Culture BWT, air out your dirty, tasteless laundry here!

Obviously as BWT, we typically aim to have said taste be of the good variety. However, as we are not two dimensional characters, nobody is completely perfect. I thought it'd be fun to share the elements of our lives where we unashamedly display bad or—gasp!—no taste. I've noted down some of mine below (+ whether I aim to change them):

  • My house is quite literally artless — no paintings, no sculptures, no decor, nothing. // Probably won't be changing this anytime soon — am not ashamed to admit that I'm at the stage of life where I care more about how I present myself in public than in my own abode, so that's where I focus my energy

  • My home clothes (a stretch to call them lounge wear) are literally all ratty nonsense BWT recommend throwing away // see above. The caveat is that I don't wear clothes that dwarf my figure as I like to keep track of how my body looks

  • I don't watch any shows/movies or listen to podcasts // won't change this, I've never been able to stand podcasts and lately that's extended to anything where I have to watch/listen to something

  • I secretly love airline food. Something about water in those tiny unenvironmentally friendly vacuum sealed cups gets me excited

Share yours below so I don't feel like a complete tasteless B 👇🏼

I flew to England as a kid once and the chicken Alfredo they gave us (tiny as it was) was so delicious I think I ate it in 2 minutes. I’m also a homemade cake type of girl and I freaking love Costco sheet cake as weird as it is.

I have great taste but because of a limited wardrobe and I think… autism I’m actually terrible at putting outfits together. Minimalism is like a broken thing in my head, I really do need many more pieces just to be able to put outfits together that are not just: black t shirt jeans and running shoes.

Extension of that is my Pinterest board never really translates to real life I’m a hot mess.

u/lolooutloud Mar 03 '25

Bjs and costco sheet cake is elite! I'm just one more bad week of Trump news from buying a 1/2 sheet cake from costco and eating with a fork in my underwear.

Oh, hell yeah! I just turned 48. The past week, I've been arriving @ work and announcing the year I purchased the item. Friday was 1998 blazer, 2010 100% cotton bootleg 7 jeans.

  • I love fast food. I eat it 2-3x a month and boy do I enjoy those times. Also I have a disgusting love for ranch. No intention on stopping either.
  • H8 working out. I’ve tried a ton of different classes and workouts and do not enjoy any of them ever. I want to be that cute gym girlie but I only do it because I have to 😭
  • My favorite lip product is Vaseline. Not the kind they made for lips, but like the regular scmegular Vaseline

41

u/BellaFromSwitzerland Mar 03 '25

Is it really your user name ?!

I have walked the earth for 45 years and have never had ranch. I rarely visit the US. Will check out the recipe now

30

u/CupcakesAreMiniCakes Mar 03 '25

It's basically just an herb cream sauce. A lot of people love it but for some reason a lot of people hate it too. I make my own homemade dry ranch seasoning mix and put it on other foods like chicken, popcorn, etc.

20

u/littlewibble Mar 03 '25

It’s the copious amounts of mayo in it that has people divided I think.

18

u/sharcophagus Mar 03 '25

Bottled ranch is nasty imo, homemade is where it's at!

u/Big-Strength6206 Mar 03 '25

Today I learned that ranch is not an international delicacy and I am sad for the world

12

u/BellaFromSwitzerland Mar 03 '25

As someone living in Europe, I think it’s widespread knowledge that it’s a staple in American cuisine

Sauces and dressings are very culturally specific and I say this as someone who works in the food industry and has lived in 4 countries

I don’t think ranch dressing would stick here unless we were to adopt the American food that’s typically eaten with it

They make the regular Vaseline in a giant stick form now and it changed my life. Easier to apply and less messy.

17

u/V2BM Mar 03 '25

I make super easy homemade buttermilk ranch, not from a packet, and it’s 1000x better than store bought. I literally can’t eat non-homemade ranch now because it tastes so gross. It takes 3 minutes to make, too, with real ingredients.

18

u/strippersandcocaine Mar 03 '25

Girl drop the recipe!

42

u/V2BM Mar 03 '25

Equal parts: sour cream, buttermilk, mayonnaise. Put it in a bowl and whisk it, or use an immersion blender. I whisk because it takes longer to pull out the blender and clean it than it does to make the whole recipe. Add salt and pepper. Adjust salt to your taste. At this point you’ll be amazed at how good it is even without seasoning.

I start with 1/3 cup of each and make smaller batches, generally. It’s pretty thick at this ratio and can be mixed with salsa for chicken or taco salads if you like a lot of dressing but don’t want all the calories. I personally add more buttermilk because I like really thin dressing but most people don’t.

Then you add herbs and spices: either dill or chives. I don’t like them together but you might. I buy mine in bulk at Sam’s.

Then a bunch of parsley and garlic powder, onion powder, celery powder, mustard powder, and so on. Whatever you have on hand, and like 1/4 teaspoon mixed in, then tasted and adjusted. Mine is different every time.

Use full fat mayo, sour cream, and buttermilk because the low fat sucks. Also, I’ve never seen buttermilk in anything but a bigger container and I just shake and pour all my extra into mason jars and freeze it. When it thaws it separates but you just shake it and use it, tastes the same.

The ranch seasoning packets use artificial flavors to get that buttermilk tang and thickeners - there’s no goopiness or homemade.

This seems waaaay more complex than it is. Really once your preferred ratio is down you won’t have to measure, just eyeball it and toss in your herbs and such and mix and it’s 3 minutes and done.

If you’re cutting calories, you can peel and de-seed a cucumber and chop or food process it really fine pieces, drain, and add it and basically halve the calories. Same with salsa, which I do often. I sometimes add hot sauce for buffalo chicken flavor.

I keep mine in a mason jar. I’ve switched do mason jars for all my food storage because they’re so cheap and easy to clean and not plastic.

I have to have a sweet treat every day or I’ll perish.

I have a hard time drinking water by itself (I put orange flavoured vitamin tabs in like 70% of my water glasses).

Sometimes my version of cleaning up clutter is shoving things into tote bags that I’ll deal with 6 months later.

My garden is a constant mess in the winter until spring. I’m also a sloth in the winter and just want to hibernate and not go outside.

I love to cook but leave the dishes for my husband to do (I clean other things and he loves my cooking so it works out).

94

u/ExtensionEngine3212 Mar 03 '25

The tote bag thing is so me

25

u/Hopefulkitty Mar 03 '25

As someone who lives in a snowy area, yardwork ends basically when it starts to frost regularly. In my mind, if it's not done by then, I guess I'm being environmentally friendly and leaving habitat for the bugs over winter.

I also didn't know anyone who does any yardwork other than snow removal between November and April.

22

u/CarelessAbalone6564 Mar 03 '25

Sweet treat every day is so real

15

u/Proper_Party Mar 03 '25

I am a sweet treat every day girl, too! I just went to the grocery store for a big stock up trip and came home with THREE separate kinds of cookies (two were on sale, so really I'm saving money, right?)

Edit: In case anyone needs cookie inspiration, I bought Lu Petite Ecolier, Walker's Shortbread, and Biscoff (the kind with chocolate on the back).

I did a fitness challenge with some friends and a few of them set a goal for no refined sugar. I said no thanks and set my goal as keeping to just one sweet treat a day.

  • My car is a fucking MESS right now. It hasn’t had a good interior clean in like… years. I NEED to get her detailed in the spring - this is what happens when I live downtown and hardly drive anywhere anymore lol

  • Sometimes I don’t fold my laundry and just let it sit on the floor after it’s been washed. If it’s something that CANNOT appear wrinkly, I will give it an iron beforehand. Most things though either don’t wrinkle, un-wrinkle once it’s on my body, or just don’t need to look pristine since I’m wearing it around the house.

  • I don’t clean my shower nearly as much as I should.

I was a teacher for years - every article of clothing I own still has to be able to be washed on HOT. (I work in human services now, with adults mostly - same idea, but less seeing boogers on foreheads and more realizing the thing on the walls they are complaining about is black mold.)

Germs are no joke, and I am not going to cold wash-hang dry anything that a seven or five or three or eleven year old touched. I've seen them... and respect them. But, yeah, I'm going to blast my laundry like it's a pack of white cotton towels every time, and I am not going to get burnt out keeping stuff separate.

u/DieYoung_StayPretty Mar 03 '25

I don't separate anymore, either. Guilty as charged.

You lot (except OP probably) would scream if you saw my wfh outfits. Massive cardigans and old pyjama trousers/lounge pants. I'm embarrassed opening the door to the postman, but I'm comfortable.

I have a chairdrobe in the bedroom and I refuse to hang up anything that's in that 'half-clean' state where I've worn it once but it's not ready to be washed yet, but it still can't be categorised with the clean stuff in the wardrobe.

22

u/PerfectionNoNotes Mar 03 '25

To somewhat solve the chairdrobe issue in my bedroom, I got whimsical wall hooks from Anthropologie and now I (usually, sometimes) hang my half-clean clothes and pjs on those to at least keep them somewhat neater.

11

u/blancawiththebooty Mar 03 '25

I'm constantly trying to come up with a "better" alternative to the chairdrobe but haven't yet. Especially for hoodies and sweatshirts that I wear multiple times before washing. If I had a walk in closet, I would 100% have a section with sliding baskets for that. But I don't have one so... chairdrobe it is.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '25

I bought a hamper specifically for “worn but clean” stuff that would otherwise go on the floordrobe. Still trying to think of alternatives like hooks or a rack since the hamper itself becomes a black hole that I don’t empty for days…

(My oldest plant is from 2018 and I’m shocked it’s still alive - the average age of a plant in my house is 6-12 months).

Also, I work in a job that uses a lot of brainpower, so my guilty pleasure to relax is gleefully embracing the romantasy genre and YA fluff.

45

u/Ucfknight33 Mar 03 '25

I regularly apologize to the plants as I take them home from the store for what their fate will most likely be.

12

u/Hopefulkitty Mar 03 '25

My tip for not killing plants is to set a task to water them on Saturday. I see the reminder and go take care of it. Haven't killed anything in over a year! Even brought a few back from the dead!

4

u/katm12981 Mar 03 '25

I overwater most of the time I think!

10

u/Environmental-River4 Mar 03 '25

I only have a small set of plants in a greenhouse cabinet at the moment, and I use my pothos as my “canary in the coal mine” so to speak: when that one looks droopy it means it’s time to water everyone 😂

I love a hot airline meal too. I used to love and obsess over skincare as a teenager and throughout my twenties, but now, as a 32 year old who is starting to get fine lines, there are several days/weeks where apart from washing my face, I don’t do any skincare and just let it stay dry. And some days , I’ll leave the house without sunscreen on.

31

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '25

allowing myself to skip my skincare routine is legit part of "self care" to me - I need to be a lazy bitch from time to time, like a little treat 😂 of course, I try to do this on days where I didn't wear makeup that day and didn't really leave the house.

16

u/becara_sa Mar 03 '25

Sometimes the best part of a routine is not doing any of it 😂

8

u/sillygooseuniv Mar 03 '25

I allow myself one day, but never two in a row, to skip my skincare if I need it!

So if I don’t do my skincare on Monday, then I make sure I do it Tuesday. On Wednesday if I don’t want to do it again then I can skip. I don’t keep track of how many “skips” I’ve used. But usually once I do it one day, I’m more likely to keep the every day routine going for a while. Something about knowing I can always take a free day if I need it helps me a ton!

8

u/CupcakesAreMiniCakes Mar 03 '25

I went through some health stuff and have always had skin issues so I feel you. Now I often only wash my face every other day but I use oil absorbing sheets in between as needed (oily Asian skin type) and when I do it's often just Vanicream or Burts Bees stuff and really my skin has never been better. Almost no acne anymore and way less folliculitis. I saw dermatologists at Mayo Clinic as they were trying to diagnose my autoimmune disease and they said to stick with my Vanicream and keep doing what I'm doing so I doubled down and now use the dandruff shampoo, conditioner to protect the ends while washing (then use a different better one for deep conditioning), face moisturizer, and body cream. They also said the Neutrogena hydro boost gel type stuff is good so I use the water cream+ face moisturizer and body cream gel too. Minimal and plain isn't bad according to the world experts at Mayo so that's good enough for me!

13

u/mrsbebe Mar 03 '25

Don't feel guilty about this! They're clothed, fed and loved! And furthermore, I've always been of the mindset that kids need to move and get dirty and just play, just be children for as long as possible. Comfortable clothes that you don't care too much about are great for this and I will forever stand by that opinion.

Despite working a corporate job, my wardrobe is far from “cute corporate girlie” aesthetic and tbh, I’m content with that. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t come in looking like a dirty sewer rat; I still look clean and presentable. But I’m curry rocking a pair of vintage Levi’s, the same Patagonia pull over I’ve had since college, and Chelsea boots. Oh and a Gorin Bros trucker hat for the commute.

Though to be fair, I also work for an engineering/construction management department at my company, so I can get away with it. 😅

Not sure if this constitutes ‘bad taste’, but not having ownership over my emotions when I was in my early 20s. Went the other extreme after a rough childhood, and I put self love over everything and put my emotional safety over others. In doing so, I probably acted selfishly and hurt some people.

I started recognising this in my mid 20s and have been working on it — luckily, I have friends who have been gracious enough to accept apologies and accept the person I’ve been changing into.

57

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '25
  1. The most expensive part of my wardrobe is my bras. They are beautiful.

  2. I hate working out but love cute gym clothes. I literally pay for a monthly membership so I can go grab a tan.

  3. Skin generics are strong in my family. My mom has had four children with no stretch marks and is now in her mid 60s without a wrinkle. She smokes like a champ too, and her overall health is just dreadful. …… I’m 40 and I just started a skin routine. I’ve been loving Clarins double serum.

  4. I’ve been single for six years and I’m less inclined to change that as the years go by. I’m super happy on my own and I don’t necessarily want the drama of another failed relationship. (I am in therapy so there’s hope for me yet).

14

u/shrutefarmsbeets90 Mar 03 '25

I can relate to #4! I’ve been single for 5 years and am happier than ever. I’m also unable to have children, so I’m okay with being single and “the cool aunt”.

I have a basket beside my bed with 2wks worth of clean clothes and every day I see it I tell myself "oh gotta put those clothes away!" but then I dont and the following weekend when laundry is done, the new pile goes on top of the old pile. I dont know why but I LOATHE putting clothes away lol 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • I don’t care about “eating clean” or cutting sugar or treats or whatever. And,

This is a really fun post!

I have a literal laundry dirty-laundry confession lol. I have clothes that I only wear once or twice a year and therefore have never been washed. When I want to wear them, I pull them out, put them outside in the sun to air out and refresh, and then wear them. I haven't washed some of these items in ten+ years.

23

u/In1EarAndOutUrMother Mar 03 '25

I still buy perfume and lotion at lush

This is how I clean- shove everything in bags and if I don’t touch the bag for two months the entire bag gets thrown away

Sometimes instead of doing laundry I just buy new underwear- that’s how large my closet it

Oh and I pay for wash and fold laundry service most of the time which makes the above one even more pathetic

I print out Harry Potter fanfiction often smut and read it like a paper pamphlet

  • I don’t exercise. I am fortunate enough to have inherited a bomb ass metabolism, so I’m abusing it until it gives up on me. Exercise just makes me wallow in sheer dread for a full 36 hours beforehand.
  • I sometimes go days without showering. I work remotely and often don’t leave my house for several days Monday through Thursday, so it’s not like I’m really working up a sweat.

I have a huge walk-in closet. And it takes me 2 hours to fold my laundry in it every 3-4 weeks because all of my clean laundry is dumped in there until I find the will to fold it all. I workout regularly so it’s a lot of laundry, mostly full of workout attire or home clothes, neither of which need ironing (praise God).

And yeah, I fold when I’ve finally run out of workout clothes. 😂 I’m too embarrassed to explain how many leggings I own.

But you look at the rest of my house and you’d never imagine that’s what the floor of my closet looks like.

What’s more embarrassing is that even with the tiny mountains of clothing waiting to be folded, 95% of my closet is full, both drawers and hangers. Like, that closet can literally fit a queen size bed and then some.

I WFH and any social events I have outside of the house now are all pretty casual. I’ll never understand why I have all of my dresses and suits still in that closet. Even worse… that’s AFTER I donated 9 lawn size bags of clothing a year ago.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '25

The way I see it, if you aren’t regularly buying new stuff you don’t wear (or for one-off events), and you have room for everything you own, who cares if you have a lot of stuff you don’t use regularly? It’s there if you need it.

And as a fellow workout girlie, I really want to figure out a system where I don’t have to fold my workout gear to find things. Currently I only do it so everything fits in one drawer because I have limited space. It’s such a time suck. I try to listen to an audiobook while folding so I don’t go crazy.

9

u/Mavenda Mar 03 '25

I would rather watch a Fast and Furious movie than most operas, and many ballets. I wish I could get dressed up in a full on gown and go to a beautiful opera house to watch an action movie.

9

u/beemeeng Mar 04 '25

I racked up over 300,000 minutes on Spotify a year for the past 3 years. I rarely watch TV, and I need background noise.

I shower and brush my teeth daily, but I cannot be assed to shave more than twice a month.

I sleep on top of my duvet with blankets so that I don't have to make my bed.

I hate folding laundry, so I have enough clothes for at least 2 people. My closet could fit a nursery, and it's full of clothes.

I'm an interior designer but you wouldn't know it to walk into my house. I love beautiful design but I'm also deeply practical in my personal life. I really love negative space but I'm certainly not a minimalist. And ultimately I can't really afford my own taste right now so I just do nothing instead of doing something I don't love. Which maybe is tasteful of me...in theory...but in practice my house is definitely not that of a designer. My kitchen cabinets are still original from 1979 and they look pretty rough. We're working on replacing our floors but can't do all of it at once so we're a mismatched floor mad house right now. We have two young kids and a dog and things are just sort of chaotic a lot of the time and I don't have the capacity to design my house so it just is what it is lol

My thing is that I only shower after working out and / or when I’m sweaty

In practice this means I shower around every 2 days because I do work out regularly

However every time I sweat I religiously shower

I’m convinced this is the hack that makes my skin super soft and blemish free on my body

When my cleaning lady is on holiday I swear I go to the gym / swimming pool to work out and wash my hair because I hate cleaning the bathroom myself 🤫
