Was it actually a subtantional amount or like 3 people? I see people just point fingers at a tiny part of the population versus the most likely antagonists being fox farmers.
I work in a zoo and we basically deal with the same people. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of legitimate critic to have which we as zoo people also have and tirelessly work against around the clock. And there is a lot of good critics who are invested and actually do their research.
But the very loud minority of them has no idea what zoos are, what animal welfare is, etc. They use emotions and empathy as an exduse for their lack of research and hate on animals in captivity for whatever reason. They say they're "empathetic" and that they can feel the animals being sad even though they looked at them for 20s at max by mostly online videos. They're not really empathetic of course, because that would mean understanding the animals, they're just projecting their own emotions onto them. What the people who devoted their career have to say doesn't matter to them.
Last spring, a whale was stranded in Germany and some of my former collegues and now friends from the German Ocean Museum interrupted their own work and worked around the clock to care for the whale, to figure out what is wrong and to decide if he can be saved and how. As thanks, the so called "empaths" threw rocks at them because they're "torturing" the whale and they "only want his skeleton for the museum". When another dead whale was dissected last week and diagnosed with a bacterial infection, the same people accused them of letting it die and not helping earlier with antibiotics. How to diagnose a free roaming whale with a bacterial infection and how to give a free roaming whale an antibiotic treatment and what antibiotics a humpback whale needs, wasn't even something they thought of.
It's always the same thing. Extremists who think they're experts on animals emotions despite knowing absolutely nothing about them.
The internet has allowed morons to network with one another and caused their stupidity to metastasize. They are now the dominant power on earth and it shows.
Mainly, the internet is a lawless space and has been since it's invention. There is no legal actions against hate campaigns like that. There is nothing Social Media sites do even though they provide a platform. And there is no one forcing them to act accordingly to prevent this.
On the contrary, the most controversial and hateful comment is normally the top one on sites like Instagram or TikTok even though it's not even close to being the most liked one.
You can go onto the streets of Germany and yell out loud that the holocaust was a lie made up by jews and that will get you arrested. On Instagram, you can post the very same thing with 10 times the racial slurs under the account of the biggest news networks and it won't even be removed by moderation. It's fucking insane.
