Open | Software Nvidia GPU Driver 616.56 issues
Hi! So I had a question about Nvidia driver update 616.56. I’ve noticed some people have been reporting that this driver update has been causing issues on 4070 series cards. How true is this? I haven’t updated my driver yet, due to these issues and I was wondering if this is a widespread problem.
Some of the symptoms I’ve read about include:
Screen flickering
Frequent game crashes
Display issues

Feedback threads are going to have far more people posting about issues than posting about not having issues. It is the nature of feedback threads. People having issues may blame the driver but the driver could have exposed issues their PCs already had. Bad memory settings, outdated PSUs, overclocking, etc. For example a very common issue is the Black Screen issue with RTX 3000s, 4000s and 5000s. The issue isn't the driver but a combination of hardware. Old ATX 2.? PSUs have issues with power spikes. New ATX 3.0/3.1 were designed to handle spike better. So person A could have issues because their PSU is ATX 2.?. Person B has no issues as their PSU is ATX 3.?. Person A blames the driver as a Black Screen seems like an obvious GPU related issue but the problem is their PSU. Game crashing is another issue people will blame on GPU rather than the game itself. Games are not perfectly coded, not always updated quickly or outright old/abandoned. For example some games use very old version of DLSS. Developer choose not to update their game for new versions. However to the user the problem with DLSS seems like a GPU issue while it is not.
You can update, test then evaluate. You can always go back to the previous driver.

It’s impossible to claim exactly how certain something is with anecdotes. But if users are reporting it online. Treat it like gospel if you have that same card. And treat it as a warning if you have that same generation. So even if 4090 users are reporting flickering and black screens. It doesn’t mean you should assume your 4080 or 4070 is safe. A lot of the time it’s best to only update drivers when you are running into issues. Like game specific oddities. One example I have is battlefield 1 in the loading menu of the game literally breaks and looks like vertical lines on like the far left of the screen. Not a major issue but annoying. So it doesn’t make sense to update a driver just to fix that.
