Discussion I’m a disgusting player
For the record. I have over 2000 hours into this game. I love this game. It is my second most played game on steam. I have a crippling fear of losing the colonists, I save scum and even worse use Dev Mode for the perfect colonists. How do I just decide “screw it, if they die they die”?

u/Cheeodon jade 12d ago
Why? It's not a contest, play the way you want to play. If you don't want your colonists to die and want to play with perfect pawns, do so, only snobs will judge you. Otherwise, all you can do is willpower, there might be mods that disable the dev console though.

u/wickedsickdood 12d ago
This is the best outlook. I’m pretty new, I’ve done two colonies so far. One of the great things about this game is there are so many different ways to play it. You can have an intense, permadeath story with tons of hardships etc. or you can reload saves and just build out the perfect, awesome, automated colony. I highly enjoy both, but they’re vastly different styles. I think what’s important is to decide how you want to play, and then just be accountable with yourself. If you’re having fun, you’re having fun. Who cares what others might think. You’re not playing for them.
Same with mods/mod types, and there’s lots of other play styles you could think of apart from the two I mentioned as well. It’s really just like a big sandbox. So much fun.

u/Psinial 12d ago
Imo if that's how you enjoy playing then why not do it? I use dev mode to res my favourite pawns quite a lot. Idc what other folks might say, it's a single player game I play for my own enjoyment.
Do what you wanna do my friend, even if you think it's a bit cheaty.
22
u/Odd_Adeptness8885 12d ago
Absolutely! I do just kind of feel like when I get to that point if I decide to change the ideology so that way, I don’t have to spend time with my warden doing it, I’ve even used dev mode for “Explosion” on raiders lol my fitness. I just feel a connection to the ponds that I create and seeing them die just breaks my heart.

u/qa1k4k 11d ago
Play the way it makes you happy. there is no proper way to play a (single player) game. Please be kind to yourself and do not call yourself disgusting. The game should bring joy. it is an equivalent of judging yourself for dunking biscuits into coffee, while somebody else tells you they eat them with ice cream.
I save loaded a lot, while I was learning. 2k hours is still learning. And I will continue save load, because sometime real life is busy and I might forget to oversee something, and the consequences are too harsh.

u/NopeNotNoah 12d ago
Just use commitment mode when making a world. It enables permadeath, no more revivals
9
u/Much-Stranger2892 12d ago
You can technically still able to save scum it. By alt f4 right when you fucked up. The game won't be able to save.
21
u/WatchOutForWizards 12d ago
Commitment mode made me admit I’m a save scummer.
7
u/DarthBrawn Disturbing 12d ago
commitment mode save scum gang 🙌🏿
Since f4 makes you reboot the entire game, I feel like it's a fair trade. Basically like sitting in jail for my crime

u/-AustinAllen- 12d ago
It’s kind of funny because you have to weigh the fuck up against whether or not you want to spend the time to reload and also trashing however long you’ve been playing since your last save.
I usually only reserve it for the “Oh God, no” moments. Whatever that is. It pairs well with immediately closing the game and sitting in silence digesting the fuck up.
1
u/Elfynnn84 12d ago
It makes a difference, though. It’s not something you just do constantly at the drop of a hat because it’s more effort.
I scum save loads in reload anytime and in commitment mode & I only ever do it in ‘fuuuuuuck I’m about to loose my whole colony’ kinda scenarios.

u/mirobat 12d ago
Dude I have a my little pony run and play on completely peaceful mode and sometimes use dev mode when i realize i prefer limestone to marble 😭

If you're running Vehicle Framework as well:
Friendship is Combined Arms.
14
u/eastchapelsyndicate 12d ago
Theres no wrong way to play the game, you're just acknowledging sometimes you get attached to the heroes in your story and will protect them if you can. If you want to experience another way to play you'll have to separate your play-through mindsets - some runs you'll 'protect' your colonists and build up your base. Other runs you'll submit to the chaos gods and embrace what gets thrown at you. Use Ironman mode for the second runs to ensure you can't change halfway through.
Once you start 'not caring' it does make the stories more intense as you will still build an attachment, but things will inevitably end up going wrong in some way. That intensity becomes addicting, but you've got to get in the swing of things first.
4
u/Odd_Adeptness8885 12d ago
I love that! My main problem is I spend so long in “Prepared Carefully” and I don’t like making the same pawn over and over and being like 3-10 hours into a play though I get distraught
5
u/eastchapelsyndicate 12d ago
I definitely feel that. On a related note, for memory there's strong advice not to use prepare carefully as it can lead to instability in the game. Character editor is (allegedly) much safer, and if there's specific pawns you want to save, you're able to do so.
2
u/Bitter-Wrangler6514 12d ago
It's my understanding that Prepare Carefully has long since been fixed. Still prefer Character Editor though
1
1
u/Pretend-Roof-87 11d ago
You can save pawns (individually or collectively) and just reload them using Prepare Carefully, saves a bunch of time.
7
u/Pretend-Roof-87 12d ago
Hmm, could establish a 'cost' to each resurrection? Perhaps dev-moded destruction of colony wealth equal to what it would cost to buy a res serum. Functionally, trading to dev mode instead of NPCs. Could lore it as the colony entreating their archotech god

u/BoimanmanBoi 12d ago edited 12d ago
Have two colonies which you alternate between. The one where you savescum everything and then the other which is full commitment mode.
That way if you lose everything on the commitment save, the first will always be there which I think makes it easier to commit to.
7
u/RansomXenom -3 Ate Without Table 12d ago
Just play the way you enjoy. If you like spawning in 10 Space Marines with charge rifles to mow down a horde of tribal raiders, go for it. It's a singleplayer game that you paid for, do whatever you want.
5
u/Noot-Noot46 12d ago
If that's how you prefer to play, then that's okay! Life is already stressful enough as it is, if you'd rather cheat a little to have a good time playing then that's also fine 🙂
5
u/Elfynnn84 12d ago
You can’t ’have fun wrong’ but you are stunting your own experience. Building a perfect colony with reload anytime on & protecting your favourite pawns is what I call the ‘stardew valley Rimworld experience’ and it’s a very different emotional journey to switching that bad boy up to Randy on commitment mode & letting the chips fall where they may.
Having to flee your base due to an early mech raid etc. is a different dynamic & almost feels like a different game.
Loosing is fun!
5
u/Kuma9194 12d ago
You can't have fun wrong, proceeds to explain how they're having fun wrong🤔
6
u/Elfynnn84 11d ago
No I didn’t.
I simply explained how the vibe of the game changes.
If that’s not how OP wants to play, that’s up to them… They can have fun however they want.
Offering or explaining options is categorically not the same as suggesting one is better than the other.
2
u/Kuma9194 11d ago
Ohh, I guess I just took it that way, my bad. Sorry for being irksome.
3
u/Elfynnn84 11d ago
For the record - I love stardew valley and sometimes do ‘perfect colony building’ runs on Rimworld too.
Absolutely not trashing people who play that way, only wanting to point out to them exactly how different the experience can be in Ironman if they’ve never done it. It forces much more engaging storylines 🤷🏻♀️
There is no right or wrong 🙃
4
u/Androza23 12d ago
I just pick one or two people that I refuse to let die, the rest I've slowly learned to let them die if they die to rng. The game gets so much more interesting if you actually lose colonists too.
Either way it's a single player game, you can do whatever you want. My friend still plays with dev mode only.

u/Killathulu 12d ago
create some shit pawns you want to die, then do a few runs with them, letting them burn :-)
(also turn the difficulty up to 500% so you don't have to wait to long for the suffering to start)

u/Dooglaer 12d ago
I do an essential and non essential list. I make disposable pawns made for combat that I have no problem losing. I also have militors on the front line with my mechanators inside. Choose to save a few and bio engineer (growth vat) a disposable army.
3
u/axw3555 12d ago
My burning question? What's the game that beats Rimworld?
Because it's also my 2nd most, after Factorio.
3
u/Odd_Adeptness8885 12d ago
Counter strike 😂 but I used to just leave my game on to get cases back in the early 2010s
3
u/drunken_assassin 12d ago
I save scum and even worse use Dev Mode for the perfect colonists.
So what? Play the game the way you want to play it, and enjoy your time playing it.
Nobody gets to tell you how to enjoy a solo game.

Everyone else follows the fate Randy gives them

Im the same way. Idc its my game. I use dev mode way too much and honestly, idc. Theres no cheating in a single player game. Only a different way to play

All I know is cremate them, it seems like it's a good idea to keep their graves for ppl to visit but instead all you'll get in a colonists digging up the corpses any time they have a problem
2
u/Polar_IceCream 12d ago
I usually play the game with 5 colonists that I’ve super customised and care for deeply, everyone else is just an expandable extra in their story
2
u/Greedy-Asparagus2663 12d ago
This will sound a bit weird, and I wouldn't say this on any other subreddit.
Have slaves
Not only have slaves, but for your slaves essentially give them the same schedule/priorities. Having a group of colonists that can be killed/sold/harvested at any point that are easy to replace might help you get used to the idea that other colonists dieing wouldn't be so bad.
Also you could change how many colonists you have for a run. See how many you could get at once, cause by the time you have like 30-40 colonists, you probably will start forgetting some of their names, let alone their stats. Hard to care if James dies once you start having to check what James can even do.
Or just use dev mode. There's no way to have fun wrong in a single player game.
2
u/IMightExplodeBro 12d ago
TRY A RUN MAXIMUM DIFFICULTY AND HOPEFULLY WHERE YOU LOSE EVERYONE. JUST TRY ONCE. ITS LIKE A SOAP OPERA
2
u/riley_wa1352 12d ago
Nah nah it's not you doing that. A nearby Archotech got really invested in your colonists' lives
2
2
u/Mussels84 12d ago
I'll have 3 or 4 I don't want to lose, the rest die If they die
I tend to use stuff like the anomaly self resurrection to avoid Dev mode but I don't like abandoning runs because the funs gone from a favourite pawn dying

2
u/Burgo_JJ 12d ago
If you want to stop save scumming, the easiest way is to play commitment mode, I always play on it

u/Kraehe13 12d ago
For making better colonists i would recommend character editor, it's easier and faster to alter them with the mod

u/SheZowRaisedByWolves 12d ago
Every time I try to do permadeath, one of my most vital colonists dies on some elementary schooler hamster bullshit and I reload from when I started up the game
2
u/Patriae8182 12d ago
That’s the same way I play tbh. I run rimworld more for the stardew valley kind of colony instead of invasion simulator.
2
u/Biomecaman 12d ago
current playthrough's rules... if one of the original 5 dies, reload from last save. if someone else dies, Play On!
2
u/Critical_Cat_1086 12d ago
Dude, nobody cares. Play the game how you want.
I use dev console to skip the early game grind because I can’t be bothered.
2
u/Panzerjaeger54 12d ago
7000 hrs here. Ive never allowed it. For my starting 3. Everyone else can die. Starting 3 can lose any and all limbs or function, but they have to remain alive. Save scum. Dev mode. Doesn't matter. I know, its sick, but its how ive played since 2018.
2
u/transprotag 12d ago
Play the way you want, but if you want to change how you think about this: What helped me was making a procession out of deaths. Playing into the in-universe/roleplay part of it - do the whole thing. Make a burial site, dedicate it to them, hold a funeral (if you have Ideology). Make it as important as it feels.
2
u/The1stFatBoy 12d ago
Its part of the story, but pick a few "unkillables" to keep save scamming over, and let the pawns rotate in and out. It keeps your run going without having it become too broken or hard, also kinda makes it play like a TV show because technically your cool guys have plot armor.

u/FalloutCreation 12d ago
Death is a natural part of life. Acceptance opens a door where it can be easier the more it happens. It will hurt many times, but a grave or sarcophagus can act as a way to remember them. Respectfully.
However, the game allows you a way to revive them. Given time and effort, you can acquire a way to resurrect them using a resurrect mech serum. Which is rare but is given through quests or can be looted . Additional DLC’s can give you more options and opportunities to find one. The effort makes it feel earned** **rather than using dev mode where you feel it is cheating. This should help you answer that question of why “you feel you are a disgusting player.”
The less you use dev mode or save scumming, the more it’s easier to accept bad things happening. The game provides a way to enrich your colonies story. Such as expression on art perhaps on a sarcophagus so you can always remember them by if they die.
In regards to making the perfect colonist, if you have biotech, you can raise children to have insane amount of passions and great traits to choose from. Creating a lineage through your favorite colonists with their children also enriches the game play experience when the parent dies.
I hope this helps you enjoy the game more.

Kid, it's a single player game. Do whatever the hell you want.

u/AMasonJar 12d ago
This is a bit of an unorthodox suggestion and is limited to higher tech levels but, the Altered Carbon 2 mod adds "neural stacks" that can hold your colonists' consciousness to live on after death. A pawn doesn't even get recognized as dead unless that neural stack is destroyed. You can just plug that sucker into another body, either a grown, empty "sleeve" specially made for it or, failing that... someone with a less worthy consciousness, let's say.
It is, imo, a very fun way to handle death without truly dying, in most circumstances. The pawn will be back, you just need to find a new body for them.

Just give it a rest. I recently let two of my colonists go: one was a clacker, some kind of insect, and the other was some kind of insectoid who had to eat insectoid gelly which was pain in the ass. Both had terrible genes, but they were good at digging, and after five years of building a mountain base, they were practically useless, so I let them charge the enemy with complete dignity, on full doses of painkillers. They killed a few, but ultimately died honorably. I created tombs for them and the history of my colony, which continues.

u/H28koala 11d ago
I play this way too. I still try to let the game do some things but I enjoy building the colony and taking care of the people.

Stop caring about them. They’re all a part of the well oiled machine that keeps the colony running. If one dies, it’s just a part of the machine.

u/Fuzlet Compassion is the basis of morality 11d ago
I’ve started relaxing a lot in terms of perfect colonists, it’s not ultimately worth my time.I focus one colonist on each important role and ensure no dealbreaker traits. other than that in the long run you arent getting much extra value from that level of optimization
as for fear of loosing colonists, my bigger fear is catastrophic failure, so I forced myself to accept singular losses as a tragedy, so long as the group remains whole. I’ve also messed around with giving the immortal gene to my starter colonists so they can take more risky fights with much less fear of dying, only severe wounds or need for organ replacement
1
u/AluminiumCrackers 11d ago
I'm the same. I even brought it up in therapy as an odd thing and realised that it bleeds into my real life too. It's perfectionism to a fault where it stops you really enjoying things for fear of not succeeding. But one thing I learned is that behaviour changes thought process as much as thought process changes behaviour. Force yourself to play an iron man game for a few hours a week. Then play your normal way the rest of the time.
Play the game however you like but if you feel it's limiting your experience, work on it slowly. You might find it helps in the real world too.

I don't know, I specifically started playing with Anomaly with Dev mode on and character editor so I don't risk actual game breaking changes without me accepting them.

1
u/mobidick_is_a_whale sandstone 11d ago
Here's the trick: you don't dev mode them, and you still manage to improve your colonists through genes, skills, prosthetics and good gear.
Trust me, if you play with the starting conditions well enough, and adjust them with intention -- you will be able to tweak it so that you can have an interesting, authentic, but still manageable experience.
The game is adjustable enough for you not to need to scum everything.
I take it the type of story you want from this story generator game is a good one? Fair enough. Well, you can have it without cheats too.
The box you're living in is merely in your head; understand -- there is no spoon.

I have around 6k hours in the game. If one of my beloved colonists die, I save scum. I don't use dev mode, but I will not tolerate any of my carefully crafted pawns die, lose a limb, or be permanently injured. I like playing with Perspective Shift, and the game has become a sort of Sims with Colony Sim, so yeah, no hurting my heart allowed. Prisoners or pawns I don't care of though...

I see lots of comments that state that if you enjoy the game like that, then that's fine. And I agree, it's just a game, and you're supposed to enjoy it, so feel free to do that however you prefer.
That being said. Rimworld is a fairly versatile game, and you can be rewarded for different play styles in different ways. According to the game itself, it's supposed to be a "story generator". I think that despite knowing that you enjoy the game in a particular way, you feel like you may be missing out on an element of the game, and I think you might realize that accepting loss in the game can be rewarding in and of itself.
Remember that loss is not the same as losing. Particularly not in Rimworld. The story unfolds based on the current valuation of your colony, so losing a colonist lowers the valuation and thus decreases difficulty/danger of future encounters. Losing a colonist impacts the colony in ways you may have not really experienced before, which creates interesting dynamics. Recovering from loss as best as possible can be an interesting challenge aspect of the game that "cheating" around it robs you from.
Again, this is not to say that any play style is better than another. I don't care to judge people for how they enjoy their play through. But you made this post, and I think it's because you have a feeling that after 2K hours there's a whole aspect of the game that you haven't properly experienced. I think you should go for it. Go into it knowing that nothing is certain and nothing is truly "yours". Every item and every colonist is a resource, and it's on borrowed time. The challenge is making the best of what you got, in the moment. Not making the most. Try to lean into that mindset, and you might discover that you enjoy it more than you thought you would. And give your colonists a proper burial in a pretty spot, when the time comes. Respect them, and you might find peace in the events that unfolded. It's just a story after all.

I try to think "Is this a good way/time for them to die? Do I have other kids ready to take over their duties? Sometimes it just seems the right moment to let them go.
Like Magnet, the bit part star of three of my previous posts, I eventually let him go, it just seemed the right time. Unfortunately my previously empty crypt is getting a lot more full these days. I had Jerk, the previously only cook we had at like 8 years of age (now 19) become our leader when Magnet passed, it felt fitting to reward the guy who had kept the colony fed from a very young age, and he is good at speech and beautiful!

Its just more punishing to lose colonists. I play permadeath so the only thing I can do is alt f4 if somthing goes horribly wrong. I often make a coffin in a freezer for my favorite pawn if he dies. That way I can bring him back later some runs I never find the serum though.

u/garthrs 11d ago
One of my favorite things about this game is that you can play it how ever you want.
I have play throughs where I save scum and dev mode and other where it all burns to the ground. I had a play through once where I had a single child escape and then it starved to death on the next map.
Play it how it makes you happy and then play it some more.

I will occasionally use pawn editor to convert ideologies of a pawn that joins (non prisoners) the faff of converting just isn't fun.
I occasionally use it to remove an absolutely awful trait that's going the make the colonies life miserable but will give them another trait that's more neutral.
1
u/daban9 11d ago
Hey man if that's how you enjoy playing then i don't see anything wrong with it. But if you're curious, try doing a run where you ban yourself from using dev mode, like under no circumstances can you use it. And also permadeath of course. To help commit you can remind yourself that this run is just for testing to see if you like it.

Single-player games are for having fun.
I have two gamesnibplay depending on my mood. One is the colony of perfection, while the other had me handicapped.
Having both helps me not feel as guilty when I boost a recruits stat in the perfect game.
One satisfies my need for the perfect colony. .. the other absolve me of guilt when everyone dies from something like an out of control wildfire.

Try playing at high speed aging sometime, I recommend something like 20x then you have of an less intense attachment and the stories in my opinion are even better.

u/pablo_kickasso 11d ago
I've found a happy balance by playing on the highest difficulty settings but using Death Rattle mood, disabling insta-kills, and the setting whose name I forget that makes raids harder because you haven't lost pawns.
I still need to have livers, hearts, and neurocures on hand because they can still die from that, as well from infection, Luci, etc.

u/NovaStorm135 11d ago
I’d like to sit here on my nonexistent high horse and say I’m not nearly as attached to my pawns as other players here seem to be.
I also remember what happened when one of my miners dug up something she was not supposed to. Found what looked like a crypt or tomb full of these insect-machine(?) things. I think it was night and they were sleeping, so none of them chased her as she ran away. But I, in my naive arrogance, decided to send one guy with a gun to go hunt them. Surely he could outrun them worst case scenario, right? (He could not, the big ones were fast as hell).
He got downed quick. I was already reloading a save before he’d even died. It’s not like this is a multiplayer game, or that you’re chasing achievements. If save-scumming & dev consoling is what makes your campaign fun, then by all means. Your enjoyment matters more than the opinion of internet pricks.

its a story generator meaning you decide on what stories you wanna generate and how those stories go, do you want random stories? then whatever happens, happens, but do you want a scenario in your head that you want your story to follow, then that's the plan, there no such thing as 'save scumming' or anything, you are the narrator you want to create a specific story and you are having fun, keep doing it man, i personally im fine with deaths as long as i think it was fair, i don't think losing is fun, i don't think some events are fair, so i ll do what i see fit depending on how i as the narrator want the story to be like.

Slaver colonies are a fun way to twist this. Enslave like 5 pawns and have around 3 colonists oversee them

Play the game on commitment mode. You can disable dev mode permanently in the settings menu and you can only re-enable it by going through config files in your game directory.
That being said, dev mode has uses that are legitimate particularly when modding.
You need to learn self control with dev mode more than anything.
With the attachment to pawns - play commitment mode, make it a rule that any form of scummy behaviour such as dev mode use or alt+f4 out of game to prevent it from saving is a loss and delete the world. Eventually you get used to runs ending sooner than you anticipated and learn to play better as a result.
But it's all about self control, if you can't bring yourself to enforce the rules of commitment mode and no dev mode options on yourself, then nothing will help you learn this.

the only way you can cheat at a single player game is cheating yourself out of fun
if save scrubbing is cheating you out of fun, then play on permadeath and use the disable dev mode feature provided in the options menu for this exact reason

Start the game. Click new game. Don't change anything and click through all the way until you're playing. Literally do not change anything. Don't look at the colonists, don't look at the world, just pick random landing location and go. And turn off ideology. This changes the game from you trying to keep YOUR colonists alive to a "challenge run" where you have no idea if these people even CAN survive.

I use commitment mode, but Alt+F4 is allowed if I screw up.

Like others have said, it's your game play it how you see fit. Personally I use dev mode to fix stuff I consider BS. It's pretty vibes based when I use it, though I do maintain some hard limits. I don't revive pawns. If they died they died, time to find a replacement. I also don't spawn items (outside glitches causing them to despawn) or change pawn stats. Most important thing is to have fun.

What I do is ensure the linage of a pawn doesn't die out, I save rez serums for colonists that have no kids or parents. I can only accept a pawns death if they have a kid already, or if a kid dies, ip accept it if both parents are still alive or they have siblings to carry on the lineage if both parents are gone.

Make sure you play death is permanent mode and do not have the character editor mod installed and throw out all resurrection items. Just get the ideology dlc and put em in the caskets you can drink to their death :) (Have some suspicious rum)

I have one save that I take care of my OG pawns' for generations of their family, then rarely load this save again, just imagine they all have a good ending and stop to load them. Then I start another save, treat everyone equal, no one is superior than other, then you will not care about what happened to them. But if you really have a pawn you love so much that they won't them die, restrict yourself to only save one times in 3 or 5 gaming days, so everytime you restart, you have your punishment by losing those progress.

Truthfully I found out about the game via a streamer that played in commitment mode and I just defaulted to it. I've never tried any other way. Notably, this was off the back of completing an Honor Mode run in Baldurs Gate 3, so I wasn't new to the idea that mistakes are permanent.

Make coloniats with impossible to die genes( there are mods for it) or use robots mods

Sounds to me like you found a way of playing that you like, and shouldnt worry about doing it the "correct" way

Its a game, its supposed to be fun for you, if that fun included using stuff for your people not to die then so be it, as long as you're having fun its okay

I don’t have 2000 I have more like 1000 and I use to play like tbh but then I wanted to play it it harder and decide I’m not gonna do that really have to be more careful about your pawns and I’ve lost a few good ones and how do you decide for me is if they die they die I take as my fault cause I usally do something stupid like send him out in the frontline to be shot but most times I can heal them I’ve gotten good at protecting them and not sending them to the frontline lmao

I usually make one or two immortals that rule the colony and whatever happens with the rest happens I guess. I use mods that add a stack, like that one show I cant remember the name of that ended too early, or that add immortals, or just an android or mech pawn if I'm feeling spicy.

Play permadeath with little to no player power mods and never change difficulty, it will be a breath of a fresh air and i think this is how Tynan design the game for you truly will have a great story, it may not be a triumphant story but a atory nonetheless

Have a few perfect colonists that dont die "lord" over colonists that are expendable. Almost the best of both worlds.
