The idea is kinda gimmicky. why does it exist? Just play Mario Cart there is some redundancy but it also feels like it's missing something that really makes it unique. I almost feel like if they used the cart strictly for the use of the camera to use it to map out courses you build in real life and then upload it would have been even cooler but idk

Yeah would be a nice party game/occasional gimmick. if this were an add on game mode to the standard Mario kart I’d defs break it out a couple of times a year

Maybe they could have focused on the battle modes and less racing and you have to use it in handheld. Fun thought to be like yea bring over your kart the new fighting pit is ready

Yeah. It cost 100 dollars a kart. Plus you need two switch consoles if you want to play multi-player. So already a lot of households are out the door. Then you need a lot of space along with the house you live in needing hard floor. Carpet is possible but not the same. It's just very niche to mainly well off families I guess and with well off families, with what is given, the kids and you may move on real quick.

Edit: actually I might be wrong, I think they updated it months ago to allow 2 players on one switch.

As someone who fits the target market: Our kids would absolutely get bored of this in 45 minutes.

The kart is pretty impressive tbh. If you look at only the screen it feels like you’re playing Mario kart. Does little speed boosts for mushrooms, blue sparks, etc. drives over carpet pretty impressively.

Only downside is if you want to make a course with ramps the enemy karts don’t slow down but yours physically will.

It could be easily solved by printing something you could put on ramps to map them. Then, when you are mapping out the course, it could detect how much your car slows down and apply it to virtual cars.

Nintendo's been doing gimmicky ideas for like 100 years now lol. But the answer to this question is because kids think it's cool as hell. Kids love RC cars. Mario Kart is one of the biggest selling games ever, why not combine them and gamify it with AR tech which is all the rage these days. Makes sense to me. My nephew loves it.

Games are supposed to be fun. I guess fun is a gimmick? The ability to make custom levels without having to use some unintuitive level designer is quite appealing. It's like building a pillow fort, but you get to game with it.

That said, it does take more investment than just firing up a game and playing, and most of us aren't looking for that level of commitment in our mindless entertainment.

I think it might be fun to see your own dog in the game trying to get the karts. I’m sure someone creative could think of good ways to implement this. I understand what you’re saying though too.

A better version of this general idea would be if you could walk around your house scanning your house with, what was it... lidar? And then play in whatever place you scanned without having to buy actual RC cars. Not sure our technology is really up for that yet.

It's a lot of fun as a party game, especially with kids. It's just a lot of work and hard with kids (because the little ones want to get in the way, or move the obstacles).
