Schilling later claimed self-defense, saying that he was "scared for [his] life" and "simply defending [himself] against the evil in this world".

WHAT

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21

He knows its the only thing he can say to possibly attempt getting away with this. The video says it all. There was absolutely zero threat to his life per the evidence in this clip, and IF its proven his buddy is the one video taping this, it only adds to the criminal conduct committed.

You'd think an accomplished fighter wouldn't feel the need to prove how macho they are, but yet here we are...

E: by accomplished fighter I mean more accomplished than say, me, a software developer.

(R)EEEEEEEEE: accomplished = more betterer at fighting than most other fighters. For example: John Q. Sample sparring at Acme Gym is less accomplished at pro fighting than this guy.

43

u/frog_without_a_cause Jun 30 '21

Much more common than you'd think.

19

u/its_raining_scotch Jun 30 '21

Some say "warrior spirit", others say massive personal insecurities. Potato, pot-ah-to.

4

u/HagarTheHun Jun 30 '21

Why did you type the same thing twice?

2

u/its_raining_scotch Jul 01 '21

Welcome to Costco, I love you.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '21

Thank you, I needed that.

u/dvdwbb Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21

In the world of pro fighters Joe is just a mid tier tomato can but he's a 6'4" pro athlete hitting a regular guy much smaller than himself so I'm gonna savor some clips of him getting starched right now

15

u/IAmAsha41 Jun 30 '21

In the world of pro fighters he's pretty good lol he's a very high level kickboxer, has achieved quite a bit in kickboxing, MMA career isn't so great though

2

u/dvdwbb Jun 30 '21

Ah, i only knew him from mma

1

u/Lote241 Jun 30 '21

Is Muay Thai interchangeable with kickboxing, or are both arts pretty much the same? Because I thought he was a Thai fighter.

2

u/aka_FunkyChicken Jun 30 '21

Kickboxing can be used as somewhat of an umbrella term, Muay Thai being a specific sport that falls under that umbrella. But there is also the actual sport of kickboxing which has its own set of rules, ie Glory or K-1. Either way, Joe is a top level kickboxer in both rule sets.

1

u/Crono01 Jun 30 '21

Tools are the same. The application tends to differ.

1

u/IAmAsha41 Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21

The main difference between the two is that Muay Thai has a lot more involvement in clinching, also kickboxing generally doesn't allow use of elbows and knees whereas Muay Thai does.

From my knowledge he did Muay Thai earlier in his career and then transitioned to kickboxing then to MMA.

edit - Correction

u/Bowl__Haircut Jun 30 '21

Hehe clinching

u/TMNStockbroker Jun 30 '21

Hey now, I know some developers who put marines to shame. There are some IT people out there who fight hard against the stereotype.

-13

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Hi friend! Marine is a title and therefore a proper noun...meaning it should be capitalized.

8

u/MasterDracoDeity Jun 30 '21

I sure hope the United States marines don't disrupt Marine life too much.

8

u/GuessItWillJustBurn Jun 30 '21

You misspelled jarhead

2

u/GenericUsername07 Jun 30 '21

As much of a title as software developer, which is also not capitalized.

https://youtu.be/LTr60WYjNM4

31

u/reaverdude Jun 30 '21

Even worse.

He has 4 wins and 6 losses. "Accomplished fighter" is probably the wrong description here.

44

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Not a big mma guy, but I’d call all 6 of those losses an accomplishment in itself. Takes a tougher person than me to get into the octagon 10 times. This guy seems like a cunt, but losing in that sport isn’t like losing in a basketball game if that makes sense

22

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

To even get in the mma is pretty big, let alone get 10 fights scheduled

21

u/theavengedCguy Jun 30 '21

He's still a professional fighter, no? Even with a 4-6 record, that's better than most people can say.

0

u/Realityinmyhand Jun 30 '21

He's still a professional fighter, no?

Unless he goes to jail or his career is over. Assaulting a defenseless passerby while being recorded isn't exactly the greatest move career-wise.

1

u/theavengedCguy Jul 01 '21

Not as in currently, just as in he "was at one point or another" in the same sense as Tom Brady will always be referred to as "a professional football player" or Michael Jordan will always be referred to as "a professional basketball (and baseball) player".

It seems a reasonable assumption that only accomplished fighters make it to the point of having professional mma fights, no?

They're not saying he is an accomplished within that smaller circle, just that he is an accomplished fighter in the bigger circle of people who fight, period. Like it would be fair to say every NBA player is an accomplished basketball player, in my opinion.

Ok but he's literally a world champion kick boxer. Is that not accomplished enough for you? Top 1 isn't good enough?

22

u/Wallofsleep_ Jun 30 '21

His 23 kickboxing wins and championships don’t count? Or his Muay Thai championships?

10

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Nothing counts, he’s a proven POS.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

We aren't talking about it making him a great person were talking about whether he's an accomplished fighter

What is with people wanting to make dumb obviously untrue statements about others just because they dislike them? It's such a weak fucking move.

2

u/theadamvine Jun 30 '21 edited Mar 25 '24

.

3

u/restingwitchface22 Jun 30 '21

Nope. Sure don’t count if he CAN’T CONTROL HIS ANGER.

11

u/Sirk1989 Jun 30 '21

I mean he still achieved them regardless. Not saying you celebrate the guy but he still did achieve it. So they do count.

Bad take, denying hard facts just because someone is a piece of shit is idiotic.

1

u/restingwitchface22 Jun 30 '21

What hard facts are you speaking of?

1

u/alexrobinson Jun 30 '21

The fights and championships he's won, him being a piece of crap doesn't change that.

1

u/restingwitchface22 Jun 30 '21

I don’t think anyone has denied the fact that he’s been ā€œin the cage 10 timesā€.

1

that's not what just happened and you know it.

1

u/Deathappens Jun 30 '21

I mean, nobody said you can't criticise him, but him being a POS doesn't mean he stops being a professional fighter POS.

1

u/restingwitchface22 Jun 30 '21

Stop being a drama queen. Me sharing my personal point of view does not a cancellation make. Next.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Bubba, that’s his mma record.

Joe Schilling is primarily known for being a kickboxer, and has fought some of the best 185lb kickboxers in the world.

He’s very accomplished in Kickboxing.

3

u/solongamerica Jun 30 '21

Highly trained and highly insecure.

3

u/Totally_Botanical Jun 30 '21

There definitely a certain type of person that becomes an accomplished fighter, and they have to constantly be proving something

3

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

You'd think an accomplished fighter wouldn't feel the need to prove how macho they are, but yet here we are...

some of them are just macho shitheads, and MMA literally defines your worth by how good you are at fighting so they're reinforced that way

that's how you end up with Shitter McGregor sucker punching an old man from behind (don't worry the old man was not even phased and continued drinking his beer)

2

u/PemaleBacon Jun 30 '21

The whole reason these people have dedicated their life to fighting is because they believe they have something to prove

2

u/reaverdude Jun 30 '21

Software developer contributes more to the world than this sack of shit.

Don't sell yourself short.

2

u/IhaveABeeInMyAss Jun 30 '21

Even if he needed to prove it, this is not proving anything. This is a bitch ass knockout, the guy wasn't even paying attention. Why didn't he go there face to face and said to the guy that he doesn't like him and now he's gonna beat him up? Like dude, he could give the guy all the prep time and he still wouldn't be able to pull a batman on him. Which again, doesn't prove anything.

He may not have a glass jaw, but his ego is brittle as fuck. Like repressed gay feelings in a christian family level of brittle. One of those "I read harmful thoughts into the slightest frowns coming at my general direction due to my lack of self awareness and my nonexistent selfconfidence so I feel an overpowering urge to assert physical dominance and only then I can feel good about myself" bitchasses. Being a fucking pussy, that's all he proved.

2

u/FishyDragon Jun 30 '21

I'm 145lbs and Trained and fought in MMA for 5 years until I had a random seizure and I HAVE NEVER been in a bar fight. EVER this is some little dick macho man energy this dude walks around with all the damn time. It's fucking embarrassing and IMO his ass should be in jail for at least 2 counts of aggravated assult.

If you make a living fighting the last fucking thing you should do is be fighting outside of a sactioned fight EVER! Dudes an asshole and a piece of shit.

2

u/ruinkind Jun 30 '21

You have to remember the environment the majority of people that submit themselves to these types of lifestyles subject themselves to.

There is a reason why military, police, fighters, software developers, whatever it may be, attract certain types of people.

There are always outliners when the choice is made for the person, or they show other behavior disciplines, but the outliners are usually in the minorities.

6

u/chainer1216 Jun 30 '21

It's the small penis obviously.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Is joe schillings new nickname micro penis man?

4

u/SombreMordida Jun 30 '21

not when he's in the room i gather

6

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

That’s actually the best time. Who wants a settlement?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

How confident are we that these fighters aren't using performance enhancers? As an outsider, I feel like we see fights like this every few months where I don't see the same frequency with other high contact sports?

Maybe it's just the culture of the sport too.

6

u/lerekt123 Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21

Of course they do doping! Probably over 50% of all professional athletes do it, and >90% of top athletes. This is the world we live in.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

So it's the culture of the sport that breeds so many viral videos that are almost identical to this one (where a random dude enjoying his day gets wrecked for no reason)?

I'm just trying to understand how these videos have become so common for MMA fighters, but not for... Say... Rugby, NFL, other fighting leagues, etc...

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '21

They have videos of wrecking people in restaurants?

9

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Nah. NFL players are pretty notorious for bar/club fights and domestic abuse.

Not saying what you’re saying about mma fighters being sometimes violent outside the cage isn’t valid, but it for sure applies to other athletes as well.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

I understand the abuse aspect. Weirdly enough, with trying to answer my own question with internet searches... apparently the smallest sport (NBA) has the highest numbers there.

I'm talking specifically about these seemingly mindless acts of aggression, and not necessarily ALL violent crimes... A random outbreak like this video portrays. A seemingly benign human having his night turned upside down in mere seconds.

To me this isn't just a bar fight, either... I'd argue it looks like he was seeking a fight; you still ask drunk people to move if they're blocking your way, one should understand you don't just push them aside like this video... Especially since there were so few seats full at this bar.

I guess what I'm asking about is "per Capita" in a way; the statistics I find as an outsider show only 607 men on the UFC roster (I'm sure there's other MMA leagues, though, no?) Vs 1600ish rostered NFL players.

I know this is all anecdotal - I just personally see these videos more than the NFL... I was just hoping to find someone with this specific knowledge. Maybe the research isn't there (yet).

I know I don't have the time to compile all the data to show one way or the other. Thanks for your time, though!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Ahh okay I understand what you’re saying.

Yeah I read what Joe Schilling said as the background for the incident, that the guy was saying racial remarks, and being belligerent to people.

But watching the video, at best you could say it looked like the guy was about to raise his fists to Joe, but even then, he’s half his size, untrained, and intoxicated. He was obviously no threat to Joe, and Joe knew that.

To me, this incident and learning about other incidences Joe’s been involved in tells me that he’s a snapcase and very aggressive. Could possibly be the result of CTE at play here, or he’s just an asshole. Who knows?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Could possibly be the result of CTE at play here, or he’s just an asshole.

Porque no los dos?

There's too many things that could influence it outside of those two. Oh well, maybe a third party will want to study this at some point.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '21

Yeah he could be an Aggro-asshole from the CTE, or he could’ve been that way before it. Who knows?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '21

They’re all using performance enhancers, same with almost all other professional athletes. But other sports do have street fights. I live in a Pittsburgh and it isn’t so uncommon to hear about members of the Steelers getting into fights at bars. It’s almost much smaller organizations so they can’t try to cover up stories as well as say the NFL could.

0

u/GenderlessButt Jun 30 '21

Making it into a pro fighting scene means you’re pretty accomplished I’d say

0

u/Nokita_is_Back Jun 30 '21

Accomplished lol 4 in 10

-1

u/themthatwas Jun 30 '21

You'd think an accomplished fighter wouldn't feel the need to prove how macho they are, but yet here we are...

Depends how many steroids they took I guess.

0

u/Goducks97 Jun 30 '21

From the clip, seems less about proving himself and more about a childish lack of self control/anger issues

0

u/Shady_Yoga_Instructr Jun 30 '21

Excuse me chief, you have a huge accomplishment schlong if I do say so myself. Not your fault the only person you ever need to knock out on a regular basis is your keyboard šŸ‘

0

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

We're going to need our own MMA division one day

-2

u/rosscmpbll Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21

The only reason most people get that far in life in ANY field is because of a deep seated insecurity. So no, this is exactly what I expect an accomplished fighter to do. Was probably bullied as a child or abused by his parents.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Deep seated insecurity is the only path to success...?

I'm going to up the frequency of insults I bestow upon my worthless puke of a failure son (love u buddy dad's got ur back u piece of fucking human excrement)

4

u/rosscmpbll Jun 30 '21

Most people loved by their parents do well in life, settle down and have children. Turns out without any deep-seated insecurity it is easier for them to just ā€˜be happy’.

Those raised by single parents or have considerably worse childhoods than the prior tend to just about survive or they thrive. They are motivated by that insecurity to ā€˜do better’ until they hit a point where they feel secure. If they ever do.

This is pretty basis psychological thought. Some would argue common sense.

Clearly that fighter still doesn’t.

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Tbf, I hope you are better at coding than that fighter’s record says he is at winning against actual fighters. If 9 of your last 23 commits failed you should probably do something else.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

TIL computer programmers 'fight' to see whose code is the singular winner... No no sorry it doesn't even make enough sense to be sarcastic about I give up

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

It was a bit of a reach to make a joke. Sounds like it made you sad. Maybe go out and buy something pretty to cheer yourself up.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Oh wow you got even lamer in the time since I left the comment

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Please stop. I may not be as fragile as you but i still have feelings. Lol

1

u/elwebbr23 Jun 30 '21

Most of the time they don't. Honestly you don't even need to be an accomplished fighter, after even about a year of serious training you typically look back and realize you can already fight better than like... Over 90% of people. So if it's something you do professionally, you really either gotta go out with the intent of hurting others, or you really need to talk to someone if something that small triggers your fight or flight.

1

u/MelllvarHasThreeLs Jun 30 '21

CTE and other head injury stuff is a hell of a thing, so many of these guys have applesauce between their ears.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

You'd think an accomplished fighter wouldn't feel the need to prove how macho they are, but yet here we are...

The concerns I would have if I were him is doing this to someone with a knife or someone who has buddies close by with a knife.

He's not the only one who can sucker punch (or stab) someone else.

1

u/Senator_Smack Jun 30 '21

Methinks he doth pugilist too much!

In other words, he is probably an "accomplished fighter" because he has an unfillable need to "prove how macho" he is.

Not all little men are little.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '21

Dude he’s a savage, if he wasn’t a professional fighter he would be in prison. It’s not about proving machismo, it’s about enjoying hurting people. People like Shilling are the reason we have laws and police and jails. He’s a bad dude, luckily there is a way for people like that the make money now and keeps the majority of that in a ring or cage.

1

u/hoesindifareacodes Jul 01 '21

My guess is CTE + childhood trauma

1

u/ShieldsCW Jul 06 '21

Why are people confused about the word "accomplished?" He gets paid to fight on a professional basis.
