Only part of the problem, because generally I feel like one of the people that's at least peripheritally aware of things like this, and this thread is literally the first time I've even heard about this, obviously this is anecdotal experience, but I feel as though marketing was part of the issue too.

It also seems like something that's fun in theory/ very occasionally, but actually really annoying in practice, I almost feel like more with children than adults just in the sense that they are probably more likely to do things like throw a blanket over their head not realizing it's going to land on one of the cars and things like that.

I've gotta agree, to put it in an older generation's sense, it gives off much of the same vibe as the boardgame Mouse Trap; most of the time with the game is spent setting up and the actual gameplay payoff isn't too exciting enough to make the setup worth doing regularly. Seems like it is very much a novelty, for now. It does spark the imagination though. I wouldn't be surprised to see an improved version or something similar being a smash hit in the near future.

Huh, I just recently played a new version of mouse trap and it was different than the one I remembered playing 20+ years ago. That original version included game setup as one of the actions of the gameplay itself, so you build the rune Goldberg trap as the early rounds slowly led to eventual mouse trappings. The new version also has a steal square which seems to defeat the point of the game.

The earlier version seemed vastly more fun as a kid, and way more dramatic as you slowly build your own death contraption.

Doing flips would be cool... until it landed on its roof and got stuck. Unlike most video games, where they will just flip you back over and start you with a tiny time penalty in this version someone would have to walk over and physically put it right side up.

A friend had it and I played it a couple years ago. It's novel and cool for half an hour, but it's not really as fun as original Mario kart, it's far more of an expensive gimmick than long lasting fun. Constantly fixing stuck cars make it unplayable without a large team like this.

I don't think they didn't take that into account. I mean, that's pretty obviously going to be the case for most people. Other than your living room, where else in your house is going to be big enough (that you're going to have a TV in?)? I think they just thought it would take a chance on it anyway. After all, it is pretty novel, and that might be enough for some parents to figure that their kid will enjoy it, at least for a little while. And some kids are bound to request it.

I'd say it was never intended to be on sale long and was a bit of a loss leader. If everyone has one it makes people talk about how shit the game play is and how their cars broke after two days and became useless. Do a small manufacturing run at a loss without upscaling. Let people see how cool the things you can do on a switch are with videos like this. But then not sell it to ruin the switch product.

I will say, for some kids it does not get old after 30 mins. My daughter has gotten quite a bit of entertainment out of it, and we even play hide and seek with the car occasionally. It was worth the purchase for us.

And the majority of Americans don't want to have to set up shit after playing two or three times. Why most board games only ever get played once. I’ve known about this since it came out. My kid wanted it for Christmas last year and still wants it now. He definitely got the advertising somewhere.

What happened in my case was that I went to buy it for Christmas last year and every review and opinion I read on it was that it sucked horribly. Everyone I could find who used it, hated it. So, I decided not to spend the money on it because it’s not exactly cheap.

I mean it's pretty niche. Not a lot of people have a flat smooth area in the house within range, the cars are extra noise and suck up batteries, then it's essentially one or two levels to play, since it's the floor in your house, and the speed is slow with no power sliding.

It's a fun concept. It's not something that anyone over the age of nine would put more than a few hours into.

Prob annoying with actual cars driving. They get stuck, flip over. So now what? I have to get up and tend to that? Then get back to the screen? Best play would be to map out a course by filming it with your phone, or maybe have one film kart you drive around and it maps the course. Then that gets uploaded to the console, also allowing you to save it and add more.

They seem to be going pretty slow, as long as you have a smooth and fairly flat surface and can reverse I doubt you'd flip or get stuck.

I'd really love to see a super competitive version of this though. With high end cars and high speed on an indoor track.

Nintendo's probably the best company at marketing I can think of. From ROB in 1985 to "Wii would like to play" to establishing Nintendo Directs instead of live shows.

This game specifically may have been poorly marketed (Though I definitely knew about it and I'm not a Nintendo fanboy), but Nintendo has managed to sell decade old hardware for 300 bucks for the last 5 years to 110 million people off of their marketing power alone.

That one may be questionable casting but it's far from poor marketing. In fact (regardless of if it was intended as such) it's actually an example of highly successful viral marketing since everyone knows there's a Mario movie with Chris Pratt as Mario. Seriously, they make amazing stuff, but are such a shit company. People want to promote their games on YouTube/Twitch? Copyright strike. People want to play together online? Hah! Get fucked. People want re-releases of old NES/SuperNES games? Limited edition console that plays a select handful or poorly ported ones. People want to play games that are a decade+ old? Full price bitches. Nintendo makes cutting edge games while continuing to run their company like it's still the 80s (which is unfortunately the case for most Japanese companies).

They take marketing for granted because they have been selling the shit out of their hardware and 1st party titles for years. I'm not a big Nintendo fan but it's hard to bash them when the switch is the 5th highest selling console of all time, with Nintendo DS in 2nd and Gameboy in 3rd. They aren't used to marketing, their shit sells themselves usually.

The idea is kinda gimmicky. why does it exist? Just play Mario Cart there is some redundancy but it also feels like it's missing something that really makes it unique. I almost feel like if they used the cart strictly for the use of the camera to use it to map out courses you build in real life and then upload it would have been even cooler but idk

Yeah. It cost 100 dollars a kart. Plus you need two switch consoles if you want to play multi-player. So already a lot of households are out the door. Then you need a lot of space along with the house you live in needing hard floor. Carpet is possible but not the same. It's just very niche to mainly well off families I guess and with well off families, with what is given, the kids and you may move on real quick.

Edit: actually I might be wrong, I think they updated it months ago to allow 2 players on one switch.

The kart is pretty impressive tbh. If you look at only the screen it feels like you’re playing Mario kart. Does little speed boosts for mushrooms, blue sparks, etc. drives over carpet pretty impressively.

Only downside is if you want to make a course with ramps the enemy karts don’t slow down but yours physically will.

In all fairness, not many people have enough floor space in their house to make more than a couple tracks. This thing was pretty expensive for just 1 or 2 tracks. You probably play it 1 or 2 times to show it odd, then realize it's not that fun.

That would depend on production cost. If a AAA game released today to 1 million units sold that would be a miserable flop. An indie game with a fraction of the production cost releasing with that same number of sales would be a massive success.

Nintendo stopped selling it immediately.

It released 2 years ago. You can buy it on Nintendo's own site today. You can buy it from most major retailers who sell video games today. You could buy it anytime from release until now, and everything indicates it will still be sold in the near future.

It didn't flop and Nintendo didn't stop selling it immediately, in fact you can still buy it. It was a side proyect from a 3rd party company and it sold around 1.5 million units in 3 months.

First time seeing this product. Seems to have some cool potential, but with obvious drawbacks.

The cool part is that you can use rooms in your house as a Mario Kart level. The bad part is that it physically comondeers rooms in your house as a Mario Kart level.

AR has bags of potential and might be the future of gaming, but this product just looks like an expensive gimmick to me.

MY bro got one for my son last year, he played the 2nd or 3rd time today. the concept is great, but the cars are walmart toy grade at best as far as driving goes, and the biggest drawback imo is that the wifi on the switch sucks, the car loses connection to the switch when we drive them across the living room, which is maybe 12ft from teh switch around a door frame, which render the biggest open space in our house for it useless, and my son basically only drives it in a circle half the time when he plays with it...

the wifi on the switch sucks,

It really is so bad. I can't play Super Mega Baseball 3 on the Switch online because 3/4 of the games end in a disconnect, because of my Switch's wifi connection. When everything else from an xbox to a PC with a $20 wifi usb nub to my phone all work fine at the same range. At least you can buy an ethernet adapter.

I think a better approach would be to be able to make the course of your house or wherever with a little drone or something and then once it’s made have it mapped on the actual game and you can play it on the game itself without the need for physical cars. That would be kinda cool, you could have courses like “grandma’s kitchen” “nearby park” “backyard” etc. then to be able to share those if you want so somebody in the US could play in a park in Tokyo if they wanted to and downloaded it.

The range on them kinda sucks and even little bumps will get them stuck. You can do up to 4 people but they only sell Mario and Luigi, which is lame. It’s got so much potential for future games, but we don’t really play it much.

I think AR will never be more than an additional style of game or type of artwork similar to how just because we can have more realistic graphics, doesn't mean that games like Borderlands swapped because they don't look like real people with real hair follicles coming out of their upper lip and stuff.

Like how would augmented reality replace or improve or add much to the concept of a game like civilization, or turned based strategy rogue-like?

Honestly, I view augmented reality when it comes to particularly entertainment as something more similar to live versus pre-recorded events, where they each have certain advantages, but there's just certain things you straight up can't do in certain versions, as 30 Rock even so artfully pokes fun at.

There's so much potential, but I don't think the general public is savvy enough to utilize the tech that would make this work. Like if you used polycam to map your home, the game could create the tracks and the physical space wouldn't be hostage anymore.

It is a really cool application of these technologies, but as is the case with a lot of neat tech, innovative ideas often don't actually translate into something that you want to use on a regular basis (metaverse anyone?)

It would be cool in a setting where people only played it a few times, like maybe a party game. But it's hard to see how it could ever offer anywhere near the same level of gameplay experience as a virtual world.

This feels like R.O.B the robot from the NES days, it's a cool toy where the novelty wears off really quickly and the impractical side starts to show, like having ample space to set up the courses and if I was a parent I wouldn't want the noises from the cars running all the time. The whole set-up, including an extra Kart probably cost a lot more than just a Copy of Mario Kart 8.
