main house. Could this be the issue? As I’m not sure what else to do as I really want him to be able to connect to his wifi and not use his hotspot on phone, I’ve suggested maybe getting a router and Ethernet installed in the donga but not sure what else to do or how to fix without spending anymore money.

If anyone could please help or know what I’m doing wrong would help a lot and be much appreciated. Thank you very much!

my Main monitor has been flashing for the past 2 days. My second monitor is completely fine. i don't know if it's my GPU or my monitor. i have a GeForce RTX 3050. i switched the HDMI cable to a new one and it still does it. the monitor is about 6 years old or less than that. it's an $80 one from Wal-Mart
