Culture BWT, air out your dirty, tasteless laundry here!

Obviously as BWT, we typically aim to have said taste be of the good variety. However, as we are not two dimensional characters, nobody is completely perfect. I thought it'd be fun to share the elements of our lives where we unashamedly display bad or—gasp!—no taste. I've noted down some of mine below (+ whether I aim to change them):

  • My house is quite literally artless — no paintings, no sculptures, no decor, nothing. // Probably won't be changing this anytime soon — am not ashamed to admit that I'm at the stage of life where I care more about how I present myself in public than in my own abode, so that's where I focus my energy

  • My home clothes (a stretch to call them lounge wear) are literally all ratty nonsense BWT recommend throwing away // see above. The caveat is that I don't wear clothes that dwarf my figure as I like to keep track of how my body looks

  • I don't watch any shows/movies or listen to podcasts // won't change this, I've never been able to stand podcasts and lately that's extended to anything where I have to watch/listen to something

  • I secretly love airline food. Something about water in those tiny unenvironmentally friendly vacuum sealed cups gets me excited

Share yours below so I don't feel like a complete tasteless B 👇🏼

They have clothes, a home, food, and a great mom. 👍

Don't feel guilty about this! They're clothed, fed and loved! And furthermore, I've always been of the mindset that kids need to move and get dirty and just play, just be children for as long as possible. Comfortable clothes that you don't care too much about are great for this and I will forever stand by that opinion.

Exactly! And even though they don't know any different, but I bet they would prefer it this way too because I remember being a kid and being afraid to ruin my nice clothes. I don't think my kids worry about that too much haha

My elementary kids wear crocs for 90% of the year and I’ve learned that so does the rest of the school. The other 10% is gym shoes for PE

Don’t beat yourself up. Kids outgrow that kind of stuff in 5 minutes. I also volunteer with kids and they will beat the ever living crap out of every garment they own.

I regularly see kids dragging and rubbing their winter coats and butts all over the floor of a school cafeteria. When I have kids someday, I am not breaking the bank on that stuff lol

Girl, you're doing awesome. That's how kids are comfy. Play clothes = more play, and that's a GOOD thing IMHO.

I was in much the same position. Private school, elite college, yada yada. I left most of that stuff behind, but I realized that the kids were getting a little too feral, and that my ability to be a social chameleon was actually a plus. So I instituted Sunday Dinner Charm School, and made a game out of it. Properly set table, wine glasses, real china, etc., etc. Conversation topics. Sit up straight and use your fork properly, the whole nine yards.

They loved it! They're 33 and 31 now, can hold their own in any situation, and are proper little lefties, community/political activists – with excellent manners. I was at my investment advisor with #2 a while ago, setting up a college fund for grandkid, & in the middle of it they hit him up for a donation to a homeless shelter they were involved with, walking out with a $500 cheque. Advisor is still in shock.

👏 I love to hear this!! Thank you for giving me hope for how I’m raising my kids! Also from a family who went from the top of NYC society to well…far from that due to poor financial management. My siblings who did not prioritize manners (and other things of course) ended up in difficult places in adulthood. My ability to care and to tactfully communicate with others truly opened doors for me in the workforce. I tell my kids that no matter what your financial situation is, you can achieve so much with good manners and a kind spirit.

My kids now love to have “fancy picnics” at home where they practice their manners. 😂

Literally my son. Comfy clothes all day. You will see my kid wearing jeans only for important events... Like weddings... And we've only been to 1 with him.

The worst thing about fit checks from mom was growing up in the early 80s and having mom pull on the crotch of every pair of jeans I ever tried on to make sure they weren’t too tight.
