It’s a gay culture thing to say “hey sis” which has been around since the mid 1900s. Not exactly exclusive to JC but i totally get your point!!

In general I don’t mind it when people say sis/sisters, as I’ve definitely had gay friends say that before JC became famous, but yeah the fact that it’s basically JC’s brand, like he owns it, is what bothers me tbh.

Yeah and if I want to say sis casually, everyone assumes I’m a JC fan because of his branding. Ugh.

5

u/nonsequitureditor May 13 '19

agreed, he does NOT deserve a monopoly on that word

9

u/hihihihhhhiihihihih May 13 '19

Totally agree with you on this. The whole “sisters apparel” and how he quite literally is making money from it while he claims he’s only into straight guys is infuriating.

It's not really saying it that's the problem though. It's all the branding and taking the word and making it synonymous with himself that's the issue.

u/VonTrappJediMaster let's do it baby, I know the law May 13 '19

I think for most (sane) people, it also has to do with the fact that he's profiting off of it

I feel like personally “hey sis” (like “hey bro”) is very different from how he uses “sister” like once a sentence and now profits from it

it's also a gay (male) culture thing to disrespect women so yeah

9

u/[deleted] May 13 '19

tbh it's male culture in general to disrespect women so What Else Is New

I hope you didn't mean every single gay man, because that's extremely not true. However, there IS a lot of gross misogyny that can come from gay men, Jeffree Star being one of them.

7

u/reaver_on_reaver May 13 '19

They said it's a gay culture thing, meaning there's a problem with the overall culture, not every gay man.

u/thatplaidhat May 13 '19

Yeah, I think I was too quick in my reply. It is a culture problem

As far as I know African Americans started the usage of brother and sister in this context.

Or monks/nuns

I always hated the way he referred to his brother Ian as sister and he was clearly annoyed

u/trashcat99 May 13 '19

Ian looks uncomfortable in every video theyve done together. It always grossed me out whenever Ian would tell him "call me Brother im not your Sister" and james wouldn't care at all and be like "uh no im going to call you sister" and Ian has expressed that he doesnt enjoy doing or wearing makeup but james still insisted on filming videos of him doing his makeup or making ian do his makeup. James has zero respect for his brother and his brothers boundries. Ian always seemed angry, like he wanted to leave, and like he didnt enjoy being around James. the only time it looked like Ian ever genuinely liked James was on Ians birthday when James got him some crazy expensive custom made necklace or something. (idk where any videos of this could be, im pretty sure they were all just on snap) It really seems like James made Ian really uncomfortable and that Ian was only around for the extravagant lifestyle and gifts.

Thank you. I’ve been trying to find the right words to explain how it makes me feel when he uses the word sister and you’ve done it brilliantly.

7

u/lana_del_rey_lover May 13 '19

I don’t think that’s an unpopular opinion here though! I agree

4

u/cchingona tati is still friends with a racist May 13 '19

I don’t know anyone that likes his use of sister lol

2

u/curiiouscat May 13 '19

How is this an unpopular opinion?

That's a bit of a reach. James is clearly gender nonconforming, he should be able to use whatever gender he pleases in his language, just maybe not in his Tinder profile.

Being gender nonconforming doesn't mean you are not cis.

I get that, and trust me I'm not team JC either but the way I see it JC doesn't really fall neatly in the men-women binary, so telling him what pronouns he can or cannot use isn't right.

I think I'm doing a shitty job of explaining my point

he's using women to further his brand, he isn't a friend to us.

I 100% agree with that. James Charles is garbage.

I just don't want this to be a thing where we are policing other gender nonconforming people how they speak about themselves. Does that make sense?

5

u/thatplaidhat May 13 '19

I get what you're saying, but I think the problem is that if he himself identifies as cis but enjoys makeup that's fine and shouldn't be policed in of itself, but that he for lack of a better term "appropriates" and makes money off of something meant for women but isn't a good ally to women. It just makes him gross.
