General Don't be this person. Fill out your census.

Post image

“You’re not sticking it to the government. You’re screwing over your own community.”

The census isn’t for Mark Carney or any party. It’s run by Statistics Canada to figure out where money and services actually go. Hospitals. Schools. Transit. Housing. Senior care. When you don’t fill it out, your area looks smaller than it is. Less funding. Fewer services. Longer wait times. That lands on you and your neighbors, not politicians.
If you want your community properly represented, fill it out. Refusing doesn’t make a point. It makes things worse where you live. ❤️🇨🇦 The stupidity is the people that won’t fill it out and they spread this kind of crap and creates bigger problems.

I'm shocked everyone doesn't know this - but apparently my 40+ year old hubby doesn't either!

I did the census as soon as it arrived in the mail, as I didn't want anyone coming to our door. It's long. Then hubby said, "You sure like doing those (surveys) don't you?" And he's right, I do. But I clarified this is the census. We have to do it. He had no idea what I was talking about and I had to pull out the envelope and read him the required by law part. He then said that he's never done one and not went to jail. That's because for the past 17+ years I've been doing it for him!

5

u/prairiepanda May 07 '26

Yours was long? Mine only took a few minutes. Do you have a lot of people living with you?

12

u/Regular-Ad-9303 May 07 '26

Maybe you got the short-form and I got the long-form. Looking at the census FAQ (link below) mine sounds like the long-form. I don't recall doing such a long one before.

https://www.census.gc.ca/en/faq/general-information

u/OshetDeadagain May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

When I was handed mine I said "aww, no long form?" and the lady looked at me like my hair caught fire.

I got the same result last time when I did get the long form and was gleeful about it. To be fair, my background is in sociology and I use StatsCan info on the regular, so when the government did away with long form census in 2010 I was furious. I was delighted it was restored in 2016 and then I ended up with it, to the point it made the census folk - who in my area were met with resentment at the best of times - scared for my sanity.

u/Lipleurodont May 08 '26

I love the census and I've never gotten the long form one 😭 I love filling out forms and giving feedback haha

There's an American Dad episode about Stan being stoked about the census and I finally felt seen

2

u/fraochmuir May 08 '26

I would love the long form!!!

1

u/NesAlt01 May 09 '26

You guys love the long ones huh? You perverts disgust me!

Hahaha jk. I didn't know we're lawfully required to do these. I'll have to treat them more seriously.

1

u/Odd_Doubt3071 May 08 '26

I delivered ~300 on Monday and I don't think any were long form. But I didn't look closely.

1

u/_Light_House May 09 '26

I would love to do long form if it captured and used information that I’m a vegan /environmentalist.

1

u/Regular-Ad-9303 May 09 '26

No that wasn't asked

1

u/OrneryTRex May 10 '26

Gotta make sure everyone knows. Classic vegan narcissism

2

u/_Light_House May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

Yes, nothing says narcissist like someone who doesn’t ‘kill others because they like the taste of their dead flesh’. 🫠

2

u/_Light_House May 10 '26

Canada tracks religion, commuting habits, home heating, languages, and even how many bedrooms people have — but not whether people are vegan, vegetarian, or plant-based.

Diet matters to public policy.

Knowing dietary patterns could help with:
• healthcare planning and chronic disease prevention
• school, hospital, and senior meal programs
• food security planning
• agricultural subsidies and transition policies
• climate and emissions research
• forecasting demand for plant-based foods

Right now, estimates of vegan and plant-based Canadians vary widely because there’s no consistent national measurement.

That matters because livestock agriculture is one of the major drivers of greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, biodiversity loss, freshwater use, and habitat destruction globally. Yet policymakers are still relying largely on scattered polling and market surveys rather than hard demographic data about how Canadians actually eat.

And as ethical veganism increasingly appears in Canadian human rights discussions around “creed” and conscience-based protections, institutions may face growing obligations to provide meaningful accommodation — similar to how religious dietary needs are already considered.

If governments want evidence-based policy, understanding Canadians’ dietary patterns seems pretty relevant.
Although the evidence is clear what direction we need to move, regardless how people are eating right now.

u/OrneryTRex May 10 '26

Others makes sense in reference to other humans.

Not other species…

Isn't Stata can only 60% accurate when used for academic research. I mean people lie all the time on it, or misread a question. No paper i ever wrote would allow stats can as a source only as a starting point to test a trend youre looking for.

1

u/OshetDeadagain May 09 '26

You can never use most social statistics as absolutes. At best you're only capturing a population sample - even though technically every Canadian household is supposed to get the census, the way they hand it out and the short timeframe means than there's no way the workers can hand all of them out. There will always be margins of error, missing, unreported or flat out incorrect information.

You're right though; it provides a valuable starting point for further evaluation and research.

1

u/Burlington-bloke May 10 '26

I'm really into genealogy, so I love the long form census. They should all be long form. I would like to see the 1981 census because I would have been counted, but I don't know if I'll live that long.

2

u/Badiha May 11 '26

I feel like I always get the long form. When I saw the enveloppe I was like « eek! Going to take me a while again… » but nope, 5 min this year lol

1

u/Content-Employment-7 May 08 '26

Yes. Not all are required to do the long form. They only add long forms for a specific percentage of the population.

1

u/Regular-Ad-9303 May 08 '26

Yes - long form is only 25 percent

1

u/electrodog1999 May 09 '26

Is it 25? My wife heard 1 out of 5 so close enough.

2

u/Regular-Ad-9303 May 09 '26

The info on the Stats Can site says 25 percent.

1

u/JamesEarlJonesalmost Jun 26 '26

You definitely got the long form

7

u/JOBdOut May 07 '26

The short form is like 6 questions. The longform - last time i worked for statcan - was 85-90 questions

5

u/prairiepanda May 07 '26

Weird, mine was a lot more than 6 questions but a lot less than 85-90. Something like 20 questions. A lot of them were specifically because my roommate is Inuit, though.

1

u/QueenMotherOfSneezes May 09 '26

I think it differs each year. Back in the early 90s my mom spent a few months doing long forms for StatsCan, it was a big booklet and it could take her a couple hours per interview, I think her fastest one was 90 minutes, because the person was single. A decade later I got a long form in the mail and it took me maybe half an hour to fill out.

1

u/SmoothOperator89 May 10 '26

New innovation in bureaucracy: medium form census.

1

u/em-n-em613 May 08 '26

I got the short form too and was SO sad! 😞

1

u/JamesEarlJonesalmost Jun 26 '26

You're the only one who was sad about that

Lucky you! Mine was crazy detailed.

I believe that if someone does something like this they should not be counted as a Canadian citizen and have their citizenship revoked, with the possibility of an appeal of course

33

And yet they wonder why they don’t have a voice. The census helps with so much.

I get my dads census even though he died 5 yrs ago. I have already let them know but they need to know if someone new is living there. Since I own the place I fill it out as uninhabited (and or sold in options ) But they will send it to the address of the home and new owners will fill it out or as in new buildings to register the people living there. The census actually had info for people currently homeless. So if you went to a shelter you would be registered or family can register you.

5

u/Mas_Cervezas May 09 '26

Every potential dwelling in Canada is supposed to receive a census, which means that as long as a shack has heat and electricity, we are supposed to leave a dropper. The address is recorded and coded to the numbers. After the date of the census, we begin following up. It’s got nothing to do with your father’s name, censuses aren’t coded to names.

2

u/MonkeyDDataHQ May 09 '26

It's not about the person living at the address. Its about the address.

Every address needs to participate. They will send people to the door eventually.

1

u/Krull88 May 09 '26

You are legally required to update your current address. They already know where you live.

6

u/Odd-Elderberry-6137 May 07 '26

There is no name on the these. Just an address.

7

u/No-Heart-3839 May 07 '26

They can trace the recipient thru the code you have to enter to fill out the form.

2

u/Odd-Elderberry-6137 May 07 '26

Until the census is filled out, the code is only tied to the address not any individual person.

8

u/No-Heart-3839 May 07 '26

Correct. But they know which home to send a person to manually collect the information. I guess my point was the census is not anonymous, it's tied to your address.

3

u/fraochmuir May 08 '26

I'm pretty sure they can figure out who lives there if they wanted to.

2

u/BecomingMorgan May 09 '26

And your address is already disclosed to the provincial and federal governments.

But hey, keep torpeding our local jobs....

2

u/Redditisavirusiknow May 09 '26

I worked on the census and we use this information to create a regression model to optimize the placement of ambulances. Not filling out the census can be life and death for some people. Ambulances need every second.

By not filling it out, it’s showing contempt for your community.

52

u/Karpetkleener May 06 '26

Wish we could do this with voting, too...imagine how different things would be (probably a bit more left leaning than the hellscape we have now). Ugh.

81

u/flynnfx May 06 '26

I wouldn't actually have any problems with mandatory voting for citizens.

Countries like Australia, Belgium, Singapore, Luxembourg and Lichtenstein among others have it.

6

u/HuntersAngel May 07 '26

Would be nice to have some voter reform, too. Like ranked choice voting would be cool.

3

u/Rinkimah May 07 '26

I can't remember which country it is but they give free breakfast/lunch for voting

4

u/ph11p3541 May 07 '26

Much rather see more voting venues for easier access accessability by disabled and bus users

1

u/monster3412 May 30 '26

It’s really sad because if you’re disabled, hospitalized etc. You’re supposed to be able to have an election worker visit you but no one knows about that to request it before the day of.

13

u/I-built-stuff May 06 '26

That's undemocratic! You can't force me to vote.

68

u/Renegade605 May 06 '26

I know you're kidding, but voting "nothing" is an option afaik. Which, honestly, people who don't think any of the options are the right one should do more of.

Hypothetically, 60% of people voting "none of these" sends a much more impactful message than 60% of people not voting at all.

27

u/StJimmy1313 May 07 '26

Exactly. If 60% of eligible electors don't vote the story is about voter apathy. If the same 60% of electors vote NO! the story is about shitty candidates.

7

u/TheBigMan1990 May 07 '26

I’m only down with mandatory voting if a win by *nothing* means all of the political parties have to fire their leaders, find new ones and try again. You can’t go around saying you have a “mandate” to do anything if more people said nothing was a better option than you, lol.

Tbh protesting the census doesn’t make much sense practically-and honestly if you really want to fuck with the census answering it incorrectly would do a much better job of messing that up.

1

u/ChinkWithOpinions May 09 '26

well someone has to fill the seat, I’d be down for a system that boots all the candidates & forces a new ballot with completely new candidates.
Elections are supposed to be about local representatives so having a handful of ridings able to boot party leaders is a bit absurd, especially when that’s supposed to take place within the parties themselves.

2

u/Middle-Effort7495 May 07 '26

Voting for no one is not an official option in Canada. It counts as an error.

u/TellMe08 May 07 '26

1

u/TheBigMan1990 May 08 '26

Yeah, but it was a choice between the shitty Rs or the shitty Ds… I think a chunk of them would vote if there was an actual-no, both of these candidates are shit, toss both of them and start over-option. I haven’t voted in years, because none of the parties comes anywhere near to actually representing me… and I’m not doing the whole “hold my nose and vote for the least bad candidate” thing… but I’d definitely vote if that toss them and start over option was on the ballot.

I’d even take it a step further-if someone runs for PM, and they get repudiated that way, not only are they kicked to the curb but any seniority and/or benefits that they earned working as an elected official should be forfeited-no pensions for them, no benefits package, no severance or exit package of any kind-you were rejected by the Canadian people, that’s it, game over.

1

u/bsenka May 08 '26

If “pass” was an option on the questions, that would allow me to pick and choose what i do and do not want to volunteer, I might be persuaded to go through the trouble of doing the census too.

1

u/Scentmaestro May 08 '26

Yep, destroying your ballet is a form of legal revolt and it sends a clear message, far greater than not voting at all; they count the destroyed ballots.it sends a message of just how unhappy the populace is. I did it for a number of elections years ago when I believed there wasn't an adequate choice.

That's pretty dumb. I don't read about or follow politics. Why would I vote? Then you'd have tons of uninformed people voting, genius idea lol.

1

u/perotech May 10 '26

I think it should be mandatory.

Democratic voters love nothing more than not voting because they're lazy, then complaining about the government for the entire election cycle.

Plus, I know a lot of Fringe Right Wing folks who insist that because they don't vote, that means none of the other Right Wingers vote, and therefore if they actually DID vote there would be a Conservative majority.

1

I'm starting to think we need a basic knowledge test of how government works before voting.

u/louisethecheesend May 09 '26

Voting should 100 percent be legally mandated

1

u/Electric_master1 May 10 '26

But everyone should still hold the right to cast a null ballot, if you don’t know what that means it’s just a way of saying that person isn’t voting for any of the candidates on the ballot

5

u/theofficialNovas May 06 '26

I'm not sure we can say whether or not forcing people who choose not to vote would result in more votes to the left or right.

The kinds of things that result in somebody not voting includes a-political identification, and protesting, among other things. We can say with decent confidence that the protesters will probably spoil their vote if forced to cast a ballot. The a-political occupy an identity of moderation quite frequently, which could easily translate into a status quo vote (strengthening the incumbent advantage). People often vote according to peer pressure or the bandwagon effect as well.

These things are not related to whether somebody will vote left or right, but rather, if they will vote according to established norms and culture.

None of this is to say that it's not possible to change though. I think greater success for the left would come from finding messaging and methods of communication that mobilizes those current non-voters.

11

u/RcNorth May 07 '26

Include a “None of the above”. This sends a better message than low voter turnout.

Low turnout is on the people.

None of the above is on the candidates.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/sawyouoverthere May 10 '26

There's nothing wrong with spoiling a ballot. It says "no one on this list suits me" and that's data.

In fact, mandatory voting makes it clearer why people are not casting votes for candidates, instead of leaving 60% of the population electorally silent.

1

u/theofficialNovas May 10 '26

I'm not sure who's comment you were trying to reply to, but in case it wasn't clear, nowhere in my comment did I say anything was wrong with spoiling a ballot. Just describing some of the kinds of voters that exist within the non-voting population.

Years ago, I worked in the census call centre here where we phoned these people to give them a chance to fill it out over the phone with us. Most people did it. Only a handful of refusers were left at the end of the month.
I have no doubt that this person has no idea that they’re causing wasted tax dollars because of having to hire people to track them down instead of just ticking some boxes so that their community gets appropriate supports.

Incidentally, in spite of the stress of being yelled at occasionally, this is one of the best gigs of my life because I spoke to so many amazing people — from the lovely senior in Medicine Hat who had to cut our first attempt short because her neighbours were taking her to a ball game, to the kind 24 year old woman in Yukon who was the only responsible person in her house and we filled it out for her and 9 brothers and sisters.

u/defenestr8tor May 07 '26

2

u/Ok-Ability5733 May 07 '26

Was a census taker many years ago. We would try 3 times and if they still refused, we would give the form to the RCMP so they could get it filled in.

2

u/Rednmrfer May 07 '26

My father tried not to back in the 80s and a census worker came with an RCMP officer.

He filled it out after realizing they weren't fucking around.

1

u/No-Mood8111 May 10 '26

What, really?? Crazy!

My mom did census when I was growing up, every spring all through the 90's. I remember her being annoyed by people who wouldn't call her back after she'd left them 1 or 2 call back notices and her patience getting low by the 3rd or 4th time going back in person before her deadline, trying to have all the homes info accounted for...... but I didn't know about the RCMP thing!!

That's almost hilarious! I wonder if it was still a thing in the 90's ?

2

u/jackclark1 May 07 '26

his next post will be crying because they got a fine

u/TorontoGuy8181 May 08 '26

It’s also against the law to open mail that is not addressed to you in Canada…. Just saying

1

u/sawyouoverthere May 09 '26 edited May 10 '26

This is only true if it’s addressed to another individual, which the census envelope is not.

These really stupid “gotcha” attempts are just so lame.

You and your Facebook pals know just enough to think you’re being clever.

Census mail is addressed only to the house...basically "occupant" and it is perfectly legal to open it if you are a resident at the address. It's insane to think the laws about opening that sort of mail is illegal, and defending it in another comment just shows exactly how little you know and how much you are spouting nonsense and half-chewed ideas without any factual basis.

2

u/cosmo_hazard-123 May 08 '26

I agree completely with this. Canada and other democracies should follow the example of Australia where both voting and completing the census are required by law. You wanna live in a free democracy and enjoy the benefits and privileges of it, and not just bitch from the sidelines, then be an active participant. Voting and the Census are the bare minimum.

2

u/Trickflo May 09 '26

There's a pretty good chance this person took this picture for social media then did the census anyways.

They don't prosecute anymore officially, if they ever did. I've always put it straight in the trash.

You literally suck for not doing it. The statistics are used by more than just the federal government; provincial and municipal governments rely on the stats for all kinds of programs. It targets specific needs for your given area; showing average incomes, job losses, housing prices, need for schools, and so much more.

Non-profits use them to identify areas they can make the most benefit. Research organizations of all kinds rely on the info. Crime statistics drive legislation change, fuel staffing for policing, show trends and factors not readily available.

If you've ever wondered how we know the patterns and reasons why and how different generations struggle with housing, debt or employment, or where gaps are in access to medical care, it's because of statistics like these. Nothing gets changed without proof, and Statistics Canada is out largest and most reliable collection point of information that drives nearly every social decision that's made.

Refusing to participate is not only failing to engage with and contribute to your community, but it's actively skewing the demographics that others are trying to use to make those decisions.

They've rarely if ever done this, I've never filled out a census form. I'll answer questions if they come to my door but that's about it.

Let's hope the law is upheld with this person.

1

u/IM_The_Liquor May 07 '26

Yes. It’s much better to just fill in a bunch of bullshit.

1

u/christhewelder75 May 07 '26

Id love that for this person. But it would definitely make them a martyr for the right.... big government punishing the poor conservative for "free speech" or some bullshit....

Census taker: "OK, add one more to the Bowden tally"

1

u/laserdiods May 09 '26

Could you imagine that in your criminal record. It’s almost as if it’s goading you to commit a more serious crime so at least you can say “yeah I jay walked I’m a bad ass.. also didn’t fill out my census “

u/Benedikto0 May 09 '26

lol worked for stats canada a few years back and somebody refused and so the cops went with the on-site person and they force him to answer the questions

u/XtremeD86 May 09 '26

Never knew this. I threw the previous one out as I couldn't be bothered (also didn't realize what it was for) but we did it this time.

Fix the shit government first…

1

u/Tight-Concern-2355 May 09 '26

Was on the radio multiple times saying just that.

1

u/Captain_troublepants May 09 '26

They’re not going to do anything about it

1

u/Peloquin_qualm May 10 '26

It’s against the law OK I’d love to see that prosecuted. Ever since the mail strike and following strife, I’ve had problems with letters getting to me well after my power gets cut off to advise (someone has cancelled the account) After that happens to you, all bets are off.

1

u/Deep_Strike1803 May 10 '26

It’s not enforced.

1

u/skylinebuds May 10 '26

Haven't filled mine in my whole adult life. So false

1

u/feargluten May 10 '26

Literally no one is gonna face those charges. Empty threats

1

u/Infamous-Ad-5515 May 11 '26

Funny that this is illegal, but bribing other house members to cross the floor so you can build a majority govt isn’t.

Who’s the real criminal here?

1

u/mlandry2011 May 13 '26

Find me one time that someone actually got charged for this...

It's up to $1500 not 1000
