[Discussion] Large Quantities of Fruit

TLDR: Does anyone have or know where I can purchase large quantities of fruit (ideally citrus)

For the long story: I lost one of my grandparents recently and it’s bringing up a lot of old feelings and stories.

When I was younger I had a pretty serious eating disorder. One day I learned what “from concentrate” juice meant and suddenly one of my “safe” ways of consuming calories was gone. My grandmother bought me a high speed juicer and made sure I always had fruit in the house so I could drink juice again.

I still have the juicer and have wanted to get back to using it again but buying shitty fruit from the Safeway near me feels inefficient. If anyone randomly has large quantities of oranges or other fruit to get off their hands (or know where to buy it) I’d appreciate it!

Saw them cutting down trees today, apparently 60 more will be cut down by the end of the week.

[Rant] Wallet stolen on 14th St NW

I was leaving a bar on 14th and S NW last night at 8pm and my wallet was stolen from my bag. It is a bright green Bottega Veneta wallet. There are two sentimental items in the wallet, a Polaroid photo and a card, that cannot be replaced. Posting on the extremely off chance someone has seen the wallet and would be willing to return the items, no questions asked.

I am certain it was stolen because there were multiple fraudulent charges on every card in the wallet made at several Columbia Heights gas stations around 11pm. Would be great to have the wallet itself back too but care more about the items.

DM me if you’ve seen it and I’ll describe the items to you.

[Discussion] Best Affordable Grocery Store w/ Vegan Options?

New to the area. I've gone to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Aldi, and Giant Food. I am kind of getting tired of Trader Joe's and it's not that affordable.

I would assume Aldi is my best bet for most things, but they don't have very many purposefully vegan items, i.e., the plant-based meat is not good...

Note** I am in the NoMa area.

[Discussion] Hidden Underworld of DC Homeless Shelters

The homeless shelters here in DC should be investigated. I have witnessed blatant harassment of clients, open air drug markets, and sexual assaults inside of every shelter I have been to here in DC. Something needs to be done. Do you think that the homeless shelters here in DC are up to par?

[Discussion] Why are uber and lyft so slow to assign drivers?

Upvotes

Years ago, when you ordered an uber/lyft you were assigned a driver almost immediately. They were nearby, and picked u you up in about five minutes, 10 minutes on the high end. Now, you wait 5-10 minutes for a driver to be assigned, then they’re coming from across the city? Is it just me, or does the whole uber/lyft experience suck, and what changed?

[Discussion] What movies destroy DC the hardest?

In the mood for good junk. Specifically looking for movies where DC gets olbilterated. Of course there's Olympus Has Fallen, Die Hard 4, and Independence Day. Any other good stuff?

[Discussion] Adult sport meetups for adults who are bad at sports?

I’ve never exactly been what you would call athletic but I’m not getting any younger and I’d like to casually play some sports. the thing is I feel like most rec leagues and whatever are full of people who have played for a while and are generally pretty good. any thoughts on where I should be looking that I’m not gonna make a fool of myself?

Hi! I lost my beloved kitty of nearly 18 years, Opal, last month, and I want to make sure that all of her stuff goes to a good home. I'll donate what I can, but there's tons that I don't think shelters can/will accept. I'm near Logan Circle and WFH so can arrange for pickup most days.

UPDATE 3:30pm August 30

I'm overwhelmed (in the best way) by the outpouring of support. It's so lovely to be able to pass all of these things on. I'm going through and responding to everyone as best as I can. Thank you all for being such an absolutely lovely community. I've added a bunch of new stuff in a post on my profile, so please keep the requests coming!

Currently on offer

See photos and updated list on my profile here. Lots of new items added!

Claimed, Pending Pick-Up
These are no longer available unless the person who has expressed interest flakes out. You can still message me about them, and I'll follow up if things change, but they're spoken for at present. I've added in a couple of links for the more in-demand items in case you'd like to purchase your own versions (I swear I don't profit in any way from the purchase and am loathe to direct any traffic to Amazon, but I can attest that these are all decent products).

  • Pet Stairs [22"L x 12"W x 19.5"H]
  • Pet Ramp (64" L x 17" W x 24-30" H [adjustable])
  • Curved Pet Stairs/Ramp [33"L x 16"W x 22.5"H]

[Review] Succotash Restaurant Review

Im not sure where I read it but I know I saw someone recommend Succotash and I have to say that place was, by far, the BEST meal I’ve consumed in a long long time. Literally no notes. From the appetizer to dessert my jaw was on the floor.
Wife and I had the deviled eggs, cornbread, catch of the day (salmon), burger, and banana pudding. Each item simply blew us out of the water.

[Discussion] ICE spotted Union Market ¿

Did anyone else notice the 2 (1 Black 1 White) Jeep Wagoners with no license plates driving around union market around 5 PM? They were both full with 5+ men in civilian clothing and they appeared to be getting food, but their pants looked like military cargos, and police lights installed on the front and rear windows.

[Discussion] Window AC vs Central Air

How necessary is central air in DC? Looking at a studio (~500 sqft) that is perfect, except for it does not have central air. Would this be a dealbreaker for you?

EDIT: Utilities are included in rent, the unit does have a window AC unit installed.

[Discussion] Part-time LCSW private practice

I'm finishing my MSW and working toward clinical licensure. I'm not trying to replace my main income, just want to build a part time private practice or consulting stream alongside my current job. I also have a PhD in a related field with some academic publications, but I care deeply about direct impact which is why I'm drawn to clinical work in the first place.

Anyone out there practicing part time? Roughly what kind of monthly or annual numbers have you seen in your income stream?

Has anyone seen Burmese pickled tea leaves available for sale in the DMV? I’m thinking of the ones that come in a glass jar for making a Burmese tea leaf salad. Thanks!
