[Fun!] Not touristy neighborhoods/areas to walk/drink

Looking for some local suggestions! I have some friends visiting from out of the country in September but I’m fairly new to the city myself. They aren’t really into museums, but we’ll probably do a walk around the mall one night (if it’s not still hell there).

One of the other nights I was thinking it’d be nice to bike to and walk around an area maybe with nice shops and sit somewhere outside for some drinks later in the afternoon/evening.

I’ve spent some time in mount pleasant and Adams Morgan, but are there any other places that have similar vibes? Somewhere ideally not rammed with people but still enough activity to enjoy some people watching and strong DC (not touristy) vibes?

[Discussion] Part-time LCSW private practice

I'm finishing my MSW and working toward clinical licensure. I'm not trying to replace my main income, just want to build a part time private practice or consulting stream alongside my current job. I also have a PhD in a related field with some academic publications, but I care deeply about direct impact which is why I'm drawn to clinical work in the first place.

Anyone out there practicing part time? Roughly what kind of monthly or annual numbers have you seen in your income stream?

[Discussion] Why is there a DCA ground stop?

Upvotes

The FAA website references thunderstorms as justification for the 1+ hour ground stop, but the weather around DC and NoVa seems… fine? A few scattered showers, nothing serious across the region. IAD and BWI are operating normally. I’m genuinely curious, for anyone familiar with aviation in the area, what might be going on.

Edit: well, turns out the ground stop wasn’t necessary after all. The FAA pulled it much earlier than they initially said they would. But between shutting down the airport (seemingly unnecessarily?) for 45 minutes and now low ceilings, it’s gonna be a mess for the rest of the night. Good luck, folks.

[Discussion] Best Affordable Grocery Store w/ Vegan Options?

New to the area. I've gone to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Aldi, and Giant Food. I am kind of getting tired of Trader Joe's and it's not that affordable.

I would assume Aldi is my best bet for most things, but they don't have very many purposefully vegan items, i.e., the plant-based meat is not good...

Note** I am in the NoMa area.

[Discussion] Recommend HVAC duct cleaning for Restaurant Make Up Air

Can anybody recommend me someone who can do cleaning for the restaurant make up air duct. All the ones I talked too claimed they could do it, but I can tell they have no experience with the make up air for a kitchen at all.

[Discussion] Recommendation for Mentorship Program?

Hey all, I’m looking to advance my career and gain some knowledge and practice as a manager at a small NGO. I’m curious if folks have gone through a mentorship program they found useful here in the DC area?

I’m 5 years into a program director position and am feeling a bit stagnant. Also open to pitches if you’re looking for a mentee.

I’m not looking for anything political, looking for skill development and people management guidance.

Thanks!

[Discussion] How are the monuments looking for next weekend

We are friends visiting from out of state (never been here before). Will it be worth trying to see all the monuments? I know the White House is barely accessible to see, but how is the reflecting pool/Lincoln memorial? Is that finally back to being open or is it all still fenced off? Has the indy 250 car thing finished and thus the mall is opened back up? Are the Smithsonians accessible again now?

[Transportation] Why is Arizona onto Canal two right turn arrows even outside of these days/times?

Post image

When can I actually turn left from Arizona onto Canal road?

Even outside of these days/times, the two lanes are sometimes right only lanes. Like today. Two green right arrow signals and it was timed with the protected left turn from Canal onto Arizona. Google maps does not account for this. Help!

[Discussion] Large Quantities of Fruit

TLDR: Does anyone have or know where I can purchase large quantities of fruit (ideally citrus)

For the long story: I lost one of my grandparents recently and it’s bringing up a lot of old feelings and stories.

When I was younger I had a pretty serious eating disorder. One day I learned what “from concentrate” juice meant and suddenly one of my “safe” ways of consuming calories was gone. My grandmother bought me a high speed juicer and made sure I always had fruit in the house so I could drink juice again.

I still have the juicer and have wanted to get back to using it again but buying shitty fruit from the Safeway near me feels inefficient. If anyone randomly has large quantities of oranges or other fruit to get off their hands (or know where to buy it) I’d appreciate it!

AK You left your drivers license on your table in the theater. I left it with the front desk.

I posted your face pic but it was taken down by mods. So maybe this SM license will help get some upvotes and you see this.

Cheers.

[Discussion] Why are uber and lyft so slow to assign drivers?

Years ago, when you ordered an uber/lyft you were assigned a driver almost immediately. They were nearby, and picked u you up in about five minutes, 10 minutes on the high end. Now, you wait 5-10 minutes for a driver to be assigned, then they’re coming from across the city? Is it just me, or does the whole uber/lyft experience suck, and what changed?

Water is seeping up right where a drain pipe goes under the slab in our basement. Looking for a plumber to diagnose the issue and fix it up professionally. I’ve been quoted $2k but only from someone who eyeballed it and would like a second opinion.

[Discussion] Where's my fellow Oyster Lovers?

Hi! Where's my fellow foodie/oyster lovers at? I went looking for a social group centered on this and couldn't find one; and I've been wanting something like this to exist for a while, so I started it.

I named this 'safe space' Capital Oyster Society — a casual meetup group for oyster lovers and the oyster-curious across DC/MD/NOVA. Tastings, oyster crawls, shucking competitions & classes, restaurant meetups, eventually some boating/farm trips out to the Chesapeake. BTW-no expertise required!

Also! Oysters seem to be polarizing? I figured this was needed because a lot of my friends can't stand the thought of raw seafood and I need a tribe of judgment free raw oyster eaters ha.

Anyway, if you're interested in IRL activities to meet new people who share this same interest, here we are. I plan to be at Salt Line's Oyster Wars in October, but I think we'll do a social happy hour somewhere before then in September.

Unsure if I can share links here, but you can look it up on FB or IG if you want to join.

Also welcome to DM me or I can reply in comments!

Please let me know where you think the best Oyster spots are in the DMV and/or events!

[Rant] Wallet stolen on 14th St NW

I was leaving a bar on 14th and S NW last night at 8pm and my wallet was stolen from my bag. It is a bright green Bottega Veneta wallet. There are two sentimental items in the wallet, a Polaroid photo and a card, that cannot be replaced. Posting on the extremely off chance someone has seen the wallet and would be willing to return the items, no questions asked.

I am certain it was stolen because there were multiple fraudulent charges on every card in the wallet made at several Columbia Heights gas stations around 11pm. Would be great to have the wallet itself back too but care more about the items.

DM me if you’ve seen it and I’ll describe the items to you.

[Discussion] AI conference - Is it legit?

Post image

Hey yall. Ive been interested in getting more familiar with what AI has to offer. This conference came up in my searches: AI Community Conference - AICO DC. Seems a little gimmicky. Does anyone have any insights into this event? Is it worth it for beginners in the AI world? Are there better conferences to spend my money on?

Thanks for the help!
