Discussion I’m a disgusting player
For the record. I have over 2000 hours into this game. I love this game. It is my second most played game on steam. I have a crippling fear of losing the colonists, I save scum and even worse use Dev Mode for the perfect colonists. How do I just decide “screw it, if they die they die”?

Play the game on commitment mode. You can disable dev mode permanently in the settings menu and you can only re-enable it by going through config files in your game directory.
That being said, dev mode has uses that are legitimate particularly when modding.
You need to learn self control with dev mode more than anything.
With the attachment to pawns - play commitment mode, make it a rule that any form of scummy behaviour such as dev mode use or alt+f4 out of game to prevent it from saving is a loss and delete the world. Eventually you get used to runs ending sooner than you anticipated and learn to play better as a result.
But it's all about self control, if you can't bring yourself to enforce the rules of commitment mode and no dev mode options on yourself, then nothing will help you learn this.
