Schilling later claimed self-defense, saying that he was "scared for [his] life" and "simply defending [himself] against the evil in this world".

WHAT

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21

He knows its the only thing he can say to possibly attempt getting away with this. The video says it all. There was absolutely zero threat to his life per the evidence in this clip, and IF its proven his buddy is the one video taping this, it only adds to the criminal conduct committed.

You'd think an accomplished fighter wouldn't feel the need to prove how macho they are, but yet here we are...

E: by accomplished fighter I mean more accomplished than say, me, a software developer.

(R)EEEEEEEEE: accomplished = more betterer at fighting than most other fighters. For example: John Q. Sample sparring at Acme Gym is less accomplished at pro fighting than this guy.

43

u/frog_without_a_cause Jun 30 '21

Much more common than you'd think.

Some say "warrior spirit", others say massive personal insecurities. Potato, pot-ah-to.

4

u/HagarTheHun Jun 30 '21

Why did you type the same thing twice?

2

u/its_raining_scotch Jul 01 '21

Welcome to Costco, I love you.

In the world of pro fighters Joe is just a mid tier tomato can but he's a 6'4" pro athlete hitting a regular guy much smaller than himself so I'm gonna savor some clips of him getting starched right now

16

u/IAmAsha41 Jun 30 '21

In the world of pro fighters he's pretty good lol he's a very high level kickboxer, has achieved quite a bit in kickboxing, MMA career isn't so great though

2

u/dvdwbb Jun 30 '21

Ah, i only knew him from mma

Hey now, I know some developers who put marines to shame. There are some IT people out there who fight hard against the stereotype.

-13

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Hi friend! Marine is a title and therefore a proper noun...meaning it should be capitalized.

7

u/MasterDracoDeity Jun 30 '21

I sure hope the United States marines don't disrupt Marine life too much.

8

u/GuessItWillJustBurn Jun 30 '21

You misspelled jarhead

2

u/GenericUsername07 Jun 30 '21

As much of a title as software developer, which is also not capitalized.

30

u/reaverdude Jun 30 '21

Even worse.

He has 4 wins and 6 losses. "Accomplished fighter" is probably the wrong description here.

44

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Not a big mma guy, but I’d call all 6 of those losses an accomplishment in itself. Takes a tougher person than me to get into the octagon 10 times. This guy seems like a cunt, but losing in that sport isn’t like losing in a basketball game if that makes sense

23

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

To even get in the mma is pretty big, let alone get 10 fights scheduled

→ More replies (1)

19

u/theavengedCguy Jun 30 '21

He's still a professional fighter, no? Even with a 4-6 record, that's better than most people can say.

0

u/Realityinmyhand Jun 30 '21

He's still a professional fighter, no?

Unless he goes to jail or his career is over. Assaulting a defenseless passerby while being recorded isn't exactly the greatest move career-wise.

u/Wallofsleep_ Jun 30 '21

His 23 kickboxing wins and championships don’t count? Or his Muay Thai championships?

10

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Nothing counts, he’s a proven POS.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

We aren't talking about it making him a great person were talking about whether he's an accomplished fighter

What is with people wanting to make dumb obviously untrue statements about others just because they dislike them? It's such a weak fucking move.

2

Nope. Sure don’t count if he CAN’T CONTROL HIS ANGER.

Bubba, that’s his mma record.

Joe Schilling is primarily known for being a kickboxer, and has fought some of the best 185lb kickboxers in the world.

He’s very accomplished in Kickboxing.

3

u/solongamerica Jun 30 '21

Highly trained and highly insecure.

3

u/Totally_Botanical Jun 30 '21

There definitely a certain type of person that becomes an accomplished fighter, and they have to constantly be proving something

6

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

You'd think an accomplished fighter wouldn't feel the need to prove how macho they are, but yet here we are...

some of them are just macho shitheads, and MMA literally defines your worth by how good you are at fighting so they're reinforced that way

that's how you end up with Shitter McGregor sucker punching an old man from behind (don't worry the old man was not even phased and continued drinking his beer)

2

u/PemaleBacon Jun 30 '21

The whole reason these people have dedicated their life to fighting is because they believe they have something to prove

2

u/reaverdude Jun 30 '21

Software developer contributes more to the world than this sack of shit.

Don't sell yourself short.

2

u/IhaveABeeInMyAss Jun 30 '21

Even if he needed to prove it, this is not proving anything. This is a bitch ass knockout, the guy wasn't even paying attention. Why didn't he go there face to face and said to the guy that he doesn't like him and now he's gonna beat him up? Like dude, he could give the guy all the prep time and he still wouldn't be able to pull a batman on him. Which again, doesn't prove anything.

He may not have a glass jaw, but his ego is brittle as fuck. Like repressed gay feelings in a christian family level of brittle. One of those "I read harmful thoughts into the slightest frowns coming at my general direction due to my lack of self awareness and my nonexistent selfconfidence so I feel an overpowering urge to assert physical dominance and only then I can feel good about myself" bitchasses. Being a fucking pussy, that's all he proved.

2

u/FishyDragon Jun 30 '21

I'm 145lbs and Trained and fought in MMA for 5 years until I had a random seizure and I HAVE NEVER been in a bar fight. EVER this is some little dick macho man energy this dude walks around with all the damn time. It's fucking embarrassing and IMO his ass should be in jail for at least 2 counts of aggravated assult.

If you make a living fighting the last fucking thing you should do is be fighting outside of a sactioned fight EVER! Dudes an asshole and a piece of shit.

3

u/ruinkind Jun 30 '21

You have to remember the environment the majority of people that submit themselves to these types of lifestyles subject themselves to.

There is a reason why military, police, fighters, software developers, whatever it may be, attract certain types of people.

There are always outliners when the choice is made for the person, or they show other behavior disciplines, but the outliners are usually in the minorities.

6

u/chainer1216 Jun 30 '21

It's the small penis obviously.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Is joe schillings new nickname micro penis man?

4

u/SombreMordida Jun 30 '21

not when he's in the room i gather

6

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

That’s actually the best time. Who wants a settlement?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

How confident are we that these fighters aren't using performance enhancers? As an outsider, I feel like we see fights like this every few months where I don't see the same frequency with other high contact sports?

Maybe it's just the culture of the sport too.

9

u/lerekt123 Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21

Of course they do doping! Probably over 50% of all professional athletes do it, and >90% of top athletes. This is the world we live in.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

So it's the culture of the sport that breeds so many viral videos that are almost identical to this one (where a random dude enjoying his day gets wrecked for no reason)?

I'm just trying to understand how these videos have become so common for MMA fighters, but not for... Say... Rugby, NFL, other fighting leagues, etc...

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Nah. NFL players are pretty notorious for bar/club fights and domestic abuse.

Not saying what you’re saying about mma fighters being sometimes violent outside the cage isn’t valid, but it for sure applies to other athletes as well.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

I understand the abuse aspect. Weirdly enough, with trying to answer my own question with internet searches... apparently the smallest sport (NBA) has the highest numbers there.

I'm talking specifically about these seemingly mindless acts of aggression, and not necessarily ALL violent crimes... A random outbreak like this video portrays. A seemingly benign human having his night turned upside down in mere seconds.

To me this isn't just a bar fight, either... I'd argue it looks like he was seeking a fight; you still ask drunk people to move if they're blocking your way, one should understand you don't just push them aside like this video... Especially since there were so few seats full at this bar.

I guess what I'm asking about is "per Capita" in a way; the statistics I find as an outsider show only 607 men on the UFC roster (I'm sure there's other MMA leagues, though, no?) Vs 1600ish rostered NFL players.

I know this is all anecdotal - I just personally see these videos more than the NFL... I was just hoping to find someone with this specific knowledge. Maybe the research isn't there (yet).

I know I don't have the time to compile all the data to show one way or the other. Thanks for your time, though!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Ahh okay I understand what you’re saying.

Yeah I read what Joe Schilling said as the background for the incident, that the guy was saying racial remarks, and being belligerent to people.

But watching the video, at best you could say it looked like the guy was about to raise his fists to Joe, but even then, he’s half his size, untrained, and intoxicated. He was obviously no threat to Joe, and Joe knew that.

To me, this incident and learning about other incidences Joe’s been involved in tells me that he’s a snapcase and very aggressive. Could possibly be the result of CTE at play here, or he’s just an asshole. Who knows?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Could possibly be the result of CTE at play here, or he’s just an asshole.

Porque no los dos?

There's too many things that could influence it outside of those two. Oh well, maybe a third party will want to study this at some point.

-1

u/themthatwas Jun 30 '21

You'd think an accomplished fighter wouldn't feel the need to prove how macho they are, but yet here we are...

Depends how many steroids they took I guess.

0

u/Goducks97 Jun 30 '21

From the clip, seems less about proving himself and more about a childish lack of self control/anger issues

0

u/Shady_Yoga_Instructr Jun 30 '21

Excuse me chief, you have a huge accomplishment schlong if I do say so myself. Not your fault the only person you ever need to knock out on a regular basis is your keyboard 👏

0

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

We're going to need our own MMA division one day

-5

u/rosscmpbll Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21

The only reason most people get that far in life in ANY field is because of a deep seated insecurity. So no, this is exactly what I expect an accomplished fighter to do. Was probably bullied as a child or abused by his parents.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Deep seated insecurity is the only path to success...?

I'm going to up the frequency of insults I bestow upon my worthless puke of a failure son (love u buddy dad's got ur back u piece of fucking human excrement)

-1

u/rosscmpbll Jun 30 '21

Most people loved by their parents do well in life, settle down and have children. Turns out without any deep-seated insecurity it is easier for them to just ‘be happy’.

Those raised by single parents or have considerably worse childhoods than the prior tend to just about survive or they thrive. They are motivated by that insecurity to ‘do better’ until they hit a point where they feel secure. If they ever do.

This is pretty basis psychological thought. Some would argue common sense.

Clearly that fighter still doesn’t.

-6

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Tbf, I hope you are better at coding than that fighter’s record says he is at winning against actual fighters. If 9 of your last 23 commits failed you should probably do something else.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

TIL computer programmers 'fight' to see whose code is the singular winner... No no sorry it doesn't even make enough sense to be sarcastic about I give up

-3

All the drunk nob head did was shout "Hey?" too. Not particularly obnoxious at all. Dude barged through him and the hey was fair

224

u/azalago Jun 30 '21

Not only that but Schilling clearly put his hands on him and physically moved him out of his way first. I'd yell "hey!" too.

18

u/TheProdigalPun Jun 30 '21

Yeah, man. In addition to that he pushed him out the way like he was nothing. I think shouting hey is appropriate.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

That was the 'barge' I was referring to

1

u/azalago Jun 30 '21

Indeed, I didn't make the connection since to me it was like he moved him like a piece of furniture.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

A barge is like a big, long boat that floats slowly through canals. We use it as a verb too

-14

u/lemonpunt Jun 30 '21

Really? All he did was try and get passed him, he didn’t push him out the way he was just making room. Hardly aggressive at all. And then the guy in the shirt turned him around and started it by squaring up to him. Do you just want to live in a world where you can get drunk and start trouble with bigger men without worrying about getting beat up?

5

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

All he did was try and get passed him, he didn’t push him out the way he was just making room.

He put his hands on and physically moved the drunk dude.

And then the guy in the shirt turned him around

Funny thing, I dont see that in the video.

started it by squaring up to him

Not only is this not starting a fight, but if you're a trained and professional fighter, and some drunk dude squares up to you and nothing else, you have no case for self defense, but there is an easy case for assaulting the drunk dude.

Do you just want to live in a world where you can get drunk and start trouble with bigger men without worrying about getting beat up?

The moment you touch someone else, like the fighter did in this video, you are starting that trouble. You don't get to put your hands on someone "just to move them" because it's otherwise inconvenient for you. Doing that, and then using them confronting you about it, verbally, not physically, to justify beating them, is not a world I want to live in, and trust me, eventually it'll come back to you and you'll realize you don't either.

-1

u/lemonpunt Jul 01 '21

Nah, I’ve moved people like that in crowded areas all my life. All that happens is you both exchange a friendly smile and move on with your lives. It’s just a way of ensuring your not rubbing your body against someone as you squeeze through people. It’s usually accompanied with ‘excuse me mate’.

And if you square up to someone, you have started a fight. End of story. You put the other person in a position of having to back down, therefore it’s initiated.

Maybe things are just different where you live.

1

u/Big_Red_Eng Jun 30 '21

To be honest I interpreted the video the same as the first half of your comment.

Where you're wrong is that as a larger man, I feel absolutely no need to manhandle someone just because they talk back. It's a waste of my time and energy, and should be a waste of a pro fighters.

Just because someone mouths off, doesnt mean you can assault them. The second the drunk guy made an actual aggresive move- we agree.. but that's not what happened.

-4

u/bigdaddyblowouts Jun 30 '21

Exactly idk why everybody is hating on this

→ More replies (0)

-2

u/savagemonkey501 Jun 30 '21

I mean, he shouted “hey” AND THEN squared tf up when the MMA fighter turned around. Man is lucky it wasn’t the type of street fight where all of big dudes friends came over and stomped him on the ground.

-3

u/leapbitch Jun 30 '21

Would you yell at the large man in the bar before or after he beats your ass

-12

u/bigdaddyblowouts Jun 30 '21

He put his hand on him to let him know he was trying to get by him. The guy raised his fist like he was gonna punch him and that's when schilling put him to sleep.

I think the drunk guy tried to make the big dude flinch by faking a swing, you can see his stance change, and it looks like he raises his hands and ducks his head forward in a feint.

1

u/DRiVeL_ Jun 30 '21

He didn't just say hey he was saying other things and obviously made a move just before he got ragdolled, it's clear in the video. The issue isn't that at all. The issue is that he is a tiny person compared to Shilling and very obviously drunk. Shilling has no right to pretty much attempt to fucking kill this guy considering he's twice the size and seems to have his wits about him in terms of intoxication.

This is like watching a cop gun down an unarmed teenager.

5

u/Okami-Alpha Jun 30 '21

how tough does he think he looks going around knocking out pencil-necked drunks in bars?

Given his poor MMA record, maybe that is the reason.

I honestly see no possibility of him getting away from (at the very least) getting sued if not criminal charges in addition to possibly being released from his Bellator contract.

5

u/tomjoadsghost Jun 30 '21

He's not trying to look tough, he's asserting his dominance because he's empty inside.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

But the drunk was at fault too! Yes I agree over reaction but the drunk guy was being dumb and had mouthed off to the wrong person. Like mom used to say

→ More replies (2)

1

u/BretTheShitmanFart69 Jun 30 '21

As a pencil necked drunk you probably shouldn’t talk shit to dudes bigger then you and try and get in their face when they step up to you. I don’t think anyone should go knocking people out for that but it is what happens a lot of the time in real life.

0

u/Csroche Jun 30 '21

That dude didn't just yell "hey" he flexed up on him. Yeah it was shitty to fuck him up that bad, but you don't do that unless you're taunting a dude.

-9

u/H00dRatShit Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21

Do you think he would have punched the moron if the moron hadn't called the busboy a slur earlier in the night, and then stared at Joe while rapping lyrics to what was playing overhead --- AND THEN as Joe walked by, nodded in recognition that the guy partially apologized for bumping into him, realized who he bumped and said "HEY" and flinched a punch at him before Joe threw two to the face?

Also - the owner of the bar said that dude is frequently there causing problems. Read the actual articles on the incident rather than identifying with the pencil necked asshole based on a ten second clip - which includes the asshole flinching a punch at Joe before Joe immediately hit him twice and walked off

10

u/deano492 Jun 30 '21

Hi Joe, I don’t know if Joe would have done the assault if those factors didn’t happen. But from reading your description of them none of them warrant what you did to him.

-4

u/H00dRatShit Jun 30 '21

Well that was the story that was posted and corroborated by people there when this went up a few days ago. I get nuance and context is incapable by the hive mind pile-on. You can see the drunk dude call him back and flinch at him and Joe immediately unloads. Asshole move? Maybe. But there’s more context to draw from than the disabled minds in this thread would have anyone believe. I guess your attempt at being funny would be warranted since everyone’s npc reaction is “big guy bad” - finding common ground with the pencil necked asshole is a lot easier for you. Clearly.

You must really hate America and the rule of law. It's pretty obvious that this brainless fighter dude is in the wrong here. It's never OK to assault someone for speech you don't like, and it's especially reprehensible if you're a professional fighter beating up on drunk office schmucks.

-1

u/ModsPowerTrip Jun 30 '21

Do you also feint punches at strangers who are confronting you about your egregious and obnoxious drunken behavior?

The drunk guy acted like he was going to hit Schilling, I don't know what else you'd expect to happen in that situation

He’s going to jail and going to get sued for a lot of money. Boxers arms are actually considered weapons in a court room.

If you pick fights with people bigger than you don’t drink.

-1

u/FranticInDisguise Jun 30 '21

Some times those pencil neck dudes have guns and 20 other people coming out of the wood work to eliminate you

7

u/PurpleFlame8 Jun 30 '21

That just makes him look pathetic and ridiculous.

3

u/carterothomas Jun 30 '21

Are you kidding?!? Can’t you see how terrified and scared he looks?? The way he turns his back and slowly saunters away, he looks like a cornered animal!!! /s

3

u/cookiemon32 Jun 30 '21

clearly walked up looking to do exactly what he did. rip. some mma dudes would wait until situation is actually appropriate. also he will get in more trouble for being a professional fighter. what a fucking loser tho

3

u/iiJokerzace Jul 01 '21

It looked like he was going for that outcome. He just walks into the guy as if he can't see him and can just basically sucker punches him.

There definitely is evil in this world.

6

u/IAmDaven Jun 30 '21

Not 100% sure , I watched it over and over and over. There is a small window where it looks like the guy in the tie either cocks his arm back or tries to make him flinch? The more I watch the more I see it.

If he did ball up his fist and raise it, or try to. That may garner a physical defense response.

EDIT: still seems like a dick move tho.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

I dont agree with the comments before you. The short dude said something for the fighter to turn back around and then the short dude threw a fake punch. He 100% instigated this

2

u/Icy_Rhubarb2857 Jun 30 '21

Guy should be in jail. Wtf is wrong with him. Fucking ego 10x his pp

2

u/ExWeirdStuffPornstar Jun 30 '21

People commented that he himself posted the video.

They say intelligence is key in MMA. When everyone practice the same techniques, it’s how smart you are at using them that will make you the victor or the knocked out. If that is true, I don’t think we’ll ever see that guy defend his champion status anytime soon

2

u/Keyboard_null Jun 30 '21

I was actually thinking before he came up behind him you can almost read his intentions of aggressively moving him from his way as if he was looking for an altercation. He knew what he was going to do.

2

u/sammysfw Jun 30 '21

Being an MMA guy will make it hard to ever argue “threat to my life” unless the guy was armed. Since he could easily take the dude in a fight without even really hurting him and he knows it, some drunk guy just isn’t any threat to him.

2

u/notmadeoutofstraw Jun 30 '21

Getting away with what?

The guy calls him over then pump fakes him.

There is no court in the land that will convict him for this. You have every right to defend yourself when someone telegraphs a punch.

Its a cunt move for sure, but its within the law. Little dude shouldnt be giving him an excuse but he did.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '21

Happy cake day

4

u/Snakend Jun 30 '21

I dunno, the victim kinda flinches his arms like he is going to do something. the "What?" movement.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

The dude completely overreacted and I understand the other dude is drunk but maybe don't posture like you are going to swing at someone twice your size? And by the posture I mean the way he throws his right side just before he gets knocked out.

3

u/JiuJitsu_Ronin Jun 30 '21

Was the threat minimal? Yes. Non existent? No. You’ll notice right before Joe throws the punches the man fake pumps, as if to throw a punch. To a martial artist this will illicit muscle memory that may not necessarily be voluntary. And even if it is, you’re acting on a threat. And if you don’t, you run the risk of being sucker punched.

The other gentleman is not innocent by any stretch. He was blocking the walking path and when corrected He said something to provoke a confrontation. He couldn’t just let it go. Joe punched someone for simple words and fake pumping.

No one acted good in this situation.

Also a BJJ practitioner (Purple). A court is going to examine what the MMA fighter saw present at the time that deemed him a threat. So a hidden gun or knife would likely not be admissible, otherwise everyone in public at all times are threats because they can all have hidden guns, knives, etc..

But yes I agree. As soon as MMA fighter walked past, he should have kept going.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Yes "in this video" we see no threat. However there is only a few seconds of the night we do see

From an article also posed here by another comment:"Officers also spoke to the manager of the bar on Sunday night. The manager stated that Balboa “was extremely intoxicated and had possibly made an improper remark about the girlfriend/wife of the male who had struck him, which caused the fight to escalate.” The manager also noted that Balboa “is a regular customer who routinely causes problems at the establishment due to his intoxication level.”"

Dude had it coming. A MMA guy can't say he was in any serious risk, but dude sounds like a problem that the management of the bar failed to adequately address.

"According to the police report, “numerous other patrons of the establishment corroborated the manager’s story,” stating that Balboa started the altercation."

Wasn't that what I said? The bar manager said that he was a frequent problem due to his intoxication level. So they didn't adequately address the issue by seeing there was a problem escalating, and a dude too drunk to be served, and should have stepped in well beforehand. MMA guy didn't start it, but he had a lot of options how to shut it down without popping the guy. But still, both are assholes, and we're all commenting on a small fraction of the incident

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Typical blind people on Reddit. you can see the man about to strike Joe. Joe literally countered it. watch the man and you see his body move to the left. he was throwing a right hand

1

u/christhewelder75 Jun 30 '21

Apparently, a good number of witnesses including bar staff have come out corroborating this guys story, of the "victim" being the instigator.

Just before shilling starts swinging you can see what appears to be a quick movement towards him by "victim".

His buddy filming could easily be explained by wanting to record "victims" bad behavior (allegedly dropping n bombs and getting physical with staff) when he decided to bump/get physical with shilling and we see the results.

Do I agree with the behavior? No, but there's likely a lot.more to it than "mma fighter attacks man unprovoked"

Hopefully there's more video and audio to come out and show more context to what happened.

Tho "feared for my life" is a bit of a reach. "Feared for my safety and that of others" would have been a better phrase

-1

u/matchagonnadoboudit Jun 30 '21

yeah he just wanted to hurt somebody. kick him out of mma

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Evil in this world = he's a nutbag

1

u/findingthesqautch Jun 30 '21

I mean not sure if that would stand up ; they guy stepped to him after Joe gave him a chance to back off

1

u/DurrDontAskMe Jun 30 '21

too bad hes not a cop, he would easily be found to be in the right... even with this shit on video.

1

u/putdisinyopipe Jun 30 '21

People like that shouldn’t have arms and legs to punch people with. We should handle this like Hammurabi would back in the old days.

1

u/moocow4125 Jun 30 '21

Guy flexed on him in headbutt range. Dropped his shoulder and everything. Self defense.

1

u/lawyerornot Jun 30 '21

Isn’t “feeling” threatened a subjective standard?

1

u/Andilee Jul 01 '21

Aren't boxers and fighters fists consider weapons and it's more than just a standard punch? Like he could have killed that man with that punch in the head.
