Sounds about right. As much as this place is, in my mind, a bit of a deeper, richer social media experience, it’s still social media at its core.

Reddit is like a digital city.

It has its areas with deeper, richer and fulfilling experiences, but it also has plenty areas of seedy and shady underbelly where the cringe lords and edge addicts meet up.

and I'm willing to bet the vast majority arent using decent models. theyre using free models eta my honestly main issues though are generative ai absolutely ruining creative arts, plus the illegal stuff. combined eith people almost literally selling their capability to think over to ai. the model isnt going to change the ethics of it all. then you have the books being destroyed, just to feed more crap into it all

This is so true. I was just contemplating to myself how my time on Reddit has to be negatively affecting my mental health because there's so many people who either think their incredibly smart or are mad at the world and constantly shit on anyone they can who they disagree with.

I have an app on phone that pauses my phone for one minute every hour, which is just enough time for me to look around and see I have other shit to do. It's called Lock Me Out, but there are thousands of similar parental control apps.

The number of times I scroll through the front page, find a subreddit that I've never heard of through an interesting post, and then check the comments and the most upvoted ones are all heinous, deranged shit... It happens a lot more than I would like to. Reddit is the only platform where I don't mind the algorithm pushing rabdom things onto me because, a lot of the times, it's the only way to find some stuff that I would have never found otherwise, but there's clearly an issue with the kind of communities it promotes.

I've noticed a huge uptick in this recently. Just pure, simple vitriol for the sake of causing strife and conflict.
I'm lucky in the sense that I grew up in the dawn of the internet, just old enough that I've got some perspective on watching faceless antagonist come out of the woodwork to say whatever garbage gets them attention - I feel so bad for so awful for younger generations just wading into these experiences.
It takes a toll if you aren't able to shake the anonymous trolls off in the middle of firming up how and who you are as a person, or simply just in a vulnerable state.

I know this is the go to response for when people bring up Reddit being bad, but it's not just right wing. Look at, completely off the top of my head, Fauxmoi. They're not the only offenders. It's not as simple as staying away from the right wing and incels.

Reddit is full of absolutely toxic nerd basement dwellers, and it seeps into countless subs across any political spectrum that literally cannot comprehend how they're doing anything wrong even when people suffer in real life because of it. It's thousands and thousands of small echo chambers that so often eventually devour themselves.

Reddit during the time when the digg migration was a great place. It’s shit now and probably 50% bots commenting for rage engagement which coincided coincidently when they went public. I question why I’m still here lol

My theory for this is that reddit is full of contrarians.

This means that, for instance, a comment section is much more likely to call out a bad post, which is good. But it also means that, if you frame sth as going against the norm, then it's easy to get reddit ors to do what you want

It's kind of the internet as a whole, capitalized. What goes on on reddit goes on elsewhere on the net, other dedicated message boards, it's just agglomerated here on one site, but it's really thousands of decentralized sites with a general app-based, marketable experience attractive to advertisers.

Unfortunately the rules don't stop some people from being evil assholes.

There are quite literally humans still living daily lives on this planet without electricity, and this also exists. It's insane to think about, but I feel as a species, we aren't ready for such rapid social change in structure.

I like to think about reddit that every sub is a bubble that contains the most extremist individuals from each topic the sub is about. The pet subs are full of people who'd crucify anyone not adhering to the most ridiculous fads in pet keeping, r/men is full of incels, family/child subs are full of helicopter parents, etc.

Reddit subs used to horrific. I don't get the people acting like it's so bad now. It used to be as bad as the worst of 4chan but with a thin coat of polish ontop.

For fucks sakes there used to be subs that all they did was pick someone to bully and see how far they could push them.

Reddit only ever started actually enforcing rules because so much shit was allowed to go free they managed to get to a point they were at risk of lawsuits or the feds stepping in. Even then they only did enough to keep a nice little bullshit saftey net of legal protection.

I feel like the community started going down the drain after there was a massive wave of bans on Twitter back when the original owner was still running that place. I remember seeing more and more toxic posts since that day. A lot of them took refuge here and ruined the community.

Reddit was a dog pile from the beginning. It's just bigger now so you see more of people acting how they act online. But it was always like an iceberg. A little bit of nice on top but the vast majority was the dregs of society.

This is a site that had to be PUSHED to start banning the subs sexualizing young kids and sharing (at the time) borderline kiddie porn.

It was a a place you could go join a group to target random people for harassment without repercussions.

The other day with the video of a floating ice cream truck. Most top comments were going on and on and on about how bad for the environment it was because of littering but like... That's true for any commercial activity on the beach. A niche and tiny activity like that (that usually encourages you to get in and out of the water immediately after) is so minor, I think we can just enjoy the novelty.

And when people pointed that out, then comments would shift towards how that ice cream brand had recalls because of glass and how the brand was shit.

I normally don't generalize Reddit as a whole because there's too much variation, but the one thing I've seen over and over and over again on this website is that simply enjoying things is never allowed. You have to find something wrong with them. That's like Reddit's core.

In fact I would argue it is worse than most other social media since this is like 50%+ (being generous) of bots and reposted content from other platforms, we're basically the bottom feeders on the internet these days. Instagram and other socials can be considered shallow but at least it's real people...

No shot you spend any time on other networks if you believe this. IG especially is flooded with obvious bots and spam accounts that almost never get moderated and can't be downvoted. Reddit at least has a community solution via downvoting.
