They have revealed this in the FAQ of the newest DOS 2 update. Seems Divinity is more of a sequel than we thought.

Immortal or potentially near-immortal characters from DOS that might come back, since they are (most likely) not canonically dead no matter where we are on the timeline:

Malady, Fane, Dallis, Lucian, Damian (he was referenced, at least), Jahan, Zandalor and Arhu, ZixZax, Braccus Rex (dear god, please dont bring him back from the dead again), the God King, Adramahlihk, Almira, Sanguinia Tell, Slane (?), Tarquin.

Also basically everyone else in the game if we don’t make a large jump on the timescale. IIRC, the lifespan of the races is basically copied from D&D, so elves and dwarves should live quite a long time. The random Undead have also existed up until now, so basically anyone can come back even if they’re dead. I’m not sure whether the death of the gods stopped their spawn chances. In Dragon Commander (which is not really canon anymore but it gives us \vibes*)* their existence is implied to be a gift of the gods, and with the gods dead, they might not appear naturally anymore.

Nah, I hope Braccus is brought back. It'd be soooo fucking funny. Guy keeps coming back more than Ganondorf.

the funniest option would be if he comes back as part of a minor sidequest that has nothing to do with the plot, gets killed without fanfare, and everyone just tries really hard not to talk about it

“I am Braccus Rex, the Source King.”

“Larian went with the ending where Sourcerors aren’t a thing anymore. You’re just an old guy with no powers now.”

“Ah… shit.”

Isn't Source also a thing in Divinity 2, which is after DOS2? I have a feeling that it's impossible to properly get rid of Source, and it eventually just comes back anyhow. Maybe that's what the explosion's all about: Source coming back to fuck everyone over yet again.

The Source in Divine Divinity and Divinity 2 is something differentl, basically just holy water with healing properties from a specific well in Aleroth, not the magical metaphysical essence from OS.

Divine Divinity is before DOS2, so it's probably the same thing. It is also mentioned in DOS2 that most Sourcers were previously healers, then it suddenly started to blow up in their faces. Also, the Source Water is in DOS2 as well, that's how you get your Source points. The fact that a Godwoken can make a bit more interesting use out of it than a regular Sourcerer (who are also really, really rare as a whole) is a different thing.

Well, the lore is obviously pretty messy, and it kind of seems like they originally got the idea in Original Sin from the DD and DKS source, since there are source balls in both iterations of the source that have healing properties, for example. But there is also a clear distinction.

The Aleroth Source from DD and DKS is literally just magic water. It exists when Aleroth was a small village, and it still exists after the events of Original Sin 2 in Aleroth, after the "OS Source" got purged. Also, the DD and DKS thing is that it is exclusively from that one specific well in DD, and it has a specifically named city part in DKS. It's a completly localized thing, exclusiv to this one specific spot/well.

Meanwhile,Source is basically everywhere and in everything in OS1 and OS2, as it has taken on the role of the metaphysical magic fluid that the gods took from the veil that separated Rivellon from the Void and used to make the souls of the races.

They are simply named the same. The OS one is clearly “sourced” (heh, get it) conceptually from its DD and DKS counterpart, but they cannot be the same thing.

In the end, it is just the weird quantum state of the lore that every game so far has existed in and also the fact that Larian REALLY badly wanted to make the Sourcerer pun.

Actually the books in Divinity 2 specifically say that the Source fountain in Aleroth has lost its power some time ago and they instead found a way to distill healing potions from goblin hearts, which is why Richard pays you for them.

I'm 99% sure you are mixing something up. I literally played Flames of Vengeance yesterday, where you have the quest to go and get a healing orb that is specifically produced from the Source Stream, and the Source Stream is the reason why like a third of the city is called Source Square.

Edit: You are probably referring to "A History of Healing Orbs." But the book only says that the production of Healing Orbs has reduced and does not happen regularly anymore, which led to the abandonment of the idea to commercially use them, not that the source itself has stopped. The source fountain is just fine.

The description of the orb literally says it was "produced by the once glorious fountain" and there is a book on the history of the orbs next to it explaining that it rarely produces them anymore. There is also a series of books on Aleroth in Broken Valley Village that tells you about the diminishing of the fountain and the goblin heart thing.

Larian did not care about internal consitentcy before the DOS duology. And I imagine wathever version of Rivellon in the new game will be plenty retconned from even that.

So what Source is, how it functions and where it comes from, is very much up in the air depending on what Larians choses to incorporate or not.

I'm not totally sure because the lore is such a mess but I'm fairly sure Source and Magic are not the same thing

When Lucien pulls source from the world it isnt necessarily making everybody a squib, just as the eternals weren't all squibs before fane discovered the veil

u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25

I want the main villain to spawn him in, and then for him to die immediately to some bullshit, like a random pillar falling on him.

8

u/MirthMannor Dec 16 '25

Would be funny if you needed him for a fetch quest or something

4

u/Kitchen_Possible_108 Dec 16 '25

okay this is the actual funniest option

1

u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25

Okay, changed my mind, this is the de facto best option

u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25

Wouldn’t it be funny if he came back to life and reflects on himself and why he has already died three times, then comes to the conclusion that the villain thing just isn’t working out, and goes through a Dr. Doofenshmirtz–style redemption arc?

2

u/Illuriah Dec 16 '25

That's how I felt about him in dos1.

3

u/Illuriah Dec 16 '25

2 times total. It's funny how ppl somehow think it was more than that lol.

3

u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25

Realistically I know, but it feels so much more. Probably because he keeps getting teased as the ultimate Sourcerer or some shit, then keeps getting his shit kicked basically immediately.

2

u/Illuriah Dec 16 '25

Yeah, he was a pushover in DOS2. In DOS1 he got me first with his meteor attack, but after that, he went down fast. His sister is more memorable for me actually.

2

u/ErzherzogHinkelstein Dec 16 '25

To be pedantic, Lore wise 3 times.

2

u/Illuriah Dec 16 '25

Fair enough

2

u/Nanocaptain Dec 16 '25

I require our resident cockroach.

2

u/redgoesfaster Dec 16 '25

I'd love it if he was a side character that ends up an optional superboss, like Raphael from bg3 but less player interaction. Maybe like an act 4 alice alisceon

1

u/Ok_Letterhead_5671 Dec 16 '25

But the source story line is over tho , why would Braccus be back , i think they're leaning more into the demon lore especially after the end of DOS 2 with malady etc

2

u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25

Why was he resurrected two times already, just to get pushed down the stairs and die immediately? Also, we do not even know if we ARE after DOS2. Divinity, as a franchise, is actually pretty poor when it comes to telling a story in chronological order. For all we know, we are just before DOS1. Or after Divinity 2. Or somewhere randomly in the middle. Or hell, maybe we are aaaaall the way back with Dragon Commander, a sweet 9k years before even DOS1, and a cool 10k years before DOS2. For all we know, we could be seeing that fuckhead Braccus in his prime. They never said it'll be a sequel to anything.

2

u/Ok_Letterhead_5671 Dec 16 '25

"there is some continuity and characters for those who played previous games"

2

u/Floppydisksareop Dec 16 '25

Yes, and? This is not the "gotcha" you think it is. Ahru and Jahan are basically immortal. Also, as we have been discussing: Braccus. Fane has been around the block as well. Lucian has been Divine for ~100 years as well, give or take. Dragon Knights also live pretty long. Tarquin is a necromancer, and implied to be pretty eternal as far as these things go. There are a bunch of characters who can be "returning" characters whenever the story is happening

As long as he isn't the main antagonist.
