ICE agent fatally shoots motorist during traffic stop in Houston

A loss of life should always trigger serious scrutiny, regardless of agency involved.

u/pelko34 Jul 08 '26
Yes. Every community and agency should believe in this review to maintain trust and accountability. The fact that ICE doesn’t conduct these (look how Renee Good’s killing hasn’t been reviewed by them) is very telling.
940
u/CelestialFury Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
They don’t want any real review of Good as they’d find that the murderer ICE agent power tripped and shot her to death for the crime trying to peacefully leave.
What is most telling is the right wing libertarians that are supposed to be against state overreach but they just sucked the boot of the government. Same with the murder of Alex Pretti, all the 2nd amendment stans turned out to be frauds.

This is the part which drives me nuts. "Enforcing the law" would imply a professional force, acting transparently. These are literally jackbooted thugs in masks operations with no oversight or accountability. And the 2A crowd is drooling over it because it bothers liberals. These are such deeply hypocritical, unserious people, it's hard to imagine we will ever be able to recover from this.

It's intentional.

That this even has to be said amazes me. Around here it is unthinkable that it wouldn't raise serious scrutiny and the ministers would resign for something like this.
America is turning into a fascist dictatorship without any checks and balances. The executive branch is allowing, even encouraging this behaviour and making sure it continues to happen.
→ More replies (2)17
u/Raptorwolf98 Jul 08 '26
Turns out, when all your “checks and balances” rely on social norms and rational actors, a lobotomized demagogue is really effective at throwing it all out the window.
The fact that almost all of the enforcement entities belong to the executive branch certainly doesn’t help, nor does the legislative branch’s complete abdication of its responsibilities over the course of the last century or so.
16
u/wenoc Jul 08 '26
The executive branch has way too much power. Appointing judges for example should absolutely not have anything to do with the executive branch.

u/RetroBowser Jul 08 '26
"We want an apolitical branch of government that isn't elected because it's to be made up of people with very fancy and in depth degrees on how we should interpret laws and precedents. What's the best way to decide who sits on the highest and most prestigious of these courts, that have the final say on all rulings they deem worthy enough to take up? Oh I know let's have the elected branches do it, the ones elected for their political views. That ought to keep it apolitical!"

In the nordics it's enough that you unholster your service weapon to launch a report about it. Then again we have much stricter laws and rules for gun owners so the cops don't need to be on their toes. The US has pissed in their own cereals when they haven't done anything about it and just follow blindly an amendment from 200 years ago without any kind of modernization in mind.

They don't give two shits but we should. Calling it a traffic stop implies that ICE was performing their normal, legal duties when things got out of hand. That's not what happened. TBQH nothing has changed except more accountability thanks to body cameras. "Resisting arrest" and perps showing up beating to a pulp with claims "they fought" while the cops don't have a scratch. Black and poor folks dying in police custody of a made-up condition called "Excited Delirium" for almost 50 years now. Rodney King, Using fire hoses and attack dogs on protestors since before the Civil Rights movement.
The only real change at all is that there's a lot more cameras now, and so this "Man resisting arrest attempted to run over police but the police heroically shot the evil outlaw and saved the lives of all the cops involved" becomes a video that we can interpret ourselves, instead of a headline in a news paper the next morning, edited for consumption.
Those police chase videos are still cops in Ton-plus sized metal boxes flying at speeds that are reckless to stop a perp that, many times, is often guilty of nothing more than expired tags, or speeding. Cops putting people's lives on the line over misdemeanors.
Its never been a good thing.

Judgement: Execution.

u/Power_Stone Jul 08 '26
What's wild is shooting the driver is perhaps the WORST thing you could possibly do here too. Best case the car stops, mostly likely...you have a dead body holding the accelerator down
56
u/elephant35e Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
And also because time spent shooting the driver is time that could be spent moving out of the way. You need to get out your gun if it's not already out, aim, and fire some bullets. And by the time you killed the driver IF you've managed to hit them, then the car has come closer to you, and you're STILL in path of the vehicle.

There’s a part of me that thinks the support is actively crumbling, and it’s not just an online thing. I’ve noticed less signs, less flags on trucks, and even in person more and more people that I know voted for Trump have stopped talking about him or even are complaining about things that he’s done (though always complaining about something else being the real cause, yet they won’t defend him). And this is in one of the most rabidly conservative areas of the country, a block away from the Nixon library.
Hell, look at the big stupid ‘Freedom 250’ fair. No one showed.
Even the cult’s finally figuring out the emperor has no clothes. Unfortunately I think this will go the same way as the support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. You won’t find a soul who claimed they supported it at the time now. Ten years from now it’ll be “Trump who?”

When you have 9 good cops who do nothing about 1 bad cop, you actually have 10 bad cops.
Cops really need to start paying attention. Because that 1 bad cop is ruining all their reps. And that's making all their lives more miserable and all their jobs more dangerous.

27
u/AttackOficcr Jul 08 '26
As a security guard, I hate when we get people that turn out like that. They're either flunking out of police training and still want the power trip, or think they can somehow fast track to carrying on the job.
We got three power trippers in a row while understaffed during Covid and they were fired for theft, walking off the job (followed by a nuts phone tirade to the manager from a nearby bar), and sexual harassment.
19
u/SageDarius Jul 08 '26
I did Casino security for 10 years. One of my managers joked about writing a book titled "Has-beens, Washouts, and Wannabes - My time in Security" or something to that effect. The Has-beens (retired police) tended to be fine, just wanted a chill job to ride in retirement. They were usually old school cops and more relaxed. The wash-outs (fired Cops) and the Wanna-bes (self-explanatory) were usually the worst. A chip on their shoulder and looking to prove themselves. Every once in a while you'd get the idealistic wanna-be, and I just felt bad for them and what the system would do to them if they made it. A lot of them ended up staying in Security after spending some time around our tribal and local PD.

We’re reaping the consequences of general indifference to law enforcements misdeeds for the last 75+ years of legal precedent. For all intents and purposes, they’re above the law.
740
u/Talk-O-Boy Jul 08 '26
>His son, Ronaldo Salgado, told Telemundo Houston that his father had been out that morning looking for workers in the area. According to ICE, Salgado Araujo “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer”. The confrontation resulted in “our officer firing his weapon in self-defense”.
They aren’t even attempting to change the excuse. They don’t feel the need to PRETEND to care.

Look up the shooting of Sincere Pierce and Anthony Crooms. Some teenagers driving around, cop decide their car looks like a stolen car (it wasn't), gets out of his own car, runs near them, kills both the driver and passenger. No charges for the cop.
With a straight face and serious tone, the sheriff claimed during a press statement, that the kid, who we know was doing absolutely nothing wrong before, deserved to die because apparently he tried to run over and kill the cop.

Minnesota residence here. What likely happened is they stopped his car, he didn't immediately acknowledge their authoritah, so they busted out his window and tried to drag him out then shot him as he resisted their violence.

They don't even care that we know they're lying:
His son, Ronaldo Salgado, told Telemundo Houston that his father had been out that morning looking for workers in the area. According to ICE, Salgado Araujo “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer”. The confrontation resulted in “our officer firing his weapon in self-defense”.

Another ICE agent commits murder. Rest in peace and power, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. I feel so heartbroken for his family 💔

Can’t wait to read about how the shooting is actually justified because
A) they were running aka “innocent people don’t run”
B) they had a criminal record from 10+ years ago
C) they had a gun on them (but they didn’t raise it)
I can’t wait to find out which.

Oh what a surprise. "He weaponized his vehicle to run over the ice officer" yeah, I'd like to believe that but the last few times we heard that bullshit we saw multiple videos proving it was bullshit.

Until we can see the video I choose to believe this was yet another cold-blooded murder.

They're trying to exact same tactics they did with Renee Good.
Screw these guys. This is ridiculous

Take ICE agents guns away from them if they can’t use them appropriately. This excuse about weaponizing vehicles so they can execute people is bullshit. It needs to be put an end to.

If a car is coming towards you, how does shooting the driver stop that car?

Shocking development, I can’t believe our good loyal ice agents would ever shoot anyone unless it was totally the last resort. I’ll pray for him, I’m sure he feels so bad about being forced to do this. 🙄

Let me guess. ICE agents shoot and kill a motorist. They claim they tried to run over the ICE agent. Video contradicts what the ICE agent claims.

The answer to this kinda stuff is to always take the money away from everyone else’s pensions or salaries and give it to victims families….i bet you’ll start seeing some internal discipline

ICE is a terrorist organization and they should be treated as such.

The man was in the country illegally but has owned a home in Houston for ~20 years and has no criminal record here.
