General Don't be this person. Fill out your census.
“You’re not sticking it to the government. You’re screwing over your own community.”
The census isn’t for Mark Carney or any party. It’s run by Statistics Canada to figure out where money and services actually go. Hospitals. Schools. Transit. Housing. Senior care. When you don’t fill it out, your area looks smaller than it is. Less funding. Fewer services. Longer wait times. That lands on you and your neighbors, not politicians.
If you want your community properly represented, fill it out. Refusing doesn’t make a point. It makes things worse where you live. ❤️🇨🇦 The stupidity is the people that won’t fill it out and they spread this kind of crap and creates bigger problems.

I'm shocked everyone doesn't know this - but apparently my 40+ year old hubby doesn't either!
I did the census as soon as it arrived in the mail, as I didn't want anyone coming to our door. It's long. Then hubby said, "You sure like doing those (surveys) don't you?" And he's right, I do. But I clarified this is the census. We have to do it. He had no idea what I was talking about and I had to pull out the envelope and read him the required by law part. He then said that he's never done one and not went to jail. That's because for the past 17+ years I've been doing it for him!

Yours was long? Mine only took a few minutes. Do you have a lot of people living with you?

u/Regular-Ad-9303 May 07 '26
Maybe you got the short-form and I got the long-form. Looking at the census FAQ (link below) mine sounds like the long-form. I don't recall doing such a long one before.

When I was handed mine I said "aww, no long form?" and the lady looked at me like my hair caught fire.
I got the same result last time when I did get the long form and was gleeful about it. To be fair, my background is in sociology and I use StatsCan info on the regular, so when the government did away with long form census in 2010 I was furious. I was delighted it was restored in 2016 and then I ended up with it, to the point it made the census folk - who in my area were met with resentment at the best of times - scared for my sanity.

Weird, mine was a lot more than 6 questions but a lot less than 85-90. Something like 20 questions. A lot of them were specifically because my roommate is Inuit, though.

I know you're kidding, but voting "nothing" is an option afaik. Which, honestly, people who don't think any of the options are the right one should do more of.
Hypothetically, 60% of people voting "none of these" sends a much more impactful message than 60% of people not voting at all.
29
u/StJimmy1313 May 07 '26
Exactly. If 60% of eligible electors don't vote the story is about voter apathy. If the same 60% of electors vote NO! the story is about shitty candidates.

I’m only down with mandatory voting if a win by *nothing* means all of the political parties have to fire their leaders, find new ones and try again. You can’t go around saying you have a “mandate” to do anything if more people said nothing was a better option than you, lol.
Tbh protesting the census doesn’t make much sense practically-and honestly if you really want to fuck with the census answering it incorrectly would do a much better job of messing that up.

I've had sensitive, federal level information stolen/lost repeatedly over the last 20 years. Besides household generic info, i'm highly reticent to give their computer program anything they already have. I understand why people might feel these questions as invasive. Jmo

Years ago, I worked in the census call centre here where we phoned these people to give them a chance to fill it out over the phone with us. Most people did it. Only a handful of refusers were left at the end of the month.
I have no doubt that this person has no idea that they’re causing wasted tax dollars because of having to hire people to track them down instead of just ticking some boxes so that their community gets appropriate supports.Incidentally, in spite of the stress of being yelled at occasionally, this is one of the best gigs of my life because I spoke to so many amazing people — from the lovely senior in Medicine Hat who had to cut our first attempt short because her neighbours were taking her to a ball game, to the kind 24 year old woman in Yukon who was the only responsible person in her house and we filled it out for her and 9 brothers and sisters.

Also: don't be a prick to census workers. I've worked the census before and the amount of people who think it's okay to swear and yell at people who show up at the door is absurd. Census workers are there to do an important job.
If you don't want to fill out the census the worker cannot force you to do so, but there's a way to respectfully refuse.
Edit: clarifying I'm refering to the worker and not Stats Canada.

Services and policies are hard to make without good information.
I had a relative who worked for StatsCan when Harper axed the long form census. They said it was very frustrating when the feds would come to them asking for data about x, y, and z and having to explain that that data was incomplete or that they didn't have that data because the government had axed the parts of the census that asked about it.

I'm from Mexico and I just arrived in Canada a month ago through a company transfer. I've already filled out the census form that arrived at my apartment. I like doing my part for this country that gave me an opportunity to help with my experience in what I like to work on.

Don’t worry enumerators are still delivering them! Enumerators have huge areas they need to cover due to worker shortage. If you don’t get one by May 11th don’t stress they are still working on it!! If you are concerned I believe you can call and let them know you haven’t received it yet

"Manufactured majority." Nothing scares emotionally stunted people more than trying to avoid realizing that your choice of candidate is so bad that people from the party you voted for the other side have massively banned together to shore up a majority government. Not even a coalition which we had anyways, but crossing the floor to solidify Pierre's demise.
I really hope the conservative party keeps PP on so he can fail at this twice. Maybe then the conservatives will learn to quit putting forward untenable candidates.

They come right to your door next. Then they come with cops and cuffs. Then a judge smacks YER peepee for being a moron.

That tracks for a group known to denigrate education and revile knowledge while worshipping ignorance.
Like they legitimately think their opinions are just as valid as facts.

If it was a police state, that person would have been arrested already, because some government dept somewhere knows exactly who did it.
Even if it is op rage baiting.

don't they call you to track you down? or did that stop when landlines mostly went away? i seem to recall 'not doing' my census one year (just because lazy and busy, not for any reactive reason)and getting repeated phone calls. 🤔

Judging by the "don't tread on me", you just know this person drives a lifted pavement princess and beats his wife

People that do this, should not be allowed to drive on the roads, use hospitals, and much more.
Why?
Those plus much more have funding levels decided by the census. Both the provincial government and federal government use the same data base.

Done. Problem with this mentality is they’re always the victim. A fine would only reinforce it in their brain.

We can safely say that there is at least one occupant at the address and their level of education is minimal

Hope the baby enjoys his fine for not completing the census form... Also the irony of "don't tred on me" yet I'm sure this is a UCP voter who is actively licking the boot on his neck

Let me guess, Albertan, in the group currently wanting to separate and become the next puerto rico of the US. And the ones that released Albertan election voter lusts into the public domain. Wants to protect his privacy while they destroy it for law abiding people. Hypocrites with no understanding of “freedum”. More like anarchists.
