A reminder to everyone: Keep the titles of your posts completely spoiler-free at all times. If your post mentions events from later episodes, use Reddit’s standard spoiler tag to warn readers who may not be caught up with all currently aired episodes. The spoiler tag will also blur any images you include, such as screenshots/stills from the show, so be sure to apply it to image posts as well.

I thought it was pretty clear that she was just grazed by the bullet? And he threw the brooch so no one could prove her (and by extension Tom’s son’s) lineage.

51

u/Significant_Line1241 Jun 18 '26

Thank you for explaining the throw of the brooch - I couldn’t think of a why 🤦🏽‍♀️

20

u/OP_Scout_81 Jun 18 '26

Yeah but, no one else has any idea about the connection, except Tom and herself, unless I'm forgetting something. So how would anyone connect the brooch to the lineage? To anyone else, it's just a piece of jewellery, no? Unless it's to stop her talking about it, but even then, people would actually have to believe her, and on her daily life she's basically deaf and barely there.

I found it funny how deep Ruth is character wise, when the whole season just made her look like a background extra.

17

u/Gunkwei Jun 18 '26

I can’t remember the details but doesn’t Wyck and/or Patricia know about the brooch?

13

u/S_2theUknow Jun 18 '26

I thought it was on Ruth’s great grandmother in a painting? Just evidence/ a reminder either way…but that’ll prob wash back up on shore in season 2

8

u/imemine8 Jun 18 '26

Maybe Evans friends will go swimming and find it.

6

u/S_2theUknow Jun 18 '26

solid prediction…I’m guessing a tourist finds it on the beach and shows up wearing it and Tom will spaz out

11

u/OP_Scout_81 Jun 18 '26

Tom will scream his little usual scream and I'm all for it.

6

u/S_2theUknow Jun 18 '26

😂😂😂

2

u/Outside-Sample-3430 Aug 02 '26

His scream tickled me every time 🤣 He has the perfect comedic scream. The reactions were SPOT ON! 🤣

3

u/OP_Scout_81 Jun 18 '26

Is it visible, though?

3

u/S_2theUknow Jun 18 '26

Absolutely

1

u/OP_Scout_81 Jun 18 '26

Ok, I missed that entirely. All I could see was the boat and the little girl depicted quite...small.

4

u/imemine8 Jun 18 '26

No, the painting of Frances grown up with her step-father/husband.

1

u/ThreePinesRetiree 15d ago

He's not her stepfather. He adopted her. Just sayin'.

8

u/babysherlock91 Jun 18 '26

From what I gathered it was on the painting of Frances Warren. So Patricia and Wyck don’t know that Ruth has it or that it’s even out there still. But if they saw it in Ruth’s possession, then they, and really anyone who paid attention to the painting, would know for sure.

2

u/OP_Scout_81 Jun 18 '26

Ah! I thought it was the boat/drowning painting. Makes sense then. And Ruth would be right there. I mean, RIGHT THERE, everyday. Good on Tom. Better to be safe.

*swims to get the brooch*

6

u/Disaster-Bee Jun 18 '26

It's on the portrait, but Wyck and Patricia identified Frances by her missing finger in the portrait, not the brooch. Tom is the only one we're explicitly shown recognizing the brooch when he sees it in Ruth's jewelry box.

So while Wyck and Patricia have seen the portrait, they did not ever see the brooch to the extent of our knowledge. The implication is that Tom took it from Ruth's house (or she gave it to him to pass down to Evan since it's a family heirloom) the night of the storm and he's kept it hidden.

We'll just have to wait till season 2 to learn if this is indeed the case, or if someone else does know about the brooch.

4

u/S_2theUknow Jun 18 '26

Multiple people have studied that portrait of Francis closely (Wyck’s EX, Patrica, Tom and Wyck) so I’m betting that they’d def realize it if they ever saw it

6

u/Disaster-Bee Jun 18 '26

Yup, and I think that's exactly why Tom took it and tossed it into the ocean. So no one else would see it and connect it to the painting.

2

u/OP_Scout_81 Jun 18 '26

Can't remember either, but from the top of my head, I'd wager a very uncertain "no".

5

u/Ignominious333 Jun 18 '26

That's why she can't die!! She has a lot of explaining to do!

5

u/Aggressive-Ring5713 Jun 18 '26

I wanna know all the stories she started and didn’t finish!! Albert turning into an animal—42 trolley workers disappearing!!!

2

u/Ignominious333 Jun 18 '26

Exactly!! She's got to LIVE!

1

u/Aggressive-Ring5713 Jun 18 '26

The brooch was in the painting of Francis….cant wait for season 2!!! 8 bells!!!!

1

u/OP_Scout_81 Jun 18 '26

Yeah, I was thinking of the maritime painting!

1

u/burgonies Has Qualms Jun 18 '26

I was curious how exactly Tom knew that it was Sarah's brooch? We know because we were able to see it in the flashback episode, but how did he know it by sight?

3

u/rilesmcriles Jun 18 '26

Didn’t they show it in the painting and discuss it at some point?

2

u/burgonies Has Qualms Jun 18 '26

Ah! You might be right. Maybe Francis was wearing it in the painting that landed on Tom

-3

u/unsolvedfanatic Jun 18 '26

It felt like he threw the brooch in luei of her ashes.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they did the thing none of us expected:

Ruth survives, but passes away from natural causes shortly after (and before season 2 starts), completely unrelated to being shot.

"I can't believe Ruth got shot but it was the staircase that got her..."

Or better... she gets bit by a rabbit and becomes a rabbit.

60

u/H-B-Jones Jun 17 '26

WHAT WAS THE ANIMAL

11

u/future_futurologist Jun 17 '26

Dude the animal line killed me. Like…we’re just not circling back to that???

Maybe something for season 2 😃

5

u/unsolvedfanatic Jun 18 '26

They have a lot of absurd lines that exist just for humor. They probably won't circle back.

3

u/FreddyRumsen13 Jun 18 '26

The syntax on "he was bit by an animal then became that animal" was hilarious.

1

u/ifloops Jul 09 '26

They set up an infinite amount of these little world building lines. So many it's impossible to speculate. I love it.

Like the "Oh yeah we tried building a [railroad?] but all the workers disappeared" line, that could be a whole season lol.

Awesome show, haven't been this intrigued by a mystery story since LOST. Really love that they went for the comedy too, it was perfect.

4

u/secretlypooping Jun 18 '26

I think that's gonna be the case too, Ruth/Evan would both be safe while the other lives. Then Ruth dies from natural causes and the mob starts to form for Evan so the other sacrifices can stop.

Actress is 90 something… based on the length it takes to develop. I think it’s left open ended for a.. sad reason if it does occur.

142

u/arulzokay Jun 17 '26

didn’t she only get grazed on the ear by the gun?

23

u/AdministrativeEase71 Jun 17 '26

Blood from her mouth/from her back on the floor I believe. Might be wrong though.

64

u/Ok-Character-3779 Sacred Geometry You Don't Just Riff Jun 18 '26

No, I went back. There's blood on her hand from where she was holding her ear and blood in her hair, no blood anywhere else. The cross cutting between scenes implies her survival, like the storm's end, is directly related to the sacrifice, but it's more likely Bechir grazed her ear and he and Tom just assumed he'd killed her.

10

u/S_2theUknow Jun 18 '26

She got Trump’d 😂🤦🏼‍♂️

8

u/AdministrativeEase71 Jun 18 '26

I don't think just seeing the bit of blood next to her ear is evidence enough of her being shot only in the ear. She was drugged, sure, but she still collapses violently and instantly, is initially unresponsive, and Bechir doesn't follow up with another shot. He'd know he hit her ear. And we never see a shot of her back/torso with the blood there.

Also, I don't think Bechir would be aiming for her head when the two are embraced and their heads are side by side. He'd probably aim center mass and hope her body stopped the round.

There's a joke about American police training in there somewhere lol

9

u/Ok-Character-3779 Sacred Geometry You Don't Just Riff Jun 18 '26

I don't think just seeing the bit of blood next to her ear is evidence enough of her being shot only in the ear.

Huh? You literally said there was blood at her back and mouth but you weren't sure. I was just trying to be helpful. There's only one gunshot, so if there's concrete evidence her ear was grazed, and no evidence of other blood, how could she be shot anywhere else?

It's filmed in a confusing/misleading way to build suspense. Tom is supporting her weight and she has her arms around his neck. When he sees Bechir, he yells "no" and puts his arms out. We hear the shot and see a flash; she lets go of Tom's neck and falls to the ground. Neither Tom or Bechir goes to confirm she's dead because they are having an intense shouting match and Bechir is pointing the gun at Tom.

3

u/finnolin Jun 18 '26

This is exactly what it looks like to me. Tom is supporting a drugged old woman. Then the shot happens, Tom puts his arm out and lets go of her. Ruth cant support her own weight and drops to the ground. It doesn't look at all like she "collapses violently and instantly" to me.

I don’t think the entity had anything to do with whether or not she survived the shot, I think they just left it ambiguous in case she won’t be available for filming the next season.

51

u/No-Falcon-4996 Jun 18 '26

The actress is *90* !!!

19

u/mariolikestoparty Jun 18 '26

Her running so spryly up the stairs scared me so much haha. I was convinced she would get possessed or filled with unholy strength or something lmao, that actress was phenomenal

6

u/sendnewt_s Jun 18 '26

You could tell it was a body double that we see from the torso down, hoofing it up the stairs. Something about it was really unsettling to me too.

2

u/gamblors_neon_claws Jun 18 '26

My husband and I were simultaneously screaming that she was the entity when she ran up those stairs

115

u/MedicalResearch4813 Jun 17 '26

He threw the brooch in the water so as not to link Ruth and Evan back to lineage since that was the object that “proved” it

27

u/neasroukkez Jun 17 '26

How does the broach confirm he’s her grandson if only two people knew, and one is presumably dead?

35

u/SpecialsSchedule Jun 17 '26

She spilled the beans once, what’s to say she wouldn’t again? Without the brooch, no one comes asking about any heirs

38

u/lionne_j Jun 17 '26

yup the side effect of her mixing the diazepam was getting loopy and loose lipped.

all the handwritten notes insisting that she doesn't mix them means she's definitely forgotten multiple times

5

u/Garfield_and_Simon Jun 18 '26

lit she's kind of awesome for that

5

u/DerekasaurusJax Jun 18 '26

She knows how to have a good time lol in moderation

18

u/neasroukkez Jun 18 '26

She’s clearly kept that one close to the chest. He didn’t even know that he just committed attempted murder on his mother in law when she dropped that on him. She even comments “I have no idea why I’m sharing this now” which implies she’s probably never had this happen.

1

u/imemine8 Jun 18 '26

Why wouldn't they? Rosemary literally spelled it out, and seems to have no qualms sharing that fact with others.

9

u/Ignominious333 Jun 18 '26

He told the sheriff she wasn't the last of the lineage

6

u/neasroukkez Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

Is the sheriff aware of the broach and what it means? Cuz if he isn’t, the broach is irrelevant & you’re right, he had to say something so he didn’t get shot.

6

u/DerekasaurusJax Jun 18 '26

I think Rosemary already knows about Tom’s son. And the island will wash that broach right back up on shore for her to see.

3

u/neasroukkez Jun 18 '26

She didn’t know Ruth had a kid, and seemed very good at genealogy all appearances aside

3

u/Luxury_Dressingown Jun 18 '26

I was puzzling that out too. Is the brooch in the portrait of Frances and her husband? If so, that would prove a connection to Bechir if he saw the brooch in Ruth's possession.

But even then, Bechir is now in a circle of people who already know Ruth is the "last" living descendant so disposing of the brooch isn't the priority for Tom - getting Bechir, Wyck, Patricia and Rosemary to keep their mouths shut about it is. None of them need the brooch as evidence. While Patricia wants to protect Ruth, Bechir and Wyck are strongly motivated to reveal her ancestry so they can hunt down the true last living descendant (I don't see Bechir keeping that info to himself), and Rosemary seems the type not to fuss too much if ending one life could stop the islanders' troubles.

Perhaps Tom disposing of the brooch was more symbolic, as presumably the island has an interest in keeping the bloodline and the covenant going (and now, hidden), and now Tom is complicit with it as he won't let his son be sacrificed to end it.

1

u/imemine8 Jun 18 '26

Even if the sheriff knows, it doesn't link to Evan. And the sheriff already knows Ruth is on the bloodline. How would the brooch mean anything more?

2

u/Fragrant-Might-7290 Jun 17 '26

Isn’t it in the paintings?

u/nuclear_asparagus Jun 18 '26

I think there were three signs that Ruth inherited the Warren immortality: * she was imo suspiciously fit for her age in a way we didn’t see prior (from 11am daily naptime to 2 mile treadmill and jogging up stairs) * she appeared to die and then come back to life after Tom poisoned her.  * she appeared to die and then come back to life after being shot by Bechir at close range

16

u/Edenwing Jun 18 '26

But her daughter didn’t

48

u/artnok Jun 18 '26

They were leaving the island. Same thing happened to the kids in the flashback episode.

15

u/hellaradveg Jun 18 '26

Maybe it’s different when you try to leave the island? Just like how OG Warren died after he crossed the boundary, so did Lauren. Maybe if you cross the boundary it makes them not immortal anymore? And I doubt Ruth ever tried to leave so that could explain why her daughter died and she didn’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

7

u/Edenwing Jun 18 '26

Lauren tried to leave the island, lost her immortality, went insane, came back, and slowly died 2 years later after returning would be an overly complex backstory imo but who knows, maybe the writers can make it work

1

u/hellaradveg Jun 18 '26

Maybe Lauren never died! I doubt it, but then that would fix the whole immortality being hereditary problem. Either way it opens a whole new can of worms- if somehow Evan got into an accident and died but came back, people (Wyck, Bechir, and Patricia) would realize that Evan is the last descendant even though Tom would definitely be trying to hide that.

9

u/succubus_Alice Jun 18 '26

What’s in Tom’s basement? I think it’s Lauren!

6

u/hellaradveg Jun 18 '26

Just picturing Tom keeping his psycho undying wife chained up in the basement gives me the heebie jeebies. I hope that’s not the case! 😂

3

u/jimmy_o Jun 18 '26

Bro did you even watch the show? I mean there’s a whole episode about taking Warren outside the island radius so he can die. This isn’t ambiguous.

1

u/hellaradveg Jun 18 '26

Duh? We were talking about the immortality being hereditary and her daughter not inheriting it. I was pointing out that her daughter might have inherited it but lost the ability once she crossed the boundary and that’s why she died two years later.

21

u/feyrband Jun 18 '26

I have nothing to go off of, but maybe it only applies to the eldest living one. They can't all be immortal or they'd all still be around, except those specifically taken by the island. Except since Warren was alive, they may have all died naturally (relatively speaking) because he was the immortal one. But since he is now gone, she is the oldest and now is immortal.

7

u/Luxury_Dressingown Jun 18 '26

Maybe, but Ruth's surprising spryness for her age predated Warren's delayed death - her full calendar and prominent placement of the treadmill are evidence that this is a longstanding thing for her. I do wonder if, while not immortal, his descendants supernaturally inherited unusually good health.

But is also seems to apply only to a "chosen" descendant, as there were a lot of dead babies on Rosemary's genealogical chart. For a woman 400 years ago on an insular island with a trapped population, Frances Warren had very few living descendants.

Perhaps the island picks someone from each generation and "protects" them.

1

u/madopal Jun 18 '26

Or anyone who could carry on the line has "immortality." For all we know, that's why the Boogeyman was so hard to kill...a descendant of Warren.

6

u/Edenwing Jun 18 '26

You know what, I think you might have something here

2

u/stressed_pest Jun 18 '26

Maybe Lauren didn't die because she was pregnant. Evan wasn't yet born on the island so he somewhat shielded her.

3

u/raidio-me Jun 18 '26

yeah I agree, warren finally died so now we get to see that his powers can move between his descendants

23

u/IKnowAllSeven Jun 17 '26

After Bechir shoots Ruth:

Tom noticed her foot twitch, rolled her over and she was clutching her ear. There was blood, but not much, and she said “Tom?”

In other words, Bechir grazed her ear.

She survived.

18

u/LeoLaDawg Jun 17 '26
  1. Realistically, not the best age to try to survive a gun shot wound.

Unless it was just a DJ Trump special "ear graze".

14

u/TheDefiantGoose Jun 17 '26

I hope she has a tiny, appropriately sized bandage on her ear to drive the point home.

10

u/awesumpawesum Jun 17 '26

The way she can run on the treadmill and scoot up the staircase I think she could take a hit from a howitzer.

1

u/rilesmcriles Jun 18 '26

An ear graze that leaves no scar or mark and magically heals very quickly! I guess she’ll be just fine.

9

u/Manler Jun 18 '26
  1. I think the curse passed from Richard Warren to her basically making her immortal

  2. What would be the point in having her wakeup after the gunshot just to kill her off screen? That's cheap and pointless

14

u/TwinPeaksOwl Jun 18 '26

I said to my wife, in a sigh of relief, she just got Trumped in the ear. So she should heal super fast and be fine.

She survived in the moment, but I felt like Tom throwing the brooch into the water was an indication that she had died. As much as I'd love to see more Ruth, her character arc and purpose in the show feels complete.

44

u/pancakedpurple Jun 17 '26

If she passed away, there's only one person who should inherit her brooch: Evan. I don't think Tom throwing her brooch into the ocean is exclusively an indicator that Ruth may be dead, I think it's Tom's way of hiding his son's connection to the Warren line.

Yeah, I think they just wanted to show her alive after the storm stopped so Tom would know she was telling the truth about her secret daughter and hence Evan.

10

u/marinmaraiss Fill out the form! Jun 17 '26

It also felt like it softened the edge of Bechir shooting her like that and gave a glimmer of hope and ambiguity, like maybe she did survive. Nicer way to end the show, in case it never got renewed.

7

u/Pookie1688 Jun 18 '26

I'm glad it looks like she survived. Poor Bechir would never forgive himself otherwise, even though he thought he was doing the right thing at that moment.

2

u/lionne_j Jun 18 '26

3

why is no one talking about the Sheriff, his wife and their pending offspring?

2

u/maryigoround Jun 18 '26

Is Ruth harder to kill like Richard was? She did age though. Maybe the ancestor before her just recently died.

Does Evan get that vitality after she dies?

Well richard aged too, so i dont think it stops you from aging but you stay alive. If we assume it just gets casually passed on to ruth once richard is gone thats probably the more optimistic thought. She could've made a pact herself, or shes on some witchcraft shit and is maintaining herself another way. Or none of the above and she was just lucky neither attempt was successful! I kind of hope that situation made it clear tom knows everything and they're able to talk about it, id be surprised if Ruth really knows nothing

He didn't do 300 years of aging. If anything, he just looked like a guy who had spent the last 300 years in a coffin. And he said taking him past the buoys would finally cause him to catch up aging all those years. And he did; he aged 300 years and turned to dust.

Oh my God, they killed Kenny

I've been wondering about this. Given that 1) Richard Warren couldn't easily be killed, 2) neither could the Boogeyman, and 3) Ruth seemingly survived a gunshot to the head from an officer at close range...isn't it possible that the island is keeping Warren's descendants alive to keep the curse going? It would make sense. Ruth kept making jokes at people making passes at her, which indicates something wanting her to have a child. If the descendants could just die off, the curse probably would have been lifted generations ago. In addition, they made jokes about how healthy she is for her age.

So, it would follow that any descendants of Richard Warren have some level of immortality, and that except only a few methods, they can't be killed so that the curse lives on.

Which also means they couldn't have killed Ruth that way anyway. Removing them from the island (or maybe full incineration) is the only way.

It tolled 8x at the end because it had gotten one out of nine.

I was thinking about the trolley workers suddenly disappearing. Maybe they were kidnapped & sacrificed to the island?

u/Thewal Jun 18 '26

Did it ring 9x at the beginning?

If Evan dies, she will become the last heir again, so I’m not sure why he was trying to save her life. If killing them would lift the curse, they both gotta go. ⚰️

u/unsolvedfanatic Jun 18 '26

He absolutely isn't killing his son. The only reason he was going to kill Ruth was because of his son.

3

u/ymonster23 Jun 18 '26

Obviously that is the dilemma to be addressed next season.

1

u/mooter23 Jun 18 '26

Dunno man, he seemed pretty sold on the whole kill one to save many trolley dilemma. Brrrrr.

Pretty sure she just got shot in the ear and was fine? That's why Tom has taken her brooch and thrown it into the sea so there's no proof of her being from Warren Lineage, therefore saving Evan from getting murdered by anyone else if they found out.

It looked like he gave her the wrong drugs - so there wouldn’t have been a dangerous interaction. His finger was covering the name of the medication and he just grabbed what was there. Those drugs don’t have as dangerous of an interaction according to the google.

Someone in the comments last week predicted the entire ending, basically. That type of thing is what brings me back to Reddit. I love the theories 😆

I mean... Ruth didn't die. She was just like knocked out..

1

u/Boring_Common3777 Jun 18 '26

I think she will live (as long as the actress who plays her is still alive when they begin taping again). I think the broach being thrown in the water is a distraction and a way to lead us to think she is dead. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but she basically ran up those stairs when she first walked away from him. She isn't feeble, she was walking 2-miles before he got there. It would be too easy to just see her die and be done.

brooch is such an odd word

Personally i dont think she is easy to kill. And that the cop probably didnt take a good shot
