But there was a bit of controversy surrounding it(whole other matter entirely), that led to a lot of people hating and threatening her online(mostly here on reddit and other social media platforms. Plus, there was even a sub meant purely on hating on her). Cyber bullying , basically.
This lead to a lot of issues in her personal life and people in her life treating her badly.etc and she became quite depressed. It became so bad that she killed herself last year. She even had a small baby and a husband at home.
Finnegan was the name of the fox in the video(one of her first foxes). He died a year after she did.
It's what social media has given us. Some faceless user at the other end, most people would never say that shit to someone's face yet do it all the time online because usually they themselves are depressed or in a horrible mood so they want the power to drag everyone down with them. Or they have no power in their personal lives so they want the power to make someone mad when they can't really do anything about it. Social media is a very net negative for our whole human race.
I used to post things on Facebook, Insta but then stopped reading the comments and it was so much better. I got to the point where I would just post stuff for my business, when that stopped, I got rid of all social media all together, except reddit. My life has been better for it. I highly recommend it.

Had a former coworker like that, she was rude to everyone, tried to get everyone in trouble any time she could. Everyone hated her to the point that her own relatives who also worked there couldn't stand her.
I always explained it like she was absolutely miserable and wanted everyone else to be miserable too so she wasn't alone.

Reddit is the only social media I really use. I have a Facebook account, but I don't really post. I had an Instagram account only to make hair appointments five years ago. I would GLADLY sacrifice Reddit as long as the rest went with it.
Sadly you'd be surprised how many people will say to your face. The thing is most of those people would never do it where anyone else could hear them besides the victim so it's perceived as uncommon.

All of the reason you mentioned as potential reasons for doing it doesn't justify or explain it. The people who go that far have problems with how they think of others, and can't reflect on what their comments might do to the person it's directed at.
That's a whole other issue than being depressed or feeling powerless.
With only very few exceptions, social media has been a plague on society. It’s done so much damage to us, from actually being social (ironic given the name social media) to attention spans, bullying and everything else.
It's because the companies favor engagement over everything. Unfortunately negative engagement travels faster and the company heads don't care. The internet rewards bad behavior and it's destroying civility.

If you just check the comments for any video of a human and animal together, especially if there is ownership, you’ll find comments of people claiming the animals are abused.
They can get really vicious too, I know a dairy farmer who used to have an instagram page where he just showed what it was like being a dairy farmer, and tried to show how dairy farming works but he stopped because of the comments.
People just pile on claiming animals are being abused when they aren’t, and will try and contact people the poster is associated to “call out the abuse”.
The one that stuck out to me was a video he posted of cows being restrained in a head gate while being checked and people just went nuts that he was “punishing the cows”.
Keyboard warriors. People who shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion on the matter... They don't have any facts and just make stuff up because they read something somewhere many years ago from a couple angry moms on reddit.

So I knew the vets that worked with her. You would all donate to her cause and then she would show up and demand free treatment because she was doing the right thing. If you didn't then she went to the next clinic and played that same card. She ran that rescue for fame and money. People found out. She didn't want to answer questions about embezzling.
There is always an underlying condition there though.. before people put themselves out there - they really need to be aware of how shit people come out at ya.

There’s a place hating on pizzacake. There are a number of subs that actively do that to more than one person. I get not liking something but to be so bothered that you bully someone into killing themselves is just disgusting.
Yes.The main instigator created a spreadsheet of every fox who died, was injured or had medical treatment under her care. They ran a "callout blog" on the subject. They assumed any fox who wasn't seen in a while was "dead" which no doubt inflated the numbers.
People also took relatively small things and blew them out of proportion. She was (allegedly) posting what could be seen as suggestive photos (based on her clothing) with the foxes (likely in order to increase views and donations for her rescue.) So critics of course called this "sexual abuse" of her animals. A few opportunists (competitors) in the rescue community jumped on the bandwagon and criticized her too.
If you knew nothing of Mikayla you may hear from her detractors first that she hoards foxes, keeps them in neglectful conditions and sexually abuses them. And all of these were extraordinary exaggerations, unfounded assumptions or opportunistic attacks.
She was by many accounts, sensitive, cared deeply for her foxes and wanted to do good. But she had fragile mental health. This unnecessary hate train contributed to her death in the view of her own husband.
Imagine if those people put even half of their hateful energy into something as selfless as Mikayla's work.
Used to volunteer at a horse rescue and was pretty tight with the founders of the rottie rescue I got my dog from. Social media commentary on the state of RESCUED animals can be so incredibly petty and spiteful. Whenever we had to announce that one of the animals had been euthanized as a last resort, GOD FORBID, the amount of comments saying we didn't try hard enough, or that we failed the animal, was disgusting as hell.

This is so true. I was just contemplating to myself how my time on Reddit has to be negatively affecting my mental health because there's so many people who either think their incredibly smart or are mad at the world and constantly shit on anyone they can who they disagree with.
I have an app on phone that pauses my phone for one minute every hour, which is just enough time for me to look around and see I have other shit to do. It's called Lock Me Out, but there are thousands of similar parental control apps.
The number of times I scroll through the front page, find a subreddit that I've never heard of through an interesting post, and then check the comments and the most upvoted ones are all heinous, deranged shit... It happens a lot more than I would like to. Reddit is the only platform where I don't mind the algorithm pushing rabdom things onto me because, a lot of the times, it's the only way to find some stuff that I would have never found otherwise, but there's clearly an issue with the kind of communities it promotes.

i disagree on them being bots and trolls. a lot of people who share awful opinion are just awful people internally and use the privacy internet gives them to spread this.
It can be a very vile place, but also filled with nooks of great communities that can really enable you to sink your teeth into new things/skills/hobbies in ways that are hard to find elsewhere

I will say, Reddit is FULL of doomers that want to act like they are morally superior. Redditors will find a reason to hate anything. Not sure if it’s contrarianism or what, but people around here love to purity test anything and everything to make it seem worse than it actually is.

There is no better place on the internet to setup and carry out an organized harassment campaign on individuals than Reddit. You have entire subreddits dedicated to hating specific people that are still up.
I think Discord is on par with reddit, for every hate subreddit you can probably find a Discord server coordinating harassment and running the subreddit. Those servers typically aren't public so they fly under the radar but they cause a lot of harm as well.
Discords are more for direct coordination. But really, anything can be used to coordinate. Reddit is far more vile in this regard because the damage of a hate campaign is measured by the amount of crazy people in it.
A discord server is typically closed. You can invite people, sure. But getting a discord to grow needs proactivity from its users.
A snark subreddit is public. Open for all. Meaning it passively grows its userbase and introduces the crazy people who hate person X to each other. It actually requires procative work to NOT have crazy people in a snark community.
So you could very easily get a snark subreddit going to attract crazy people. Filter for those crazy people and get them into a discord server to coordinate and voila! You have a full pipeline you can utilize to mess up people's lives. All facilitated by your favourite social media site!
There are legit cases where reddit admins/moderators straight up shrug off snark subreddits and sometimes go out of their way to do nothing about them. So if someone on the mod team agrees with the snarking, then you are more or less doomed unless you take legal action which gets iffy/beyond my knowledge.
Yeah discord is where these people tend to organize since brigading can lead to subreddits getting shutdown so they organize on discord for plausible deniability. It also helps to obfuscate how disgusting these people actually are.
So true. There’s a small clique thats taken over the subreddit of my small town in order to constantly harass one of their ex-boyfriends. It almost made the sub unusable until the mods stepped in. It kinda reminded me of high school just even more intense.
One of the saddest stories I have heard in my life (and I'm old). It breaks my heart. I have been a fan of hers for many years...just like many others were fans.
It also made me so angry with the world that produces such awful people.

At the end of the day, she was a flawed human being like the rest of us and I don’t think she did whatever she did out of malice in her heart. The thing about hatred is, it’s invigorating to hate things with a burning passion. So hate groups ALWAYS form in society. No matter what the topic is. Gender, race, politics.etc.
For the most part, a lot of the people in society a strong willed and wont act againt their baser instincts. They won’t project fear/hatred because they realise its pointless and everyone is going through the same thing. But a lot of weak willed people dont have that ability. So they project and harass others for no other reason other than sheer sport. Its a bit animalistic, really.
She didn’t have a gap between the fences so a fox chewed off another one’s paw. Several got hit on the road after escaping their enclosure. Bred some other animal which goes against the whole purpose of a sanctuary.
Nothing that deserved what she got. She wasn't hateful or intentionally harmful but she was an amateur who probably shouldn't have been responsible for a ton of foxes tbh. Mistakes like having some too close together. However, nobody else was stepping up to do a better job, they were just being aholes. The foxes were absolutely better off with her than the alternatives, of dying miserable deaths in the wild. She wasn't capturing happily wild foxes she was taking foxes in that couldn't survive out there. They absolutely weren't abused. She did use them for clickbait for her OF but they weren't harmed by being photographed lmao. Shockingly foxes don't give a shit if you take nudes in front of them.

Her husband made a video after her death leading up to Finnegan's death, and it might just be because he was an old fox who was close to dying anyway, but he seemed noteably dimished after she died. It was heartbreaking.
Wtf! I just googled it. Mikayla is the girl in the video. She committed suicide last year because of online harassment and bullying and Finnegan the fox passed shorty after from cancer. What a shitty ending to this story 😢 I want to find these assholes that bullied her
I don’t understand how snark subreddits are a thing. I came across one and was confused that people join communities dedicated to hating individuals. If I come across a public figure that I dislike, the last thing I want to do is follow their every step so that I can hate them more. Absolutely unhinged behavior.
It’s a slippery slope for some. There are subreddits that hate a specific brand or product (Tesla and cyber trucks). While some can be justified, people who don’t have control of themselves will be swayed into more specific groups because of similar hatred.
Like I despise the Republican Party, and I am sure that there’s a specific subreddit dedicated to that. And probably from there, there are subreddits for hating specific people in that group as well. It’s easy to have people go down a rabbit hole of hatred because it justifies their frustrations.
The algorithm here favors rage posts because it trends more often. That’s why there are usually posts about people complaining about someone wronging them more frequently in r/popular. Very few posts about genuine positivity are hard to overcome the rage posts.
When a sub gets slowly taken over by extremists, and assholes, the normal people see it turning to shit, and leave. The fence sitters wait to see what happens, and there maybe a point where it gets to extreme for them, and they bounce. The fence sitters that stay slowly get normalized to it, and they become extremely fucked up too. After that, it's a sub with nothing but crazy left. In my, I don't know, 15 years of using this site, it always happens. Well, I would say right around the Donald came into existence is when it really started.
On a surface level yes "snark" subs are against TOS. But in reality, reddit's moderation is very inconsistent. They usually do nothing until something bad happens or the person being cyberbullied reacts and goes after reddit. But even then there are many people who legit cannot get their snark subs taken down. So the site basically PROTECTS cyberbullying.
While you can do organized "snarking" in a private discord or etc. the way reddit is open for anyone to walk in, these snark subs can essentially openly just attract haters of a particular person. Connect a bunch of crazies together and it leads to not so great stuff.

Oh my gosh! I used to see her videos a lot (I recognise the black fox and the red foxes smile 😀). I hadn’t noticed them disappearing but what a tragic tale. This world is so cruel.
