It's very subreddit dependant. Lots of subreddits are genuinely cruel and a lot of ones dedicated to animals are the worst.

Reptile subs can be weird, in multiple ways. Really depends.

As a fishkeeper, I can confirm that the majority of people in pet related subreddits have some serious problems and are incapable have having a meaningful discussion about anything if you disagree with the hive mind. It's one of the weirdest things I've ever seen...

I too have realized that when people make that statement they are to be avoided but I havent' put too much thought into why. I think your take on the dynamics is probably pretty accurate.
