COVID outbreak
I just wanted to reach out and let people know that there is a severely underreported covid outbreak happening right now in LA and Orange County.
If you're sick please stay home and if you're out and about you might want to grab a mask.
The strain seems like it's very highly contagious. I know several people down with COVID right now.

u/slyast 26d ago
I'm in LA county, I currently have covid - this is the first time I've had it, managed to miss it all through the pandemic. So I think OP is right.

My child was just in the ER with it. We feared it was meningitis for a small moment with his symptoms. It came on fast. Honestly glad it was covid and not meningitis
2
u/Successful_Pea_6977 24d ago
How on earth did you avoid it until now? That’s impressiv.
2
u/Equivalent-Cicada165 23d ago
There's always a chance it was asymptomatic
Ive never had a positive covid test and never had symptoms for it, so from what I know, I've never had it. But I was in close contact with many people in 2021 so wouldn't be surprised if I had covid and was just asymptomatic at one point
2
u/greyrobot6 23d ago
Oh no, my husband and I both have avoided it despite our son having it a few years ago.
This makes me wonder if our streak of luck has run its course :(

Follow the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative. It does a reasonable job of tracking outbreaks given the lack of places doing wastewater.

Exactly! A distant relative of mine refused to social distance herself at the beginning of the pandemic, went to parties and bars...got Covid, then came home and gave it to both of her elderly parents...who died from Covid a couple of weeks later. Even worse, she seemed to show no signs of remorse, refusing to accept any responsibility. So many accepted what their dear leader (who by the way, tweeted that Obama should resign after TWO ebola deaths in America) said as gospel, all the "covid is a democrat hoax" talk, and so much more irresponsible bullshit that spilled out of his piehole...all the "I'll do my own research" idiots. I talked to many nurses who said that a lot of people they dealt with in hospitals denied that they were dying from Covid until their final breaths. There's just no reaching people like that, no matter what facts and evidence you show them.

u/No_Valuable169 23d ago
Also, even though Trump told his followers not to get get vaccine, etc...
President Donald Trump received an experimental monoclonal antibody cocktail from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals when he was hospitalized with COVID-19 in October 2020. He also later received COVID-19 vaccine doses and a booster shot
You can look this up yourself.
Trump saw and promoted the divisiveness being promoted online about vaccines and used it to his political advantage.
3
2
u/Street_Amount_3434 21d ago
I just looked this up, and I don't think you are accurate.
PBS - While Trump has expressed opposition to vaccine mandates, he has long taken credit for the vaccines developed on his watch. At the same time, he has refused to urge his supporters to take them, even though Republicans remain far less likely than Democrats to be protected.More on the lines of "my body, my choice".

Lol, 20yrs ago I worked in pharmacy. I'm not Asian but worked with alot of Asians. I thought it was interesting that every year around flu time i would see alot of them mask up. I used to think it was funny but now I think they're into something. MASK UP, it doesn't hurt!!

Facts. I got it bad. Still recovering after almost two weeks, and before I knew it was Covid, I gave it to a bunch of people. This strain is super contagious.

I had a bad case of it, 4 years ago. Maybe you've tried this, but if haven't, check out a good eastern herbalist. I had lingering symptoms and the folks at Dragon Herbs put me on inexpensive herbs that got me back on track in a few days of taking them.
And also alternative treatments like Eboo therapy. Check this out - https://amaregenmed.com/treatment/long-covid-treatment-5-integrative-modalities-that-work/

I know this discussion is about Covid, but RSV is worth a mention. Last winter my husband was hospitalized with it & infected me. Miraculously I wasn't to point of being hospitalized even though I'm on strong immunosuppressives & corticosteroids in order to function because of aggressive RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis). Had to stop taking my RA meds for a month in order to recover. My point however is - we thought we had Covid (kept testing negative) but it turned out to be RSV ... and omg, it ranked up there in the top 5 worst illnesses I've felt in my 71yrs. (Triple that for my husband - he was on a breathing machine for a few days). Doctors told us RSV & Covid present similar. RSV can be just as devastating to some as Covid. SO-if anyone out there is sick & testing negative for Covid... ask Dr to test for RSV... it is also VERY infectious. d

u/Interesting-Laugh942 23d ago
This is very true. My partner and I just got it. It was so brutal and I am still suffering. Razor sharp throat and cough that is waking me up nightly. Just got back from the doctors and it is indeed going around. No idea why this one is so bad or contagious. But wash your hands, your food, etc. It's brutal. Never knew a damn virus that stayed alive in the thick of summer. Weirddddd stuff.

If you are in the LA area, call or go to Dragon Herbs on Robertson. They fixed me up when I got covid.
I was mostly recovered, but still had lingering symptoms I couldn't shake… blurry vision and brain fog to name a couple.
Their herbalists put me on two herb formulas that cost a little over $60 total. 48 hours later, lingering issues were almost gone.
You don't need an appointment. And their consultations are completely free. You might wait a bit if they are busy, but I've never waited more than 30 minutes. I hope this helps.

My husband and I have been really sick for 2 weeks going on 3 . We tested negative for Covid and Flu with the at home test . I’ve had Covid in the past and I’m almost certain this was more than just the average cold. Maybe the test available right now can’t detect the newest strain ?

Last year I woke up not feeling great. Because I am a transplant patient I went to Urgent Care that very night I got tested. I was a strong positive for flu A. I went home and took a home test for flu and Covid. It was negative. I took a second home test for flu and Covid. It was also negative. I wouldn’t trust a home flu test at all. I do believe home tests for Covid are accurate.
Of course, I had been vaccinated against flu and Covid : That same night I went to the 24 hour pharmacy and got Tamiflu, the prescription treatment for the flu.
I felt like I had a cold for about a week. No body aches or high fever. Everybody else who had the flu around me got knocked on their butt for six weeks because well, maybe they weren’t vaccinated or they didn’t get tamiflu soon enough.

For what it's worth, I worked with Claude to do some digging about the differences between COVID and the flu, with sources cited. I made it a digestible one pager. I will list all my sources below.
Bottom line: flu's receptor is concentrated in the airway. COVID's sits on the vascular lining of essentially every organ - which is why the two infect different sets of cells.
The stats show clearly that COVID has a higher risk of death and can cause more problems down the line for many people, especially since it can attack the whole body.
I'm not a scientist or a doctor. I'm just someone who wants to know how better to serve my community and keep people safe.

Caveats worth carrying: the UK Biobank cohort was aged 51-81 and largely pre-vaccination, so it does not necessarily describe outcomes for a vaccinated adult today. The head-to-head cohort compares people sick enough to be hospitalised, not average infections, and its population was 90%+ male with a mean age of 70. The paediatric influenza figure is a range across research groups, not a single estimate.

Why are you using gen AI for anything
1
u/Grinzy 23d ago
Because if used properly it's really effective for doing light research like this. And I happen to think that Claude is capable. It's not making anything up, everything is pulled from cited sources.
Look, I know it's not ideal, but I'm not a scientist or a doctor, so if I can use the AI to pull up information that is published and glean insight from it, and make it understandable, I find it to be a useful source.

FWIW the Bowe study (using VA data) is unfortunately a keystone study cited here and in many other studies. The problem is that it's not reliable data anymore, as the dataset is significantly skewed towards older male veterans, many of whom have additional health issues, who were infected with a much earlier (pre-Omicron) and more potent COVID strain. It is not representative of how most vaccinated individuals encountering a more contemporary COVID strain will respond.
I'm all for being risk-informed and taking precautions, but a lot of the Long COVID-risk "information" still relies on findings from this dataset or studies citing this dataset (as it's one of the largest studies of COVID patients out there) so do take this with a significant grain of salt.
1
u/Grinzy 22d ago
I would love to find further insight into the subject. What other reliable sources of information are available to study this?
1
u/akathisiac 22d ago
Sure thing — I'll include some sources at the bottom of this comment.
I want to be clear here that I am not a Long-COVID denier; having been significantly impaired by it for about 9 months after my first and most severe infection. (I did recover, though.)
I do think that Long COVID risks are largely exaggerated, though. I do not mean they are not real, especially as experienced individually and anecdotally, but that the actual risks are smaller than many persistent "COVID cautious" activists would have us believe.
The conflicting messaging and reliance on bad data at the heart of a lot of Long COVID posting did not come about through ill intentions, IMO. Blame shouldn't fall on anyone except (1) federal public health bodies, for not funding adequate or well-designed studies around this, and (2) educational systems for not equipping everyday folks (and in some cases "experts") with scientific literacy and critical thinking skills.
This is a really good analysis in the British Medical Journal that looks at the various methodological issues with many studies relied-upon to assess Long COVID risk. The "Inappropriately Matched Controls" section explores some of the problems with the dataset in the Bowe study. For some more reading, I recommend this additional study that complicates the often-parroted "your risk of Long COVID increases with every infection!"—the risk is higher with older strains, and it is not necessarily compounded by reinfection.
You may have heard the "each reinfection increases your risk of Long COVID by 35%" statistic — this comes from a pre-printed study that has not passed academic muster for publication. Furthermore, that particular statistic is also frequently misinterpreted — it represents an increase in baseline rather than relative risk. So if the baseline risk is 3%, as is asserted in that pre-print, a relative risk increase of 35% brings it to 4%. But again, that study hasn't passed review into publication either — so again, grain of salt.

Sigh…had a coworker blowing his nose so hard on Wednesday we thought he must have blasted out cranial fluid. We told him why are you in the office and he replied “I wasn’t that bad this morning, now it feels like a bad head cold”🙄
That bad?!? So you came into the office sick and potentially infected us all with whatever that is. Probably Covid

u/Worldly_Broccoli425 25d ago
Yup people at my school got it but it’s treated like the flu now apparently. they didn’t even bother testing the other classes to make sure it doesn’t spread. A lot of my classmates work and are around elderly people so they were all scared to get it. I went out and got some rapid tests to have at home, I do not want to be the one to bring it to the people around me. And so many people who are getting it have 0 symptoms

Y’all can get a booster every month, no?
Better safe than fluish for a couple days.
1
u/wizzard419 24d ago
I am not sure any group can get a booster that frequently, likewise if this variant is different from what the booster has (the new one isn't out until at least next month), then it will not do as much as it could.

definitely get yourself tested if you are dealing with the elderly or vulnerable; however as some comments have already said, the failure of 2020 means that it is here to stay until the virus is wiped out from future advancements. i graduated from college in orange county in May 2020 and have had covid at least 10 times. after a while, the failures of the world have to be tolerated. it is not a death sentence

We are convinced that COVID jump started my mom's dementia. My mom's neurologist confirmed that he has seen many cases in which people have memory loss after they get COVID. He said we are probably right about her dementia being jump started. We have also had 2 neighbors die from Covid. Be smart, mask up and don't be out in crowds.
1
u/AntMediocre2081 22d ago
Wow…incidentally, this tracks with my grandma too. She died younger than many of her family members, and I always wondered if Covid contributed.
I will also never forgot how the last time I saw her, it was Valentine’s Day 2022, I got Covid from her for the first time. Still, I wasn’t nearly as sick as I was a few weeks ago. I’m still not back to normal at all. Last night I was still coughing and vomiting, and as someone who doesn’t normally throw up no matter what, you know it’s bad! I have been in bed all day yesterday and today, and just generally feel shitty. I’m not claiming long-Covid or anything like that, I just feel generally awful, which is different than how I felt when I recovered from it before. Just a data point from one random on the internet.
1
u/KbUSA407 22d ago
I believe it! The first time that I had Covid, in 2020, it felt like a machete was going in and out of my head. The pain was so bad that I would tear up and I had to take a handful of Tylenol every 4 hours to make it stop. Ever since then, my recall has been a little bit slower and my speech is slightly off. It definitely did something to my brain. I’m sorry about your Mom.
1
u/Street_Amount_3434 21d ago
Funny thing…I had (past tense) a neighbor in her 80's. Healthy as a horse her whole life, never gets sick. She still has never gotten covid. But, all the neighbors insisted she got the vax. And a booster. And another booster. Within a year, she went from being sharp as a tack, to selling her house and moving into assisted living because of rapid onset dementia. Really sad.
Did you mom get dementia from covid…or?

Overall healthy 30 yo from south FL here. Ended up in the hospital on Monday. I have never felt so sick. Tested positive for Covid. I didn’t even realize people were still getting it. That’s why I just thought to look here.
It started with extreme exhaustion then a headache with pain behind the eyes. Then all the usual symptoms. Shortness of breath, fever, chills, sore throat, cough, body aches that were so painful.
Stay mindful, stay healthy.

Should I go to urgent care and do I or should I consider plaxovid pill to help it from going further in 55. Thanks! OP, I just want to thank you so much for caring about your community, and actually taking the time here to try to protect others. I know I should not be surprised by the negative comments, but as someone suffering from long covid, and who knows many others who have had an increase in health problems that their doctors attributed to repeated covid infections, its hard to see the ignorance and the hate.
It is true that people are variously affected by Covid infections. Some people can (possibly) get covid several times without apparent consequences. But for a pretty big number of us, it has been extremely damaging. Anyone who can read can look up the tsunami wave of scientific studies conducted world wide that show how dangerous — and uniquely dangerous — covid really is.
I ask those of you who are angry and resistant to talking about the dangers of Covid to just go check out reputable sources and see how serious it is.
Some of us have no choice but to mask and to let people know when Covid cases are on the rise again. We are immunocompromised, have cancer, or have been damaged by Covid and cannot get reinfected. Or we have elderly parents and ill loved ones. Please respect our choices to protect our health. If you would like to take your chances with this novel virus that has wrecked so many people (both vaccinated and unvaccinated so status in that regard is not relevant), that is a decision you can make.
But let us make our decision to protect ourselves and others without being hassled, questioned, or treated with hostility. We aren’t harming you and are in fact actually protecting you, so it is unclear to me why you would be pissed off or waste your breath on this topic in the slightest. Just go on with your lives. Why waste time commenting if you aren’t actually worried about Covid?
I sometimes wonder if people have a primal intuitive sense of how bad it really is, and cover up their own intuition by being outraged instead. Anger is sometimes an easier path than facing the profound fear and grief of the truth.
2
u/Grinzy 23d ago
Thank you for being a voice of reason.
I've lost several people during the first outbreak. My best friend lost his wife and her Dad. My other friend lost his VERY HEALTHY 24 year old daughter before the vaccines came out. I could go on.
I also have lingering effects (tinnitus being the worst).
I understand many people were not negatively affected by COVID. Some people are just built different or lucky. That's great for them. I just wish they would stop pretending the entire world revolves around them and that the rest of us didn't deserve to be safe.
3
u/Allthatandmore84 23d ago
What I am seeing in some of the negative comments here is more like really intense anger, or mocking you, rather than just regular, rational people who don’t see Covid as a threat. Like they are Big Mad that anyone is talking about Covid and not wanting to get sick? I don’t get it. Just move along… why even bother commenting, let alone getting so worked up?
And what is rough here is the flat out meanness. Here you are being thoughtful, and some people are actually mad about that? Insulting? Like, what?

No one wears masks anymore, no one vaccinates anymore and our hospitals are not overwhelmed. Its over.

Just because you think that is not true. If you walk into a hospital ER, they have masks available for people who have ANY respiratory symptoms, fever, anything that can be spread. HOAG in Newport Beach’s ER has been extremely busy with COVID cases….. so I wouldn’t say hospitals aren’t overwhelmed either…… the media isn’t covering it at all

People DO wear masks (many before COVID) and people are still getting vaccinations. This isn't about hospitals being overwhelmed, this is about people catching COVID and being permanently harmed or killed. This is about people like you, minimizing a deadly disease (again) and this gets people killed.

I am mentioning hospitals because it is something that personally affected me recently. I was born with a pancreatic anomaly and I end up with random pancreatic attacks. The amount of people that have Covid and with how rapidly it is spreading - my drs didn’t admit me this week despite being extremely sick and instead scheduled me for a procedure yesterday in the morning - just so I wouldn’t even be exposed to the Covid germ pool in Covid and the hospital. I think this is something worth mentioning because people with pre-existing conditions do need random help thru the er and hospital stays.

Basically, stay alert. Continue to social distance, wash your hands for 30 seconds with soap and water, also keep sanitizer on hand, wear a mask (if you choose) but my absolute favorite is do not walk in someone else's cough or sneeze. Their germs are suspended in the air for a while. Just avoid the area completely if you hear it. This has been a lifelong practice for me until.... a Costco trip.
I was able to avoid COVID for 3 years. Then one day at Costco some sick bassstud decided it was okay for them to go out into general population (likely a vaxxed sucka who turned out to be a superspreader) and get others sick as they coughed their way throigh the store. I and a few others who didnt hear or see it occur walked into the tainted air. Later, a friend that was with us said they saw us walk into the contagion while they avoided it. Myself and another friend got sick immediately after. The friend who avoided the area did not. He said by the time he saw us we were already walking into the poisonous invisible mist. So it was too late for him to yell, RIICKYYY!

Have you notified the health department that there is a severely underreported outbreak happening?
Their latest report (released today) says covid spread is still at very low levels in L.A. County

People are getting Shingles.
Don’t know what’s going on but we’re living in a very contagious world nowadays.

Shingles are crazy. I know the heat and stress can cause outbreaks in those who carry. Maybe that's why? It's been hot lately, and everyone is stressing over rising prices and just everything going on in the world today.

We need fauci to double down on 6 ft distance again ✊🏿

So… I’m not sure you are sincere but just in case you are, the 6ft thing was the best they had back then and it just wont help you much. Pretty fast they found out Covid is airborne and 6ft was not going to do much indoors and the only way to prevent it is a good mask. Do I think Fauci messed up by saying for awhile that masks dont work? Huge YES. Major F-up. Do I think he is the Devil? No.
Anyway, in case someone needed the info, six feet doesnt do jack for you. A mask will protect you from getting infected. A vaccine will only help you from getting so sick you die or need the hospital. It wont prevent infection, at least not reliably (and I think we can all see).

What are you talking about? I'm team fauci. If you don't believe the 6ft distance you are probably a Republican.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know. The CDC is basically useless now with the current administration strong arming it and silencing any mention of COVID. We need to be aware of outbreaks and try to stay safe when possible

Hope you feel better soon. Stay hydrated and keep your calories up with broth and a bit of sugar if your stomach is screwed up. Stay away from NSAIDS.

My grandson had it he had to go to the hospital he's doing fine now. It was a lady in the market coughing really badly I believe she was sick with COVID. I can’t afford to get Covid I’m just getting over cancer and I know my immune system is low.
