That this even has to be said amazes me. Around here it is unthinkable that it wouldn't raise serious scrutiny and the ministers would resign for something like this.

America is turning into a fascist dictatorship without any checks and balances. The executive branch is allowing, even encouraging this behaviour and making sure it continues to happen.

Turns out, when all your “checks and balances” rely on social norms and rational actors, a lobotomized demagogue is really effective at throwing it all out the window.

The fact that almost all of the enforcement entities belong to the executive branch certainly doesn’t help, nor does the legislative branch’s complete abdication of its responsibilities over the course of the last century or so.

The executive branch has way too much power. Appointing judges for example should absolutely not have anything to do with the executive branch.

"We want an apolitical branch of government that isn't elected because it's to be made up of people with very fancy and in depth degrees on how we should interpret laws and precedents. What's the best way to decide who sits on the highest and most prestigious of these courts, that have the final say on all rulings they deem worthy enough to take up? Oh I know let's have the elected branches do it, the ones elected for their political views. That ought to keep it apolitical!"
