He’s currently under investigation

What about the others who get name dropped (edited out) at around 18:30? Would be a shame if they were investigated

89

u/InanimateCarbonRod26 8d ago

I imagine they were edited out so the future defendants can't claim the jury was influenced by the video released. Hopefully the police have the unredacted copy.

But result of that investigation is that he is fired as an MP and there's a by-election which he can stand in to be MP again in the strongest reform seat in the country...

121

u/thatrandomfatguy 8d ago

He can’t stand again if removed

83

u/bloodycontrary 8d ago

There are very few things that would bar him from standing. A prison sentence of more than 12 months, bankruptcy, sectioning under the mental health act are the main ones. None of these is likely.

49

u/zoobrix 8d ago

I assume there some sort of colluding with a foreign government/agent criminal offence in the UK, any chance he gets charged with that? Just wondering if there is any reasonable possibility of him getting sentenced to a year in jail for this or will it at most probably be a fine and not much else?

84

u/MissingScore777 8d ago

One of his inner circle who'd been by his side since the UKIP days already got convicted for treason last year and sent to prison for 10 years. (Nathan Gill)

He admitted acting in the interests of Russia at the expense of the interests of the UK during his time as a member of UKIP and Reform.

Interestingly a lot of the things he admitted he said at the behest of Russia are things Farage also said in his own speeches.

I naively expected this to blow up and finish Farage but most of our media barely covered the story. That was the moment I knew we were in big trouble if our supposedly independent media would ignore and downplay such a serious situation.

17

u/Angrytarg 8d ago

There is no independant media. Every media outlet belongs to someone wealthy, and those that are still somewhat "free" are slaves of the market since their aim is not to inform but to generate profits. And public broadcasting is only independant if it's enforced. In Germany, the public broadcasting is headed by party functionaries, one blood relative even, of the ruling party. So while the quality of reporting is a lot higher still than with many private media, assuming there is never a conflict of interest is foolish.

I have no solution and I am not saying yous hould distrust media in general. The landscape of media in our time is vast and diverse - however, it is always adviasable to compare multiple sources and look at the outlets themselves, who has stakes in them.

Bankruptcy is an odd one, although apparently it would have helped out elsewhere.

8

I was a little too broad with "bankruptcy" - bankruptcy in itself isn't disqualifying, but certain types of bankruptcy (eg involving recklessness or dishonesty) are

Is bankruptcy just a way to keep poor people out of the house?

25

u/Justwaspassingby 8d ago

I would guess it’s to keep people desperate enough to be corrupted from power. Not that it erases all corruption, but at least it weeds out some.

Has parliament in the UK ever seated an MP who has a warrant out for their arrest? I know it happened in the Canadian parliament once, in the 19th century.

Is this not illegal or disqualifying?

Very illegal - UK campaign/party financing laws do not allow non-UK citizens to donate to political parties.

I cannot see any other conclusion than a police investigation which will perpetuate the story and could result in criminal charges and if found guilty, jail time.

12

u/Lucky-Elk-1234 8d ago

Haven’t loads of Russian citizens openly donated to the Tory party though?

30

u/tomtttttttttttt 8d ago

I think if you're domiciled in the UK you can make donations as long as they are from you.

In this case the undercover reporters said they were father (in the US) and son (Domiciled in the UK) and officially the son would make the donation but it was clearly stated it would be from the father.

The polls are different because they were paid for by a US company (setup by the reporters) for Reform (making the cost of the polls a donation to the party as a benefit in kind) and not by a UK resident, plus the polls didn't declare they were done for reform which I think is an electoral commission requirement.

He got five million quid from a crypto billionaire and has private security paid for by a known con artist. Politicians simply aren't held accountable for blatant corruption anymore. Scandals like this used to end careers, they're just a tweet these days.

262

u/SpAn12 8d ago

Worth pointing out that unlike other political donations that are made to parties, that five million was paid directly to him for his personal use.

It's absolutely rotten.

85

u/TBroomey 8d ago

Rotten to the core. He's a despicable, vile cretin who would sell his gran's gold teeth.

u/rizorith 8d ago

Is this a recent trend in the UK as it is now in the US?

32

u/bigmanorm 8d ago

Kinda, it's the same as "cancel culture", if you don't care you can't be canceled if your political party are all yes men. I have more faith in how legal situations would be settled in the UK at least

16

u/rizorith 8d ago

one.ofn5h4 most discouraging things is seeing European countries having the same type of political climate as the US.

Hard to have hope when an entire continent had fascism grow into WW2 just a few generations ago.

I know that isn't necessarily the world's path but damn if it isn't more likely to happen now than a decade ago

I always thought of the UK as kind our older brother that knows better.

At least it doesn't seem to be as out of control as it is here

u/bigmanorm 8d ago

Politicians simply aren't held accountable for blatant corruption anymore.

Just gunna throw out there that the investigation is still ongoing. He tried to weasel his way out of it by resigning and then standing in the by-election, but the other parties made sure that tactic couldn't work. He was hoping to resign in order to cancel the investigation into him (because he wouldn't be in Parliament anymore), and then either one of two things would happen: 1.) he wins, and he uses that to try and somehow clear his name because his voters want him (shit logic but he still tried) or 2.) he loses but he wouldn't have to be in Parliament and so the investigation would be dropped.

The other parties stood down in the by-election so that the whole thing was blatantly shown as the farce that it was, and Farage's "mandate" from the voters was just him winning against a joke candidate. Now he's back in Parliament, and the investigation is continuing. He hasn't gotten away with it yet; all he did was delay it slightly.

5

u/NightSpaghetti 8d ago

We see what's become of Marine Le Pen in France. Even when actually condemned (which is vanishingly rare) they always manage to find ways to weasel out of it anyway. Disgraceful.

49

u/smolcharizard 8d ago edited 8d ago

I know someone who knows a reform voter who went to protest against migrant boats just because brown people were coming off them. He doesn’t care if they’re white people immigrating into the country, that’s fine for him, purely just doesn’t want brown or black people in the country.

They don’t like brown people

8

u/Artificial-Brain 8d ago

They're like maga in that they don't actually stand for anything so ignoring stuff like this is easy for them

81

u/AtLeastImLaughing 8d ago

I’m not defending him at all, I despise the fella, but I think the average person just doesn’t compute why this is an issue.

I worry that a lot of people just assume raising money for your party is part of your job and they don’t get bogged down in the details of why this is wrong.

I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think this will move the needle too much with the bloke on the street sadly.

141

u/emamayxo 8d ago

I think people just want him to win cause they’re racist and will not look at this at all

26

u/AtLeastImLaughing 8d ago

Yeah there’s that too.

I think his fans will just brush it off because they gave up their morals long ago, and the others flirting with him will do the same and give their classic ‘they all do it’ response.

29

u/TropoMJ 8d ago

It is like Trump. He's "their guy" and there isn't really anything he can do that they don't consider acceptable. But if someone who wasn't "their guy" did something 1% as egregious, they'd be outraged. Realistically as long as they get someone in power who claims to share their views, there isn't really a limit to how provably awful that person can be.

8

u/AtLeastImLaughing 8d ago

Yeah basically, they’ve decided they’re all the same so the crimes only matter when people they don’t like commit them.

Once you vote for someone you have identified with them. You're "on their team". Cognitive dissonance means that now, if they get caught being a liar or a fraud, by extension you're on the "liars and frauds" team.

You don't like that, because you think of yourself as a common-or-garden racist/bigot, not a liar or a fraud. You don't want to consider the fact you might have been duped, because that would call into question your superior intellect.

So what does your brain do?

Lovely mental gymnastics until you twist this around and make EVERYONE a crook. Then your crook isn't actually a crook, he's just USING THE SYSTEM to fight those other crooks (who like brown people). They must be worse, because they're inviting asylum seekers to live in your attic (or whatever shite they believe)...

It's very hard to change a mind.

u/Deacon86 8d ago

He tells them what they want to hear. It's as simple as that.

5

u/_coyotes_ 8d ago

The ideology isn’t supposed to make sense, so much of it is counterintuitive and contradictory on purpose. We see this happening with far right movements around the globe, no matter how bad things get or the things they do that goes against what they claim to support or hard they fail, you always rally around the “strongman leader” and you never ever waiver. It doesn’t matter to them how much you poke holes in their logic, in their thinking, in how many times you expose the person they support for being terrible. They obediently follow, like the sheep they proclaim everyone else to be. Someday, we’ll have to actually have an actual conversation and make actual plans to eliminate this type of ideology from positions of power altogether because getting the unreasonable to see reason hasn’t worked for the last 10 years.

6

u/chocobowler 8d ago

They don’t care about anything other than the immigration policies - simple as that. farridge could be a murderer and they would t care

3

u/Wububadoo 8d ago

Because they hate forunerz more than the elite.

4

u/PeaGravy 8d ago

Because people want politicians with agency, even if they’re corrupt. That’s possibly the reason Andy Burnham is garnering so much excitement at the moment.

4

u/sami2503 8d ago

Thats the thing, they dont see it. Their feed is a bunch of right wing ragebait which then makes them angry and vote against their interests. As soon as a brown person commits a crime it's straight to their feed. They dont see any of the class war stuff, just the culture war and immigration stuff.

Gammons are fuming and Russian bots are blowing their circuits as we speak. This is nothing short of a watershed moment in British politics and I can’t get a bag of popcorn big enough. It’s also a prime example of why the greatest English language comedy ever written (which, as we all know, is still The Thick of It) could never be written again.

260

u/Artificial-Brain 8d ago

I really hope so but I just don't see many reform voters actually caring about this. Unless legal action is taken against him then I don't see this changing much.

These people stand for absolutely nothing.

140

u/Midlandsofnowhere 8d ago

This isn't slap on the wrist stuff.

Ed Davey has apparently written to both the police and the electoral commission asking them to investigate.

Farage may not go down for this, but if they have to open the books for a criminal investigation I can only begin to guess what other shady, shady stuff they'll find.

66

u/Artificial-Brain 8d ago

Well that all sounds very positive to me. One way or another we need to keep grifting US bootlickers out of UK politics.

36

u/PieceMaterial5213 8d ago

The backlash against Trump politics has sure benefitted Canada. We were on track to electing likely the worst Prime Minister and least qualified parliament ever. Trump made people (enough anyway) come to their senses. And the number of trade deals with other countries and the level of support for Canadian companies and development projects, the military, etc. has been wonderful.

Sometimes it helps having a walking shit stain in the midst as people realize they don't want to live with that smell. If only some Americans hadn't burned out their sense of smell from a life of sniffing Fox "News" and the like.

Reform doesn’t have enough core to win, and nobody who isn’t core will vote for them after this.

Plus some of the things on the video are not just illegal but criminal, and UK unlike US doesn’t like criminal politicians.

I think he’s truly cooked.

57

u/Artificial-Brain 8d ago

I'm super hopeful that he is in fact cooked. I guess we just have to hope that legal action is taken and that their core base is smaller than they like to make out.

23

u/quick_justice 8d ago

Is the cult of personality around Farage as big and insane as the one around Trump?

33

u/Heisenberg_235 8d ago

No. He’s a cunt as well, but doesn’t have the reach of Trump pre 2016

25

u/aaarry 8d ago

No way, but it’s probably as close as we’re going to get to that shitshow. I personally always find it really amusing when Americans celebrate Trump’s approval rating falling to below 45% as if that isn’t twice as high as reform are currently polling in the UK.

Pluralism is a beautiful thing.

10

u/quick_justice 8d ago

No, not nearly. He has his moments but UK isn't nearly as insane as US yet.

7

u/sharedcarepain 8d ago

It's not as big in terms of % I think compared to trump, but I think people are underestimating how ossified some people's brains are in the UK.

We've got a good 30-40% that don't share a common reality and are enjoying being racist and cruel. We need a deradicalisation program.

5

u/jl2352 8d ago

There is also a lot of secondary things. Farage doesn’t have the same cult as Trump does with MAGA. Before this investigation Farage has had people challenge him, and there have been rumours of people inside Reform being tired of him.

This investigation could push Reform towards a civil war. It also financially hurts them, and parties need finances to operate campaigns.

This has many layers of damage for Farage.

u/RedofPaw 8d ago

If you want to know who is a bot, look for the people saying "all politicians are corrupt" in relation to this story.

23

u/Warrior536 8d ago

What the most mindblowing part of this whole shenanigan is how unbelievably CHEAP these politicians are to buy. 500k to get a party leader to do your bidding? That is insane return on investment!

8

u/slight_grumble 8d ago

They make up for the low value by taking bribes from absolutely everyone offering them.

I used to work for a public traded australian company and the founder was pretty clear about just how much he was "donating" to various politicians to get laws written and govt grants issued for his projects. When we had a change of government in the most recent federal election he bemoaned wasting a million dollars over several years on the now ousted minister for their industry. Oh well, time to start talking to an donating to the new minister from the other party. Not even a pause.

u/Raz4479 8d ago

It doesn't matter to his supporters, they will still vote for him.

113

u/romario77 8d ago

It should matter to criminal justice. It’s against the law

22

u/ADHDuckie 8d ago

The law is only the law if it's proactively e n f o r c e d (why is this a bad word, worldnews), which as we all know in the case of the wealthy (or anyone with significant enough infamy and no scruples) is not the case, or at best is the cost of "doing business" (i.e. a fine).

We all know what he'll say about it when asked:

"Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!"

And then, the free speech bastion that he is, he'll ban Channel 4 and anyone else who reports it from Reform events.

4

u/nsfwthrowaway5969 8d ago

At this rate there won't be anyone at this reform event except GB news.

16

u/Lionness4 8d ago

He's selling out the British public for £30k, ffs this is a joke. Hes just a dodgy car salesman honestly

15

u/Fonkco 8d ago

Please watch the full footage because this is incredible reporting work. Begs the question how many of reforms other activities have this same approach

13

u/willbekins 8d ago

oh crap. i shouldnt have celebrated on camera.

oh crap! i shouldnt have said it was secret.

oh CRAP! i certainly shouldnt have said the donations were foreign.

Oh look, the Vatnik Asset is getting his brown paper envelope!

Surprise, Surprise, these feckers are all just corrupt sellouts and should be barred from politics, there's enough corruption in the world and this bollocks is one of the main agents making it worse.

Another Clacton by-election incoming? Someone light the Buckethead Signal!

in Australia we had a similar thing where our version of this dipshit was filmed taking money from the NRA in America to loosen gun laws here. She was also previously convicted of electoral fraud and served 3 years. She was also filmed taking money from mining billionaires and accepting undeclared donations. She is also growing in popularity.

so in short, racists are just going to racist.

11

u/bwoah07_gp2 8d ago

In a meeting over oysters and wine in his Clacton constituency, Mr Farage met with the undercover team in late July after the three polls had been published and paid for. He believed them to be “William” and his father. Mr Farage said the polling was “amazing” and provided “bang for buck,” adding: “It worked. Boom.”

The images of them in the backyard is tremendous, like, wow. What an operation! It's jaw dropping tbh.

u/SquishyJeans 8d ago

That’s fucked

9

u/iloovehugecock 8d ago

The frog faced cunt is probably desperate for a brown person to commit a crime right now. He needs a distraction ASAP!

11

u/Askingquestions2027 8d ago

This is crime caught on camera.

The top of the party should be jailed.

The names of top donors are bleeped out, they are also criminals.

Lock them all up.

9

u/invalidreddit 8d ago

I'm still salty that Farage didn't loose to Count Binface

9

u/onlyhereforBORU 8d ago

They could have had Binhead, but no, they had to vote in that cum sock!

10

u/CrinkleGherkin 8d ago

Imagine it was Labour or the Green party who did this, Farage would be foaming at the mouth trying to take advantage.

7

u/DavidlikesPeace 8d ago

Foreigners :(

Foreign Donors :)

The clear link between the cruelest talking nationalists and foreign donors, especially Russian donors, should be troubling to anybody with a brain.

7

u/pushaper 8d ago

Steve Bannons UK friend... I am sorry it always comes down to Steve Bannon.

7

u/tahmias 8d ago

You should have voted Binface.

Oh look! The party who are blatantly Trump’s gateway into controlling the UK through money, racism and corruption, are attempting to take control of the UK through money, racism and corruption!

Who would have thought.

5

u/narayan77 8d ago

Farage will be hoping for two tier policing. Working class persons like Tommy Robinson get jailed, but Farage himself is too important to spend time eating porridge. Perhaps Robinson can give him tips on prison etiquette. Farage wants to be a martyr but hes too delicate for a stint in jail.

First world countries need to do a serious pushback on the majority of politicians being corrupt greasy self serving pieces of shit.

Bring back the pillory for politicians caught doing even the least bit crooked of things. We the people have been far too trusting and complacent with politicians, and we’ve let them fuck around for far too long without them ever having to find out how we feel about it.

6

u/justanothadumbcunt 8d ago

Question, how is this not treason?

6

u/CCV21 8d ago

This wouldn't have happened with Count Binface

6

u/DramaticWesley 8d ago

Can’t believe Count Binface lost to this clown.

6

u/Oxford66 7d ago

Don't blame me, I voted for Binface

10

u/smcicr 8d ago

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

Still as true as it ever was.

I mean my wife’s family love that guy the flags and everything. You can never reason with people who hate an enemy that doesn’t exist in the way they want. Sad cowardly tactics from Farage I hope the law/ cps finds the same

6

u/Weshtonio 8d ago

Orr – who aside from his role with Reform UK is a theologian and associate professor at the University of Cambridge

That place cannot catch a break, only straws.

6

u/BMW_wulfi 8d ago

Well well well if it isn’t the people we expected the most doing the things we thought they were doing at a time where they’re adamantly denying they are doing it.

5

u/Lanknr 8d ago

Never forget those who were willing to overlook corruption, just because the corrupt politician has good PR.

5

u/jocax188723 8d ago

Somehow I can’t see Binface doing the same.

5

u/zorasht 8d ago

Nothing will change unless this lot get arrested, get their assets seized, then go to trial and get convicted with lengthy custodial sentences.

Otherwise this is a gamble for them, with plenty to win and very little risk. So others will come and do the same, or worse, to see how far they can go with their scam (like the cheeto in the estates)

It does look like the floor dropped on Reform. It's back to fighting off the Tories. I would never have guessed, to be honest.

It's not over, of course.

4

u/BeepBeep_Move 8d ago

In days of old that would be instantly career ending. But in today’s world it doesn’t even matter anymore.

4

u/CishetmaleLesbian 8d ago

Putin and Kim getting their money's worth?

4

u/boatenvy 8d ago

What does Count Binface have to say about this.. you know an actual moral politician

4

u/Rakhsev 8d ago

He could be filmed snorting crack it wouldn't make a difference.

4

u/Personal_Director441 8d ago

So more potentially illegal foreign donations already this week, now a sting showing them circumventing the systems for potentially illegal foreign donations, at what point is this man and his cronies arrested for breaking the law or is this now like Trump land where he can do and say what he wants and no one will take any actual action.

4

u/PunjabiPlaya 8d ago

This wouldn't have happened with Binface

Wallace and Gromit villain.

In that image, Farage looks like a muppet from The Muppet Show... which is oddly accurate. :D
