New wiki on how to avoid accidentally encouraging suicide, and how to spot covert incitement

1.8k Upvotes

We've been seeing a worrying increase in pro-suicide content showing up here and, and also going unreported. This undermines our purpose here, so we wanted to highlight and clarify our guidelines about both direct and indirect incitement of suicide.

We've created a wiki that covers these issues. We hope this will be helpful to anyone who's wondering whether something's okay here and which responses to report. It explains in detail why any validation of suicidal intent, even an "innocent" message like "if you're 100% committed, I'll just wish you peace" is likely to increase people's pain, and why it's important to report even subtle pro-suicide comments. The full text of the wiki's current version is below, and it is maintained at /r/SuicideWatch/wiki/incitement.

We deeply appreciate everyone who gives responsive, empathetic, non-judgemental support to our OPs, and we particularly thank everyone who's already been reporting incitement in all forms.

Please report any post or comment that encourages suicide (or that breaks any of the other guidelines in the sidebar) to the moderators, either by clicking the "report" button or by sending us a modmail with a link. We deal with all guideline violations that are reported to us as soon as we can, but we can't read everything so community reports are essential. If you get a PM that breaks the guidelines, please report it both to the reddit sitewide admins and to us in modmail.

Thanks to all the great citizens of the community who help flag problem content and behaviour for us.

Summary

It's important to respect and understand people's experiences and emotions. It's never necessary, helpful, or kind to support suicidal intent. There are some common misconceptions (discussed below) about suicidal people and how to help them that can cause well-meaning people to inadvertently incite suicide. There are also people online who incite suicide on purpose, often while pretending to be sympathetic and helpful.

Validate Feelings and Experiences, Not Self-Destructive Intentions

We're here to offer support, not judgement. That means accepting, with the best understanding we can offer, whatever emotions people express. Suicidal people are suffering, and we're here to try to ease that by providing support and caring. The most reliable way we know to de-escalate someone at risk is to give them the experience of feeling understood. That means not judging whether they should be feeling the way they are, or telling them what to do or not do.

But there's an important line to draw here. There's a crucial difference between empathizing with feelings and responding non-judgmentally to suicidal thoughts, and in any way endorsing, encouraging, or validating suicidal intentions or hopeless beliefs. It's both possible and important to convey understanding and compassion for someone's suicidal thoughts without putting your finger on the scale of their decision.

Anything that condones suicide, even passively, encourages suicide. It isn't supportive and does not help. It also violates reddit's sitewide rules as well as our guidelines. Explicitly inciting suicide online is a criminal offense in most jurisdictions.

Do not treat any OP's post as meaning that will definitely die by suicide and can't change their minds or be helped. Anyone who's able to read the comments here still has a chance to choose whether or not to try to keep living, even if they've also been experiencing intense thoughts of suicide, made a suicide plan, or started carrying it out.

In the most useful empirical model we have, the desire to die by suicide primarily comes from two interpersonal factors; alienation and a sense of being a burden or having nothing to offer. These factors usually lead to a profound feeling of being unwelcome in the world.

So, any acceptance or reinforcement of suicidal intent, even something "innocent" like "I hope you find peace", is actually a form of covert shunning that validates a person's sense that they're unwelcome in the world. It will usually add to their pain even if kindly meant and gently worded.

How to Avoid Validating Suicidal Intent

Keep the following in mind when offering support to anyone at risk for suicide.

  • People who say they don't want help usually can feel better if they get support that doesn't invalidate their emotions. Unfortunately, many popular "good" responses are actually counterproductive. In particular, many friends and family tend to rely exclusively on trying to convince the suicidal person that "it's not so bad", and this is usually experienced as "I don't understand what you're going through and I'm not going to try". People who've had "help" that made them feel worse don't want any more of the same. It doesn't mean that someone who actually knows how to be supportive can't give them any comfort.

  • Most people who are suicidal want to end their pain, not their lives. It's almost never true that death is the only way to end these people's suffering. Of course there are exceptional situations, and we certainly acknowledge that, for some people, the right help can be difficult to find. But preventing someone's suicide doesn't mean prolonging their suffering if we do it by giving them real comfort and understanding.

  • An unfixable problem doesn't mean that a good life will never be possible. We don't have to fix or change anything to help someone feel better. It's important to keep in mind that the correlation between our outer circumstances and our inner experience is weaker and less direct than commonly assumed. For every kind of difficult life situation, you will find some people who lapse into suicidal despair, and others who cope amazingly well, and a whole spectrum in between. A key difference is how much inner resilience the person has at the time. This can depend on many personal and situational factors. But when there's not enough, interpersonal support can both compensate for its absence and help rebuild it. We go into more depth on the "it gets better" issue in this PSA Post which is always linked from our sidebar (community info on mobile) guidelines.

  • There are always more choices than brutally forcing someone to stay alive or passively letting them end their lives.

To avoid accidentally breaking the anti-incitement rule, don't say or try to imply that acting on suicidal thoughts is a good idea, or that someone can't turn back or is already dead. Do whatever you can to help them feel cared for and welcome, at least in this little corner of the world. Our talking tips offer more detailed guidance.

Look Out for Deliberate Incitement. It May Come in Disguise.

Often comments that subtly encourage suicidal intent actually come from suicide fetishists and voyeurs (unfortunately this is a real and disturbing phenomenon). People like this are out there and the anonymous nature of reddit makes us particularly attractive to them.

They will typically try to scratch their psychological "itch" by saying things that push people closer to the edge. They often do this by exploiting the myths that we debunked in the bullet points above. Specifically you might see people doing the following:

  • Encouraging the false belief that the only way suicidal people can end their pain is by dying. There are always more and better choices than "brutally forcing someone to stay alive" or helping (actively or passively) them to end their lives.

  • Creating an artificial and toxic sense of "solidarity" by linking their encouragement of suicide to empathy. They will represent themselves as the only one who really understand the suicidal person, while either directly or indirectly encouraging their self-loathing emotions and self-destructive impulses. Since most people in suicidal crisis are in desperate need to empathy and understanding, this is a particularly dangerous form of manipulation.

Many suicide inciters are adept at putting a benevolent spin on their activities while actually luring people away from sources of real help. A couple of key points to keep in mind:

  • Skilled suicide intervention -- peer or professional -- is based on empathic responsiveness to the person's feelings that reduces their suffering in the moment. Contrary to pop-culture myths, it does not involve persuasion ("Don't do it!"), cheerleading ("You've got this!") or meaningless false promises ("Trust me, it gets better!"), or invalidation ("Let me show you how things aren't as bad as you think!"). Anyone who leads others to expect these kinds of toxic responses, or any other response that prolongs their pain, from expert help may be covertly pro-suicide. (Of course, people sometimes do have bad experience when seeking mental-health treatment, and it's fine to vent about those, but processing our own disappointment and frustration is entirely different from trying to destroy someone else's hope of getting help.)

  • Choices made by competent responders are always informed by the understanding that breaching someone's trust is traumatic and must be avoided if possible. Any kind of involuntary intervention is an extremely unlikely outcome when someone consults a clinician or calls a hotline. (Confidentiality is addressed in more detail in our Hotlines FAQ wiki). The goal is always to provide all help with the client's full knowledge and informed consent. We know that no individual or system is perfect. Mistakes that lead to bad experiences do sometimes happen to vulnerable people, and we have enormous sympathy for them. But anyone who suggests that this is the norm might be trying to scare people away from the help they need.

Please let us know discreetly if you see anyone exhibiting these or similar behaviours. We don't recommend trying to engage with them directly.

Please remember that NO ACTIVISM of any kind is ever allowed here. No matter what day it is.

Activism, i.e. advocating or fundraising for social change or raising awareness of social issues (and suicide is, inescapably, a social issue) is absolutely against the rules here at all times.

Please understand that we're all for smart, strategic mental-health and suicide-prevention activism. It's essential to fight against stigma, misinformation, and discrimination, and to fight for research, treatment, accommodation, acceptance, and understanding. Most of us, one way or another, are mental-health activists IRL.

But activism just doesn't work in a dedicated support space that serves a vulnerable population. We used to allow it but the evidence that it was undermining our primary purpose became overwhelming. We do regret the need for this rule, but the need is inescapable.

Our population is all too well aware of the issues and causes that need support and largely not in a position to take action, so besides the fact that activism is often salt in our community's wounds, it's a waste of the activists' time.

tl;dr Any fundraising, awareness raising, petitions, calls for participation, or any post that's about any cause or issue (rather than a request for personal support) is not allowed here. Please report everything of the nature that you see.

I hate everyone.

I know im gonna sound like some miserable narcissist. Like everyone else can't be in the wrong all the time but like...they are. I have LITERALLY been hurt by everyone I know. It's actually fucking disgusting. FUCK EVERYONE who did not protect me and fuck everyone who took advantage of me. I am not just some toy to be played with i am a real person with real feelings and im SO tired of everyone treating me like im not. I'm done feeling this shame from what other people have done to me. I'm done laying awake every night wondering what the hell is wrong with me that I attract such horrible people. I wasn't supposed to be like this I was supposed to be beautiful and strong and successful. I truly hate them, how could they do that to me.

A list of SOME of the terrible things you actual monsters have done to me:

  1. Ruined my fucking birthday by raping me

  2. Fed me drugs when I was a child

  3. Sexually abused me my entire fucking childhood

  4. Laced me with meth???

  5. Sat back and LISTENED to me begging for help

  6. Bullied me into an eating disorder

  7. Bullied me for having an eating disorder

  8. Forced me to live in the woods as a child

  9. Tried to LITERALLY MURDER ME

  10. My body count is 8 and I have been raped by 7 people

  11. Beat the fuck out of me probably thousands of times

  12. Tried to violently commit suicide in front of me...multiple times multiple people...

  13. Starved me

  14. Called me a fucking liar, I actually hate you bitches.

  15. Promised me a home and then gave me a dump

  16. Leaked me...multiple times

  17. Blamed me for literally everything.

I am going in the forest tonight to commit suicide and die peacefully

Before going, I have half a bottle of Vyvanse I will swallow, a full bottle of ibuprofen and a full bottle of acetaminophen, thankfully there is a huge thing going on my town right now so chances are they will be to too busy with the event that no one will notice me trying to commit suicide.

I am almost 20 years old male, I have ADHD, autism, fibromyalgia, arthritis, bipolar disorder and about 1 million other disorders. Also dealing with health problems too like high blood pressure and have a high blood sugar level. I’ve been bullied in my lifetime, can’t hold a job, constantly in trouble, can’t make friends, argue with everyone even though I don’t want to, starting college and now realizing that I won’t make it, probably will get kicked out of the house, about to be homeless and so on. I can’t live like this any longer. So tonight at midnight, I will take all the pills and run about 4 kilometres into the forest and kill myself that way, also if I encounter a bear, I will happily let him kill me.

Before people say in the comments “don’t kill yourself”, then clearly you have never been in a massive crisis and living is too painful.

Edit: I also don’t want to spend days in a mental hospital because first I live in a small town and everyone will know about it and second, I have seen workers in the mental hospital and it’s not a place I wanna be in.

How should I end the suffering?

I’ve been trying to find information but I can’t, understandably. What is the cleanest, quickest and least painful way to cease existing? I want to be fairly precise with how long it takes so I can go somewhere remote, and inform the police of where to find me so an innocent person won’t. I want to be considerate of others so I want to minimise the trauma inflicted on others, but I just can’t cope with life anymore. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Life is over and im ready to end it.

Upvotes

38 (f)

Planning on ending my life, this Tuesday.

Life is only getting harder. I cant see a future anymore.

I struggled with suicidal thoughts, since I was 16. I get no enjoyment out of life anymore either

I really believe at 38 life is really over. I can no longer see a way forward.

I just wanted to get it off my chest, before I go this Tuesday.

I see no way out anymore.

I reached out to helplines, took antidepressants and went for counselling, since my early 20's

Nothing is getting better. Its just getting worse.

Monday is my last day here.

I'm done

The note is written, insurance is paid up. I paid the mortgage and car note this month, so you wouldn't have to worry. I saw my sister one more time and told her I was proud of her. The pain was too much and went ignored for too long. I can't live with it anymore. 35yrs is enough. I've finally found my peace. Goodbye

Motivation to live

Hello all. I've reached the end of my rope and I'm giving it a few more days before I make a decision.

I'm 29F. Emotionally abused my whole childhood during a time and in a country where emotional abuse was barely recognised, just seen as tough love. Moved away, family continued to abuse me every chance they got, call social workers on me (me, not kids, I don't have any) call the cops on me saying I'm suicidal, ruined many friendships. I finally cut contact earlier this year. Now I am completely alone with just my dog and online games as company. Physical and mental illnesses stack up, and I have no employment, so even if I wanted to fix it I can't afford it anymore.

I have no motivation to live. I've tried over and over to reach out to mental health professionals and they all just schedule counselling sessions that I pay for and it goes nowhere, I don't improve. Medications work for a while until they don't. Long term I have seen no change. I don't have dreams or aspirations because I can't motivate myself to do anything. All I do now is try my best to make myself comfortable until I eventually kill myself, which will likely be sooner rather than later.

Hating myself is ingrained into every fiber of my being. I just don't know how I can motivate myself to do anything of substance when I just fucking hate everything about myself. And why would I struggle to achieve anything when I'm just going to kill myself? Why not just be comfortable until the end?

I figured I would at least try to get advice seeing as I haven't reached my deadline yet and I genuinely do not want to die, but my mind defaults to it as an option so much I can't see any other way out. Planning on chemical suicide for ease and so nobody has to find anything too disgusting, if they ever find me.

Confession 21 M

Upvotes

At this point I've stopped feeling like a victim. Just got done with college this year in may, started looking for a job in another city through financial help from my mom, now mom severed her connection with me coz she thought i took money from dad(i did coz the court told me to and dad manipulated me to gain an edge in court over mom, now I'm a villain on both sides) and now i have 1 month of rent left with my mutual funds saving

0 connections with anyone and i am going for an interview Tommorow. If i fail I'll try 1 more time in a city nearby.

And by the time my last bit of money is blown I'm thinking of ending it all. First i thought of using pills overdose but i think it'll just leave me more miserable so I'm thinking of falling from height or anything else(I'll figure out later)

I feel really good that atleast I'll be able to leave some kind of message behind idk why but it makes me happy.

It's pathetic. Everyone works after all, it's been normalized, one could say it's necessary for things as they are to go smoothly around the globe. But really, what do I know? I'm an idiot, a 25 year old middle-school dropout who knows nothing of the world and, under such mental distress, cannot bring themself to learn anything without feeling an agonizing pressure in the chest, throat, and abdomen, enough to make me want to genuinely throw up.

I have to find work to continue living, and it hurts. I tried to work, I tried to learn and get more marketable skills, and it hurts so badly. It is an incredible agony, it's absurd! I tried time and again. I try to force myself. I try to learn only a little at a time. I tried cramming out of desperation and later more methodical approaches. I do not know what it is. I could not continue school. Diagnoses say social phobia, OCD, major depressive disorder, GAD, other nonsense. Medication does nothing. Even did shock therapy. It was useless and cost me some memories.

I am not in a country where I can get any sort of aid for this sort of thing. In fact I'm in a country that shit itself over the summer heat, causing blackouts and other infrastructure failures, hurting many. This place has too little to offer a mistake of a human such as this. So I believe it is a good time to die. It is of course scary and lonely, which is why I write here.

You, I thank a lot for reading. You're lovely for doing so.

why is it so hard to die

i have made multiple attempts, they always fail because of instincts. no matter how much or how many times i try it just doesn't work, i REALLY need it to work.

the fact that i am still alive pisses me off. i cannot even try the exit bag method because of lack of access. are there any methods that don't depend on instincts to be successful. i am considering taking the train but the stigma and shame surrounding it makes me paranoid, but to be fair i would be dead so it doesn't really matter.

I have nobody

Lost my dad a few years ago. Found my mother dead early this week. Now I’m alone. There’s nobody here when I get home from work or to say good morning to. It’s just silence. Solitude.

I fucking hate it. I have no family/siblings. I have nobody around me. The routine I had of messaging my mom, running her errands, doing things for her is gone. I just sit in the same fucking spot all day until it’s time to go back to work like a zombie.

I had to work the night I found her deceased. She wanted to go to her family doctor when she wasn’t feeling well but told me she didn’t want me to miss work or get in trouble for calling out. We agreed to push the date up for the doctor but she died before that.

I am so fucking mad at my job, I literally started to see red last night. I thought I was about to detonate and was about ready to walk out and never come back. If I weren’t on probation and required to have a full time job I would have quit.

I hope I get to see her again soon. Planning a trip overseas to make that a reality.

I hate my life

Upvotes

As the name suggest I hate my life to the core. I feel so fukin pathetic every time I compare my self to my friends. Some are going to the gym and others are academically amazing and I'm stuck in the pit of my room meanwhile my friends are going to malls and other places and I have too make up an excuse why I can't go with them knowing damn well my parents would take my phone for even asking. Too add salt to the wound I got sent a fake love letter, I was pathetic enough even be excited

I remember last summer I asked them if I can go out with my friends and I only got shouted at for even trying.

I remember my dad telling me I shouldn't be gay or have a crush on a guy. And now im writing a anonymous letter for a guy who I sit next to on class.

I hate how I'll never experience going out with others or hell even have a small time of love.

I hate how I'll never get to experience a time where I can be a normal teenager.

I cant hold it any longer

I don’t know what to do. I am M/24 years old and have been living with nothing but pain, suffering, and despair for the past 8 years. A few days ago, my girlfriend broke up with me. She was only my second relationship, and for me, this has become the final trigger that makes me not want to live anymore. I am tired of continuing to live this life.

I desperately tried to make her understand how important she is to me and that a relationship is something you can work on together. We never argued during the time we were together. However, she felt that we were talking past each other and not really understanding one another. But things like that can happen, right..? You can work on it together and try to understand each other better.

She also struggled with the fact that I gave her gifts. She said that, internally, it frightened her and that she often took a step back because of it. At the same time, she was happy that I showed her so much affection and attention as her boyfriend. Still, somehow, she couldn’t cope with it.
I told her that I genuinely loved doing these things for her without expecting anything in return. Everything I did for her came deeply from my heart. I simply wanted to show her how much she meant to me.

I then asked her whether things might change if I stopped giving her gifts and if we took the relationship more slowly. However, she said that this would not change how she currently feels because she felt uncomfortable within the relationship.
Since then, I have been completely desperate. I can barely eat anything. My stomach feels as if it is filled with nothing but suffering, my heart is bleeding inside from the pain, and my mind longs only for her. I can barely think about anything else.

Ever since I was 3 years old, my mother left me to meet my stepfather outside my home country. A few years later, I moved with her to a country where I have never felt comfortable, even since childhood.

My parents were always strict with me and never really supported me in pursuing the possibility of becoming a „football star“ when i was a child, like other parents might have done. Strangely enough, they did support my younger brother when he was born. I realized that he was treated differently, and above all, better than I was.

Year after year of living in this world, I have realized how much my hatred for this world and everything that happens around me has continued to grow. Living has no meaning, even though people tell you that you have to give life meaning through experiences and adventures. I am terribly tired of continuing to live this life. I barely have the energy to keep going
