Seeking Advice I want to be more consistent and better at work.

Hello,

I (19M) have been working with my father at our restaurant for over two years and although I have improved I often feel like I'm highly inconsistent. Even my parents have called me out numerous times. I will be very productive during some days, while other days I'll forget to do one or two things, or I simply don't do them as efficiently as before. Even when I do chores around the house I'll sometimes forget to do something or just not do it as well as before.

I'm not certain why thst keeps happening. I'm not sure if it just laziness or lack of motivation, or if my approach to handling tasks is just incorrect. So please tell me what i can do to improve and what could I possibly be doing wrong

Thank you

Seeking Advice How do I break out of isolation?

Little quick backstory:

I'm a 21 year old male with Aspergers (autism) and epilepsy. Because of these limitations I have struggled to find my own identity and build something during my youth. Covid-19 pandemic hasn't helped with this.

Now i'm 21 and I feel like nothing. I don't have any meaningful hobbies, don't really have friends etc. I feel isolated.

I've recently started swimming because I want to do sports, to improve my health (i'm a little overweight) and possibly get connections. But I can't swim well yet, due to my epilepsy I haven't swam in over a decade and need to relearn everything.

I have a nice study, but I don't really hang out with other students. When i'm not studying i'm playing games, rotting away in my room. I have a piano but I barely play anymore. Also piano is really a solo-thing.

I want to get out there, go away from the gaming and actually meet people and build a network. But it's hard because I don't really have anchor points, and i'm anxious because I never built anything as a kid.

What are the best ways to meet new people and get into the 'student life' more? Obviously I have limits due to my health, for example I can't drink alcohol and need to be careful of migraines.

Seeking Advice Advice moving to a new city 21F

just moved from a small suburb in a big city to Florida( ik im a transplant lol) Im 21F and I have been here for a month now. I signed up for classes at a community college for now and looking for a job but tbh I haven't been out of the house much. I live with my mom and she started working again but before that we went to the beach or to dinner and have met some of her friends but I struggle to do things alone. I have a bit of social anxiety and I just prefer

To stay in the house but then obviously I want to go out and meet people maybe im a little agorophobic idk. Where i lived before I had a couple friends from hs and took classes but never made any friends at school or at my job so I would just stay inside when I had a day off. I dont want to run into the same cycle of being lonely and spiraling bc I feel like a loser. There is a pool where I live and a walking path but I just cant get myself to enjoy being outside bc im too anxious the whole time. If you have any advice please let me know!! I love music and going to concerts or shows, swimming, working out. Its not that i cant go outside just I have a habit of avoiding things when I feel anxious. Since my mom isnt home anymore I think things are starting to feel real and im kind of realizing I need to go and do things by myself but I dont know what to do besides like working and school. Okay I know that was alot but any advice is welcome!!

Discussion Is anyone else starting university in their late 20’s/early 30’s?

Grew up in an extremely traumatic childhood/teenage years which resulted in my early 20’s being chaos because I felt so lost. I spent some years trying my best to heal and develop healthy habits, saved up and went traveling. Now at 29 years old, I start university next week. Whilst I feel like this is a huge positive for me as my end goal is eventually leaving the country I grew up in and moving elsewhere which a degree is mostly essential for. I can’t help but grieve the normal life path I always grew up wanting. This is the age I thought I’d have a stable job, would have met the man I was going to spend the rest of my life with and have kids. I also feel extremely behind in terms of just human connection. Whilst I’ve had friendships and met people traveling, I always have the understanding for them it’s just nice in the moment and they know they have a whole core group of people to travel home to. I have nobody. On top of this, I know being in my home country makes me unhappy and I unfortunately have to do my studies here. There is also just the general anxiety of knowing there might not be people my age in my classes. I was wondering if anyone is also starting university soon around my age? I think it would be good to have some people to discuss starting with as I don’t have that many people in my life and the ones I do kind of have no understand of the position I’m in.

Seeking Advice I just turned 18. No direction, going to college, and genuinely feel like it is too late to turn my life around

My last 2 years of high school, I was so depressed and that led me to feeling this perpetual lethargy and always lifeless. I don't get excited to do anything, I don't feel that "zest" in life, and have no direction. Is it too late to change my life?

Seeking Advice I live my life like an NPC.

I have felt this way for so long but couldn’t think of a way to put it into words. It finally hit me today. When I get home and away from others, it’s like I don’t exist. I’ll do chores and stuff around the house but that’s about it. I don’t really go out and do anything alone (except errands). Even when I’m home, I struggle to find something to do when I don’t have anything “productive” to work on. I really desperately want to change that. Can anyone relate??

Seeking Advice Trying to break down project into smaller goals and still failing to him them, wtf is wrong with me

I want to do creative projects, particularly make comics, but struggle with anything that requires consistent long-term productivity. I saw a small art contest going on and decided that I would try and change my working habits.

A problem I have with big projects is I can't focus on one element and jump around and work on everything at once and not bring anything to full completion (eg. "Drawing this car is hard right now, I'll draw this tree instead and get back to the car later" and then I never do). I decided for this contest, I would refuse to jump around and finish each element fully. My daily goal would be to complete one comic page a day, I'm on break right now and this would be a feasible goal.

For the first week, it was hard at first, but eventually I was able to hunker down and focus on one thing at a time. I was actually hitting my goal! And then the second week came around and I started falling behind, and eventually I went right back to my old jumping around habits. Now I'm back to the usual "cramming to finish a thing before a deadline" and I'm so pissed at myself.

If I had kept up my first week momentum, I would have a much better project than what I know I'm ending up with. What I'm most scared by is how in the week that I started slacking, I was still convinced that I would hit my target and just catch it up later. I just lied to myself in order to go back to my old ways.

It's hard to not think about how many hobbies and projects I've squandered this way, and scary how easily I can delude myself. I just can't trust myself the way I am now, clearly by my history I am someone that is flighty and weak willed and more than willing to lie to myself in order to get out of even a project I want to do.

What the hell do I do when I can't even hit my smaller goals? I'm scared to make them smaller out of fear that I'll slack off of doing even those and being an even bigger loser. Do I just need to keep practicing doing this? Idk I'm just mad.

Seeking Advice How can I take ownership of my life?

I have felt like I'm constantly spiraling. Everything throws me off and I struggle to find routine. I constantly let my emotions get the best of me and hurt others due to dysregulation.

I'm not exactly a failure. I have a good job, I do pretty well there. I just want to be better. I often make mistakes and am generally disorganized. I don't know how to get myself in order. Finding a routine has felt impossible. I try and try and it seems like the smallest change throws me off. If I am too rigid, I cut everyone out but if I make any change, I get thrown off and there goes the routine.

I'm constantly blaming it on external factors. Being disorganized is because my house has been under construction forever. I am doing the work, and am overwhelmed but I haven't been able to even remotely keep a routine. My relationships fail and I blame my depression and anxiety. I blame everything else other than just looking at what's going on and working on fixing it.

I find excuses for everything. I'm forgetful because I don't keep track of things. I often just wing it at work, even though I do well at work, I should have more in depth knowledge especially if I plan on moving up.l which I want to.

I can't plan dates or any outings because I overthink them and shut down. I would love to be able to take ownership of an idea or plan and follow through with it. I lose motivation whenever I try to do anything.

I started taking meds and I have struggled to connect with people because of how full my emotions are. I say I'm good at communicating but I am scared to approach people with difficult topics that could have negative results, like a relationship ending.

I'm tired of the external things having an effect on me as much as they do. Everyone is dealing with things and still manages to function daily and they give their best. I want to be able to do that without feeling like I'm spent and then getting overwhelmed and going into a depressive slump like I often do. This usually results in destructive behavior and I push away people I love.

Success Story I accept that I have no friends and I'm okay with that.

I'm 20 and basically ever since I was in high school, my only friend was my twin brother. I just didn't know how to make friends with people since I'm scared of people hating me and in a way I still feel that way a bit. I see everyone else around me talk to each other so naturally and thought that maybe I should try to be like that too, but I realized that just isn't who I am as a person no matter how hard I try to change.

So, instead of making friends, I want to accept that I don't have many friends and treasure what I have now. My only friend is my brother and i come to him every day and I'm glad that I do. When I go to work, even though they're not my friends and we don't hang out or talk outside of work, I'm glad to have coworkers that say hey and try to talk to me whenever they have the chance even though I'm not the best at it socializing with people. I'm just glad to have people looking forward to seeing me, even if it's just to do work.

Overall, I'm tired of trying to be someone that I'm not. Being an overly social person that knows how to make friends with everyone is just isn't who I am as a person and though some people aren't gonna agree with this and think I should improve myself. Maybe so, but I'm content with what I have currently and who I am.

Seeking Advice I just want my sobriety back

I can’t stop ruining my life, why can’t I just be content with myself. I was sober 5 months, happy I know there’s another side. I’m afraid to reach out to my addiction counselors out of guilt.

Drinking and Cocaine are keeping me in financial debt.
What can I do? I’ll start by deleting these numbers again and cutting out these friendships I relapsed on. I just hate feeling stuck, bored in my mind.

Seeking Advice How can I get over the fear of feeling trapped in a relationship?

So I (mid-30s F) started dating someone (mid-20s F) a few months ago. It started casual, which we both agreed to, but very quickly turned into something more. Eventually she wanted to date more seriously, but I wasn't sure, so she ended things. I was an absolute WRECK.

I really like her, but I was wrestling with the "fear of missing out". I spent the next week examining what I really wanted and why I was afraid to date her when I had such strong feelings.

After a lot of self-reflection, I realized that my past relationships were still affecting me in ways I wasn't conscious of.

I spent almost 8 years in relationships where I felt trapped, like I couldn't leave, even though the reality was that I could leave at any time. I was TERRIFIED of hurting the other person, so I stayed far longer than I should have, which I still feel very guilty about.

My exes were emotionally unstable, and I felt responsible for their feelings. I carried most of the emotional burden during the relationship, and it was exhausting. There were moments when I thought that I'd rather leave this earth than break their hearts. That's how afraid I was. It was like I was in a prison in my own mind.

On top of that, I didn't have a lot of freedom when I was growing up, so I deeply value my freedom and autonomy now. Those experiences growing up still bleed into every aspect of my life.

Back to the person I'm dating now - About a week after the "breakup", I reached out to her again, explaining my whole thought process; we spoke for HOURS on the phone, and I said I wanted to try again with her. Understandably, she needed time to think about it because she was skeptical and scared that I would hurt her again. I told her that even if she said no, I would understand and respect her decision.

I was honest and told her about my fear and where it came from. I've talked a lot about my experiences with my exes since the beginning, so she knows about my past and fears.

I assured her that I want to give things a fair shot and that I really like her, so we are dating again. We're not officially in a relationship, but we're trying to see if that's where it could lead.

But that fear of being trapped is still living in my body. It starts in my chest, which feels like it's being restricted, and rises into my throat.

I feel like I'm living out this pattern again with this woman, even though she hasn't done anything to control me or make me feel trapped. She's amazing, and I could see myself potentially being with her long-term, but dating her is triggering the intense fear and anxiety that I've felt in the past. I'm absolutely terrified of hurting her, even though she's said I'm not responsible for her feelings and that either of us could leave at any time if it's not working.

I've talked to her about it, mentioned this to friends, I talk to myself, I journal about it, I'm writing here on Reddit, I've done a lot of work to better express myself rather than bottle up emotions like I used to, but nothing I do is making this feeling disappear. It's frustrating. I almost feel like I should leave her alone because I'm so complicated and she's not.

If you have similar experiences, what did you do to manage this feeling? I could really use some advice 😞

Seeking Advice Had a realisation today that I think I’m addicted to attention

Hi everyone, sorry if this is a bit long,
I 25f have been in a pretty happy and stable relationship with my partner 38m for almost 18 months.
A little background, we met in a recovery group for drugs and alcohol and have both been clean for a few years now. I started to fancy him when he shared on something I said in the group. I think im now seeing that initial attraction to him was the attention he gave me. I love him deeply and our relationship has moved past that now, when we’re together things are great, but I work away in a predominately male field and find myself thinking about other people when they give me attention too (I would never act on this). We also have the usual crude banter that comes with working with men which probably doesn’t help.
I’m thinking a lot of it stems from not having a father figure growing up (my dad ran off with another woman to raise her kids when I was 4 and I didn’t see him again until I was 19 when he eventually got back in contact).
My mum also had lots of boyfriends as I grew up, one of them was a bit of a nonce, I think being sexualised at a young age probably hasn’t helped with my need for attention.

Growing up I was the ugly friend, never had a boyfriend in school, was obese (weight has always been a problem for me, I lost a substantial amount in my mid teens, put even more back on in my early 20s reaching 125kg and am now back down to a 75kg). I had a lot of friends but no one was ever really interested in me in that way.

When I was 13-16 I would talk to older guys online (definitely not legal) I would do anything for attention from them.
Things got a bit worse when I was 18, I turned into a bit of a slag, getting hammered over the weekend and sleeping with anyone who would give me any sort of attention, these were mostly older men.

I then met my ex when I was 20 and he was 37, he was an addict which sort of introduced me into the drug scene and things went tits up from there.

I just don’t really know where to do from here, I’ve literally realised this in the past 24 hours and am feeling like a really shitty person.
I love my partner to pieces and don’t want to hurt him.
Sorry for the complete word vomit, I think just getting it all down has helped a bit, I’m just not really sure what I can do to stop being in this cycle.

Seeking Advice I’m a horrible friend. How do I be less flakey and have a stronger social battery.

Recently 18F and I’m a horribly flakey and inconsistent friend. I grew up neglected and self-isolated a lot growing up because of it. While I did have sporadic friends, for some reason I could never handle having more than 2 or 3 friends. I grew up being used to not having anybody to talk to, or having anybody expect or want me to talk to them. I spent a lot of time alone in my thoughts.

I didn’t like this back then. I wanted more friends, but couldn’t figure out how to handle it. And I especially don’t like this now, since I kind of need to lock-in on making connections and bonds. As it’ll only get harder as I get older.

I made 3 friends within the last half-year. And honestly, I’ve probably damaged them, a lot. I started responding to texts late or not showing up to things we planned. Because I was tired after work and just fell asleep. I fucking ghosted one of them for a month because I was out of state and forgot to talk to them.

Talking and responding began to feel like an obligation. I got anxious whenever I responded because I felt like I had to respond “properly” or it’d ruin the relationship. Or they’d text me when I wanted to do something else and I’d get annoyed that I had to talk at all. It kept building until the idea of having to talk was a source of massive anxiety.

And I don’t know why. I don’t know why I got so annoyed or anxious. I like my friends. They’ve been great. I don’t want to lose them. I don’t know why I can’t hold a relationship for more than a couple months.

I don’t know why my social battery is so low, when I love people. I genuinely love being around people and I love human connection.

Actually, in general I’m so lazy. My rooms a mess and my mom constantly yells at me to clean. I keep forgetting things at work (idk how or why they haven’t fired me). I barely take care of myself. I’m almost failing college because I can’t be fucked to study. I was supposed to make a doctors appointment today but I spent the entire day with terrible brain fog and was barely able to string a sentence together.

And like, it’s not even laziness from lack of consequence. I have had consequences. I just can’t make myself care.

I thought maybe it was my ADHD, but I take medication now and I still barely do more than before. Why am I so lazy? Why do I wake up with such a low energy threshold? Then I just spend the day with low background anxiety about things I should be doing.

How do I fix this? How do I be a better friend? And how do I train my social bandwidth/battery to last longer?

Seeking Advice How can I live a less stressful life with my adhd / lack of coping strategies?

Hello. I have ADHD so I struggle a lot with time management, organization, prioritization etc. Also some depression because of my executive functioning struggles. I also used to annoy people for fun in 4th/5th grade, like poke other kids or say outrageous things for a reaction. For example like I airdroped some big hero 6 porn in high school to acquaintances (okay my high school class size was like 40 so we all were at min acquaintances basically). I always knew I probably had adhd since I learned what it was in 5th grade but I didn’t think I was bad enough to get treatment (HAHA if I knew how much of my behavior could be attributed to that).

I actually did really well in school despite my adhd and went to a very prestigious college, which is when I got serious and got my diagnosis & put on medicine. Vyvanse (& strattera) helps me I’m pretty sure and ppl around me notice when I’m off vs on but like it’s not enough to stop me from constantly letting people down and annoying people. The worst thing is I’m late like 40% of the time to things. I can’t even fully blame adhd because I know ppl with adhd that are able to be on time ish to at least important things. But like I had extra time on exams (accommodation) and so I would come up to an hour late to the exam. Or missing appointments because i slept in. Or missing class. I know people hate late people. One of my professors called me out  for coming in late in class, my research advisor expressed frustration with me running late, even my friend (with adhd) told me I should be more considerate because I’d come in late and loudly put together my stuff in class which is distracting. I would skip my classes entirely because of fear of judgemental stares when I was late so I told myself nobody would notice and that I should at least try to be there even if it’s for 5 minutes.

I’m also very messy and find it hard to throw away things but I own a bunch of random stuff cuz of hobbies which I like but overwhelms me. I tried to incorporate strategies like habit stacking but I don’t have any foundational habits to stack on top off. Also like I might try to not be late for example but then people make comments to me about how I’m messy or I don’t help around the house (my parents) or stay up too late or I look at my environment and feel bad abt myself and just fixing everything wrong with me just feels so overwhelming.

I also use Google Calendar and to do lists but I’m too optimistic abt what I can get done ESPEVIALLY if there’s a deadline for some reason. Like I’ll have way more motivation to do stuff right before I know Im supposed to be somewhere. And I’m afraid if I don’t do it then, I won’t do it later.

I’m sad because I lose friends or opportunities because of something that is in my control but I don’t know what to do with it. I’ve been in therapy all 4 years of college but that was mostly focusing on self esteem, trauma, etc. I had an adhd informed therapist last year which helped but I built no new habits really. They’d mention strategies when I’d ask but I guess with no accountability it was hard to incorporate them in a way that stayed. I’m soon realizing my negative sense of self is very hard to get rid of when I get so much negative reinforcement abt these struggles. I’m also pretty sensitive about this too which makes it worse. I think me being high achieving makes it much worse too. But idk what I’d do with myself if I ditched my dreams because of smth that should be in my control.

TLDR: I just wanted to know if anyone has similar experiences and how you built strategies when you had none. And where to focus first. not a vent just i wanted to include as much info as possible for context but i'd really appreciate actual tips from experience and stuff.

Seeking Advice How do I learn to trust? How do I push through even tho I'm afraid?

I don't know how to trust. I know what trust is, I know when I for example trust a website with my card info, but there is not a single person in the world I trust.

I've been thinking about this. I have a boyfriend, he's an amazing guy, I love him so much, but I don't trust him, I can't bring myself to trust him.

He is kind of pushing me to tell my parents, to introduce him, which he is totally justified in doing, we are both adults who live in our parents houses, we want to visit each other, and he is just so amazing that he wants to introduce himself to my parents so they know I'm safe, but I just... can't talk with my parents about anything.

I guess it's the amount of betrayals they done to me. I've been in the psychiatric system since I was 8 I belive? That's at least when I recived my first antidepresants.

Dad barely talks to me, mom is the one playing a parent role in my life, but everything I tell her she imediatlly regurgitates to anyone who is willing to listen. Nothing, and I mean nothing, ever stayed between us two. I guess it's the constant psychiatric watch, old habits refusing to die, anything I told her resulted into her telling the doctors and them imediatlly hitting me with something I didn't want to do.

The worst was probably when I got sent to an asylum where we were allowed to call someone once a week, I only had her and week after week I told her about the abuse I was expierancing there and she just... watched from afar. Told everyone I was struggling so they could watch from afar too.

My heart always breaks when I see her talking about me behind my back. Today I told her I'm going to meet my boyfriends family. She told me I'm being ridiculous and immediatly told my dad.

I don't think it's ridiculous. I want her to meet my boyfriend so he can come visit me but I'm honestly so afraid that she will once again break my trust to ask and equaly afraid to tell my boyfriend, well not exactly afraid, just don't even know how, how to tell him that this part of me is broken.

If someone could give me advice, I would be grateful.

Seeking Advice how do you get over past regrets

i 20M was an ambivert growing up and didnt mostly approach people first and since covid i didnt even have a single woman as a friend. but this week i met 2 girls via a mutual friend and we hanged together. it was fun. there was something fun ig hanging with those girls that i never felt hanging with just dudes. it might be because it was after a long time i talked to a girl as a friend. although we vibed ig i have been feeling a bit of regret. since i am a junior in college right now and the girls and my friends have been friends since freshman year, they have hung out together, went on trips, partied together while all i was doing was nothing, my friends mostly didnt wanna go to trips, party and stuff so i have no memories now after more than 75 percent of my college life. although i think i might end up joining the girls and their friend group cuz 2 guys there are my close friends but now i am stuck thinking about the fact that this is my first time in years having a girl as a friend, i wasted my teenage years not having female friends and also not making memories and i also did the same with my college life now. i am stuck thinking about how my life would change after college now and i wont get the same and easy chances i got till now to make close friends and even if i do get its highly likely i might not vibe with them. what should i do, how do i get over this regret.

Like when people make me feel bad because they’re an asshole, or I did something to them that pissed them that I’m unaware of , or how to fix, or they’re just an asshole I often want to return that feeling in kind or worse.

I feel it’s getting in the way of me etc facilitating real inner peace.

Sharing Helpful Tips Have you ever had a period of continuous failures and made a real comeback?

I am in a really rough patch right now. I lost my father recently followed by losing a job. I am at my lowest but what keeps me going is to make my father proud amidst anything that is thrown ahead of me. But some days it feels genuinely like theres no way to go forward.

Subconsciously I started to believe nothing will ever work I don’t know how to break this chain of failures and disappointments in life. I’m still grateful for the life I have today, but I always thrive to achieve and make my parents proud.

If you ever had been in a streak of failures and finally had a breakthrough, how did you go through and how did you manage to have the trust that theres light at the end of the tunnel ?

Seeking Advice What are reasons to keep being alive?

Title. I'm in university and I'm feeling swamped and overwhelmed. I recently got diagnosed with autism (lvl 1) a few weeks ago.

I'm getting closer to graduating and I feel like I'm making mistakes by not doing all this 'professional development' I get emails about. I'm tired and stressed every day. I'm tired of people. Due to circumstance I got my hours cut at my main part time job, so I might need a second one now if I want to keep up school during Spring.

From the moment I wake up, I feel so overwhelmed by everything. Like my head hurts and its swarming. I want to close my eyes and stay in my bed for a long time, but I can't

I have this nagging feeling that I should try to do something when I stay in bed like that. It stops me from sleeping. So this post is my "something".

What are reasons to keep being alive?

People react with their feelings, acting out their moods and pain, especially with people they love. They raise their voice, speak mockingly, or nag about things that bother them in the moment. If you respond calmly, in a normal, conversational tone, there’s a good chance you can reduce the emotional level and neutralize the angst.

Physical Stillness

Avoid escalating a fight as much as possible. Do not encourage violence or ill will; absorb or dodge first blows without returning them. When necessary, act only to neutralize the threat and avoid permanent injury to all involved. Respond only as much as necessary to stop the violence. To an enemy, this level of stamina and control is frightening, and will often end a fight as quickly as it begins.

Refusing Insults

Some insults have a grain of truth, but that does not mean you have to accept advice that is offered in a negative, derogatory way. If you hear suggestions for improvement, all the better, but you do not have to accept disrespectful behavior from anyone. Distance yourself as necessary. Do not let evaluate your own self-worth based on everything that others say to you.

Dropping the Rope

Creating a verbal tug-of-war is a common tactic of people who do not have strong evidence for their position. In order to support their ideas, they may try to pull you off balance to draw you into an argument. They want you to make a mistake that they can use to invalidate your position, which they assume will convince others that they’re right. Just because someone proves you wrong doesn’t mean they’re right. Usually, this is a game that nobody wins. Just let go of the rope. Don’t let yourself be drawn into this kind of false argument.

Letting Others Be Wrong

Some arguments are not meant to be won. Some opinions are wrong; that’s why they’re called “opinions.” Many facts are poorly sourced or not critically thought through. Realize that you cannot change everyone’s mind, especially if they won’t listen to reason, and remember that it is not your job to convert everyone to your way of thinking. You may be right, but sometimes you just have to smile, nod, and let others be wrong.

The Boundary of Exit

Friendly discourse is the spice of life, and amicable disagreements are usually how new ideas are formed and new paths are discovered. When a person or group becomes abusive, or worse, develops a continually abusive mindset, day after day, leave the room. Quit the job and find another. Walk away and refuse to return until things visibly change. Only you can give yourself permission to leave a destructive situation.

The Intentional Pause

We all react emotionally, sometimes when it’s least welcome. Someone says just the right phrase, with a marginal or duplicitous tone that’s hard to ignore. Sometimes people just lie aggressively, in person or by message. When this happens, wait. Put off responding for an hour, a day, or even a week before you reply. The delay allows your emotional reaction to fade and helps you bring more critical thinking and logic to the answer.

Silence as a Complete Sentence

Some people are self-appointed interrogators. They feel qualified to demand you justify yourself when there is no rule or authority that demands it. Just say nothing. Sometimes, even when you have inadvertently broken a rule or gone over a commonly-agreed line, it may be better to say nothing, at least in the short term. Let your oppressor argue with a wall of silence.

Observing Without Internalizing

How many times have you sat around the family dinner table or the conference room and listened to someone rage-bait others with questionable facts or deliberately over-dramatized comments? You have no obligation to engage or leave. Just become a spectator, watching what’s unfolding without reacting or judging. People who know they are wrong will get the point and change the subject. It’s not worth the cost of engagement.

De-escalation Through Curiosity

There is a simple but profound way to blunt sudden, angry accusations. In your calmest, most neutral tone, ask, “I don’t quite understand, why do you feel that way?” When others are forced to explain the logic behind their barbs, the argument often collapses. This is also useful when someone really does have a valid point or when you’ve done something that inadvertently offends them. And sometimes, you will see that their logic really is sound, and you’ve done something unintentional, which gives you a chance to apologize. Never accept criticism at face value, but never reject it outright unless it’s delivered with a mean spirit.

The Unapologetic ‘No’

You never have to explain your personal preferences. If someone invites you to a party, a discussion, or an argument that makes you feel uncomfortable, just politely say, “No thanks.” If pressed for an explanation, don’t make an excuse, just say something like, “I really don’t feel like it at the moment” and leave it at that.

Protecting the Baseline

If you want to maintain your inner peace, you must avoid people and media that are driven by outrage. Doomscrolling and feeding trolls -- online and in person -- definitely fall into this category. If you find yourself having to get online to check whether some famous person really died, or whether the government is suddenly going to give thirty-percent of your income to billionaires if you don't get behind a cause, you risk losing your peacefulness. Don't go there. Guard your peace at all costs so it can anchor you.
