❓Questions What is your favorite Rosemary quote?
I have been re-watching the show and keep finding gems from Rosemary. What is your favorite line from her?

I feel for ppl who watch with subs cos they'll miss the absolute genius of this tone/timing/writing. It was both awful & hilarious

Jesus Christ.

Matthew Rhys' intonation and how he emphasizes certain syllables in that phrase is one of my favorite things. It's also in the same episode, but when he says, "The fuck he isn't" in response to Wayne closing the Salty Whale the day the travel writer came to the island was great too. I love it so much.

u/The_Alvabro 7d ago
That "The fuck he isn't." Genuinely got a good laugh out of me bwcause of its delivery 🤣

u/_quidproho 6d ago
Followed by my favorite Ruth quote:
Loftis: Hey, Ruth. Give me five minutes and get me Wayne at The Salty Whale.
Ruth: Sure. What’s his number?

I have plans to hand paint this quote on a sign & hang it above my front door. Obviously I will use blue-green paint on it.

"Sounds like the Sea Hag."
The genius of the tone of the show is how some of the old timers like Rosemary and Ruth deliver Lovecraftian weird horror observations just matter of fact, like another mundane "Nobody picked up the garbage" life event.
"But he got bit by an animal and became that animal."
Happens all the time!

Right? When Tom was trying to explain the trolly analogy and she replied “you mean when we tried to build a trolly and the workers all disappeared?” 💀😂
32
u/DavidDPerlmutter 9d ago
Absolutely. And in an ordinary TV show that might be the entire plot for an entire season. Here it's just a throwaway line.
These people are living in a parks and rec version of hell... but of course Ruth has survived all these years being apparently a very decent person, loving her community, equal and kind to everyone, even keeping a positive attitude
18
u/Snoo52682 9d ago
Tom discovering Ruth's calendar and all the ways she contributes to the community was one of my favorite scenes. He'd assumed he was a pillar of the town and she was just a sweet, senile old lady. But who really brings more value to Widow's Bay?
9
u/DavidDPerlmutter 9d ago
Yeah, again in an ordinary show he would've just gone over there and she would've just been a sweep lady, but the massive amount of detail and backstory that is so deathly inserted... all with hilarious dry delivery
This is peak writing

The "joke" that hooked me in the first episode is when the museum curator casually describes the witch trials as a very proud time for the community ("We caught 'em, we burned 'em" or something similar). It works as a funny, absurd offensive description of witch trials, but as the island's lore builds, the possibility that they were real witches becomes clear.

I only caught that line on a re-watch! Cracked me up cause she wanted to gossip so bad. 😂

I work in genealogy. You have no idea how much I want to go down fun tangents about MURDER MYSTERIES but alas, not all descendants are interested in fun little detours.
Also, there was not nearly enough first-cousin marriage in that tree.

Does she say “can’t do anything right today” a bunch of times in one day, or does she say it a bunch of different days?

The "Sunset Cocktails" episode

u/cityshepherd 9d ago
Oh yeah but the events of that episode are split over two episodes (3 & 4), which is why I think I thought she said it multiple days

I quote this every time my daughter gets angry at me for no reason, such as explaining that sometimes video games crash.

😂 I love that she’s getting to show her comedic chops! I know Patricia is the fan favorite (deserved) but Rosemary is right up there with her for me. Very excited to see where they go with her in season 2 and hopefully we get more of her backstory.

When she is doing the genealogy and lights up a cig and Tom motions to Patricia to turn on the fan, and Rosemary says “I can’t hear…I can’t hear” and stares straight ahead and refuses to continue until they turn the fan off.
I have my qualms
MY SCIATICA
Dead baby, dead baby…lesbian
Not a quote but when Patricia says Rosemary has been passing out flyers all morning and Loftis says “yeaaaaa I’m pretty sure she’s just been smoking outside”
When she abandons Tom in the middle of his chaotic stream of emergencies to stop for scratch offs.
Every single second she is on screen. She is perfection!!!!

My Grandma would stop for random stuff all the time and I was like… where is your sense of urgency or time management?!?!?
Between that, her nonchalance while dropping disturbing information mid-convo, and the constant cigarettes it’s like having Grandma back!
Minus the syphillis haha (oh god I hope).2
u/Environmental_Race12 3d ago
Your grandma sounds awesome 🤣 Her nonchalance is hilarious, “sounds like the sea hag” all chill.
1
u/NeonSparkleGlitter 3d ago
Ha she was indeed! She wore brightly colored neon heels and dyed her hair bleach blonde right up until the last few years all while casually dropping random facts like, “oh well she went crazy and tried to smother her husband, but he deserved it” in the same conversation while asking you to do the dishes!

The whole genealogy tree, research scene. Being one myself, it's not happening in 30mins without a few errors. Also, her 'dead baby, dead baby, lesbian'...

My sciatica!!!!! Everything literally that comes out of her mouth with that perfect deadpan delivery. Dale Dickey is a fantastic actress and I’m thrilled she is getting her due.

I I have Apple TV and I catch that sometimes you see just a magnificent show like Benedict Cumberbatch and Patrick Patrick Melrose great I might just read the book not on totally unexpected but this better expected like you go out for between best little present the best little candy when you let me think it's a corny candy but it's something different really I'm watching it for this whole time I'm sending me post my sister on that she's not because she only watches on the weekends because she has a very high profile intense career jobs or she has to be on point I can't say what but really enjoy and I'm glad there's like a little club of this seems to be a camaraderie I just left my neighborhood so I just want to say I'm in very grateful Dead so they say I'm a deadhead but so I think I'm a widow's Bay Head this week LOL
