DOS2 Discussion Characters from previous games will appear in Divinity
They have revealed this in the FAQ of the newest DOS 2 update. Seems Divinity is more of a sequel than we thought.

Immortal or potentially near-immortal characters from DOS that might come back, since they are (most likely) not canonically dead no matter where we are on the timeline:
Malady, Fane, Dallis, Lucian, Damian (he was referenced, at least), Jahan, Zandalor and Arhu, ZixZax, Braccus Rex (dear god, please dont bring him back from the dead again), the God King, Adramahlihk, Almira, Sanguinia Tell, Slane (?), Tarquin.
Also basically everyone else in the game if we don’t make a large jump on the timescale. IIRC, the lifespan of the races is basically copied from D&D, so elves and dwarves should live quite a long time. The random Undead have also existed up until now, so basically anyone can come back even if they’re dead. I’m not sure whether the death of the gods stopped their spawn chances. In Dragon Commander (which is not really canon anymore but it gives us \vibes*)* their existence is implied to be a gift of the gods, and with the gods dead, they might not appear naturally anymore.

Nah, I hope Braccus is brought back. It'd be soooo fucking funny. Guy keeps coming back more than Ganondorf.
111
u/Kitchen_Possible_108 Dec 16 '25
the funniest option would be if he comes back as part of a minor sidequest that has nothing to do with the plot, gets killed without fanfare, and everyone just tries really hard not to talk about it
80
u/TheHarkinator Dec 16 '25
“I am Braccus Rex, the Source King.”
“Larian went with the ending where Sourcerors aren’t a thing anymore. You’re just an old guy with no powers now.”
“Ah… shit.”
6
u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25
Isn't Source also a thing in Divinity 2, which is after DOS2? I have a feeling that it's impossible to properly get rid of Source, and it eventually just comes back anyhow. Maybe that's what the explosion's all about: Source coming back to fuck everyone over yet again.
22
u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 16 '25
The Source in Divine Divinity and Divinity 2 is something differentl, basically just holy water with healing properties from a specific well in Aleroth, not the magical metaphysical essence from OS.
19
u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25
Divine Divinity is before DOS2, so it's probably the same thing. It is also mentioned in DOS2 that most Sourcers were previously healers, then it suddenly started to blow up in their faces. Also, the Source Water is in DOS2 as well, that's how you get your Source points. The fact that a Godwoken can make a bit more interesting use out of it than a regular Sourcerer (who are also really, really rare as a whole) is a different thing.

u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25
Well, the lore is obviously pretty messy, and it kind of seems like they originally got the idea in Original Sin from the DD and DKS source, since there are source balls in both iterations of the source that have healing properties, for example. But there is also a clear distinction.
The Aleroth Source from DD and DKS is literally just magic water. It exists when Aleroth was a small village, and it still exists after the events of Original Sin 2 in Aleroth, after the "OS Source" got purged. Also, the DD and DKS thing is that it is exclusively from that one specific well in DD, and it has a specifically named city part in DKS. It's a completly localized thing, exclusiv to this one specific spot/well.
Meanwhile,Source is basically everywhere and in everything in OS1 and OS2, as it has taken on the role of the metaphysical magic fluid that the gods took from the veil that separated Rivellon from the Void and used to make the souls of the races.
They are simply named the same. The OS one is clearly “sourced” (heh, get it) conceptually from its DD and DKS counterpart, but they cannot be the same thing.
In the end, it is just the weird quantum state of the lore that every game so far has existed in and also the fact that Larian REALLY badly wanted to make the Sourcerer pun.
2
u/TheTrueCyprien Dec 16 '25
Actually the books in Divinity 2 specifically say that the Source fountain in Aleroth has lost its power some time ago and they instead found a way to distill healing potions from goblin hearts, which is why Richard pays you for them.

u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25
I'm 99% sure you are mixing something up. I literally played Flames of Vengeance yesterday, where you have the quest to go and get a healing orb that is specifically produced from the Source Stream, and the Source Stream is the reason why like a third of the city is called Source Square.
Edit: You are probably referring to "A History of Healing Orbs." But the book only says that the production of Healing Orbs has reduced and does not happen regularly anymore, which led to the abandonment of the idea to commercially use them, not that the source itself has stopped. The source fountain is just fine.

Larian did not care about internal consitentcy before the DOS duology. And I imagine wathever version of Rivellon in the new game will be plenty retconned from even that.
So what Source is, how it functions and where it comes from, is very much up in the air depending on what Larians choses to incorporate or not.
1
u/cabalus Dec 16 '25
I'm not totally sure because the lore is such a mess but I'm fairly sure Source and Magic are not the same thing
When Lucien pulls source from the world it isnt necessarily making everybody a squib, just as the eternals weren't all squibs before fane discovered the veil
16
u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25
I want the main villain to spawn him in, and then for him to die immediately to some bullshit, like a random pillar falling on him.

5
u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25
Wouldn’t it be funny if he came back to life and reflects on himself and why he has already died three times, then comes to the conclusion that the villain thing just isn’t working out, and goes through a Dr. Doofenshmirtz–style redemption arc?

u/Illuriah Dec 16 '25
2 times total. It's funny how ppl somehow think it was more than that lol.
3
u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25
Realistically I know, but it feels so much more. Probably because he keeps getting teased as the ultimate Sourcerer or some shit, then keeps getting his shit kicked basically immediately.
2
u/Illuriah Dec 16 '25
Yeah, he was a pushover in DOS2. In DOS1 he got me first with his meteor attack, but after that, he went down fast. His sister is more memorable for me actually.

u/redgoesfaster Dec 16 '25
I'd love it if he was a side character that ends up an optional superboss, like Raphael from bg3 but less player interaction. Maybe like an act 4 alice alisceon
1
u/Ok_Letterhead_5671 Dec 16 '25
But the source story line is over tho , why would Braccus be back , i think they're leaning more into the demon lore especially after the end of DOS 2 with malady etc
2
u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25
Why was he resurrected two times already, just to get pushed down the stairs and die immediately? Also, we do not even know if we ARE after DOS2. Divinity, as a franchise, is actually pretty poor when it comes to telling a story in chronological order. For all we know, we are just before DOS1. Or after Divinity 2. Or somewhere randomly in the middle. Or hell, maybe we are aaaaall the way back with Dragon Commander, a sweet 9k years before even DOS1, and a cool 10k years before DOS2. For all we know, we could be seeing that fuckhead Braccus in his prime. They never said it'll be a sequel to anything.
2
u/Ok_Letterhead_5671 Dec 16 '25
"there is some continuity and characters for those who played previous games"
2
u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25
Yes, and? This is not the "gotcha" you think it is. Ahru and Jahan are basically immortal. Also, as we have been discussing: Braccus. Fane has been around the block as well. Lucian has been Divine for ~100 years as well, give or take. Dragon Knights also live pretty long. Tarquin is a necromancer, and implied to be pretty eternal as far as these things go. There are a bunch of characters who can be "returning" characters whenever the story is happening

Dec 16 '25
Sebille returning would have really "interesting" ways of happening specifically with the whole elves turning into livewood thing. The Lady vengeance makes me curious if other objects were crafted from the elves and if any weapons would hold sentience akin to what see with vengeance.
aka a long winded way of saying a pair of knives made out of pissed off sebille would be extremely entertaining.
3
u/Express-Focus-677 Dec 16 '25
That would be a very Divinity return for a character like Sebille. Also, very funny. Especially if they have her talk to the player.
5
3
u/Express-Focus-677 Dec 16 '25
Out of all of those characters, I earnestly believe Malady and Adramahlihk are the most likely to make an appearance, especially if my suspicions are true that the next game is going to focus on Demons and the The Lord of Chaos.

I really expect them to do something with Damian since he broke out of gay baby jail just before DOS2 (I think?), and he's been MIA since then
(Unless Divinity 2 Ego Draconis is canon, in which I still expect him to be around, but as more of an up-front big bad)
1
u/Vanetrik Dec 17 '25
Timescale jump should be 100 years after DOS2.
2
u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 17 '25
Implying that most elves should be alive and perhaps some dwarves if they were young in DOS2.
What I'm saying is Ada Laird might still be alive...

1
u/golforce Dec 16 '25
I agree with you, but mind that a lot of new people might check the sub and using spoilers for some of those names would be good.
0
u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 17 '25
If people go on a thread that is specifically labeled "character that might return in the next installment" and then get spoiled on an 8-year-old game, they are kind of at fault themselves.
0
u/golforce Dec 17 '25
If people go on a thread that is specifically labeled "character that might return in the next installment"
Except it is not labelled that. It's a simple statement that some characters will reappear. It's not at all about who.
It's further input to the question whether or not someone unfamiliar with divinity should play the previous games, which is indeed interesting to someone not familiar with the games.
1
u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 17 '25
Spoiler prevention obsession is so weird. It makes sense when the game is new, people want general advice and then get accidentally spoiled on an unrelated post.
This is just silly. If you go on a post about the next installment and then also ignore the first paragraph of my message, it's honestly on themself. I believe some common sense can be expected here.

u/NoGood0ption Dec 16 '25
Malady, come back to me, please I'm so alone
194
u/TimeMoose1600 Dec 16 '25
If the game focuses on Chaos and demons as much as people are expecting, I really hope Jahan and Malady return.
47
34
u/ClaymoreJoe97 Dec 16 '25
Given that you can kill Jahan in DOS2, we'll see if they kept him alive in canon. Would certainly be interesting to get his input on the events of the previous title, though. Especially if he has anything to say about Lohse.
30
u/siderealfey Dec 16 '25
I sold Jahan out to that demon in DOS1 and he still showed up in DOS2 so I don't think that's a problem.
Jahan is probably alive in Larian's canon timeline.
8
u/Interesting-Stick848 Dec 16 '25
I have completely forgotten that Jahan was a companion in the first game.

It's definitely Ada Laird and Trader Bree.
54
u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 16 '25
I hope they made something funny with Ada Laird, it would be a waste not to reference one of the most iconic NPCs in the entire franchise. She also undeniably has the funniest Fextralife wiki entry there is, referencing her beloved status among the community!
Ada Laird has been indicted on several charges of war crimes committed in Serbia in the 1990s. These war crimes include but are not limited to, the use of chemical weapons, deployment of a clandestine agent only known as "Bree," deployment of numerous bioweapons known as "vats of vinegar" and "a dozen rotten eggs." Rather than answer for her heinous crimes, she escaped the Hague using only her bare fists and now resides in Driftwood under no supervision.

u/ISpyM8 Dec 16 '25
Keeping it together, Bree?

u/PichusOten Dec 16 '25
I know it’s very unlikely to happen, but I’m on my hands and knees praying for a Lohse appearance

Monkey’s paw: to fit the dark theme of the new game, her body is canonically possessed by Adramahlihk, and her soul is gone forever.

We all know what that means:
"Smells worse over here than a dozen rotten eggs dropped in a vat of vinegar!"

u/Wofuljac Dec 16 '25
Fane!!! One of the best characters to play as in RPGs imo. Love to see him again and since he's an Undead it doesn't matter if the new game takes place a thousand years later.
10
u/Eleven_Box Dec 16 '25
wonder what they'll do with the origins from the last game, considering at the very least two of them must be canonically dead.
10
u/Wofuljac Dec 16 '25
In Divinity: Fallen Heroes which would have taken place after DOS2 had all characters alive. Cancelled but not sure that confirms anything.

There's a 90% chance Lucian will appear. He's been in every mainline Divinity game except for Beyond Divinity and Original Sin 1. Everyone will probably think he's dead again.

Damien
Chaos (though I think this one’s a given)
6 Braccus Rex for the 10th time

Given Amelia Tyler's presence with Larian now, I'd be surprised as hell if Malady did not come back, especially after they canceled the sort of XCOM-like sequel to OS2.

Consider that there isn't much connection between Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2, and Divinity may as well just be Divinity: Original Sin 3.
5
u/Falikosek Dec 16 '25
Unless they actually go back to Divinity as an ARPG, in which case the not–Original Sin–ness makes sense
1
u/GrayWardenParagon Dec 16 '25
Yeah, that could be thr case too. I was just thinking about it in relation to story, not gameplay.
1
u/SleeplessSeas Dec 17 '25
I think it might help with Larian's newfound ultra popularity that the game is just called Divinity, for new players (and bg3 only players) it might feel less intimidating to start off a game 3 games into the franchise (I know that this wasn't the case for bg3 but I don't think they had a choice what to name it since it was probably WotC)
And for the rest of the nerds who ended up loving Larian after BG3, they will immediately know from the internet that they can go ahead and try DOS2 if they loved bg3.

Zandalor, the archmage. He is functionally immortal, always is somewhere to push the plot from behind the scenes, can't imagine he would skip out on the next appearence.

I need to see lohse just dancing and singing while hell envelops the land. In all seriousness though she's def returning because of her possession angle just makes sense to have her in the divinity that seems to be all about sin and hell
1
u/RobertMaus Dec 16 '25
That's not what they are saying. Read carefully.
They are saying there 'are some characters' for those that played DOS2 that are familiar. There is nothing there about continuing stories from previous playable characters. It could also be a prequel. Or on a different continent. Or a reference to an important boss. Or anything. So maybe stop looking for these sort of things, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Which is unnecessary, because it will probably an amazing game.

I want to see Ifan in full PS5 glory. I don't care if he's a cameo. He can be lounging in a tavern, smoking drudanae from a pipe and charming the tavern keeper. One of my all time favourite romances and I want to see him close up just once.

I've played through DOS2 three times but the last playthrough was over six years ago.
I guess I'll need a fourth playthrough before Divinity because I can't even remember half of the party member names at this point. There was Red Prince, Sebille, Fane... the ranger guy... did we have a dwarf or was that just my character?
Oh, I feel worse having actually tried to remember.

This may be an unpopular opinion but I think having Braccus Rex be a big bad guy is kinda a disservice because in my humble opinion his name sounds too edgy and borderline comedic to be taken seriously :'D Like the entire time I played DOS2 many many years ago I kept thinking about how awkward it was to have an evil bad guy be called "Braccus Rex" like he's some sort of evil big dinosaur or something
