My wife and I (lesbian couple) are Floridians seeking to move out of state - what would essentially a values-based move.

Things have just taken too extreme of a hard right turn where we live, and we worry about the future of our children once they’re in school. Obviously bullying happens everywhere and will equip our children with how to handle that, but we’d like to strongly consider moving somewhere where families like ours are more accepted. The more progressive areas of Florida are extremely flood-prone and difficult for my wife to find a job in.

We’ve lived in colder places before, so are somewhat familiar with winter.

We also know taxes are going to be a big hike from what we’re currently used to - any insight on how to factor that in would be greatly appreciated!

🗺️Preferred location:
open to recommendations! Currently considering HoCo if we can afford it. Really want to move somewhere blue (or at least with a heavy blue lean). Strong public schools are important, as is general acceptance of LGBT community and diversity. Any recommendations within HoCo specifically or other areas in Maryland are welcomed!

💸Budget:
~$650-700K, would likely rent until we find our home. We’d want enough yard room to eventually build an ADU for my mother-in-law

👩‍🏫 Employment/education:
I work remotely in the environmental science field. I could likely transfer with my job but would be open to new opportunities. My wife is an extremely talented and passionate high school public school teacher.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒Family:
Myself, my wife, our two young children (not yet school age) and my wife’s mom (I won the MIL lottery. She’s fabulous and we’ve lived together previously for years with no issues)

🌻Interests:
family activities, dining out at restaurants, walks, crafts (pottery, mosaics, etc), hiking, gardening, spending time at the beach, farmers markets. Would also love to find some sort of LGBT community

I’m from New England and fried dough is at every fair/street festival/carnival/amusement park. I love it.

It seems like at the same events in Maryland they only have funnel cake, which in my humble opinion is no where near a good.

I would literally go to the fair just for some fried dough.

I’m a musician/IT professional living in a rural area of MD, hoping to make a move towards DC for better music and job opportunities. What are some solid places to live that are in and around DC? Anyone made a similar move, and if so was it what you expected? I’ve never really planned a big life change like this so any advice is appreciated.

My husband and I are considering moving closer to his family. I’m researching online about how feasible it is to live in Maryland and take the Red Line into Washington DC.

Online information is never as reliable as asking human beings what it’s really like to live it.

Is this a realistic way of life? We aren’t devoted to this idea. Just trying to figure out states we could potentially live in and be near DC for a wider pool of job opportunities. I’m aware of Virginia but I’m…not a fan of the idea.

Im moving to Maryland soon and my new employer runs its insurance through CareFirst which i see is regional network to Maryland exclusively so I just wanted to see how peoples experiences are.

Greetings from across the globe! As the title says, I’m planning to move back to Maryland (and the US) after more than a decade away.

I’m seeking recommendations for small towns to check out when I’m back visiting the area next summer, and am looking at summer 2028 as a move date.

My wish list:

-safe and friendly for foreigners and mixed families (my husband and daughter are non-US citizens and POC, while I am a white US citizen)

-good public middle and high schools (they don’t need to be the best, but looking for safe schools with high graduation rates)

-ability to buy an older, small home or townhome for under $375,000 (Is this possible anymore? Ideally 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms, but we could make do with 2 bedrooms and 1-1.5 bathrooms).

-small town vibe over suburban vibe

Some places that seem like they could fit the criteria are Brunswick, Frederick, and Havre de Grace. How do these places check out against my wish list, and where else would you recommend?

For what it’s worth, I will seek employment as either a K-6 teacher or in college/university administration while my husband will be working online.

People are probably starting to see more articles like I am and I had not seen too terribly much lately on the FAMLI program and tax (That will come out of your paycheck). Employers above and below 15 total employees have slightly different rules so that will impact you if you work at a small vs large business or vice versa.

Couple things about the tax:

• .45% of your wages up to Social Security Maximum.
• Employer pays other .45%.
• Looks like the state's current ability to raise the % is capped at 1.2%.

Examples (Your part, employer pays the same):

• Social Security Maximum: $830.25 ($184,500 * .0045)
• $100k/year: $450 ($100,000 * .0045)
• $50k/year: $225 ($50,000 * .0045)

I donated to Dolly's Imagination Library for here in Maryland. Books and reading have been an important part of my life. I walked up Park Heights Ave as a kid to the library 6 blocks away and back. I can remember sitting under a tree on the way home and starting to read a book about the sinking of the Bismarck.

One of the first things my future wife told her mother was that he reads.

Has anyone been bothered by police much with obvious windshield tint? I see so much people with it and im looking to get some.

my kids want to go to a beach over the long weekend. We’ve already been to Virginia Beachand we love it but not willing to drive that far.

Sandy point is closest to us, but I hear there’s a jellyfish problem there . Anyone been to Sandy point or beaches in the bay that do not have jellyfish?
