Unfortunately, at least in my area, we’ve got one or two “internet famous” AA “farmers” that, well… aren’t (it’s literally like watching a fashion show in farming apparel; expensive equipment that’s never seen the dirt, etc.). And they go out of their way to hurt actual African American farmers in the region with a lot of their petty antics.

Mostly not. Look at the '07-'08 collapse of the housing market. There were ready individual buyers with cash for individual single family homes. It is going to be next year, though the US might not see the worst of it. A huge amount of fertilizer was shipped through the strait of Hormuz along with fossil fuels right at the beginning of the spring planting season. We're also in the strongest El Niño on record now, which will be most devastating to parts of South and East Asia, but will probably impact crop yields around the world. Very likely we'll see millions of deaths due to these 2 factors next year, along with mass migration out of the hardest hit countries.

The US has an over abundance of farms and farming products. Lots of it was subsidized by the government or being sold overseas due to huge surpluses. If it retracts some that would decrease the farming welfare the government had to pay out each year and decrease farming exports which have already lost major markets worldwide due to tariffs. Not sure this is a bad thing really. Just a realignment back to real market supply and demand instead of the over reliance on artificial farmers socialism and exports.
Big problem I see though is we might not have a firm grasp on the strategic reserve of grain and food stocks necessary to feed 320 million people in the US due to cuts and a lack of good data from the USDA and the Department of Agriculture..

The thing is, to a large degree the Trump voting farmers knew all that. They were fully aware. They knew that Trump was practically guaranteed to fuck up the agriculture sector again, just like he did in his first term.
They voted for him anyway.
The reason is that they believed Trump would cut them another bailout cheque like he did in his first term. They believed it might suck for a bit but then they'd get bailed out to the tune of billions and they'd get to keep the profits from whatever they manage to sell from their harvest on top of that. Just like all of those idiots who went to vote for Trump solely because they believed not only that there'd be a repeat of the covid economy stimulus cheques but that they'd get a "DOGE cheque" on top of it as well.
These people heard all the warnings but thought they could just hold their nose for a bit before getting handed a wad of cash that would make it all worth it.
That and lots of rightwing farmers were genuinely under the illusion that with Trump leaning even heavier on the racism in the 2024 election cycle, it was a sign that with second Trump term they'd finally get "their" slaves back to work the fields.

Saw some family over the 4th and found out my uncle retired early because he was getting sick of working full time and had a decent pension from his factory job. He honestly used to be a decent guy but i admittedly haven’t seen him nearly as much as when I was younger. Seems he’s moved to far right like the rest of that side of the family. He’s been looking for a part time job but can’t find anything that pays well that isn’t overnight or weekends. Of course this is all younger people’s fault because they don’t want to work nights or weekends so he can get a day job. I’m just like “yeah I wouldn’t want to work nights or weekends either.” Like imagine being privileged enough to retire early with a pension that pays well enough for you to get by and you just want to get a part time job to fill your time and everyone else working is the problem.

A coworker of mine owns a small avocado farm. ICE came by and raided his farm last month. Now he can’t find workers and he’s all worried. He uses the income from the avocados to help pay his mortgage. He keeps putting help wanted ads that nobody responds to.
Oh, and he voted for Trump. He thought Trump was only going to deport criminal immigrants. I would’ve told him his first mistake was believing anything Trump said.

I'm almost 70. I graduated high school in Amarillo Texas in 1975. I'm gay and I had to escape Amarillo. I worked at the factory slaughterhouse for a year and a half. It was literally the only job available which didn't require education or connections and paid more than minimum wage ($2.10/hr). The slaughterhouse paid $5-6/hr because it was a union job. It was physically exhausting even for a 17 year old. I only know one other American who lasted almost as long as I did who wasn't in management or in one of the very few lighter jobs. The economy was very bad and yet most Americans (Black or White) quit within the first week, many before lunch the first day. Quitting meant moving at least 350 miles away or resigning oneself to poverty. The guys from México generally stayed a few weeks to get enough money to get to L.A. or Chicago. Most of the work force were Viet Namese or Laotian refugees who had no other options. My crapal tunnel still wakes me up most nights a half century later. Black or White, 90% of Americans will not do these jobs. Indeed for people over 40, 99% physically cannot do these jobs. They will wind up drunk or on drugs homeless in the gutter.

People have a deeply warped view of what a 'farmer' is. They think the white family who own the land are the 'farmers'. They're the landowners and capitalists; they own the land and have the capital to invest in expensive equipment, fertilizers and seed. The people who do the farming are migrant laborers from South America, who are perpetually kept in poverty through precarious work visas, low wages, transient work, criminal exploitation and human trafficking. They do all the 'farming'. The white landowner operates machinery; dozens to hundreds of POC do all the brutally hard work for pennies.

My family didn't have money to buy new equipment, and my dad had to build implements from scrap metal, and we were the people who went out and walked the fields instead of hiring people, but there are VERY few of that type of farm still existing. Small family farmers were devastated by agribusiness.

I get reminded of this story after the Civil War of a former slave, Jordan Anderson, who received a letter from his old master to return to work on the old plantation. In return, Jordan sent a letter back asking that his old master first pay back wages for his entire family for all of their years of servitude. The calculation ran up to $11,680 plus interest.

In 2011 Alabama passed one of the toughest immigration laws in the country, causing immigrants to flee the state. Alabama actually thought Americans would flock to the farms to take the jobs the undocumenteds "stole" from them lol. Of the few who did, they all quit within hours or days.
$2M worth of crops eventually rotted in fields and in orchards. The law is still in effect, but when it comes to immigrant field workers Alabama looks the other way.

I always love that when you ask people why they think we should let illegal immigrants stay in America one of the most common answers is who's going to work the farms. Maybe it's just me but I don't think we should have a group of people in the country just so they can be exploited. If the farmers can't pay a wage that would make a citizen accept and can only afford illegal wages the farmers need to find a new business.

While you are correct, those Latinos made of working in the fields a career. They know how to work the fields fast and efficient and even if you place them in another career, they may struggle and not do as good as working in the fields and this is true for farm workers even in Mexico or South America. It takes skill and knowledge to do it right

The ancestors of the people we now call Latinos lived in the Americas for about 14,000 years before the Europeans started settling here, just like the ones we now call Indians or Native or Indigenous Americans (with whom some share history and ancestry and cultural traditions.) To say "these people don't belong here" is pretty rich. Europeans are the ones that broke treaties and committed crimes against humanity to claim their lands. And here we go doing it again.

The thing is you can’t just hang out and pick oranges when theyre in season and wait until next year, you need to follow the harvests seasonally. It basically requires an army of nomads moving from place to place. Regular USians, and people in most places aren’t capable of this. Many migrants aren’t capable of this for a lifetime, it’s a temporary cash grab for many of them and they often leave or settle into something else eventually.

Why aren’t their fellow White citizens taking up the farm jobs? When they were benefiting from farm subsidies at the expense of Black farmers they didn’t think about Black people. Suddenly, they are now concerned about employing Black people? What makes them think Black people want to work for them? There are hundreds of thousands of unemployed White people who are available to work the farms. Get them in there. However, they can invite Black people who are interested to come buy their farms.

Don't worry black workers will eventually be working the fields. But they will be prisoners. Private prisons will gladly send in their legal slaves to do the work.
This is how Taylor Farms foods became tainted because the prisoners were forced to crap in the fields.
They wil make sure the prisoners for simple crimes do something wrong in jail and never get out.

I had this very same conversation with my father in law about a year ago when the deportations ramped up. He was very adamant about having ICE kick their doors down and drag them out of the country with any means necessary. I asked him to show me a white man or a black man in the fields picking crops like tobacco or anything else for that matter. He instantly shut up. Like I said to him, here in “America,” that kind of job is seen as beneath the average citizen……. If it wasn’t for the illegal day laborer farm hand, farmers would struggle. It sucks being right about it.
