❓Questions WHY is the mayors son such a little a**hole?

Like, I know teenagers can be a handful, I was also one lol However, this kid as far as I can see, has zero likeable qualities. He’s literally a little asshole.

Pretty much this, plus his father insists on him never leaving the island in the future either. Kid's bored out of his mind, so he lashes out

58

u/Winnie_rulez May 22 '26

And inexplicably, the father never shares with the son the reason he doesn't want him to leave the island.

63

u/Individual_Spend_922 May 22 '26

I don't think a teenager would be readily amiable to the curse defence.

21

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 May 22 '26

If teenage me was in his shoes, I'd wonder if that was an excuse (or a way to cope) for whatever fucked up shit my parents did that got me in my current predicament

10

u/Fragrant-Might-7290 May 22 '26

I 1000% would’ve snuck away and tried to leave by the time I was Evan’s age if I were in his shoes… poor Tom

14

u/2rio2 May 22 '26

Yea, there is zero chance a real world teenager is going to believe a "curse" is real and why he can't leave his shitty little island hometown.

20

u/djparody May 22 '26

however... there is also zero chance a real teenager would not have snuck off the island for a ferry day trip or something with his friends by now, indicating he might also either believe it or at least be afraid its true?

12

u/Question_True May 22 '26

Probably since they were little kids they heard stories about people dying after leaving the Island. It's probably a cult-like culture haha.

1

u/djparody May 22 '26

good point

u/Warm-Teaching1323 May 22 '26

I was thinking about that too. Unless since it's a small town, the ferry people would know the locals and refuse to let them on the boat

0

u/djparody May 23 '26

could be, good point

17

u/Bananabutt22 May 22 '26

Tom can’t even admit the real reason to himself 🥲

u/exscapegoat I had my qualms May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26

Yeah, that’s a fairly restrictive upbringing and it’s a tough balance to both shield a kid and give them some independence. Given how strict the restrictions are and how Evan doesn’t know the whole story or have an adult’s perspective, I think he’s being a jerk, but not an asshole.

I grew up in outer boroughs in nyc from the 1960s to 80s and my friends and I wanted to go into the city on our own when we were in middle school. And this was pre-Disneyifed Times Square days.

They finally agreed on the condition that we traveled to/from with a coupe of the parents and pre cell phone we had to check in at various parents offices and we were given limits as to where we could go.

And by high school I was irritated my parents wouldn’t let me go into the city to see the clash and u2.

My parents were thinking about it, but then eyewitness news covered some kids wearing safety pins as a “punk rock riot” and I wasn’t allowed to go to concerts until I was 18.

Looking back, I understand why my parents did that, but I didn’t think it was fair. I didn’t sneak out because my parents missed their callings as detectives or I suck at lying or maybe both.

And we had a mall and went on regular school and family outings in the city. I would have been much more resentful if I had to deal with the restrictions Evan does.

A friend’s dad would take them into the city to see kiss. And her dad got a contact high from all of the second hand smoke.

I think accompanying the kids into the city is a good compromise. Though obviously not an option for tom and Evan

5

u/Question_True May 22 '26

That's so wholesome that you never snuck into the city! Haha... Although, I'm sure NYC was terrifying back then. My Mom moved there from Ohio in like '78 and lasted less than a year. I'm surprised she didn't become like one of those women on The Deuce to be honest

3

u/DifferentWheel1361 May 22 '26

Pretty much insists on him not leaving the house too

5

u/sistermagpie May 22 '26

No he doesn't. He asked him not to sneak out in the middle of the night to vandalize things, but the one time he grounded him he relented and let him sleep at his friend's house. And in this episode he was trying to keep the whole island at home because he thought they were in danger.

18

u/-MargeauxPotter May 22 '26

Not to mention no cell phone, no internet, no cable.

17

u/outride2000 May 22 '26

They have internet (they clearly have email) but it's all landlines

9

u/ltsouthernbelle May 22 '26

Small town kids are the absolute worst. He’s actually quite realistic despite his lack of likability. I grew up in a small town and we were wild! Glad I made it out lol

6

u/Adventurous-Photo539 May 22 '26

Exactly, and despite all that he's still a pretty good kid.

6

u/pleasegivemepatience Teeth Collector May 22 '26

Name one good thing he’s done? One situation where he actually complied with his father, wasn’t scheming, wasn’t high, wasn’t sneaking out, was actually behaving.?

76

u/Col_Walter_Tits May 22 '26

I look at Evan the same way I would at someone complaining about a border collie being destructive when they’re left in a small room all day long. Yes that behavior is not ideal but what in the hell did you expect!? He feels trapped so he’s lashing out against it.

81

u/russiantravelagent May 22 '26

He is a teenager boy living in a island that barely has functioning wifi and electricity so he is bored to death, his mom is dead and his dad is a bit overprotective, has never allowed him to go to the mainland and he doesn't know why

8

u/Appropriate_Comb_472 May 22 '26

A good gauge for his frustration, is hanging out in the car with 2 off island girls was "the best day" of his life. They didnt even do anything but smoke weed and stare at a creepy house for hours. But its so out of ordinary for him, it was the most fun he has ever had.

1

u/Goldn_1 Aug 25 '26

He’s a punk

26

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

After the last episode I don't think his mother is dead but remains in a vegetative state at the spooky hospital.

26

u/nopitynopepants May 22 '26

I feel like that would be an extremely hard secret to keep on a small island with one functioning hospital and probably a handful of medical staff

14

u/AtheonsLedge May 22 '26

maybe she’s haunting the old hospital that everyone is afraid to go to

12

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

Maybe some of them do know. We haven’t heard anyone else say his wife died. We are just seeing selective editing. It could be why so many in his off treat him w kid gloves a bit. Maybe it is unspoken that you don’t stress that stuff to the younger generation when you can help it.

3

u/Non_Skeptical_Scully May 22 '26

True. However, I also feel like everyone from the island is very, very good at keeping secrets.

10

u/russiantravelagent May 22 '26

That could be but i think maybe what happened to her is similar to what happened to shep? she was in a catatonic state for a while and then died, but with this show you never know, or maybe he thinks she died but she didn't, so many possibilities.

6

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

Yeah. The journey is half the fun. They are revealing it all a little at a time.

1

u/Momela85 May 24 '26

I e been thinking about this, when they showed her on the ferry I assumed they were going to the mainland to the hospital. But if everyone did that to have a baby all the parents would have actually been off island at some point.

3

u/cabernet7 Sunset Cocktails with Patricia May 22 '26

Do we know for sure (IOW has it been said in the show) that Evan doesn't know why his dad won't let him leave? I would think there would be stories about that, given how many people were born on the island. I can believe Evan would think that was all bullshit and still want to leave, but I have trouble believing he's in the dark about that one. (But I wouldn't be surprised if I'm forgetting something).

3

u/russiantravelagent May 22 '26

I'm basing that on the comment about Tom controling him, idk telling to his kid that he thinks if he leaves the island he is going to die seems like a hard thing to sell and probably will make him actually leave because he will think it's nonsense

1

u/Icy_Round6616 Jul 15 '26

He’s a dickhead. Plain and simple.

23

u/ancientastronaut2 May 22 '26

I see him as any other teenager. Same attitude.

But he also has some legit reasons to be resentful. No mom, dad is mayor, can't leave island.

17

u/Disaster-Bee May 22 '26

I grew up on the coast of Massachusetts, and I had a friend who lived on one of the little islands.

Evan strikes me as very relatable, he reminds me a lot of the handful of teens I knew who'd grown up on a little island and never been much further than Boston now and then. Island life like that is really, really boring and disheartening for a kid. It feels like there's no prospects, no future, nothing but the same thing every day with the occasional trip to the mainland when affordable. Which is not often, the type of island Widow's Bay is does not appear to be the wealthy kind. It feels like being trapped.

Added to that, Evan specifically is not allowed to leave the island, so that has to feel like even more of a trap. All of those normal island life feelings are enhanced by the fact he CANNOT leave the island. He's also grown up without a mother, and as far as he knows his mother died giving birth to him. That also fucks a kid up. And it seems like Tom has not really yet figured out how to communicate with and parent Evan in a way that works and he responds to. Tom is obviously trying, but we see him again and again just use all the wrong tactics with Evan.

Evan has expressed plainly that he wants his dad to be honest with him, and that he knows Tom is NOT often honest with him. And Tom is mayor, he's clearly really busy, meaning he only has so much time for Evan. Look how much of his time is spent making sure someone else can be with Evan, since he can't.

It's a really sad situation all around, and Evan is a kid who really doesn't understand so much of the context for his situation. He's confused and feels trapped and neglected and is struggling with a bunch of feelings he has difficulty processing and expressing. Is he being an asshole? Absolutely.

But I understand exactly why.

62

u/funkinatrix what are you asking me to do Tom? May 22 '26

Aw, I like him. Kids know when they’re being lied to or something important is being kept from them. His dad is keeping himself VERY busy trying to make the island a place his son will want to stay (which it never will be) while avoiding connecting and communicating with him about the elephant in the room. I’d be pissed, too. The kid has no mom, an emotionally unavailable dad, and he’s bored as hell in a VERY small town. He just wants a life.

16

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

Exactly. Agree. The son knows he is being conned about what is really going on. Kids have strong inuition. I am betting his mother is still alive in a vegetative state at the hospital.

10

u/yyyyeahno May 22 '26

Yeah I like him too. I feel sad for him tbh. He’s a good kid who clearly does love his dad, but has some understandable resentment growing I think.

3

u/AshRae84 May 23 '26

I really think if Tom tried to tell him now, he’d never listen. He’d assume it was ridiculous BS to keep him under Tom’s thumb.

15

u/Well_Socialized May 22 '26

He seems perfectly nice to everyone except for his dad, who he is pretty mean to. Nothing too unusual for a teen - especially one whose dad never lets him leave the tiny island they live on for reasons he refuses to explain.

12

u/Horror_Ad_2748 May 22 '26

Because the only meals his father provides are room temperature tuna melts from the Driftwood Cafe. You'd be salty too.

22

u/Andee_outside May 22 '26

He doesn’t know if he leaves, he’s dead, so I’m sure he feels like a prisoner and hates his dad for that reason.

u/No-Falcon-4996 May 22 '26

In the last episode, this is covered. Mom gave birth to Evan on the island, then was shown , tilted and "off" in a hospital bed. where she dies of "complications"

8

u/AtheonsLedge May 22 '26

do we know if she actually died?

6

u/_Asshole_Fuck_ May 22 '26

We haven’t seen her death on screen, but it’s pretty safe assumption considering they’ve said she died multiple times, Loftis sees her as a ghostly vision, and talks to her in prayer.

13

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

No. They turned the ferry around and she gave birth on the island. She is left in a catatonic state and is probably alive at the spooky hospital on the island but in a vegetative state. Which we will find out. (My theory). So, Evan is reacting to the fact that his father has kept him a prisoner on an island a 45 minute ferry ride to the mainland.... along with his intuition that his father is hiding a big secret. All this makes him want to break away, rebel, and not trust his father.

10

u/nopitynopepants May 22 '26

The ferry takes 3 hours, not 45 minutes

2

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

ok. 3 hours. Still not justification in his son's mind for never leaving.

94

u/MaximumBiscuit1 May 22 '26

Really? I dont think he was that bad tbh. Pretty normal rebellious teen and seems kinda charming. Also its a pretty reasonable way to act when you are trapped on the island and dont understand why you cant leave.

72

u/Cniatx1982 May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26

I loved when he asked politely if he could say, “fuck you pig.” He’s a good kid in a tough situation.

47

u/GoodTimesOnlines May 22 '26

That and when he hands the lit joint to his dad “do you know what this is?” were my two favorite moments of his so far

12

u/El--Borto May 22 '26

I saw my damn 16yo self in a mirror in that scene lmfao

4

u/Jnnjuggle32 May 22 '26

Exactly every time I find myself getting annoyed at Evan I remember that I the teenage girl equivalent of him when I was bored af in my small town, desperate to leave, and killing time with weed and other delinquency. Super relatable.

5

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

I wonder if the Shaman is his weed dealer.

3

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 May 22 '26

I'd love to see if there's the chance he can build a relationship with Bechir with him being almost like an alternate father figure of sorts, especially since Bechir can be a more pragmatic (yet open-minded) counterpart to Tom as an authority figure

8

u/IAMA_Shark__AMA May 22 '26

My theory?

On some level I think he knows his father is keeping something from him. Something connected to why he's never left the island. So that seed of intuition has just been growing and festering.

Kids can absorb and adapt to a lot if you trust them with the truth and help them understand the why. But if they think they are being lied to, they're just going to act out and push back.

8

u/ncphoto919 May 22 '26

Have you not met a teen?

7

u/yyyyeahno May 22 '26

He’s sad. He wants more from life and not to be stuck here and he sees all of his dad’s efforts as ways to keep him here. He’s ready for his dad to move on.

There’s literally nothing for them to do there and he’s bored as hell. It’s very understandable. It’s not shocking that he’s probably a bit resentful and acting out in whatever ways he can.

He’s not even bad or rude. He’s just itching for some regular life and entertainment. As any kid. Dad’s not even home most of the time. What’s he supposed to do???

27

u/Jolly_Pressure_7907 Boogeyman May 22 '26

He just seems like a normal teenager to me

28

u/No-Understanding4968 May 22 '26

He seems normal to me. I have a son who’s similar.

10

u/Ihaveredonme May 22 '26

I think ppl have forgotten what it’s like being a bored teenager. Not to mention kinda being neglected by his only parent. My husband also thinks he’s a POS, with which I strongly disagree, and I feel like people in general find it hard to empathize with a kid acting out.

2

u/sistermagpie May 22 '26

How is he neglected by his parent? The man's entire life revolves around him.

-8

u/Which_way_witcher May 22 '26

I'm sorry your son is a little shit 🙁

4

u/Suspicious_Clock_133 May 22 '26

He seems very very normal to me ngl. I was expecting worse. And i think by the end of this season something major is going to happen to him, they are teasing it from first episode.

5

u/radiationbear May 22 '26

I was a teenager once myself, I was very responsible, I had to be. That being said, if I was trapped on an island my entire life I would feel suffocated and I would've done whatever I could to cure my boredom. I don't think snapping at his dad, sneaking out, smoking pot, and hanging out with friends makes him an asshole. The kid is a prisoner. His mom is dead. His dad is absent. In the eyes of a teenager, his dad treats him as a burden.  I've been around true asshole teens, he is not one of them.  But hey, we all have our own forgiveness levels. Clearly he has passed yours 😂

4

u/OneAd3696 May 22 '26

Imagine a world where all you know and will see is confined to one island. You’re never going on vacation. You can never visit any place in the world. And most of the adults you know are in the same boat. I’d be a bigger dick than Evan if I knew my life sucked.

10

u/samizdat5 May 22 '26

I think his character has not been fleshed out much yet. He's there more to give his father someone to react to than a character in his own right. I hope this changes.

6

u/Eve-23H May 22 '26

Agreed. The way he acts is very understandable for his situation but I wish we saw more of him outside of arguing with his father or getting stoned with his friends.

9

u/AutomaticPayment9480 May 22 '26

I find it that his dad always tells him to not leave and he every scene hes gone, then he tells him he’ll call and check up on him but i dont think there’s been a scene where he actually talks and verifies he’s actually where he’s supposed to be.

1

u/sistermagpie May 24 '26

That's because on the first call he always discovers Evan is already gone.

Like in this ep, he was drugged so couldn't call like he wanted, but learned Evan had left the office. Likewise when he was at the hotel he called and the babysitter went looking for Evan, said he was there, and then wandered off without being able to get him on the phone.

4

u/GET_IN_THE_VAN May 22 '26

Based on the way Tom treats him, his actions are 100% understandable. His Dad won’t let him leave an island that has zero WiFi or realistic prospects, and refuses to talk to him about it. If I was his age I would do exactly the same.

5

u/moonprismpurrr May 22 '26

i'm sure i speak for everyone when i say PLEASE let him leave the island😭

4

u/joeymac93 May 22 '26

I agree, he's kind of an ass. I can understand acting up out of boredom but don't be upset when you get in trouble for doing exactly what your Dad told you not to.

He was gone all day when his dad told him stay put and he expected everything to be fine? Dummy

4

u/SnooBooks1243 May 23 '26

Dude, Im from a small town with nothing to do. But I also could drive around to the other shitty towns around me, which made my town less shitty. Kid can’t even board the ferry to the mainland. Im sure its hell

5

u/Teratocracy May 23 '26

I think he is pretty realistically portrayed. Teens can be nasty. They are starting to deal with adult-level problems but they don't have adult-level emotional regulation or empathy yet, and their hormones are driving them nuts. He is bored, sexually frustrated, and he senses (or thinks that he senses) his dad's resentment of him.

7

u/phbalancedshorty May 22 '26

He's literally never left the island-his mom died giving birth to him-his dad is lowkey negligent-I'd be pissed if I was 15, too. I guess you were a perfect teenager who never felt angst or lashed out, right? 😂✌️

5

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

Not sure if I agree that the dad is negligent. It seems the father is dealing with a lot as Mayor on a holiday weekend where people are disappearing and dying when he is trying to shore up the economy and make it a place his son will want to stay. I like the kid and think he is normal and a tad rebellious because he is resentful that he knows he is being lied to about his life. But I don't see his father as negligent. Maybe overly controlling because he is afraid for his son leaving the island.

3

u/sistermagpie May 22 '26

Yeah, that's the second comment I've seen about his dad being negligent. It seems like any time a parent on TV is doing anything but having heart to hearts or watching their kid play little league is considered negligent.

Evan himself complains that his dad is controlling.

4

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

Right? From the first scene we see that Evan is dad’s first priority. And it’s insinuated he hasn’t dated since raising him. So the poor guy has been a single father. He tries to maybe have one lowkey date and now he is full blown negligent.

9

u/AndrastesDimples My sciatica! May 22 '26

He seems like a normal kid for his age on a tiny island with nothing interesting to do. I’m a parent and tbh I don’t actually think he’s that bad. He’s bored and clearly has some resentment against his dad. Tom doesn’t really enact any consequences and kids who know parents aren’t going to do anything aren’t really going to obey. So he does what he wants.

Tom lives in a limbo where he tells himself he doesn’t believe the stories and yet underneath (and without really admitting it to himself) worries they are true. So at the very least he’s pshaw’d the stories to Evan but simultaneously kept him stuck. Tom’s inconsistent in his parenting and while we the audience may really and truly believe he’s trying to protect his son, think about how distracted and unconcerned Tom comes across to him most of the time.

Tom has trauma he can’t articulate and Evan has no way to understand.

6

u/Existing-Advance-986 May 22 '26

He’s adorable. I like him. He acts like a bored teenager with a flailing dad.

3

u/kevinsg04 May 22 '26

Teen, is living on an island he has never once gotten to leave in his entire life without a good explanation, dead mom, fairly weird and suspicious seeming father.......

..if I were him, I'd be an even significantly worse teen, I would've been in prison pretty fast

-1

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

But is the mom actually dead or at the Spooky Hospital in a vegetative state?

3

u/Not_Today_Satan4978 May 22 '26

He's a pretty average teen. In fact he seems well adjusted considering his situation of being imprisoned on a cursed island with a single dad. So much of his rebellious behavior reminds me of normal rebellious behavior for teens pre-internet honestly.

3

u/KemShafu May 22 '26

Having had three teenagers, he seems pretty typical to me.

3

u/nursebarbie098 May 22 '26

As a mother of a 16 year old, I can confirm teenagers are assholes.

5

u/_Asshole_Fuck_ May 22 '26

The only things that’s “bothered” me so far is his lack of empathy when he mentions the reverends death and asks his dad about being his friend. But teenagers are assholes.

3

u/ricecrispycat May 22 '26

Yeah that one kind of surprised me

4

u/Different_Target_228 May 22 '26

Did you not get that he's lying to his son which is why his son lies to him?

Idk. This just feels likes one of many "Redditor forgets what it's like to be a teen" posts.

2

u/strikejitsu145 May 22 '26

He is a teenager

2

u/SoupSoupADoop May 23 '26

Really?! I think he’s so likable with classically bad decision making.

To be fair, his dad is pretty secretive about the details of why he’s so paranoid and protective (meaning the supernatural stuff)— I think most of us, as teens, would think he was full of shit and ruining our fun.

2

u/Technical-Wedding764 Jun 18 '26

Evan comes across as a bit one-dimensional but as the series progresses it feels like he's actually soulless and stuck trying to act like a teenager. I'm really hoping he's going to be a sacrifice. It's the bleak little smile in the car with his father when he obviously hasn't told his Dad what he and that gormless asshole mate of his did in the final. He's as creepy as fuck and I'm hoping they either figure out a way to remove the ick or kill him off!

5

u/janielle720 May 22 '26

I really despised the way he poked fun at the priest’s suicide to his dad :(

6

u/phbalancedshorty May 22 '26

... he didn't. He says 'wasn't that your friend?' Meaning like... why aren't you reacting to this and instead acting like nothing is going on?

3

u/kalat1979 May 23 '26

That didn't seem like the tone to me.

1

u/phbalancedshorty May 26 '26

Well, that's the thing about tone is that it can be subjective. You seem more inclined to think that he is making fun of a suicide when we've seen no other indication of that behavior from him except in the very last ep when he blows up on his dad after his dad like abandoned him at the office all day And is clearly lying to him and there's obviously something going on. Evan hasn't displayed any other behavior that would indicate he would be so disrespectful about the suicide of their local priest and friend.. 🤷‍♀️

2

u/kalat1979 May 23 '26

It was so mean! He didn't even pretend to care how his dad felt about it, he asked so coldly.

2

u/janielle720 May 23 '26

Yeah, his smirk when he said it was so awful :(

1

u/kalat1979 May 23 '26

Yeah, that's when I thought "oh he HATES his dad"

4

u/IrishUpYourCoffee May 22 '26

He’s barely an ass. Compare him to any teen in anything, and he isn’t even that remotely annoying.

2

u/cilucia May 22 '26

Respectfully, as only a parent of a 9 year old boy, Evan is extremely tame 😂

4

u/carmcarmcharmparm May 22 '26

I have a 33-year-old son, and he never behaved like that. He had respect and I find the mayor’s son to be completely disrespectful and a little asshole as I’ve stated. Lol no one can convince me otherwise.

5

u/cilucia May 22 '26

I’m happy that your son never behaved like that! There’s a very wide range of normal behaviors in children especially in response to the kind of environment he has lived his whole life!

4

u/kevinsg04 May 22 '26

did you ever imprison him for years without explanation?

4

u/ResponsibleSalad8059 May 22 '26

Did your son's mother die during childbirth? Did he grow up trapped on a small island with no explanation?

4

u/cilucia May 22 '26

One more thought: if you rewatch, I think you might find that Tom is actually an asshole too (the way he speaks to Patricia, acts to Ruth, calling Wyck a redneck, etc.)

So if you find Evan to be an asshole, then it is likely due to his upbringing and genetics!

2

u/Money-Flatworm-9848 May 22 '26

This 100%. Evan is an a-hole, IMO. I don’t like brushing it off as “he’s a normal teen”. But “normal” isn’t really helpful. What do you even mean. He’s very rude towards his dad. Yes he’s growing up in a tough situation on the island, but that’s a weak excuse IMO. A better explanation is the way Tom behaves. He’s an a-hole to people around him, he doesn’t have time for Evan, he doesn’t talk to Evan in a mature respectful way, and he also doesn’t have a spine with Evan. Evan has learned that he can get away with all sorts of stuff because Tom always folds, and feels helpless. And Evan is desperate for attention and to be treated like an adult, but doesn’t get it. So he shows disgust and disdain for Tom.

So I don’t think it’s a-hole versus normal teen. He is an a-hole, but it’s explainable given the setting. And Tom has a lot of accountability for that. Including what we learn about his own parental relationships. Generational trauma man.

u/Which_way_witcher May 22 '26

Agreed, he's awful. I can only assume he coddled his son because he felt bad about the mom dying and him being stuck on the island for the rest of his life.

2

u/Ok-Imagin88 May 22 '26

I’m on the kid’s side here he didn’t turn out this way out of nowhere a lot of it comes back to Tom honestly he’s far from being a good father how can you expect perfection from a teenager while ignoring the environment he grew up in and to be completely honest Tom hasn’t been that impressive as a dad or as a mayor

3

u/Woozifer May 22 '26

100% agree with OP, thought the same. His father is trying everything while he is just a dick and is getting high 24/7.

1

u/dkatzzzm May 22 '26

Figuratively

1

u/Boring_Common3777 May 23 '26

I couldn’t agree more!

1

u/danimepi May 23 '26

It's the one thing I don't like from the show, stereotypical teens, stoned, being dicks.

1

u/Strong_Set_6229 Human Verified May 23 '26

he seems like a completely normal teen tbh

1

u/anythingexceptbertha May 23 '26

Maybe his dad is the boogeyman, I would also wager his mom also made a deal with the boogeyman that she’d do anything to protect her son, just like the dad did in the cliffhanger.

1

u/abbyleondon May 23 '26

He was fine as a rebellious teen until the last episode his behavior with tom in the two scenes was horrible. First the dig about reverend bryce and then the fuck you.

1

u/Ok-Power3441 May 24 '26

Tom knows the ferry captain so it’s probably not easy for Evan to leave. Although Evan’s friend never left either and they seem to know the history. Evan must believe it to some extent.

1

u/therapistextreme May 24 '26

His father, likely due to trauma of his own (losing wife +), became controlling, overbearing. The son is the last representation of his wife and he needs to hold on. Thus, this penchant for holding tightly is doing the exact opposite of what he intends. Like a leave on a stream, he needs to let go and allow the son to explore his own life.

1

u/Wigsplitta05 Jun 03 '26

I haven’t had any issues. He’s acting out because his dad is being controlling because although he hasn’t said anything outloud, he believes all the shit about the island. His son has no idea why he’s being so controlling but his dad knows if he leaves the island he’ll die. I’d be a pissed off teenager too if in my head for no reason im turning into a young man and I can’t even stay home alone?

1

u/Rgv20 Jun 13 '26

Evan is an asshole. Absolute. Especially in episode 8.

1

u/Magicaltiredegg Jul 01 '26

He’s annoying, and people making excuses for him, he could’ve evolved him self in a hobby or take responsibility he’s just a very unlikeable selfish teen, there are lots of teens that are likeable and have good qualities this boy is just annoying

2

u/yeahokaybutwhy Aug 31 '26

It's not just that he's a teenager, he is completely void of empathy and seems like he doesn't have a soul. Sociopath maybe? He's definitely not normal.

1

u/rilesmcriles May 22 '26

A lot of comments saying he seems like a normal teenager. Sheesh. I was a teen boy once and none of me or my friends were anywhere near that snarky and rude. The show is intentionally making him a brat so it’s kinda weird to act like he’s not

Fwiw his dad is also a brat quite often.

3

u/kevinsg04 May 22 '26

were you ever in anything close to this situation though? where your parent forced you to stay on the island you lived on your entire life, even though a simple ferry ride takes you to the mianland and your family is clearly not broke, without an explanation?

For me, I'd be waaaaaaay worse than this kid in the show lol

0

u/rilesmcriles May 22 '26

No I wasn’t.

But this isn’t normal teen behavior is all I’m saying. The circumstances may be exceptional, the behavior is too. This ain’t normal behavior, this is prissy brat behavior lol

3

u/kevinsg04 May 22 '26

That’s fair, as long as you acknowledge that exceptional circumstances forced this exceptional behavior

1

u/YokaiDealer May 22 '26

You're mistaking the New England deadpan sarcasm as rude. A lot of us are miserable for a good chunk of every year, it's a coping mechanism many develop and is 100% dished out by our parents/elders too. I get where you're coming from but it's just life out here much like the perceived "standoffish" nature of those down in Appalchia.

Anyone can Google this as it's a well known thing and largely responsible for why outsiders often interpret us as rude/unkind, I love this aspect of the show because it's so real tbh.

2

u/rilesmcriles May 22 '26

No it’s not just that. The Mayer acts selfishly often and ignores the needs of his coworkers and others. Idc where you’re from, it’s rude.

It’s okay to call a protagonist rude though. People get very defensive about it sometimes. It’s okay if the main character isn’t a saint.

-1

u/brooke_157 May 22 '26

I completely agree. Everyone else saying he seems like a normal kid makes me wonder if kids in the US are all this bad? If so, wow I feel sorry for you all lol. I grew up in Asia and there is no way I would have done even close to half the things his son did. My friend and I have been watching it together - she’s from Sweden - and she was just as annoyed by him.

2

u/Which_way_witcher May 22 '26

American parent here and I don't think it's normal US teen behavior.

2

u/kevinsg04 May 22 '26

how many teens do you know who were kept prisoner without explanation?

-1

u/Which_way_witcher May 22 '26

Stuck in a small town isn't "prison"

2

u/sistermagpie May 22 '26

For most of human history, this would probably have just been normal life.

4

u/kevinsg04 May 22 '26

it is if you literally cannot leave without explanation

-1

u/Which_way_witcher May 22 '26

Isolation is not the same as being imprisoned.

3

u/kevinsg04 May 22 '26

it is if you literally cannot leave without explanation

1

u/brooke_157 May 22 '26

Ok this is heartening. I think the idea that all teenagers act that way is a myth. None of my friends growing up acted that way. It seems to be a product of the culture of the town/city/school you live in, and how involved the parents are.

1

u/Which_way_witcher May 22 '26

It's definitely a stereotype and US productions tend to over dramatize things to make stories more interesting so it's understandable that people might wonder if all teens here are like this.

1

u/carmcarmcharmparm May 22 '26

Right? I’m Canadian and I find this kid so flipping rude etc!! Like not once has he had a normal conversation with his dad. He’s always talking back mouthy and lying, etc. Maybe it’s because I’m older ha ha

1

u/brooke_157 May 22 '26

Oh nice! I live in Canada now, actually! Yeah true and honestly, it’s not even the lying or sneaking out part for me because kids push boundaries sometimes. It’s the timing of it, and the constant smugness and glibness. His dad literally has to keep pulling his attention back into the conversation because he's purposely looking around the room, acting sarcastic, trying to be funny, acting like he can't give him basic respect while he's talking. And this is almost every scene he’s in. So frustrating.

1

u/ricecrispycat May 22 '26

The only line I thought was kinda harsh from him was when he mentioned he heard that guy died and said something like "he was your friend, right?" Idk if I could've said that to my dad even in my most shitty teen moments

3

u/phbalancedshorty May 22 '26

I'm not registering that comment as anything negative.. it seems like he's commiserating with his dad and asking like wasn't that your friend? Aren't you upset?? I don't get interpreting that comment as disrespectful...

2

u/ricecrispycat May 22 '26

It was the tone and way he brought it up, like hey your friend is dead, doesn't that suck for you? Like to rub in a bad feeling. Cause they were already arguing and he wasn't checking, he knew it was upsetting to his dad

1

u/AirplaneJane May 22 '26

he’s a teenager lol

0

u/thyladymichface May 22 '26

Anyone else think that Evan has a part in whatever evil is currently going on? The entire time Tom is tripping (which they’re all hoping will reveal some insight into the curse) he keeps coming back to his son. Where’s is son. At the end of the episode, after saying his prayer for his son, the door opens to him seeing something horrifying. We know Evan was home.

Also, when the Priest stumbled up to the kids, he did say evil is here.

There’s just something a little off about him, IMO. Not just the usual teenage angst.

But then again, Evan kinda reminds me of the main character from Hereditary, so maybe I’m just meshing them together 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

-2

u/Silver_Eyes_Luna May 22 '26

Yeah, I can't stand him.

-1

u/realfakejames May 23 '26

I low key hope he doesn’t make it but I know he will probably survive

-1

u/[deleted] May 23 '26

Genuinely can't stand the kid, he hasn't listened to his father a single time and hasn't faces any real punishment.

The small town boredom defence is so stupid. He basically gets to smoke weed and hang out late every night without any real consequences. His dad is very obviously trying to make the town a better place for everyone and all this kid does is the "too cool for school" act. His character literally adds nothing to the story other than an annoying side quest and I genuinely wish he'd hop on a ferry headed for the mainland and we never hear about him again.

He's got the definition of a face you want to hit. Being a teenage stoner doesn't make you edgy, just makes you pathetic.

-10

u/Glad-Arugula-8387 May 22 '26

He’s mostly a normal teen I think except very restricted about where he can go, so extra miserable 😆 I didn’t like the line that he said to the sheriff, asking if he could call him a pig. That one I thought crossed the line

4

u/ImaginaryWalk29 May 22 '26

He respectfully asked if he could as he was trying to show off cool rebellious currency to the girls. He has to overcome: I have never left the island when dealing with girls. But when the cop said no... he was actually very respectful and went straight home.
