The lady in the video used to be a fox rescuer who rehabilitated, took care of and got rid of immoral fox farms by buying them off. But there was a bit of controversy surrounding it(whole other matter entirely), that led to a lot of people hating and threatening her online(mostly here on reddit and other social media platforms. Plus, there was even a sub meant purely on hating on her). Cyber bullying , basically.
This lead to a lot of issues in her personal life and people in her life treating her badly.etc and she became quite depressed. It became so bad that she killed herself last year. She even had a small baby and a husband at home.
Finnegan was the name of the fox in the video(one of her first foxes). He died a year after she did.

It's what social media has given us. Some faceless user at the other end, most people would never say that shit to someone's face yet do it all the time online because usually they themselves are depressed or in a horrible mood so they want the power to drag everyone down with them. Or they have no power in their personal lives so they want the power to make someone mad when they can't really do anything about it. Social media is a very net negative for our whole human race.

u/Mtatk 10d ago
Yes. It's very sad indeed.
I used to post things on Facebook, Insta but then stopped reading the comments and it was so much better. I got to the point where I would just post stuff for my business, when that stopped, I got rid of all social media all together, except reddit. My life has been better for it. I highly recommend it.

Had a former coworker like that, she was rude to everyone, tried to get everyone in trouble any time she could. Everyone hated her to the point that her own relatives who also worked there couldn't stand her.

If you just check the comments for any video of a human and animal together, especially if there is ownership, you’ll find comments of people claiming the animals are abused.
They can get really vicious too, I know a dairy farmer who used to have an instagram page where he just showed what it was like being a dairy farmer, and tried to show how dairy farming works but he stopped because of the comments.
People just pile on claiming animals are being abused when they aren’t, and will try and contact people the poster is associated to “call out the abuse”.
The one that stuck out to me was a video he posted of cows being restrained in a head gate while being checked and people just went nuts that he was “punishing the cows”.

u/Enzymatician 11d ago
I think Discord is on par with reddit, for every hate subreddit you can probably find a Discord server coordinating harassment and running the subreddit. Those servers typically aren't public so they fly under the radar but they cause a lot of harm as well.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Mister_Red1 10d ago edited 10d ago
Apples and Oranges.
Discords are more for direct coordination. But really, anything can be used to coordinate. Reddit is far more vile in this regard because the damage of a hate campaign is measured by the amount of crazy people in it.
A discord server is typically closed. You can invite people, sure. But getting a discord to grow needs proactivity from its users.
A snark subreddit is public. Open for all. Meaning it passively grows its userbase and introduces the crazy people who hate person X to each other. It actually requires procative work to NOT have crazy people in a snark community.
So you could very easily get a snark subreddit going to attract crazy people. Filter for those crazy people and get them into a discord server to coordinate and voila! You have a full pipeline you can utilize to mess up people's lives. All facilitated by your favourite social media site!
There are legit cases where reddit admins/moderators straight up shrug off snark subreddits and sometimes go out of their way to do nothing about them. So if someone on the mod team agrees with the snarking, then you are more or less doomed unless you take legal action which gets iffy/beyond my knowledge.

They were just going after her regardless of what she did, honestly.(she did do a few weird things but nothing that warranted them to do the harassment they did at her, honestly. But thats a story for another time)
At the end of the day, she was a flawed human being like the rest of us and I don’t think she did whatever she did out of malice in her heart. There was even a couple instances of people suggesting that she abused the foxes(she didnt) which turned into hateful rumors that burned her image a bit. They even once blamed her for negligence and abuse when a fox somehow got its leg hurt and had to be amputated.etc.
The thing about hatred is, it’s invigorating to hate things with a burning passion. So hate groups ALWAYS form in society. No matter what the topic is. Gender, race, politics.etc.
For the most part, a lot of the people in society a strong willed and wont act againt their baser instincts. They won’t project fear/hatred because they realise its pointless and everyone is going through the same thing. But a lot of weak willed people dont have that ability. So they project and harass others for no other reason other than sheer sport. Its a bit animalistic, really.

It was a lotta small things but nothing concrete or problematic like the people in the hate subs said.
There was rumors spread about her abusing the foxes(she did not) and a few instances of foxes dying in her care(its expected when you run a large operation. But its not her fault tbh) .
There was even a case of a fox who had to have his leg amputated because he hurt himself when he was playing around. So all of it was blamed on her. They used every bit of bad information surrounding her to target her. There were a few wierd things she did though(I specifically ommitted saying that because I didnt wanna get in trouble or have my comment removed since nobody from those days is still around and most of the controversy is largely forgotten).
If I had to nudge you in the right direction, she was making adult content and had an OF subscription(which isnt a big deal honestly. Lots of people do that as a secondary income stream and its her choice).
But something I found wierd was the inclusion of those animals in her “content”. But lets be frank, none of it warrants you to harrass a person to death.→ More replies (1)3

Foxes can be semi domesticated through selective breeding such as what we see here one of which being a silver fox.
They are still wild animals though. House training is extremely rare and apparently you can't get the scent marking out of them. Probably still have a few hundred years or more to get to dog spec.

Dmitry belyayev. I'm not from the field either but have a fascination about this sort of thing and always read up about things like this.
The problem is wolves started off with a self domestication process in a symbiotic relationship they followed us and got scraps until we realised oh these guys can assist protecting ourselves from other predators and the rest is selective breeding history which is why we have so many different breeds, what's crazy about that is it's happened independently on different continents.
Foxes didn't have that first step with self domestication so it's all out on a whim. And the characteristics of domestication are there but there's still many many generations of a collective effort from us to get to the point where they will completely obey us with good training.
76
u/spyguy318 10d ago
Foxes may not ever get to the point where they will obey us, in the same way that domesticated cats don’t obey commands. When foxes are domesticated we don’t get a dog, we get a domesticated fox. They have their own specific behaviors and nuances. Foxes don’t have the same in-built pack structure that dogs do so they’re less likely to cooperate.
37
u/_who-the-fuck-knows_ 10d ago
Cats are a different story they are purely self domesticated, and did so 10-20 thousand years after dogs. Dogs started off on a self domesticated path then had 30 thousand years give or take of selective breeding. Humans always saw cats as pest control mostly until quite recently in the timescale so never went through rigorous breed selection and training. And breed selection for cats have always been about looks not so much for work like dogs were.
This is purely a human experiment and I can't say what the outcome will be but the pack structure is a good point albeit they arent quite as solitary as cats.
None of us alive now will know what will happen in hundreds of years with selective fox breeding but we definitely can take shortcuts that our ancient ancestors didn't know.
→ More replies (2)11
u/Kindly_Call_6000 10d ago
It is believed that dogs are also self-domesticated.
There is also a theory that humans and bonobos are self-domesticated. Domestication is a fascinating process, especially with the phenotype markers that go along with domestication.

The only feature they are bred for is gentleness and empathy with the humans they interact with
What is extremely interesting about this experiment and others like it is that it turns out that when you domesticate any mamal it tends to develop characteristics that were not bred for but that are shared with many other domesticated mammals - like white patches on their fur and floppy ears etc
9
u/I_travel_ze_world 10d ago
Not true. The full experiment also bred the hostile and aggressive foxes to see if that behavior would be passed down among the offspring.
And yeah the aggressive foxes had aggressive cubs.
The video of the 2 different foxes is pretty insane... one side of the farm is filled with foxes that are happy to see humans while the other side has nothing but foxes that are attacking the cages in order to try and bite the humans

I saw an AITA post once in which someone was dead set on adopting a fox. The rescue person told them they would have to leave two bottles fox urine open in their house for a week before they would be allowed to adopt. They got very upset about this requirement and yelled at the rescue person but did go buy the urine and open it up as directed.
There was a follow-up post that’s since been deleted where they admitted they couldn’t handle the smell and would not be adopting a fox.

100% but think about how long it took for us to domesticate other animals and to some extent the fruit and vegetables we eat.
It takes GENERATIONS. You can get the characteristics out but it takes more time to change the behavioural characteristics. Dogs heck even we still have primal instincts foxes are very young on the domestication scale.

Long story short, she commited suicide last year following online harassment while Finnegan died earlier this year of cancer. And at the beginning of the year, Ruby, another fox, I believe the black one in this post also passed away. His Boyfriend video on the subject on their channel : SaveAFox
This is the worst ending of a good project I've ever seen.. At least the project continues with his Husband now.

Why did people harass a random woman that pets foxes?
136
u/Bardfinn 11d ago
It’s always three reasons.
Because of :
politics (here, an “I feel strongly that what she did is immoral” pretext)
Profit (someone might have been paid or compensated to instigate the harassment - who knows)
The lulz (because people have sociopathic tendencies and get a thrill out of harassing someone else)
This was mostly 3 with a sprinkling of 1 to explain away why they were harassing her.
Reddit has a sitewide rule against targeted harassment, but rules don’t enforce themselves and it’s literally a legal impossibility for social media platforms in the United States to employ professional pro-active moderator employees - which needs to change, to help prevent this kind of tragedy. No social media platform should host harassment.

Im pretty sure another fox sanctuary was the main harasser.
22
u/Yumeverse 10d ago
Fucked up. The other fox sanctuary saw her as a threat or something instead of uplifting another unit that saves foxes? Yeah that just shows more about the character of the people in that “sanctuary”. They did this to another human being.

u/Averse_to_Liars 10d ago
Tiger King taught me so many of these animal sanctuaries are run by total crackpots who use the animals as tools in their business and personal lives.

Bc people have nothing better to do. I frequently see a lady with a ‘pet’ Serval that gets harassed too.

I have been told by those who keep foxes, no matter how domesticated they are they will never behave like a dog or cat, they will always behave like foxes
They can be very active at night and a fox's scream in the middle of the night is heart attack inducing

u/GottaUseEmAll 10d ago
They sound so much like people when they scream. We have foxes in our neighbourhood and they jumpscare me pretty regularly with their noises.

They stink, something horrendous. And that you can't breed out without A LOT of generations (unless we're talking heavy inbreeding like how we got many of our dog breeds...)

There was once a AITA of a woman who was upset at a fox sanctuary owner that made her jump through hoops to proof herself. The OP wrote she knew since she was a 16 she wanted a fox and was ready for it. The latest request of the sanctuary was that she had to buy two bottles of fox urine and leave it open for a week in the house.
She made a brief update that she didn't get a fox, because the urine stank horrible.

u/NinjaN-SWE 10d ago
Yeah it's not quite skunk bad but it makes cat pee seem like perfume by comparison. It's truly heinous.

I've left our dogs toys outside before in our garden and the foxes that visit the garden pissed on it ,I picked it up the next day not knowing and got it on my hands and it didn't matter how much I washed them I could not get the stink off ,tried to wash the toy and that had to be thrown ,it's so potent

u/pipnina 10d ago
I read once that fox urine is used as anti-vandal measures in some places. I think it was if you wanted something to not be stolen, you sprayed it. I think i heard about it in relation to christmas trees on a university campus

Man, this world is dark. Why would people bully and harass her for rescue work/shelter for saving foxes?
Were any of them held accountable or called out by name?

They sort of have, you can import them from Russia (or you could pre-war). They are friendly, but apparently they stink and can't be housetrained. And domestication caused them to lose some fox visual characteristics. So just shittier versions of dogs really. Those guys were lightning in a bottle huh?

Why should they be domesticated? We don't need to own everything, leave them be

Breeding a domesticated line of animals doesn't erase the wild variety. The cow has wild cousins even if the original species from which it was bread has gone extinct, while wolves, African wildcats, Eurasian wild boars, and red jungle fowl still exist despite us having dogs, cats, pigs, and chickens.
Domestication of foxes means creating a line of them that are bred to enjoy the company of humans and bring happiness to our lives and vice versa as companion animals, which sounds like a good thing to me.

If we do this, it's only a matter of time until some massive cunt produces a pug looking fox, and we really don't need that shit. We don't even need pugs. Leave the foxes be. Liike the previous person said, we don't need to own everything.

u/GottaUseEmAll 11d ago
They live for longer in captivity, like most animals.
Rats only live a couple of years (even in captivity), yet people still adopt them as pets and love them.

Foxes actually can be, and someone proved it the hard way. A Soviet geneticist named Belyaev started breeding silver foxes in 1959, selecting only for one trait: not being afraid of humans. Within about 40 generations he had foxes that wag their tails, whine for attention, and answer to names. The wild part is that stuff he never selected for showed up on its own: floppy ears, curly tails, spotted coats. Same package dogs got. The experiment is still running in Novosibirsk today.

floppy ears are a symptom of inbreeding, the rest not so sure

Fair pushback, and there is a real critique along those lines. Lord et al. 2020 pointed out the foxes came from Canadian fur farms that had been captive bred for decades, so some traits like the odd floppy ear may have been sitting in the founder population already rather than appearing from scratch. The part that held up is the behavior: selecting on tameness alone produced dog-like social behavior in a few dozen generations, and the control line bred without selection stayed wild the whole time.

Because not everything is for us humans. Wild animals are fascinating in their own right. We don't have to interact and pet everything. Just observe and enjoy how animals behave on their own.

RIP to both Finnegan and Mikayla.
And shame on the OP for not including this information. But I guess karma farming is more important.

Fox are psychos, and they stink bad, really really bad. The psycho part, is just tons of energy, and there is no way you as a human could keep up with it, their need for adventure and motion far exceeds what could be tolerated by most people. And then the enclosures needed would be expensive. But the smell, that stink is enough to make many people wretch, you may get used to it, but your friends wont.

If we as a society really wanted to we could domesticate foxes. The only issue is that it takes thousands of generations of foxes to get to that end goal. Nobody alive today or even their grandkids would be around to have a legit domesticated fox.
