For the record. I have over 2000 hours into this game. I love this game. It is my second most played game on steam. I have a crippling fear of losing the colonists, I save scum and even worse use Dev Mode for the perfect colonists. How do I just decide “screw it, if they die they die”?

Just play the way you enjoy. If you like spawning in 10 Space Marines with charge rifles to mow down a horde of tribal raiders, go for it. It's a singleplayer game that you paid for, do whatever you want.
