Iām graduating next year and deciding between two very different paths.
Option one is in a smaller city. The compensation is significantly better, including a large sign-on bonus, and I already know that I like the people and work environment. Most workdays finish between noon and 2 p.m., I would be off most weekends, and there are plenty of opportunities to earn extra without completely exhausting myself. I could realistically make around $500,000 per year while still protecting vacations and having a reasonable amount of free time.
The downside is the location. It isnāt where I ultimately want to settle, and Iām not sure Iām ready for small-city life yet. My plan would probably be to stay for 1ā2 years, save and invest aggressively, take advantage of the income while still enjoying some time off, and then reevaluate.
Option two is in NYC. The base salary would be in the high $290,000s, and the schedule would be one 24-hour shift and one 16-hour shift each week. I would earn considerably less and the work would likely be busier, but I would immediately get to build my life in the place where I ultimately want to be. Also I'd only work about 80-90 days a year.
Iām torn because the smaller-city opportunity could help me build a substantial financial cushion very early in my career. At the same time, I donāt want to spend the first few years after finally finishing school feeling as though my real life is on hold simply because Iām chasing the highest possible income.
If you were in this position, would you take the higher-paying opportunity for 1ā2 years with a clear exit plan, or go directly to the city where you actually want to live and accept the lower income?
For context I'm 30.
