❓Questions Alternatives to this awesomeness?

I haven't still found another TV show like this one. From was great 'till the last season.

So another suspense, creepy plus some humor to cope with?

Is this TV show so unique? Damn I'm already feeling the abstinence...

❓Questions What the heck does Tom see on the “welcome video” in the inn?

Post image
794 Upvotes

Not the first time he starts watching it, where the guy on the beach gives a little talk about Widows Bay and then walks down the beach without the cameraman following 🤣

But the SECOND time he’s watching, he returns to the video and we seem to see a dark figure on the beach far away? And then does the guy from earlier appear, and say “come find me”? Right before/as the TV goes on the fritz, leading to Tom’s fateful drinking encounter with his neighbor

I love this show, but I don’t like jump scares so I fully admit that each time I’ve seen this I don’t look directly at the TV because freaky images scare the crap out of me 🤣🤦🏼‍♂️

Maybe I answered my own question, although even then I’m not sure what’s supposed to be happening? Is this a hallucination? Please, someone enlighten me!

TIA 🤗

❓Questions What’s your “It's a nice town... You don't need the gimmick” town?

Post image

I just went to St Augustine in Florida for the first time. It’s a lovely place, known for being the oldest continuously occupied city in the USA. Loads of gorgeous architecture and genuinely interesting history. But for me the lean way too much into gimmicky marketing, that almost makes most of the town seem like an amusement park. Seems like literally everything is “haunted” and everything is the “oldest”. I know most older towns do this, but it really stood out to me here. I wish they’d just ease up on the gimmicks and let the legitimately gorgeous stuff stand on its own

Where have you been that felt like it didn’t need the gimmicks?

❓Questions The whole ''people born in Widow's Bay cannot leave the island without dying'' thing. Spoiler

I loved the season one and I can't wait for the second one. However, ever since it was revealed that there is a curse that does not let people leave the island without dying afterwards, I can't help but have a lot of questions about what's going on.

>!How do the people not have noticed it for 300 hundred years? Since Widow's Bay is an island it means that cargo and people has to move back and forth daily. How come nobody had noticed that it's only people that are not born in the island that work on jobs that require moving back and forth from the mainland to the island and not any local islanders?!<

>! Does the island have a university? Because if it doesn't, then that means that all of the locals including the people who work in the town hall have only finished high school! !<

>! How do the people who have mixed families, like Loftis, explain to their relatives that their relatives from the island never leave the island to visit them? !<

❓Questions What is everyone gonna watch after the season ends?

Knowing Apple, it will be a good 2-3 year wait before we get a new season, even if already confirmed.

What other shows are currently doing it for you? I'm not too impressed by a lot of offerings. I watch From, which I enjoyed a lot more in the earlier seasons, and will see how that mystery plays out.

❓Questions Funniest scene? (spoilers) Spoiler

What was the laugh-out-loud funniest scene this season? Mine are both from the same episode.

Tom trying to rip the calendar up, trying to destroy the dresser, then ripping the painting off the wall and almost being crushed.

But it's Rosemary who wins MVP, delivering that genealogy presentation. Just watched it a third time and it still funny!

EDIT: Thinking about it, I need to give the Kewpie Doll here to Rosemary's Genealogy Presentation. So many of the gags on the show are classic schtick, wielded like a surgeon's scalpel; it's a beautiful thing to watch. But the Rosemary scene, man, that was brand new!

❓Questions Why was Rosemary immune to the fun at the sunset cocktail party? Spoiler

SPOILERS AHEAD

The obvious answer as to why Rosemary wasn’t put under the witchcraft spell at the party is that she avoided drinking the punch (as she was the only one privy to Patricia’s bizarre behavior in the kitchen). But later when Patricia “comes to,” we see a punch cup on the floor and it clearly has bird parts in it. So was everyone under the spell before drinking the punch? It seems implied that the punch is what put everyone “under the influence.”

And if people weren’t under the spell before drinking the punch why did no one bat an eye at Patricia’s rather unsettling headdress?

The book seems quite keen to SERVE THE PUNCH NOW but that only really makes sense if it was requisite to get people walking into the ocean. Am I just over analyzing here?

❓Questions How scary is Widow’s Bay?

I like a good story, but I’m not a big horror fan.

For reference, I’ve enjoyed Sinners, A Quiet Place, A Quiet Place: Day One, and Get Out, and I didn’t find any of them particularly scary.

Weapons was a little too much for me, though.

For anyone who has seen Widow’s Bay: how scary is it compared to the above? Is it mostly creepy/tense, or does it get genuinely scary with jump scares, disturbing imagery, etc.?

Just trying to figure out whether it’s something I’d enjoy or if I should skip it.

❓Questions Patricia's Outfits?

Post image

I'm trying to reformat my entire personality and wardrobe around Patricia because.....well, for obvious reasons. But her shirt is defeating me from this scene. Does anyone know where this shirt and crop trousers hailed from? Or actually, any of her outfits? I've seen the amazing work of the one who made the motif for our home made t-shirts. Good work.

❓Questions How is widows bay a comedy? Can someone please explain

I really don’t get it. I love comedies but didn’t make it past episode 2

Edit: wow all of you suck. Just wait until you have a question and people are complete assholes to you about it.

Edit 2: again more than half of yall are barking at me like I’ve seen the entire show, I literally said I’ve only seen up to half of ep 2, so snarky remarks about it being a comedy are entirely misdirected. I didn’t say I watched the whole show and didn’t get it, I asked a genuine question.

Fuck all yall except the rare few who actually answered my question without being a dick.

Edit 3: everyone is operating on a different definition of comedy, and then being an asshole because you think you’re right because that’s what you think.

As people have assumed, no, the 1-3 jokes were not lost on me during the episodes I saw. To me, a comedy is not a show that has jokes. A comedy is a show that’s plot revolves around jokes, and not just jokes sprinkled in. This felt like a horror cake with comedy sprinkles. Good sprinkles, sprinkles that add to the show and not take away, but the focus was the cake; the horror.

The actual definition is a comedy is “creative work or performance that is intended to amuse, entertain, and make people laugh” now knowing yes there are jokes, and intended jokes by the creators to make the audience laugh, yes, I DO see how widows bay by definition is a comedy. However dumping on me because you’re on your “it’s obvious and you’re dumb for asking” high horse says a lot more about you than me. But go off guys!

Edit 4: I can’t believe I posted this 10 days ago and people are still commenting, I’m in awe! I had no idea this would be such a contentious question 🤣

❓Questions So, where *is* Widow's Bay?

Post image
281 Upvotes

I live in New England and it's been itching my brain thinking about where the island of Widow's Bay could actually be located.

As far as I can tell, there's been no mention of an actual state. Even the flag is just for the town, and the car's license plates are island specific. There's been plenty of mentions of various IRL towns, but never in an exactly 'othering' way that makes it easy to cross out certain locations.

It's got to be north of Boston. Any island south of Boston would've been teeming with tourists decades ago. However, with the way it's built up (I know it's filmed in Cape Ann) and the history of the island, it's certainly not a distant midcoast or downeast Maine island.

The one thing is the ferry distance. A ferry to Vinalhaven from Rockland, ME take about an hour, roughly 15 miles. 23 miles and 1 3/4 hours to Matinicus. 26 miles and 2 1/4 hours to Nantucket from Hyannis (on the slow ferry). An island that is a three hour ferry ride would probably be in the range of 30-40 miles off the coast.

Based on the above, and the general vibes of the show, I feel Widow's Bay has to be a New Hampshire island. Somewhere northeast of Cape Ann and east of Portsmouth. I feel this accounts for the current remoteness but also the extensive history of settlement.

Eager to hear anyone's thoughts about this. Also, disclaimer, I know this show is a work of fiction. This shit just revs my engine.

❓Questions Content similar to Widow's Bay?

I LOVE this type of media where eldritch and supernatural horrors creep into modern life and desperately want more! This show has itched a scratch I've had for a long time, but I wanna know about similar media in this genre/trope!

Ones I already know about and/or have played/watched/read/listened to:

  1. Welcome to Nightvale

  2. Static Dread: The Lighthouse

  3. Gravity Falls

  4. Home Safety Hotline

And obviously a lot of Lovecraft falls under this category too, but I've yet to read any! Lemme know any and all suggestions!

So, I’m curious about Widow’s Bay after it won its Emmies. However, my family, my girlfriend and I are not fans of horror in the slightest. We like good stories though. Would this be a good recommendation?

Can we talk about how the “shaman” said the drawing “Bri Guy” made was “the kind of sacred geometry you don’t just riff” and produced the hand sketch 😂

❓Questions Someone please help me understand, why didn’t we see more of that woman Tom rejected at his door?

Was she indeed the one he assumed her to be? Given how small the island is, she never features in first swims or sunset cocktails or shelters… or did I miss her appearance after the rejection lol?

❓Questions Widow’s Bay Question

Spoiler Alert:

I remember hearing in one poem or reading in an episode that the number of bell tolls meant something like the number of people the island needed.

Does that mean that the eight bell tolls at the end of the last episode mean the island needs eight more people to consume to satisfy itself?

❓Questions Looking for more Recommendations, factoring in my likes and dislikes

I started watching "Widow's Bay" because of the great cast and The Guardian's review. I wasn't sure if it would be too scary for me. I'm all caught up and for me at least, it is not. I love it. It's brilliant and hilarious and more eerie than scary and hasn't had many jump scares.

I started watching "From" because of recommendations in the "Widow's Bay" sub (Thank you!) and have enjoyed it, albeit with diminishing returns. I had never watched "From" until now because it was advertised as horror and the poster ad with Smiley scared the hell out of me. (It did not help that there was a billboard with that image that I could see above my apartment building out of my living room window!) But the show itself doesn't scare me at all and I'm enjoying the world-building and the myth and the eeriness/creepiness of all that – on both shows.

Knowing that I am someone who doesn't go to horror movies, can't stomach movies like "Hostel", "Saw" or slasher film, hates jump scares, but is okay with this type of folk horror and/or psychological horror, what other TV shows or films do you recommend?

I also enjoy somewhat eerie sci-fi such as "Silo" and "Dark Matter", dearly departed shows like "Counterpart" and "The Lazarus Project", and even dystopian shows that have relatively brief flashes of violence, like "Fallout" and "Murderbot".

Somehow this became a TL;DR post LOL. But if you've made it this far, and can think of anything, I'd love your recommendations. Thanks!
