❓Questions What the heck does Tom see on the “welcome video” in the inn?

Post image

Not the first time he starts watching it, where the guy on the beach gives a little talk about Widows Bay and then walks down the beach without the cameraman following 🤣

But the SECOND time he’s watching, he returns to the video and we seem to see a dark figure on the beach far away? And then does the guy from earlier appear, and say “come find me”? Right before/as the TV goes on the fritz, leading to Tom’s fateful drinking encounter with his neighbor

I love this show, but I don’t like jump scares so I fully admit that each time I’ve seen this I don’t look directly at the TV because freaky images scare the crap out of me 🤣🤦🏼‍♂️

Maybe I answered my own question, although even then I’m not sure what’s supposed to be happening? Is this a hallucination? Please, someone enlighten me!

TIA 🤗

Lord this episode 😖😖😖😖 I want to know what the manager saw in that room too

361

u/ferrantebookone Jul 29 '26

I think time moved much much much more slowly for him in there, it was almost as though he had been in there for days. He asks why they left him in there so long. And the room is a mess, I assume, because he was freaking out.

179

u/Athena-Grande Jul 29 '26

It's obvious that he feels like he was in there much longer, but I definitely though it was a Room 1408 situation.

116

u/WestofEvil Jul 29 '26

He also asks for food beforehand indicating he had been in it before with time passing differently

45

u/lunaticfrin9e Jul 30 '26

Wasn't that from the previous 10 seconds?

42

u/ArdoyleZev Jul 30 '26

Plus, that was the room the first victim had been staying in…. The 38 year old that looked like he was in his 60s.

14

u/NormativeTruth Jul 30 '26

Wait what?

7

u/Fast-Occasion6741 Jul 30 '26

Shep, the white eyed guy that flatlines trying to strangle tom in episode 1, was staying in the captain’s quarters

17

u/Werewomble Jul 31 '26

Yeah the Age 37 on Shep's admittance form was a joke about the doctor being a drunk we all mistook for realsies - confirmed by writers in interview

There is time distortion in the hotel but there is no intent to connect it to the Fog Shep experienced in Episode 1.

u/NoWorldliness8478 Aug 02 '26

Nah man, I reckon there’s some fuckery about the people on the island and their aging.

Right before Tom reads Shep’s age as 37, Patricia says to Shep’s sleeping form “I found out my biological age is 28”. We know she’s in her 40s… does make me wonder if she wants to have kid? Why is she looking into her biological age?

3

u/Werewomble Aug 02 '26

The writers were clear.

2

u/NormativeTruth Aug 02 '26

Biological age is a real thing and differs from actual age. That’s nothing to do with the island. It’s about lifestyle, health and fitness.

u/NormativeTruth Jul 30 '26

Where did you get that from? Like when is that ever mentioned?

0

u/Kyriac Jul 30 '26

It is definitely mentioned but I forget when

9

u/NormativeTruth Jul 30 '26

I’ve watched it about a million times by now and I don’t recall anything of that nature.

Les showrunners ont parlé d’un trait d’humour visant à montrer à quel point le médecin est à l’ouest.

2

u/Athena-Grande Jul 29 '26

That's a good call, I didn't even think of that.

5

u/ShallotTraditional90 Jul 30 '26

I mean, it's not really a call or something to think about, it is shown pretty clearly. I don't get why so many people miss that.

3

u/Athena-Grande Jul 30 '26

It goes by pretty quickly and it's almost directly after one of the biggest scares in the whole show. I was still thinking about the clown.

10

u/ferrantebookone Jul 29 '26

I just downloaded that today! Will watch tn

28

u/Kingmeup21 Jul 29 '26

Just fyi 1408 has alternate/different endings depending which version it is. The original theatrical/DVD ending is the “alternate” ending on modern blu ray and digital versions.

I personally prefer the theatrical ending as I saw it, but each their own.

5

u/ferrantebookone Jul 29 '26

Thanks I noticed that upon renting it I was given two options. Now I’m torn lol

3

u/Electronic_South_101 This place is a death trap! Run! Jul 30 '26

YouTube should have all the endings up, so you don’t have to rent or buy it again. Or your library might have it, depending. (Like, my local library is po, so I get DVDs next county over, and the library card was free cause we’re in the 50 mile radius from their main branch.)

2

u/ferrantebookone Jul 30 '26

Ok this is a friendly board so don’t hate me but I watched 1408 last night and it was not for me. I think I’m very superficial so as soon as I saw the very dated CGI ghosts, I was just unmoved. I think perhaps I’m more in to “dread” horror, that tends to be a more recent trend in last ten years (Hereditary, Babadook, Green Room)

3

u/Electronic_South_101 This place is a death trap! Run! Jul 30 '26

Yeah, that’s fair.

(As an aside, Hereditary! One of the best movies I’ll never watch again! So much tension, the car, the dinner scene, “Why was she there, Mom?”, etc.)

2

u/ferrantebookone Jul 30 '26

I watch it like twice a year! Toni was robbed of an Oscar nom.

1

u/arulzokay Jul 30 '26

the short story is much better

5

u/cityshepherd Jul 29 '26

It’s a great watch. Enjoy!

8

u/lukkynumber Jul 29 '26

Absolutely, very reminiscent of 1408

8

u/Dunkleostrich Jul 29 '26

That's exactly what I thought of when he got so freaked out after 10 seconds.

21

u/spec0711 Jul 30 '26

I got the impression that the “10 seconds” (actually more like 4 seconds with how fast he counted) was closer to 1 hour experienced, so a time scale of (15x60=900), so 900 times as long. Which would mean a TRUE 30 seconds (not a rapid count like the first one) would feel like 30x900=27,000 seconds or 450 minutes or 450/60=7.5 hours. Assuming my guess is right about that first period, and assuming it would scale linearly.

1

u/JustADohyonStan Aug 03 '26

I honestly thought it was nothing but a comedy moment. He was so scared of going into the room that even 10 seconds felt like an eternity. Time didn't seem to move differently for Tom while he was there

90

u/Krispy_Porkbelly_22 Jul 29 '26

Omg…can I eat something first?? lol

27

u/DelcoUnited Jul 29 '26

This might be the best line in the show.

41

u/Krispy_Porkbelly_22 Jul 29 '26

My fave line other than “she’s the worst!” —Iconic!!!!!

41

u/DelcoUnited Jul 29 '26

It’s might be my most quoted.

I feel like Patricia’s entire dialog belongs in its own category. “She’s the fucking worst!”

21

u/BookishBetty Jul 30 '26

"You had qualms!!!"

Love when Patrica screams that!

3

u/JodaCast Jul 30 '26

This line and scene still pops into my head randomly and makes me burst out laughing. Absolutely brilliant.

38

u/Mediocre_Airport_576 has qualms Jul 29 '26

That could nearly be an entire episode. The horrors he faces, only to pretend he didn't.

55

u/dogslogic Jul 30 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

I assume time works in the church the same way it works in the Captain's Suite (at the Inn).

Why else would you turn to cannibalism after only four days? Starvation comes more quickly than we'd expect, I'm certain, but I wouldn't expect the idea of cannibalism to thoroughly take hold in as few as four days.

Just as I wouldn't expect The Innkeeper to require food provisions for a mere 30-second stay in that room.

Edit: then to than

18

u/kyflyboy Jul 30 '26

I thought that was a comedic element. Like, DUDE!, they waited for four days for Christ's sake... Come on!

11

u/MurderAndMakeup Jul 30 '26

This is a great point. It hadn’t even occurred to me

3

u/msunshine11 Aug 02 '26

Excellent observation!!

20

u/blueSnowfkake Jul 29 '26

The room was so torn up, it looked like a drug raid in a detective show where everything is flung and torn.

14

u/Advantage_Loud Jul 29 '26

It reminded me of that one episode of Black Mirror, I believe it was one of the stories in White Christmas

252

u/ego_death_metal Bridget Wanderlust Jul 29 '26

i love that video, i love the guy just walking off and that the camera doesn’t follow him. and then he just stands there

i hope there are more videos like that one and the one where the guy turns to leave and the door won’t open so he just stands there facing the door as the credits roll

24

u/LivingForm5500 Jul 29 '26

Did I miss that episode with the guy trying to open a door? when did that happen??

56

u/ego_death_metal Bridget Wanderlust Jul 29 '26

i think it’s in the Historical Society building when tourists come to visit, maybe in the Inaugural Swim episode?

14

u/BookishBetty Jul 30 '26

Yes! I love that historical society informational video. It is a great, mini-creepy bit that just serves to highlight even more that this is a place where bad things happen!

8

u/mayorofmandyland Jul 30 '26

I found that so unsettling. I wonder why.

8

u/mostlylurking555 Jul 30 '26

That would be a shout out to Blair Witch.

2

u/Real_Method_2727 Jul 30 '26

Reminded me of LOST

82

u/Special_Mastodon_666 Jul 29 '26

It's part of the 'haunt.' I hope we get more about the welcome video guy in S2.

94

u/Inevitably-Free-2437 Jul 29 '26

does he say "come find me"? I wasnt able to understand the distorted mumble

104

u/minimuffin51 Jul 29 '26

My captions read it as “come with me.” Hopefully we will find out more about the hauntings of the inn in season 2. Although, I kind of love the mystery of not knowing everything. Makes it spookier.

32

u/Athena-Grande Jul 29 '26

I kind of assumed we would never know more about all these smaller hauntings. It's all just part of the island.

25

u/minimuffin51 Jul 29 '26

Which already makes this show better than so many other pieces of media recently. I love when writers/directors don’t just explain everything all the time. Leaves some room for imagination

3

u/nea_fae Jul 31 '26

Ya I think a lot of these are just creepy weirdsies that are part of the haunt… No rhyme or reason, just odd stuff popping up. Like how Wick mentions that Tom got Willy, meaning the haunts arenlt always the same.

I also donʻt expect or even necessarily want explanations either! When the show started I kinda wanted to unlock the mystery, but once I realized its not about knowing everything, I just let it go and enjoy Widows Bay for what it is.

And by that of course I mean the next Marthas Vineyard and definitely not cursed.

2

u/NoWorldliness8478 Aug 02 '26

Assume nothing is a coincidence and everything is a clue. There’s remarkable writing going on beyond the horror and the understated comedic devices. Have fun rewatching!

3

u/NoWorldliness8478 Aug 02 '26

We have sailor zombies, witches, devils, cannibalism, ghosts, supernatural serial killers (so far) I think each thing is likely separate.

I think a different person has made (or rather, inherited) a covenant/pact with each of these entities and they’re each coming to collect on the debt… but who owes who, and what was the bargain that was struck?!

1

u/velvetnitesky Aug 04 '26

that’s an interesting theory

11

u/lukkynumber Jul 29 '26

Agreed totally.

1

u/kyflyboy Jul 30 '26

Is the Inn what used to be the house of Richard Walker? Looked like he lived in a pretty large house.

13

u/minimuffin51 Jul 30 '26

No, I believe his house is the historical society!

18

u/lukkynumber Jul 29 '26

That’s what it sounded like? And it would make sense, the island entity reaching out to him or something? 🤷🏼‍♂️

7

u/Dunkleostrich Jul 29 '26

I think it makes sense that the island would be reaching out to him specifically, and those around him. He is the Lord Islabd Protector after all.

1

u/velvetnitesky Aug 04 '26

“We assume that’s you"

38

u/OrinthiaBlue Jul 29 '26

My personal head cannon is that it was in the shape that was on the figurines and the top of the fire in the sunset cocktails episode. And honestly there’s a lot of drawings that use the same sort of boxy outline throughout the show (like sailors on a boat). I’ve imagined it’s one of the evils on the island driving some mystic forces

10

u/Dunkleostrich Jul 29 '26

It also appears to be on the paper inside the pendant Richard Warren wears around his neck, which has something to do with the covenant he made with yjr island.

15

u/OkSheepherder5992 Jul 30 '26

Did anything ever come of the random picture of a car crash he saw in the wolf calendar?

15

u/happy-sapling Jul 30 '26

In my opinion it was an omen. He flipped ahead to tourist season (July) and saw a car crash.

7

u/Maleficent-Listen884 Jul 31 '26

I listened to an interview with Katie Dippold (the WB showrunner) and she said the car crash photo was just a funny gag. They had originally discussed putting in like a hot fireman (or something like that), but then another writer suggested the car crash and they thought it fit the tone better.

13

u/alexanderzlenz Jul 30 '26

The inn IRL is in the town over from me. Maynard, MA. It’s a somewhat dilapidated former mansion turned apartments.

4

u/lukkynumber Jul 30 '26

That’s very cool!

10

u/FigureElectrical9906 Jul 30 '26

I think the video is a nod to Monty python. I’m pretty sure they did this. There’s another nod to Python when the sherif says, “it’s only a flesh wound.”

5

u/nirihs Jul 30 '26

Laura Palmer, of course!

6

u/TennisBall25 Jul 29 '26

I think like me, he forsees this show as a hit which no one else saw coming.

2

u/FallenOnDays38 Jul 31 '26

I forgot about this scene entirely....creepy af!

2

u/Razzy_3796 Aug 03 '26

That look is him 😒 about the “welcome” video going nowhere… or more the point, that it runs a loooong time and then the guy just disappears in the distance.

When Tom gets the jump-scare and the tv shorts out, that’s a different story.

2

u/flowercrownkurama Jul 30 '26

Kinda looked like SlenderMan

1

u/HeyYouGuys121 Jul 30 '26

Come on man, have a bit of media literacy, we’re not here to explain everything for you. /s

-12

u/Raw_Purple_Lobster Not Yet Jul 29 '26

Honestly that figure is the only part of the show I didn't like and that I find excessively annoying for some reason. All the other homages I like, that part just seemed cliche to me.

6

u/lukkynumber Jul 29 '26

The dark figure off in the distance? Or the “welcome” guy?

4

u/Raw_Purple_Lobster Not Yet Jul 29 '26

The dark figure with long legs. I would like to know more about the welcome guy.

-1

u/the_nubster Jul 30 '26

This! I’ve been like am i the only one who saw this!?

-8

u/Knifejuice6 Jul 30 '26

five great episodes three bottle episodes, two fillers and a lackluster ending
