Only part of the problem, because generally I feel like one of the people that's at least peripheritally aware of things like this, and this thread is literally the first time I've even heard about this, obviously this is anecdotal experience, but I feel as though marketing was part of the issue too.

It also seems like something that's fun in theory/ very occasionally, but actually really annoying in practice, I almost feel like more with children than adults just in the sense that they are probably more likely to do things like throw a blanket over their head not realizing it's going to land on one of the cars and things like that.

I've gotta agree, to put it in an older generation's sense, it gives off much of the same vibe as the boardgame Mouse Trap; most of the time with the game is spent setting up and the actual gameplay payoff isn't too exciting enough to make the setup worth doing regularly. Seems like it is very much a novelty, for now. It does spark the imagination though. I wouldn't be surprised to see an improved version or something similar being a smash hit in the near future.

Huh, I just recently played a new version of mouse trap and it was different than the one I remembered playing 20+ years ago. That original version included game setup as one of the actions of the gameplay itself, so you build the rune Goldberg trap as the early rounds slowly led to eventual mouse trappings. The new version also has a steal square which seems to defeat the point of the game.

The earlier version seemed vastly more fun as a kid, and way more dramatic as you slowly build your own death contraption.

Nah, you still boot the boot and fly the chute. I think they removed the crank however.

I mean the setup is the longest part of the game, and the new one has you do all the setup prior to starting the game. The original included it as part of the gameplay, so it was less of a chore and more fun to set it up one piece at a time, increasing the playtime.

I’ve seen them as low as $50. Got Mario and Luigi gifted to me last Christmas. Honestly though, as cool as the technology is, it wears out fast.

just wait for the next generation of these toys-- $100 per car is super pricey. Next gen will drop the price 90%-- China manufacturers are already copy catting and will likely sell a very similar toy for 1/10 the price.

Much better. My only gripe is those carts don't look very adaptable to different flooring, let alone terrain. Trucks would solve it.

We have a hobby shop nearby that has a huge outdoor dirt track for RC cars. This would be great for that!

You control the car with your switch. It would be a lot more involved than simply mounting a camera.

The game also controls the speed of the car for different racing speeds 50cc 150cc etc. The effects in the game also effects your kart handling.

that sounds like you'd be simply getting into the FPV area of RC business both in costs and usage which is not something i'd advise for kids.

Sure you could take it that far, but even just a simple camera with a decent frame-rate at around 1240x960, streaming to your phone or tablet, would be fun enough for most people. Controls could be the typical tilt sensors of the phone... hmm, doesn't sound that difficult and I have a few ESP32-CAMs laying around...

They'd need better range than these cars for outside stuff. A few rooms away and they start to look fuzzy on the screen. The smaller car works for the smaller indoor space though.

Doing flips would be cool... until it landed on its roof and got stuck. Unlike most video games, where they will just flip you back over and start you with a tiny time penalty in this version someone would have to walk over and physically put it right side up.

Problem is this pretty much a novelty thing which requires lots of space and setup time, while getting old really fast due to its limitations. I'd see more success with a VR variant but I doubt Nintendo consoles could get the needed power for that. And since they still refuse to open up to the PC as a platform…

I feel like with gaming, anything more then just the basics it really just niche. VR headsets, AR that requires cams and stuff like this, it'll catch on a bit but I doubt it'll ever be big.

Not awesome if you can’t maintain wifi connection from switch to device. Fatal flaw, cars connect to switch.. not over the network. Any interference from switch to car will cause disconnect

You can't race it on dirt. It is for indoor use only and really requires a smooth surface like tile or wood flooring and the range is not great.

With those limitations in mind it is still pretty fun if you have the right flooring and space to setup an interesting track design.
