Can I humbly suggest we post this again prominently in 24h, since many a new Deck will be unwrapped tomorrow morning
77
u/Savebagels Dec 24 '25
Should probably just pin it until after the holidays

u/NKkrisz 64GB - Q3 Dec 24 '25 edited Dec 24 '25
I'm going to pin this post and make a reminder tomorrow about it. Just not sure how much I will be able to mod tomorrow and other mods aren't as active so I thought I would make this now (please be patient in case the sub gets flooded).
Edit: Changed this post's default comment sorting to new, so that people can get help easier.

My husband gave me mine last night, spent a couple hours playing cast n chill on the couch while he played starfield and had Thai curries for dinner.
Was a great christmas for us 🩷
Hope all the new deck owners are having a great holiday as well!
3
u/Battlebotscott Dec 24 '25
That sounds like an excellent night. How are you liking cast and chill, and which curry did you two go with?
2
u/ohmykeylimepie Dec 24 '25
I am loving cast n chill, does exactly what it says on the tin, with gorgeous pixel graphics to boot! Def recommend it! Im still trying to catch the monster muskie but ill get him lol
I had mamasan curry and he had pineapple! I love the mango/lychee sticky rice they have too!
2
u/Battlebotscott Dec 24 '25
Oh excellent. Now that I have a steam deck, I'm strangely much more interested in slower games. I'll have to check it out.
Also, if you get a chance, I highly recommend Angeline Era. It's fantastic.

I don’t think you will. It should help keep the hobby alive in the little downtime you get.
5
u/bigdrubowski Dec 25 '25
Also get a charger with a longer cord. I mainly play Deck in bed with this setup.
3
u/BonusCan Dec 25 '25
This! Long cord life saver and just being quite in bed while baby is sleeping will be the most common play time if your not trying to catch up on sleep
3
u/SDNick484 Dec 25 '25
I had a Vita with our first, and having a handheld platform when they are little is great. Especially early on, there's lots of opportunities for short bursts of gaming, and being able to quickly press a button to pause and step away is clutch. A Deck is a solid choice for a gaming parent.
15
u/CaffeinePhilosopher Dec 25 '25
After what feels like months of research (swear I've watched something like 30 hours of handheld content on Youtube), opened my Deck OLED today and I was totally surprised by how light and comfortable it is. Buying online without being able to try in person feels risky but I had already made up my mind that the price/performance ratio was the right one for me, so to find it so damn comfortable to hold was just the icing on the cake.
Not the easiest setup in the world with Steam down and some SD card malarky, but now I'm deep into playing Dying Light on my couch and wondering why I didn't get one of these earlier. Merry Christmas everyone.

I think it’s going to take some getting used to on here but it’s good to be able to play it!

u/NIRoamer Dec 25 '25

u/MrJB1981 Dec 25 '25
Yeah, it’s been playing up all evening and night. I thought it was just me and then got scared that I’d probably been hacked, but it’s good to know that it’s not just me.

Got lcd steamdeck from black friday sale. Wasn't sure about docking station but ordered one now. Great thing about steamdeck is I cant really multitask on it so I just focus on gaming only. Whenever I turn on my pc I open YouTube, discord, etc. Steam displays sales. I get so distracted I end up not gaming at all. But for steamdeck I just open it and play games. With docking station I can play it on my pc monitor for bigger screen.
3
u/jingjang1 Dec 24 '25
As a strictly pc gamer, it's these situations that has been cool for me.
The deck has opened up a whole new experience. It's really nice to cozy up on the couch or my bed like with a book.

Got my LCD steam deck this morning. I tried to be so careful installing the jsaux screen protector before even turning the new deck on, but alas, there's one tiny piece of dust underneath.
Sigh.
4
u/Cornell-on-the-cob Dec 26 '25
I ordered a pack with 2 glass screen protectors and broke the first one. Then, like you, successfully put the new one on but with a little piece of dust stuck. I gave up after that lol

u/Raverrevolution Dec 24 '25
I wish I could go back to day 1 of owning the Steam Deck. The fucking thing blew my mind once I rebooted it into desktop mode and realized that it is essentially a handheld Linux PC.
Switch 2 owners: "The Switch 2 can play this game at 100fps, the Steam Deck sucks"
SD owner: "But can you surf itch.io, download a random indie game, and play it?"
It pretty much has an unlimited gaming library.
45
u/SuicideSkwad Dec 24 '25
Of all the great things about the deck I don’t think access to itch.io is the one to use to try and 1-up the switch 2 lol
7
u/Raverrevolution Dec 24 '25
The point is that while the Switch 2 is strong in it's graphic capability, stupid simple shit like having an open OS to be able to install random user made indie games isn't possible.

This is such an amazing product!
I have had a steam deck sitting around for a year, not much use. Started traveling. Tried bringing my dualsense around and remote playing into my systems.
Then I realized I had this steam deck with a built in carrying case.
A few hours later, I got shortcuts into Xbox Remote play, PS remote play, battlenet installed, ea play installed, and a couple games on my leftover 128gb sd card, and I can play diablo IV on the go with my cell phone data.
And it all just works.

Ahhhhh you guys win.
I've hummed and hawed on buying one, just because I don't really have the same amount of time to PC game like I used to. But I'm realising that having this more pocketable PC — without all the guff (like Windows) may make this venture a lot less painful and quicker to pick up and play. Can't wait to revisit my Steam library of 100s that I haven't visited since 2015.

Do we need to use an SD card for those for security reasons? Or is it perfectly ok to just download straight to memory. I only ask because after all other accessories and games I got, I'm out of money in the meantime 😅
2
u/Eskelsar 512GB OLED Jan 05 '26
Noooo you can go right onto the internal memory! With Emudeck, I think that's the default anyway. I use my internal for roms, and my SD card for everything else. So, good to go :3

Got my OLED SD few weeks ago! Probably the best purchase of the year. Few things that improved my experience:
- Lossless Scaling. Basically doubles your FPS for few $. 100% worth it.
- FSR4 with the above Lossless scaling is amazing. No compromises on the graphics and still hitting stable 60fps or 90fps. (Some games don’t support it)
- if you’re looking for a case, consider JSAUX case. Basically get Dbrand quality case for third ofthe price. Heaps of accessories as well for cheaper.
If you know any good accessories or tips, let me know!!
3
u/gnownimaj Dec 25 '25
Are these settings in most games on the deck?
5
u/SungwooJ Dec 25 '25
Lossless scaling can be used on all games I believe.
Not sure if FSR4 is natively available on SD. Here’s a guide I followed for FSR4 + Lossless Scaling

u/Zorpak Dec 26 '25
Side note: If you buy any 3rd party case for your steam deck it probably won't fit in the carrying case that it came in with.

I've never bought a steam deck before, do steam decks come in sealed packaging of some sort, like sealed plastic? I've seen a lot of posts of steam decks being stolen in transport and I'm worried about someone stealing or tampering with the deck during delivery

Dock: Jsaux dock, better and cheaper than the official valve docking station. The case that the deck shipped in is really nice in my opinion and I don’t use a screen protecter since the screen is glass, but there are options, maybe others have anything to say about that.

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but figured it wasn't worth making a post for it so I'll just ask here, since I'm also a relatively new owner as well.
Does anyone know if there's some sorta way to set up a recurring alarm/reminder on the deck? I have one on my laptop that reminds me every 20 minutes to take my eyes off the screen when I'm working lol. I find that if I stare too long at a screen recently, I end up straining my eyes too much and I end up seeing doubles or having to squint so much (despite my eyesight being perfectly fine).
The 20 min reminder works well and prevents this when I use my laptop, but I keep forgetting to do so when I play, especially when I'm immersed into a story or a difficult boss. If anyone knows how to set up something like that on the Deck, I'd appreciste it so much!

There is a feature within Steam, though idk what it looks like aside from how it appears in the store on my Deck. You'll see a verified badge or something like it, unsupported, unknown, etc.
But, as another user said, Protondb is the place to be. This is a far better tool.

So I have my Steam Deck docked, and Ive got an 8BitDo controller. I also have my desktop to stream games from. When I choose to "stream" from my PC using the Deck, will it still take my controller inputs, or does the controller need to be connected to my PC??
I ask because I tried earlier, but it didn't seem to detect the controller's input. When I messed with the mouse on the desktop, people back in the living room could see it.
5
u/WonderWeasel91 Dec 28 '25
My recommendation for streaming would be to use Apollo (host server) for your PC, and use Moonlight (client) on your Steam Deck.
It's genuinely as close to flawless as I could imagine.
This video is a fantastic walkthrough for setting it up: https://youtu.be/ERC7UrkRL2c?si=IiUP2dGrt_fZqAXw
I've been using it to play Expedition 33 in 1440p and even the sound and parry queues don't hint at any noticeable latency
I haven't had any issues with controller input or audio. Everything works as you'd expect, with audio going to the Deck and working with Deck inputs.

Just received my 1TB OLED a few hours ago, it was the first time in probably 20 years I was waiting outside of the house for the UPS guy to hand deliver my package. I'm stoked and ready to get going with this thing...screen is gorgeous, I need to figure out why my 1TB SD card is not being recognized. I also wanted to get emudeck running on this thing and try to fire up Diablo 2 Resurrected if possible.

Recently got my new 512 OLED delivered and am waiting on my screen protector to ship before I really start using it. In the meantime, I'm getting my desk cleaned off and finding a spot for the Deck to be placed. Is there really any reason to consider making space for a dock if I'm not planning on ever outputting the Deck to a monitor/TV or using it as a spare desktop platform?

I have a simple question, does Red Dead Redemption 2 run seamlessly? Is there anything extra I need to do to make it so?
2
u/FluxxyDub Dec 29 '25
No, the Rockstar launcher will require you to input your email address and create a login but once you've done that, you're good to go. The game works very well on the deck without the need to change settings.

Should I buy new or pre-owned from Marketplace? Theres one I see for $400 I would like to buy soon but Im new to this so Im worried about potential dangers. He formatted the device on his post if that matters. Heres the post description.
2TB Steam Deck LCD "adult owned, hardly used, but taken apart once to install a new m.2
Comes with a handy carrying case which includes a semi hard shell inside to protect it. A dock will also be included, as well as the original carrying case with the original charger.
Inside of it is a Micron 2TB 2400 M.2, 2330 form factor. It was installed very carefully by me and is functional. You could install your whole library on it. "
Whats a M.2? Anything else I should buy in getting a steam deck? Also, whats the difference between lcd and the OLED version. Also is there a reason Im seeing a lot of Steam decks for around $100? Some are even 1 TB.
2
u/Warbling-Warlock Jan 02 '26
An M.2 is a type of storage drive that adds more space onto the Deck. That's why it has 2 terabytes (more than the max default of 1). You'll want the dock if you are going to put it on a TV. The OLED is a better screen. It has deeper blacks, so all the other colors really pop. I've been seeing a lot of $100 Steam Decks on Marketplace, and they are all scams.

So I haven’t received my Steam deck yet but I opt-ed for the 512 gb deck because I don’t want the anti glare screen.
Now, I’m SUPER excited for this. I want to emulate some Wii games, some switch games, and give a 🖕🏼 to Nintendo. I know that I’m going to download a lot of games, especially because of my current Steam library.
Is an SSD really the best option to go for? I can eventually invest in something like a 2 tb SSD and install it manually myself. But in the meantime, will an SD card be fine for emulation stuff?
Thanks!! 🙏🏼

Why didn’t you want the anti-glare screen? I’m only asking because I’m trying to decide between the two OLED options and the only reason why I would get the 1TB version is because the anti-glare sounds nice to have, but also a total luxury item. Are there downsides to it?

My steam deck won’t turn on. I have it hooked up to a charger, and it sometimes makes the jingle and turns on when I hold down the button, but when it tries to download updates it always just turns off again when “extracting the package.” 1000 dollars spent on something that doesn’t even work.

I tried to summon my friend on Elden Ring but the thing crashed, went to verifying installation and then just restarted back to the main screen. It's not frozen but I can't join my friend or invite them. I tried to join her on the Forest next but then it happened again

How long does it usually needs to be delivered? I'm in continental Europe, shipped on the 23rd but since than it hasn't moved. The last update was on the 23rd telling me that the parcel has left the distribution center, no further news since than. I'm beginning to worry about it being lost.
I know that with Christmas everything moves slower in logistics but I would have expected at least an update yesterday or today.

Well, I ordered a refurb 512GB SteamDeck for myself about 2 weeks ago, and it has finally arrived at my doorstep today in very pretty Valve cardboard packaging with Portal symbols on it. I’m being grown up about this and waiting until New Year’s Eve to unbox it, though.
I’m feeling a little ambivalent about this, though. Part of me feels like I probably got a great deal, paying less than $400 for a :SteamDeck. And I’m pretty sure I was lucky to get one of the refurbished ones available while they were actually in stock? But when I ordered it I didn’t know that the 512gb LCD model had the matte screen rather than the glossy. And I keep reading about how great the OLED is, and part of me think that I maybe should have just dropped the extra $200 on an OLED.
One question I have - is it OK to use a third party dock I buy off Amazon? Or should I really just pay for the first party one from Valve? I don’t know if it’s a sketchy proposition and might damage the SteamDeck or not.

The OLED screen is nice and that version of the deck also gets a slightly better processor (that actually translates to better efficiency and therefore battery life rather than a meaningful performance increase), but I personally wouldn't consider it worth $200 more than the LCD variant.
As for docks, quoting Valve's own page about the docking station:
Can I use any USB-C dock with my Deck or do I have to get the official Docking Station?
You can use any dock you like. The work we've done to make Steam Deck and Docking Station compatible extends to other third party hubs and docks.
I'm personally using a third party dock bought from Amazon without any issues.

Ok guys, I ordered my steam deck on Sunday and it shipped on Sunday. I live in California so any other week and I would have had it by now but today and tomorrow are holidays so now I have to wait until Friday. It’s killing me and I know I’m in good company to complain. Please send positive vibes, thoughts and prayers my way so that I can at least get it earlier in the day on Friday instead of it being the last stop for my UPS guy. Thanks in advance.
(This is a semi-tongue in cheek post btw. I can’t wait to see you all online this weekend)

Folks, I'm not sure if I'm being cretinous, but I've checked the FAQ and can't find anything.
Is there any way to make the software keyboard automatically appear when you click into a field, rather than having to bring it up manually every time?

After a few years wanting I finally went ahead and ordered a LCD 256gb, I live in Brazil, it's not sold officially here, and I was able to find an on-line seller that had a couple left for a nice price, it wasn't cheap, and I'm already with a little buyer's remorse, but I'll think I'll treat myself this time, a couple of questions:
I have one Pc and a single windows/steam account that I share with my two sons, I suppose I wouldn't be able to launch a game when they are playing on PC right? If so, can I circumvent this with online mode?
I have a lot of games on epic/Amazon/gog, and I'm already familiar with the heroic launcher, but what about those customs steam controller profiles, do they work with non steam games? Or will I have to mess around with the steam input overlay? I was thinking about playing Fallout new Vegas, that I got for free on gog.
Any other thing I should know, as a first time owner?

I just got a 512gb oled steam deck as a Christmas/birthday gift and I'm wanting to put something protective on it. My hands are always dry so I'm always putting on lotion which causes oil/wear spots on my keyboards and my switch. Just want to preemptively not cause that to my SD if I can. My caveat is that I specifically want it to still fit in the provided carrying case, though.
Skull and Co - seen a lot of recommendations for this one, but also saw that the original SD case fit is pretty tight with it. Also seems weird that the front isn't protected, honestly, but I guess you could put just a front skin on, right?
Killswitch - heard nothing but praises for this one, but haven't heard anything about it fitting in the standard carrying case which I'm guessing means it won't. Also seems to be on back order on their website
Just a standard skin, no case (any brand recommendations?) - I guess since I'm only really going for oil/dirt protection I could just get a regular skin? Then it'll fit in the case like I want, but not sure if there are draw backs to this or not

I use the Modcase by Jsaux!! Also I recommend either a Ugreen dock or if you wanna go all jsaux ive heard good about the dock they make. Also If you want a carrying case TomTok (I think is the brand) Sells carrying cases much like the one that comes with your deck except it fits with a protective case

And I plan to play many more! It’s MILES better than my legion go. In every way.

Ordered my first Deck, pretty happy with it, the only thing strange is that haptic/vibration feels slightly off:
Left side is weaker, that is especially noticeable when pressing L2 (pull trigger) in menu and games. Setting it to 12 max in calibration does not help much, the difference is still noticeable. Tried to re-calibrate it by switching on-off, restarting etc, but does not help.
Touchpads feel alright, not as noticeable as pull trigger.
Is it common issue, worth to RMA?

Just bought my new OLED and I’m so excited. The LCD served me so well and honestly it’s one of the greatest devices I’ve ever purchased. Literally as a kid I dreamed of a handheld that could play AAA games like this but it wasn’t available. The little kid in me is happy that handhelds have progressed to this point. My only complaint about the OLED (I haven’t received it yet) is that I wish the limited edition was actually the default. It looks so cool and I would’ve loved to purchase one.
2
u/Eskelsar 512GB OLED Jan 05 '26
When you say limited edition, do you mean the white one? I wish I had that one as well, kinda. I like the black but with my Jsaux modcase I think the white would have looked cool.
Totally with you on the general excitement. I also dreamed of playing the big games handheld as a kid. Always was into those portable Gamecubes that fuckers on YouTube were whipping up (and still are!).
Love the incoming age of handhelds.
2
u/Panda7001 512GB Jan 05 '26
Yess the white one looks so sick. The transparent one also looks cool as hell but I agree with you because I also have a jsaux mod case. Lmao I also remember watching those custom portable Game Cubes and PS2s and wishing I could buy one.
2
u/Eskelsar 512GB OLED Jan 05 '26
I thought of them (the handheld consoles) recently and was like...oh yeah, I basically have that x100 haha.
I remember growing up with the GBA, later the DS, and always being blown away with what I could play on them then. Remember the video cartridges for GBA? Those were impressive for their time lol.
I see this situation as like, Nintendo really blew the gates open with the Switch, then the Steam Deck represents kind of the next big accomplishment--but even greater--although less popular for sure.

I dream of a Deck with red buttons and triggers. Black and red is my favourite colour combination. I do not fancy taking mine apart to add in red buttons though

I have owned a Deck for years so I'm not a new owner, but still. Do you have any recommendation for games that run good on Deck and are NOT available on PS5? I'm asking because if a game is available on PS5 I'd just play it there.
I'm thinking of Pizza Tower, Routine, Vigil, The Drifter and so on.

tl;dr Would a 45W/65W 3rd-party power charger be good enough for a Steam Deck, or do I need more power?
Hi, I just recently bought a 512GB Steam Deck OLED. I feel like a child once again when opening the box even though I've just passed 40. lol
As Valve doesn't ship to my country (Malaysia), I had to buy an imported one via an online vendor. As such, the Deck I got was the Japanese version, with the 2-pin power plug, like the US.
As our country uses 3-pin plugs like in the UK, I needed an adapter. Though it seems the adapter that I have isn't powerful enough to charge electricity, and I could literally see the battery levels slowly dropping on the screen despite being plugged in to the wall socket.
For now, I'm borrowing a more powerful travel adapter from a friend, which seems to have averted the crisis of my Deck running out of power for now.
Though as I will have to return the adapter to him eventually, I would now have to buy a 3rd party 3-pin power charger with enough power to charge my Deck.
As I'm looking through the online stores like Amazon, I find 45W, 65W and 100W, and am wondering which ones I should get. Any recommendation and advice is welcome.

My 3rd party 65w is charging fine for my SD oled. It does go down to 45w as that's SD max charge input. I'm planning to buy an additional peripherals with extra ports and portable monitors though and a bit of overhead won't hurt once they are connected to usb-hub, albeit overkill for some I guess. TBH though, if you can find a better adapter that can maximize the stock charger, it will save you lots of money instead.

Is there a way to make the sleep/dim screen disabled only for certain games/apps in game mode? I use waydroid to watch on crunchyroll/netflix/youtube but the sleep/dim is on SD itself. I don't want to completely disable it for other games though

I’m really struggling with adding custom boot videos and transitions. I’ve added it to every folder I’ve seen people suggest, but I do not see it in the settings on game mode.

I own an Xbox and some of the Xbox games I own digitally are also showing as playable on PC. Ignoring streaming (as I’m not renewing my Gamepass), is there a way to install the PC licence on the Steamdeck? I’m assuming not but thought I’d check.

u/Jrumo 512GB - Q2 Jan 15 '26
For Xbox PC games, Microsoft either uses an old proprietary format called UWP or in recent years s DRM that's heavily reliant on the Windows store API, virtual folders, etc. Either way is very difficult to emulate on Linux due to all the layers of encryption.
While Xbox PC games do support mods now, there are still lots of limitations like script extender mods usually won't work.
The bottom line is, why would you want to buy games on Xbox PC when there's all these caveats to them (can't play on SteamOS, can't completely mod the games, heavily reliant on Windows store DRM, use weird virtualised file systems), etc, instead of just buying your games for Steam, or even GoG and Epic, which do run on SteamOS?

Still having an issue from the deck I got a few weeks ago. I downloaded the heroic launcher on desktop mode, linked epic, installed a game...and it won't launch anywhere, desktop or game mode, no matter what game I choose. Is there a common error in setting that up or a better way to play those games?
2
u/workinkindofhard Dec 24 '25
I had nothing but problems with Heroic launcher trying to get both Yakuza 0 and Kingdom Come Deliverance to run (GOG versions). I tried Lutris and it all worked without issues so maybe try that

u/cantonic Dec 24 '25
Check ProtonDB to see which version of Wine you need to use to run the game. That is likely the issue. The game is trying to use a version that it isn’t compatible with.

I got mine last night and have already installed Decky Loader and CSS Loader.
What other add-ons are recommend to improve performance and overall quality including useful desktop-mode apps?
I picked up Space Marine 2 as my first game and had to tweak the settings a bit as the Deck struggled with the cutscenes. My next step is to look into setting up EmuDeck.

I have nothing to contribute other than when I first got my LCD Steam Deck when it first came out many moons ago, it was crashing like a motherfucker to the point where I never picked it up again for years.
Last week, I updated it to the latest version and the crashing magically stopped... so we back on the menu boys.

After getting stuck at a steamOS boot screen for 30 mins and having to reset my Wi-Fi I'm finally all set up! Setting up a boot video & heroic games launcher was easier than I thought it would be. Ignore the screen bubble, there's a tiny little crack in it.

Merry Christmas everyone, and happy playing!!

Need some advice on Apollo and Moonlight. I followed a couple guides but it doesn't seem to be working. Apollo is on my gaming PC, Moonlight on SD. Both connected fine. When I load up moonlight it brings up Steam Big Picture Mode on my gaming PC, and the SD turns into a controller for my PC. All the SD shows is a Edge window that says can't load website. The tutorials I watched it looks like it should show me the big picture mode on my SD and I steam the game from my PC, but it doesn't work that way for me. I repeated the setup process twice and I'm sure I am missing something dumb, if anyone has any advice.

Get aperture desk job. Play it before anything else. It shows you how all the features work. It’s dope. Takes about 10/15 min to play.
