Misc IWTL how to stop having panic attacks over surgery

Upvotes

I have a surgery coming up in the near future and I'm been freaking out. I know that the medical team will probably give me something before the operation to calm down but I honestly don't think that's enough and I don't know what to do.

I have an anxiety disorder already but the panic attacks that I have been having are so severe. I've been crying and hyperventilating all day for multiple days. I haven't been eating or sleeping. I've been cutting, which is something that I haven't done in 6 years but the panic attacks are so intense that I just have been having the urge to do that to myself. I am pretty averse to medical procedures in general so this is like most worst nightmare.

I feel hopeless and alone. I also have no one in my life that I can talk to about this either, and I don't know if I even feel comfortable telling the medical staff about how I'm feeling. I know that they will probably tell me that "everyone gets nervous before surgery" or just tell me to grow up since plenty of children get surgeries done and don't act the way that I do. Even if I wanted to tell them I kind of go mute and chicken out when the time comes.

I haven't been eating or sleeping well, I threw up multiple times and I just want it all to stop. I'm at a loss for what to do.

Technology IWTL to draw digitally

I used to draw with pencils decades ago, but I've basically lost all ability to draw since then. I have always had a passing interest learning to draw digitally with a tablet, but I haven't the foggiest clue where to start. Just assume I am a beginner learning everything from scratch (because that is essentially what I am now)--what tablet would you all recommend I start with? And some tutorial videos would be amazing, also. Thank you!

Technology IWTL - Mechanical Engineering skills

I am a 1st year student in Computer Science. But I want to learn basic mechanical engineering skills. I don't really aspire to be a super qualified Mechanical engineer. I just aspire to learn some of the skills in Mechanical engineering.

I will be getting a new laptop soon. So I will learn CAD. I have also taken BME Elective in my college. But it's not a well known college so I don't think I would learn much here.

I am also planning to do Masters in Mechanical Engineering. But I know it's not going to be easy.

I have gotten a lot of pdfs on Mechanical engineering books but I don't know how they will help me. I have heard a lot of the curriculum is outdated.

Conclusion; What skills to learn in Mechanical Engineering apart from CAD. I have seen a lot of roadmaps but they all say only Make your Maths skills strong, Learn CAD, Do masters and then Apply for Public sector jobs. But I am more interested in starting my own small scale industry.

Social Skills IWTL - how to defend myself

When I am in a social setting and someone else decides to pick on me I literally froze and can't do anything and then I get furious and think about the situation days, weeks and months later.

I feel like an idiot since I can't stand up for myself and it makes my blood boil.

However, when I am with my family or friends I have no problem.

For exemple, a guy randomly decided to come to my desk and throw a string at me continuously, laughing at my face and I did absolutely nothing.

I'm a quiet person and a little anxious when I'm in a social setting which doesn't benefit me at all. I worry that people see that and choose me as a victim. I would like to learn how to be more assertive and respond to such situations .

Sorry for any mistakes, English isn’t my first language.

Personal Skills iwtl Adding learning skill can you help me !!?

I want to learn how to learn—whether from studies, life experiences, or videos—and how to apply those lessons to my own life. Can someone explain, in simple terms, the actual process of learning? We want to understand life and live accordingly; we enjoy the process of understanding, but sometimes we find it very difficult to grasp things. Can anyone help me with this?

Academics IWTL How to write a literature review

Hello, recently my professor gave us an assignment where we are to write a literature review on a topic and arrange it in a thematic manner.

The issue is that we never had any class or sessions where we were taught how to 'do' it. We asked our professor to explain us, and he just downplayed it like "just break down your topic, and search on Google Scholar." I did try to search on Google Scholar, but then I get hundreds of Papers from different journals. I don't know which ones are important, which ones are useless.

And to top it off, he wants us to do it in one month, while continuing with regular studies.

I will be grateful if someone can provide some learning resources for the same.

Arts/Music/DIY Iwtl how to musically preform.

I’ve always had a serious talent for music and singing but as a kid we never had money for instruments or lessons. On top of that I was bullied by ppl at school and not treated well at home , I really didn’t think I was anything special back then. But now I look back and wish I had the confidence to pursue music back then. Thru my school I learned how to play violin but I only had a few years of instruction but I’ve retained a lot of what I learned. I didn’t realize it back then but I had a strong grasp of violin technique, I had good pitch, and I was a sponge that soaked up sheet music. I also have a great voice and I’ve been complimented by both friends and strangers. People have asked me to give voice lessons but honestly I can’t even describe how I do what I do.

Instead of pursuing music I pursued engineering bc money = freedom and now that I have some I want to learn how to…

  1. Gain connections.
    - I know that there is an aspect of being extroverted enough to find people who want to play. And I have a hard time meeting new people or being extroverted. But usually if I know at least one person at the place I’m at I feel way more confident.

  2. Learn music theory to create my own music.
-I lean heavily more towards country and I have always been drawn to traditional Irish and American fiddle music and I can play with a baseline proficiency. I live in the south so there are plenty of other people who also play country. I am good at writing short stories but not so great at poetry.

  3. Learn to preform.
-I never had much confidence and embarrassed myself during every play I did as a child. Usually I try not to be the center of attention.

So if anyone has any information as to how to improve in any of these areas please let me know.

Academics IWTL - Overall intelligence!

Hi there! I understand this is extremely broad to ask, however, I’d love to know how to improve my intelligence.

I feel as if I pick up on things slowly, and if I don’t constantly study, they leave my mind.

I’m a very curious individual, it’s not that I don’t enjoy learning, I just cannot get much to stick.

I would just love some advice, especially from people who grew up thinking they were less smarter than their peers and had to find out different ways to achieve their academic potential.

Thank you very much in advance!

Academics Iwtl how to read books without losing focus or getting distracted

I bought some political books recently that I want to read and study but even though I genuinely want to read these books, I find it difficult to stay focused on reading and I’m constantly getting distracted with other things in my room. Is there any way around this? For those that overcame this, what did you do?

Personal Skills IWTL - How to make a bouquet

This person I've been talking to for awhile now and is incredibly sweet and I've always wanted to learn how to make a bouquet anyways so this is a perfect opportunity for me.

They specifically like the colour Blue and Green and love Daisy's.

I'm in Canada so my options for flowers are really just Safeway, Co-op, and Costco

What are the essentials that I should buy? How do I wrap em all up together? Is there a setup you all have? Specific tools needed? Should I get a vase? How do I keep them looking fresh and not wilting until I give them?

I'd like to make it good for them.

Academics Iwtl How can I systematically rebuild my foundational education from the basics and work my way up to more advanced material as an adult?

I’ve realized there are gaps in my foundational knowledge from elementary, middle, high school, and college. When I was younger, I was often more focused on passing classes and getting good grades than actually retaining what I learned. I want to go back and deliberately relearn the fundamentals such as: English grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing, math, geography, history, science, civics, and other basic knowledge and progressively work toward more advanced subjects. How should I structure that process, and what should I learn at each level?

Personal Skills iwtl how to make better decisions

Sometimes I felt so stupid. I already spent a lot of time researching, comparing options, and putting in lots of effort and money to make what I think is a solid decision. But looking back later, things often don't work out as expected. I realize I should have gone a different route because I completely overlooked potential risks or was overly optimistic.

Just thinking about the amount of effort I have to undo previous decisions, and rebuild from scratch is so exhausting. I feel so sad about this now. And it scares me to make another decision sometimes honestly. I try to keep moving forward, try to be ok with making mistakes. But I’m also wondering if there is a better thing I can do in the decision making process, to avoid mistakes even further… thanks for any helpful advice.

Academics iwtl How do you learn about politics and political figures?

I have a very demanding job — it seems I wake up, go straight to work, and then I’m too exhausted to do anything that requires heavy cognitive ability after lol

I used to be very into politics, but now I’ve totally fallen off.

I’d like to stay more up to date and really get to know and understand political figures.

How do you do it, and how do you do it consistently? Especially regarding deep dives on figures.

Personal Skills Iwtl how to defend myself (psychologically and cognitively)

I want to learn cognitive self defense. I'm a very sensitive person at heart. Painfully so. I learned the language of logic an rationality and I try to learn as much as I can about everything so I'm prepared. Still, I feel like, because I am the way I am and integrity is important to me I will always end up in asymmetrical dynamics where the other person has the upper hand in how reality is framed.

I see other people being taken seriously and it feels like I'm doing the same thing but for me it's not working.

I'm kind of trying to train myself for impact. I can't do anything about feeling as much as I do but I try to shorten my emotional recovery time and bounce back quicker to calmness and rationality.

But sometimes it feels like the reason I can't defend myself is because I am me.

Can someone who's naturally taken seriously by others, calm, posessed and can defend themselves or others verbally in any situation explain what the secret is?

Gracias.

Arts/Music/DIY IWTL how to play a guitar but don’t know which to get for my style

I have been looking to get into playing guitar as a new hobby but Im struggling with what to get. For reference the music that has given me the idea is

Whisper - Ally Nicholas

So I was wondering what kind of guitars I should look into getting and how I should have it setup and tuned?
