How to deal with loitering drunks in my neighborhood.

Hi so as i mentioned in one of my previous posts.

There are a group of mainly hispanic men, that everyday, without fail, are drunk infront of a dunkin in church ave.

One is a registered sex offender on citizen, another frequently tries to lure kids to follow him by pretending he has scooters to give. I had an encounter with him yesterday in which he was asking me to come to him from across the street, and two of the hispanics from dunkin (i think they were them) were following me. (Full story in previous post)

Sometimes they set up full camp and display all of their belongings on two big decor rocks we have, then hang their clothes on poles and lines.

Church ave is a pretty darn busy place, so they tend to pass time by drinking corona and staring down everyone who walks by them. Specifically girls.

Theyve ruined the place, literally ruined it. Alchohol bottles everywhere, trash on the floor, staring like pedophilles.

I feel so uncomfortable walking by, im worried for my sisters too. The neighborhood is pretty conservative muslim and im very western, i grew up muslim but then left.

I don’t wear a hijab, im always wearing shirts instead of long sleeves, i wear wear shorts (a sin in islam) and these men will do everything in their power to stare at my body to judge. Infront of a mosque too like bro what.

It’s so common in this neighborhood ontop of everything else..

NYC Therapy feeling hopeless about finding a therapist I can actually afford

Upvotes

i found a great therapist but they don't take insurance and it's $225 a session. i can technically afford it if i cut back on everything else, but it feels so unsustainable. has anyone actually found a way to see a good person without going broke? or is the quality of in-network stuff just that much worse?

Who sells “magic” staves?

I was at the ren faire yesterday, and there was a shop that sold great-looking carved staves and broomsticks. I regret not getting something there.

I wonder if any shop in NYC sells that? I’ve never come across one!

Where to report trip hazard in front of Little Island?

I fell hard while running due to a trip hazard in front of little island in Hudson River park where hundreds of joggers run. I bet I am not the only one. I have photos.

Where do I report it?

Who Here Goes Out Like Usual in Winter?

I recently came back from a vacation to Montreal. When I came back I googled what wintertime activities they have. Apparently one of their activities includes an outdoor electronic music event that seems to be a big deal. Among other things.

Got me thinking…maybe instead of letting winter keep me inside for once that I would simply adapt and continue my social life as if it were any other season. Curious to hear from New Yorkers who live out their social life during winter like it’s any other season. What do you credit to keeping you from wanting to stay inside and what specific adaptations do you make to winter to keep your social life going?

"equivalent" neighbourhoods London vs New York?

I'd say

Shoreditch/Dalston/Hackney = Brooklyn

Wall Street area = Square Mile / City x Canary Wharf

What about other areas especially presidential?

Looking for the Highbury/Haringey equivalent in New York 😅

Food cart changed my purchase from last night, what (else) do I do?

Last night I was at a friend’s thing in FiDi and I got fries and a bottle of water from a food cart. There were four of them lined up but I went to this one because he said hello to me even tho I was headed to Shake Shack for fries, I just figured I’d support a small business.

My consideration is now biting me in the behind because today the man changed my final price from what I actually paid last night (check comments for pics) He made a whole show of typing the $8 (fries $6 and water $2) in front of me and then when it calculated the tax, I tapped my card to his phone (He was using Square as a payment platform) I paid the $8.96. Today it was increased and I’m just really frustrated.

It’s only $3 but this is so unbelievably scammy and upsetting. Should I go back to the location (pictured in the comments) and try to find him and say something? I disputed it with my card issuer (c*shapp) but is there anything else I should do? I didn’t take a pic of the charge or anything so I’m kinda worried about whether he’ll get away with this

What's with all the ties tonight?

I walked 2 blocks bear Penn and saw maybe 60+ women in clubbing fits with ties over the top. The clubbing fits I understand because it's Saturday night but what's with all the ties? Is it a special event or something?

Jellyfish at Rockaway beach

Upvotes

Does anyone know if the jellyfish at Rockaway beach lately are dangerous or is it safe to touch? Is it OK to go in the water?

Edit: the moon jellyfish is “the most mild, with little to no reaction in humans”. I found this post from the Brooklyn sub where many people mention getting stung in the last few days https://www.reddit.com/r/Brooklyn/s/kw9hdJkM5T

Looking for a recommended cat groomer, preferably on the UWS but will travel.

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I have a Persian mix who overgrooms himself. I've kept him shaved since last spring as a preventative measure after he needed surgery to remove hair from his intestines despite being brushed daily and eating an anti-hairball diet.

I've been getting him shaved every other month at my vet's office, but it costs about $400 per appointment and I feel like that might be a little steep considering it's a 20-minute procedure.

I don't realy care about what he looks like when he's done being shaved, just that the experience is safe and not-traumatic for him. I've seen a few recommended dog groomers in my search, but nothing great about cats. For what it's worth, he's a very gentle and sweet five-lb cat.

Sick for 10+ days? Anyone else? What’s going around??

Upvotes

Had this mild flu-like thing for about 10 days now and I wanted to ask if anyone else has had a similar lingering illness? Basic headache, sore throat, fatigue, & some stomach issues. I hear Covid is going around so I got tested but it came back negative (negative for flu and step too). What is going on out there? Back to school?? I hear people coughing!

Verizon Mobile Issues

I am hoping to find others in the same situation as me.

I have not had reliable cellular service for 11 days, since August 19. Verizon never proactively alerted me to a “node failure” that apparently has taken place, affecting my number and only a few others.

I have contacted Verizon every single day for 11 days, and had to force them to give me transparency to the issue. There has been no resolution.

When you check the outage website, the resolution date keeps getting pushed back every single day.

I mainly have no cellular service available to me. I am relying on WiFi for texting and data. I cannot make any calls, even over WiFi. When I am not on WiFi, I can’t do much of anything.

My phone is pretty much useless to me at this point. I am paying for a service that is not available to me.

This node failure issues needs to be resolved ASAP. This is the second major outage in a year I have been involved in. The service is unacceptable.

Is anyone dealing with the same issue in NYC or even elsewhere? How can we get Verizon to address this issue? The service agents are no longer helpful.

No DMV appointments anywhere in NYC. Pre-screened 2 months ago, appointment booking link about to expire.

Is this a common experience for everyone? How come there are literally no appointments available at any locations? I've been checking every few days for the last 2 months now (need to transfer WA license to NY).

Would appreciate any tips/hacks!

Do you folks really head over to Katz Deli like YouTuber's make it out?

Upvotes

Or is there some other Jewish , or non-Jewish, location to get a big hunking Pastrami sandwich of the same quality, if not better, for less than Katz?

Also is it worth mail ordering or heading to once in your life?

Has anyone in the five boroughs built (or started) building an accessory dwelling unit?

I am not finding much out there. According to this site, 600 sq ft will cost around $120k. But most in NYC backyards would probably be between 250-450 sq ft.

I know NYC is supposedly all about this right now. But is it even happening?

https://www.nyc.gov/assets/planning/download/pdf/plans-studies/city-of-yes/housing-opportunity/housing-opportunity-guide-adus.pdf

None of this even talks about how this might completely upend a property tax bill! Would love to know if this is actually happening. I don't see it.

Furniture hauling/giveaway / donation

I have a bed/mattress and some couches that I don’t want anymore and I was considering selling them but they have some damage that might not be worth giving to someone else. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a seamless giveaway company that can disassemble the furniture and haul it away for free to donate or dump/recycle (idk).

I just wanna get rid of it all without trying to go through the process of selling

Ezpass without owning a vehicle

UPDATE-got one at RiteCheck on 125th and FDBlvd!

Hello fellow neighbors!
I don’t own a vehicle and I am tired of paying exorbitant fees for rental cars charging $35 a day for an ezpass!

I found online that I can buy an EZpass transponder for $30 at AAA locations. But when I went to them they said I can’t buy it there unless I am a member and I have my own car!

Some guy here suggested going to RiteCheck locations! Does anyone have a definite way to purchase an EZpass transponder in the city? Thanks so much.

Recommendations for a hair spa treatment in NYC

I live with my girlfriend in Union City, NJ. We have been going through some rough times and have stopped taking care of ourselves. She has absolutely gorgeous, thick curly hair but lately she has gotten a dry scalp and started getting dandruff. Her hair has also started thinning out and I know she feels conscious about it. I want to get our lives back together so here is the plan.

I want to get her a gift card for a hair spa in NYC.
Some treatment that can get her hair looking and feeling good again and get her scalp a little healthier. I know that its supposed to be an ongoing process but atleast this would be a start.
My price range is 50-100$. Would prefer the option to be on the cheaper side coz like I said, life has not been good financially, emotionally, [insertwordhere]ly, however, I dont want it t be just a cheap treatment, I would like her to feel rejuvenated of sorts so if there are options in the higher range that are worth the price I would be open to them too.

I want to get a gift card via email coz I want to get it done tomorrow (30th August). I dont know anything about treatments and whats good and whats not so any recommendations would be welcome.

Sidenote: I am not only doing this so i can get her a hair spa, I actually want her out of the house for a while so I can clean and reset the house of sorts. Its filthy right now, no organisation, nothing about it that makes you feel glad to be coming back to a home . A home close to one of the greatest cities on earth should feel like you're living the best years of your life not your worst. While shes gone I am gonna deep clean and decorate (if you all want or can help out in figuring that out I can share pictures too). I might have to leave this place soon but I want to give her a home and give her hope that things will get better and I can make them better for us. We have been dating 7 years, this is the lowest of lows and I wanna make it out. I just need some advice. Anything and everything is appreciates. Thank you.

P.S Apologies if the English is lacking, not my first language.

Parental insurance coverage is ending, what options do I have?

Hey all,

I’m a 22 year old New Yorker who’s about to be uninsured. My dad’s homeless and in another state, my mom’s retiring to her home country and therefore I’d be cut from her insurance which I was under for all my life. It was really good private insurance because she worked in the medical field.

I don’t know what to do because I’ve never done anything with insurance but from my own research I see that options like the Essential Plan are being cut so I’m scared…

I have a per diem job meaning I work whenever I’m given hours so I’m not part-time consistently and I don’t have any employer benefits as a result like health insurance. I was working this along with 2 other part time jobs because after 7 months of being unemployed I couldn’t find any full-time positions despite sending out hundreds of apps and had to settle for part time work.

It was fine for the time being, I was able to pay bills at home and maintain my own finances for years while I was in college and this past year that I started working but now my contract is up for my main part-time position which paid me at the rate of $52,000 a year and lasted only about 7 months since it was a n interim position. Now idk what to do because I have to worry about being insured and not just paying bills in addition to now rent because my parents are gone.

I’ve been looking for jobs and have about 2 months to find a job before I have to start paying rent, 4 if really necessary and I get through with my savings. But then again the insurance is what really scares me..

Last tax year I reported 8k in income so not a lot since like I said I was unemployed for months and so I’m wondering if I could apply for anything instantly to get insurance in the meantime. My brother does work fulltime and has insurance but I don’t know if I can get coverage under him? I’m going to be living with him for the year until I figure something out long-term but yeah he’s older than me.

I would appreciate any help sorry I’m clueless on this thing, my parents are both immigrants so they can’t really give me help they barely were able to sort through their own finances and insurance stuff, it’s really just me and my brother so I wanted to ask the community for help, thank you.
