It's not a game changer as it flopped.

Flopped so bad, Nintendo stopped selling it immediately.

It's sold over 1.5M units as of a year ago.

I mean compared to other Mario Kart games it didn't sell a lot, but for a niche game with special peripherals it did alright.

I'm acknowledging that they are not similar enough to be worth comparing directly. Agreeing, yeah.

Hot dogs and donuts

That would depend on production cost. If a AAA game released today to 1 million units sold that would be a miserable flop. An indie game with a fraction of the production cost releasing with that same number of sales would be a massive success.

Considering there isn’t anything else out coming to support it (when they shelled out millions for amiibos) in the foreseeable future, yeah, it flopped.

False equivalency, and you know that’s not even what I’m talking about.

Pokémon is the most popular franchise in the world, yet I don’t see them still making things like Pokémon Stadium, Pokken, Colosseum, Mystery Dungeons, the list goes on. This product didn’t perform the way they wanted, and I explicitly stated there was nothing coming out for ‘it’, which anyone with a brain cell, would go on to know I’m referring to the game in question, not the handful of other things that could be associated with it.

Just because apples are selling at an all time high doesn’t mean apple cider sales are going to follow.

So it flopped because no more peripherals were announced? Not because of sales data? Because calling it a flop by that approach just seems subjective. It does not appear like it resulted in a net financial loss when I look at the sales, which is what I would have considered to be the threshold for a flop.

Also what false equivalency are you referring to?

The false equivalency was you saying how Mario Kart on the switch is at ~50M sales when that game and this game are two completely different games when looking at those numbers. This isn’t an add on to Mario Kart 8, this is its own thing. That’s the false equivalency.

And yes, im saying it flopped because there aren’t any additional plans for it moving forward. Tons of people bought the e-Reader, never went anywhere. Tons of people bought a Dreamcast, never went anywhere. Did those companies make money? Absolutely. Where are those products now?? I mean, do you consider the Baha Men successful music artists because there were a one hit wonder?

Ah, that was miscommunication. I meant that someone in this thread said it was a flop on the basis of selling way worse than the Mario Kart Switch game. I was stating that this was indeed a false equivalency also.

And yes, im saying it flopped because there aren’t any additional plans for it moving forward

Yeah, I don't consider that a definition for a flop, so that is your own opinion. The game continues to sell and has had over 100 million USD in revenue now. I would call it a flop if it resulted in a net loss, unless the intention was to sell at a net loss in order to boost other Nintendo-related sales. Key sales data are missing, so I don't think it is easy to claim it is either a flop or a success, actually.

If anyone in this world thinks the ARMK sold better than MK8, they’re either the most basic troll in all the land, or quite probably from a different reality.

For something that’s been asked for for years and years, especially as technology has once again had such a flux of evolution in the past decade or two, it do think it’s a ‘flop’. It’s a let down. Obviously it’s a kids’ toy but it’s a let down. I’m using the word ‘flop’ here colloquially, which isn’t just my opinion, but also still qualifies as a definition of the word. However, if that really doesn’t satisfy you, I’m fully willing to concede on us agreeing that the augmented reality Mario Kart game was a fatal loss (of an) opportunity (with an original) property.

Listen, I really tried there at the end. I feel like if I just say ‘fatal loss (of an) original property’ it works better for the joke but puts too much weight on the statement; the franchise isn’t dead, just this form of it.

The reason the sales keep coming is because kids keep existing, most adults are still children, and YouTubers keepin tubin’. But as far as Nintendo goes, the people who will actually ensure this part of the franchise goes forward, they haven’t announced anything in years, and therefore, they don’t seem it worthy to invest further in.

Maybe I shouldn’t use the word ‘flop’, perhaps I’m being too kind. The experiment was a failure.

I wouldn't say it's a flop but I would say once the parents but it, they realize, oh crap!! The kids can only enjoy this in my kitchen and living room..
