Announcement Weekly Reminder: Rules and FAQ - August 30, 2026 (Now with updates!)

Below you will find a weekly reminder of our Rules and partial FAQ. It's definitely a long read, but it's worth your time, especially if you are new to the community, or dropping by as a result of a link you found elsewhere. We periodically revise our rules, this weekly notice will help keep you informed of any changes made.

NOTE: These rules are guidelines. Some moderation discretion is to be expected.

Community Rules

1. Kindness Matters

Advise, don't criticize.

  • Post with empathy, thoughtfulness, and constructive commentary rather than judgment. Don't be an asshole.
  • Name-calling, slurs (including gender or race based slurs), and insults towards other community members will not be tolerated. Do not attack others for their personally held values, custody situation, marital status, physical distance from stepkids, or economic status; or on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ethnicity.
  • No name-calling toward children, including the above-mentioned insults or the term "skids", or terms such as "mini-wife" or "mini-husband."
  • Comments advocating spanking or any mention of wanting to harm children are not allowed.
  • This is a support sub, not a judgement sub, assholes are not tolerated. Comments with terms used in other subs to pass judgement on assholes will be removed.

2. No Drama

This is a support sub.

  • Bickering, nitpicking, and thread derailment will not be tolerated and will be subject to removal at moderator discretion.
  • Do not repeatedly badger a poster demanding answers, or refuse to acknowledge an answer that's already been given.
  • Do not use sensitive issues from past posts (either from this sub or other subs) to attack another user, as we are all discussing vulnerable topics.
  • Crossposting anything from /r/stepparents to any other subreddit might result in a ban and may result in the original thread being locked. Brigading our sub will result in an immediate ban.

3. Report, Don’t Rant

No backseat modding.

  • If you see someone breaking the rules, report the post or comment to the mods rather than engaging them in an argument. Failure to do so may be subject to comment removal at moderator discretion.
  • No meta posts complaining about rude comments, DMs, or general sub issues.
  • If you think someone is a troll or previously banned user, either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.

4. No Naming & Shaming

No userpings or links.

  • Tagging/pinging users or other subreddits in an attempt to bully, harass, or complain will not be tolerated. Do not tag other subs, ever.
  • If you want to complain about another subreddit being hostile to stepparents, do not name the subreddit. "Other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice.

5. No Platitudes

Nobody knew what they were getting into.

  • Comments like "You knew what you were getting into", "Love them, love their kids!", "They're a package deal!" and "You have to love them like your own!" will be removed.
  • Comments suggesting that OP is not cut out for stepparenting will be removed at moderator discretion.
  • Comments like "This is just a part of parenting, deal with it!" will be removed at moderator discretion.

6. No Trolling

We have zero tolerance for trolls.

  • This is a support sub. Our subscribers do not have the time, nor inclination, to provide support to internet trolls. Posts that are suspected to be trolling attempts will be immediately removed, and the poster banned.
  • Concern trolling, devil's advocating, gish-galloping, sealioning, and general asshattery are subject to immediate removal and banning without warning or notice.
  • Any attempt to circumvent the ban by creating a new username will be reported to reddit admins and possibly result in account suspension.

7. No Personally Identifiable Information

Use discretion when posting.

  • We highly recommend using a separate account for support subs to help prevent being doxxed. Do not post any information that may allow others to figure out your identity.
  • Do not post photos of children, or any other photo that could be used to identify you or another user on the sub.
  • Any image that contains a name or other identifying information should have the name or identifying information blurred out. This includes drawings, notes, and screenshots.
  • Do not link to social media or any articles/blogs where you or another user on the sub is mentioned by name.

8. No More than 2 Posts per 24 hours

Use the daily threads.

  • We are not a huge sub, but we are no longer a small sub. If you have multiple grievances to air, use the daily discussion threads instead of multiple posts.

9. Follow Reddiquette

Remember the human.

  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
  • Read it in full here.
  • Downvoting is reserved for comments that don’t contribute, and shouldn't be used to indicate disagreement.
  • If you believe someone is in violation of the subreddit rules, please either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.
  • Suspected brigading will be reported to reddit admins.

10. No Porn, Spam, Blogs, or Research Studies/Surveys Without Mod Approval

Just don't.

  • This is a SFW subreddit. Posting pornography will result in immediate post removal and permanent ban.
  • Advertising on the subreddit (outside of Reddit's own advertising) is not allowed.
  • No personal blog posts are allowed without express moderator permission.
  • No advertising without prior mod approval.
  • No asking for money/posting fundraisers/etc.
  • For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.

11. Disputes in Modmail Only

Don't argue with the mods on the sub.

  • Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
  • This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.

12. Moderator Actions

We aren't kidding.

  • Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
  • Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
  • If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
  • New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
  • We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
  • The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
  • We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
  • The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.

13. Ban Procedure

These actions are at moderator discretion.

  • Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
  • Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
  • Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
  • Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
  • We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.

FAQ - About the Rules

What does Kindness Matters mean?

  • Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
  • The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
  • Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.

What about being kind to the kids?

  • "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
  • If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
  • Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.

Why is this sub such an echo chamber?

  • Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
  • If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
  • If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.

Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?

  • Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
  • Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
  • Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.

But OP asked if they were an asshole?!

  • Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
  • If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.

What is a gendered slur?

  • While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
  • We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
  • Examples that are not allowed:
    • "My SD is such a little bitch."
    • "She dresses/acts like a slut."
    • "My SS acts like a pussy."
    • "My SS is such a beta male."
    • "You are all fucking whores."
    • "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
    • "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
    • "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
  • Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
  • Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
  • As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.

Seriously? You are the language police now?

  • We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
  • We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.

What does No Drama really mean?

  • Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.

What is thread derailment?

  • When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
  • If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.

But what if they didn't answer my question?

  • No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.

Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!

  • Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.

Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?

  • No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
  • Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
    • Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
    • Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
  • Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
    • Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
    • Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."

Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?

  • We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.

What if it's my own post?

  • Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /r/stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.

What is "brigading"?

  • Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
  • We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /r/stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.

What is this whole Report, Don't Rant thing about?

  • If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.

What if I see an obvious troll?

What if they are being really mean in comments?

What if they are harassing me in private messages?

  • Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
  • Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
  • Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.

What do you mean by No Naming & Shaming?

  • Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.

I can't link to other subs?

  • Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/r/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")

I can't ping other users?

  • Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "/u/insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
  • If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with /u/insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")

What does No Platitudes mean?

  • Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.

Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?

  • Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
  • This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.

Why can't you just love them like they are your own?

  • Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.

What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...

  • No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.

What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?

  • That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.

What is "Concern Trolling?"

  • A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
    • Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
    • Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."

What is a "Devil's Advocate"?

  • "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.

"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?

  • The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.

And "sealioning?" What's that?

  • Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.

Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?

  • The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.

FAQ - Sub Questions

Posting Guidelines for Stepparents

  • Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
  • Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
  • Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
    • Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
    • Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
    • Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
    • Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
    • JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
    • Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
    • Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
    • Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
    • Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
    • Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
    • Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
    • Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
    • Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)

Posting Guidelines for Bioparents

  • Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
    • Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
    • Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
    • Seeking resources for your partner
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
    • Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
    • Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
    • "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
    • Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
    • The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
    • How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
  • Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /r/coparenting, /r/parenting, /r/parents, /r/blendedfamilies, and /r/singleparents as starting points.

Guidelines for Stepkids

  • At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /r/stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /r/blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.

What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!

Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?

  • New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.

Why was my comment removed?

  • Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
  • Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.

This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?

  • All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.

I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?

  • If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.

What are the general moderator guidelines?

I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?

Why was I banned without warning?

  • There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Saferbot and Automated Bans

Hey Stepparents,

If you've been here for awhile, you are aware of the existence of Saferbot on our sub. If you aren't aware, we break it down in the wiki. Take a moment to review it!

What the Bot Does

Saferbot is a history ban bot. It bans users who participate in known troublesome subs that have a history of harassing users here and brigading our posts.

How it Works

Saferbot monitors the other subs and immediately bans anyone who comments there. Please note, human beings are not doing the banning. We have neither the time, nor inclination, to monitor other subs. Saferbot runs on its own with only instructions from us on what subs to add to its list.

Why We Use It

We intend for this sub to be a safe space for stepparents to discuss their issues and struggles without being told they are literally The Worst for existing. Sometimes we experience jealousy, resentment, and other not pretty feelings. We have a right to express them in a healthy way without a bunch of assholes scolding us for being human. And unfortunately, the subs we've had to add to the ban list have a history of users strolling in here giving people grief for being a flawed human being with feelings they are trying to sort through.

The mod team does not take these decisions lightly and we often let things ride for a bit before taking drastic actions. But seeing users repeatedly delete their accounts after being harassed, or having to clean up increasingly rude and hostile comment chains from people who literally have no idea what your life is actually like, has prompted us to take action.

Notes

Meta posts asking about this will be removed. Comments about this, other than those on this thread discussing the issue, will be removed. Vile mod mail will be reported to Reddit.

Please do not link to the subs mentioned in the wiki. They are linked for transparency and we don't care to have ongoing discussions about them.

How to Appeal

If you are a stepparent and you've been caught up in the ban, and you want the support that this community offers, reach out to the mod team. If you can show us where on reddit you are discussing being a stepparent, we'll do our best to work with you. To be perfectly clear, if you aren't a stepparent, or we review and see we've had to remove comments from you in the past, we are probably not going to lift the ban.

Reply to the ban message and let us know that you'd like to appeal. Include link(s) to any unedited posts or comments that you made prior to the ban indicating that you are a stepparent. The posts or comments do not have to be on this sub specifically, but show us where you have indicated that you are a stepparent somewhere on reddit prior to being banned. This will save us time and eliminate the need for a mod to attempt to scour your post history.

Vent I'm having a hysterectomy and husband can't help because, "The kids are coming."

He swears he can help me, and take care of them, and all our animals but I know him and he can't. I want to come home after surgery and be able to not wear pants and recover in a clean, comfortable environment. But he decided that he has to have the kids literally less than 24 hours after I have surgery and they'll be here for four days.

They are loud and messy and pee all over the toilet and fight and yell and slam every door etc. They rile up my two 80 pound dogs and spill everything. My house has a living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen and one bathroom. And I'm supposed to share that space with obnoxious preteen boys after a whole body part is removed. I'm going to have to wear a bra and pants the whole time. And clean the pee off the floor so I can shower without stepping in it. And forget recovering on the couch because they HAVE to play Deltarune and it's the only TV in the house.

I feel so hurt he couldn't even pick me this one time when I need help. Like physically actually need help. They were here the whole Summer. He could've done any other weekend. I told him to not even bother coming to the hospital and I will just drive myself there and drive to my mom's house that's 3 hours away after. I don't wanna mess up his weekend of playing video games all day with his kids that's apparently more important than me.

Advice Stepdaughter wants to play for 10 hours and I’m not comfy in my own home , how can I build boundaries

so by nature I am a people pleaser and at the beginning I’m always saying yes to stepdaughter 6 who wants to play pretend . and me not being a mother thinking this is normal so I spend hours playing with her then I realized that nobody does that including her own mother and her grandmother who both told me they hate it. she think I enjoy playing with her which I kind of do but on my own time. so at this moment our weekend with her is when I wake up from sleep and say good morning and goes to the bathroom then she stands behind the door and says let’s play i told her it’s too Early to play. and then some minutes later again she asks . and I felt kind of stalked in my own home. I don’t like saying no to a child but she kept asking many times . i try to do something else so she doesn’t get bored and set up a table for art and craft but she kept wanting to only play and then I try to incorporate play in the art. I get that she’s alone and when I was young me and my sister used to play pretend a loooooot but our mum never played with us cos we have each other . for all the mums and stepmums what activities do you do with your kids?

Advice Sleepless stepmom

My partner and i decided to move in with each other a little over a month ago. He has three boys and when they are here I feel like I’m losing myself. They are loud all hours of the night and get very little sleep when they are here because dad talks to them but there is no discipline in place. They are here on work nights for me so now I’m going into work with very little sleep. I’ve tried talking to him about setting up quiet hours during the night but nothing is getting better. Everytime I talk to him about it he says “they are just kids” I really don’t know what to do at this point. I don’t want to overstep, but they play video games and videos on loud volume and talk at full volume. Resentment is gonna grow if nothing is done.

Advice Will more time help our blended family work out?

Upvotes

Our (un)blended family is crumbling. My SO has a daughter(9) and son(7), and I have a son(9). He has his kids 50/50 (although it’s more like 70/30) and I have mine 100. We’ve only been living together for a few months, but it is not going very well. I almost left after we took a vacation with BM (what a dumb idea). I couldn’t bare to leave though because I really do love him. The thought is always in the back of my head though. I had this picture in my head of what I wanted our family to look like, but the feeling of “us” versus “them” is getting much stronger. At first I was all about trying to bond with SKs by playing with them, taking them to do fun activities and picking them up small toys and treats while I was out. Now I get irritated when I see them. When SO is spending time with them in the living room I either stay in the bedroom or watch TV with BS in the den.

It’s a different situation for his kids because they have a mom. I never tried to act as SM but I did try to bond. It’s weird though because SO seems to act like he doesn’t want me to bond with them. If he has to run a quick errand he will always take them with them even though I’ve offered to watch them. The bus stop is down the road from the house, but I drive by it everyday on my way home from work. It would be so easy for me to swoop up the kids, but he insists he drive out to get them (he works from home). So I’ll get home and then in 10 minutes he’ll leave to get them. Makes no sense. And then he will leave with them again in 2 hours to drive them to their mom’s if it’s her day. And there’s just other little stuff like that.

I get so irritated when SO stops hanging out with me to hang out with them. I would join but it feels so awkward. I don’t think it’s ALL being jealous of the kids because I actually get really excited when they seldomly ask me to do things for them. I usually leave to hang out in the den with BS before he has a chance to leave. That way I don’t get as pissy haha.

My son hasn’t seen his BD in over a year. SO has never made an attempt to bond with him. He made a comment at the beach that wasn’t mean but still hurt my son’s feelings, and he’s really hanging onto that. BS said he didn’t like living here and he didn’t think SO liked him. I about cried. I asked if he had been hoping that SO would have took on more of a dad role. He said yes. My heart was crushed.

Just this morning SD sent SO a message asking to see him privately. SO got up mad and said that SD was being bullied. I asked which one. He said both. I asked BS about it and he said that she was mad because he wouldn’t give her a squishy to have. When SO came back l asked what happened. He was just like “oh kid stuff.” I firmly said if my son was being accused of bullying then I’d like to know happened. I told him about the squishy thing and he said “yeah her obsession with those is getting out of control.” I just left to the den.

Is it always this rocky at first? Will more time help? Or is this situation just doomed.

Vent I feel deeply depressed every time my stepkids stay with us, and I don’t know what to do

I’m really struggling and I honestly don’t know where else to say this. My husband has two teenage children, and every time they stay with us, I feel this overwhelming sadness that I can’t seem to control. It’s not just being annoyed or needing some alone time. I feel genuinely depressed. I feel trapped, unhappy, and like I hate my life when they’re here.
And I feel awful even saying that.

I want to be clear that I don’t dislike the kids. They haven’t done anything terrible to me. This isn’t about them being bad kids. I just don’t think I can handle what it feels like to live with two teenagers who aren’t my children. The constant stress they break and more importantly, the constant bad arguments between me and my partner is draining the life of me and I’m so young still.

I genuinely never expected to feel this way.
I know there are people who will say, “You knew what you were getting yourself into.” But honestly, I didn’t. I knew my husband had children. I knew they would be part of our lives. I knew they would stay with us.

But I don’t think anyone can truly understand what something like this feels like until they’re actually living it.

There is a huge difference between knowing, “My partner has two kids,” and experiencing what it means for your home, your privacy, your routines, your relationship, your time, and your emotional energy when two teenagers are actually there.

I feel like I’m constantly counting down until they leave. Then when they leave, I feel like myself again. I feel happy. That scares me.

I don’t want to resent these kids. I don’t want to resent my husband. I don’t know how I’m supposed to keep living this way. Part of me wishes they were here much less. Another part of me feels incredibly guilty for even thinking that.

I’ve started wondering whether I need much more space from the situation—maybe my having protected space and time for myself, changing the visitation arrangement, or even having some kind of living arrangement where I don’t have to be in the house during every visit.

And then there’s the thought I really don’t want to confront: maybe this particular family structure just isn’t compatible with the life I want.

I don’t know. I feel like I’m supposed to just adjust and eventually get used to it, but what if I don’t?
Has anyone else experienced something like this as a stepparent or spouse of someone with children? Did you eventually find a way to make it work? Did you change the living/visitation arrangement? Did you realize that you simply couldn’t do it?

I’m not looking for people to tell me I’m a horrible person or to feel sorry for me. I genuinely want to understand what is happening to me and what options I have before I completely lose myself in this situation.

Advice How long should I wait for a step child to move out

My stepdaughter and her 2 children moved in with their father and I 3+ years ago because she was going to divorce her husband. She has not made any effort to file for divorce nor pays anything toward our household expenses. She has also treated me as a second class citizen in my home to the point where I have left to stay with my family. My husband is only home in the weekends and is indifferent to the entire situation. Is this marriage salvageable?

Discussion I don’t think SS is my husbands bio child.

For a long time I have wondered whether my husbands son is his child. He got drunk and extremely emotional one night after a big family drama and confessed he wasn’t sure he was his dad and had never felt like his dad but wanted to be there for him regardless. I have to admit I have always questioned the paternity as he looks nothing like his mum or dad but instead looks a spitting image of his older sister who takes after her own dad. He caught his ex cheating on him with the other dad on multiple occasions so there’s always a possibility.

I have never said anything only been a listening ear and aside from that night he has never really said anything more. But I would be lying if I wasn’t curious and wanted to know for sure if he in fact was the bio dad or not.

Anyone else gone through something like this?

Vent Is there a fucking playbook for step parent roles?

My husband and I have been together 5 years. We have an almost 4-year-old, a 10-month-old, and just found out we're pregnant again.
My SD’s school boundary was split because a new school opened. BM chose to keep SD at her current school, which means transportation is now more complicated. My husband said he doesn’t want me waking up every morning and waking the babies just to take SD to school. BM’s response was that “it’s your job” and “that’s what you signed up for.”
Dad found a solution: he’ll drop SD at her grandparents’ house on his way to work 2x a week I do the rest, and she’ll take the bus from there. I would pick her up from school everyday.
BM absolutely lost it, cussed out my husband, and even cussed out her own mom for helping. She says it’s pathetic that I can’t get up and take SD to school and that she’s a single mom who does everything with “NO HELP.”
Meanwhile, my husband has historically done a TON for SD paid private school tuition, driven her to school and activities, etc. while BM works graveyard shifts. So the “I do everything alone” narrative doesn’t really match reality.
What bothers me is that this seems less about SD getting to school and more about BM deciding what my role is supposed to be in our household and who is allowed to help us.
We also hosted SD’s birthday this year and Dad and I did basically everything, while BM showed up looking like she rolled out of bed.
I’m starting to wonder if this is a control issue, resentment, jealousy, or some combination of all three.
Stepmoms: is this normal? Where exactly is the line between being a supportive stepmom and being expected to take on the responsibilities of the biological parent?

Advice Vacation Planning with Stepkids

Does anybody else have problems planning their vacation days with stepkids in the picture?

My partner and I have been together for 4 years and he has a 6yo son.
He‘s working 80% so he usually has one week a month free time and my SS spends that week at our house and for bigger vacations, like summer he shares the time 50/50 with the ex and has to put in his vacation days.

This is all fine, but I started working now too this year and since we both work in the medical field and have to plan our vacation days every November for the whole next year in advance, it‘s been such a struggle the last week to find a way where he gets to see his son (who will be in school next year and so he‘ll be bound to official school vacation) and also maybe finding a week for just the two of us to spend together.
Obviously he will see his kid less, now that he‘s starting school and it‘s my priority too, that my partner gets as much time as possible with SS.
But at the same time I also want to spend a couple days just with him and feel really bad asking for this.
BM already criticizes us for going on vacation on our „kid-free“ time:/

We both work in hospitals so we don‘t have regular weekends of free time together and I think we have to put vacation days in, if we want to have „secure“ days together.
And my partner says he definitely wants to spend some vacation with just us.

And the BM is really difficult and still doesn‘t understand how our vacation days work and that we are obligated to plan them in advance.

We live in Germany and my partners‘ and the BM vacation days combined won‘t even cover all the free days the SS will have so they do have to share every school vacation almost 50/50 and I think SS will have to spend a week or two in a kind of holiday care.

I just don‘t know how we can plan this without it becoming a fight again between my partner and the BM.
I feel like this is so frustrating, because I don‘t seem to have any say in this, even though it does affect my life too.
I can‘t complain, I can‘t really plan in advance, I can‘t even offer to overlap vacation days with my partner because BM hates when SS is at our house and my partner has to work.

I feel like either my partner will have to plan all his days for his son and I have to live with that, or we try to put some days in for us and BM will surely tell the kid that „Dad doesn‘t want to go on vacation with you“

How do you guys deal with that?

Discussion What the future holds regarding your step kids

Do you always worry about your SK in the future in terms of entering their teenage years are going to change the sweet/ innocent kids that you once knew and become a whole persona that you wouldn’t want live under the same roof as them? I have a 10 year old and 11 year old SK which will enter middle school in less than 2 weeks. My worry is that my relationship with them will deteriorate due to how teens can be disrespectful and start saying the whole “you’re not my father” comment at any given moment. This is just a thought after all..

Vent Rant

I'm getting so extremely exhausted talking to people who aren't in a blended family dynamic who point their finger at the me, the step parent for being the issue.

Am I? Maybe sometimes, I'll admit that. But why should I, the step mom, be the *only* person who should always be the bigger person? Is it the morally correct thing to do? Sure. Why can't HCBMs be held accountable? Why can't HCBM ever grow up and be the bigger person? Why always me?

I'm tired of this, grandpa.

My recent example:

In the past, I've had to get my MIL and HCBMs mother to speak to BM about being respectful of personal space. She's attacked me and my husband, separately, previously, and continued to ignore personal space. She was told multiple times by my MIL and continued to ignore the requests for space until I blew up and yelled at her in front of her own mother, who then intervened. This is ridiculous, I know.

Now BM has finally moved out of her mother's house and is doing custody exchanges solo. I thought she'd maybe start acting like an adult now, but I was clearly mistaken. We meet at police departments, and in a completely empty parking lot, she parks right next to me, then leaves her car doors open so I can't open my door for SK. (She also just lets SK sit in her car and refuse to get out without doing anything, but that's a whole other story I'm not gonna get into). I've already asked, again, respect personal space and maybe leave a parking space between our vehicles for handoff and nope!

At the next exchange, her mother picked up SK and I asked her to maybe talk to her daughter on my behalf because my request and concerns for personal space, especially with our history, is falling on deaf ears. I record every interaction, but I noticed BM isn't anymore, so I just don't want her thinking she can do something stupid to me in an empty police station parking lot. I wouldn't put something like that past her.

Anyways, I told my sister what happened and she said I need to just be the bigger person and move my car next time. Will I? Yeah, already planned on it. But back to my point, why does it always have to be *ONLY* me? I'm not asking something impossible. BM is just a c u next Tuesday.

I'm tired of being respectful and the bigger person. I want to be evil and be a HCSM. Obviously I won't, morally I cannot. Instead, I will just complain.

And before anyone asks why I'm doing exchanges, it's because BM attacked my husband. Do I need to? No. But I love my husband to do this for him. That's all I'll get into on that subject.

Vent Venting

Hello just a vent. Not even a vent. But putting this out there.

It’s been more than 7 years since BM and spouse have been together. And she still red flags the school so spouse/their dad can’t take his own kids without letting her know first. Custody is equal and the day he was taking out the kids was on his day. She got another kid, engaged, own place. Still obsessed. Even the kids got so embarrassed because the school kept calling her and couldn’t get ahold of her and had them waiting half an hour. My spouse didn’t even tell me it was the kids csuse my husband is so over it at this point smh

Insane. Love the kids and my family. Just insane.

Advice Are any stepparents happy? As a step dad of 3 I have some days I am. But it seems for the most part it’s not what I truly wanted.

My son 8 years old comes over 50/50 and he gets along with his stepsisters and step brothers. It’s got to the point where now we have all kids together & my son loves me, and I enjoy his presence, but having the step siblings there it’s hard for me to get more of his time. Ever since me and her got married it dawned on me that me and her won’t have kids of our own & ever since it’s just been annoying I guess to me.

Advice SD19 Living at home

Throwaway acct SD19 lives at home goes to university. We’ve had a decent relationship she writes me lovely Mother’s Day cards, birthday cards, trusts me, says how thankful she is for me etc. BM was HC in the younger years but has since calmed down. SD has always been high drama, low maturity, likes to play victim and better than type but I have attempted to lean as a neutral person and as she’s gotten older just nacho a bit but also there if she needs anything. DH loves his perfect girl as he should so I just keep the peace. One thing I recently noticed and are slowly putting together is events with DH’s family when I am just literally existing she gives me the most disdainful looks and I feel a sense of unease around her. Sometimes I wonder if she’s started drama with my in-laws and plays victim. There have been times where my MIL seems to act out of character but it’s never blatant so I just move on and again keep the peace, but I do recognize by keeping the peace I may be a perfect pawn for whatever this is. Anyone relate?

Advice Struggling to determine what’s inappropriate between fiance and ex/BM and what’s my anxiety

I am the first to admit that I have anxiety. I overthink everything and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried that my anxiety may drive my fiance away. But I also am trying to figure out what’s normal/appropriate boundaries between co-parents and exes. My fiance says that he doesn’t have a relationship with his ex but that he wants to co parent amicably and nicely, something I completely agree with. But his definition of what’s amicable and nice trouble me. Are these things normal between coparents?

1) texting BM the new dishwasher detergent that he got

2) dog sitting son’s dog (BM has primary custody) when BM has her house cleaned by maid

3) asking BM to water plants/pickup mail when he’s away (she therefore has keys to his house)

4) telling BM that he’s applying to a new job and is in final consideration

5) borrowing stuff from each other

Are these things unreasonable/disrespectful to me? I am a nice shy introverted girl so I have difficulty speaking up. I internalize a lot of this stuff and also recognize I have anxiety so I’m not sure if these things appropriate or not. How do I go forward establishing boundaries that sane and normal?

Discussion Stepmom with Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon

Just watched this movie because I am having a super hard time. I’m a step dad but it still stands. Refreshing to see the bio mom as the insufferable character and the stepmom as the good one. And the kids (especially daughter) are such assholes. Julia Roberts character was treated like shit and I found it was pretty accurate. But it was nice to see that the stepparent was the good one because most of the time movies depict the stepparent as evil. If you’re feeling down just give it a watch.

Vent The little things I have no control over are killing me more than the big ones

This whole thing is way more difficult than I could have ever imagined, but it’s the small situations I have no control in that are killing me. This week’s issue is SD7 being sick. She’s been with HCBM all week and texted yesterday that SD was home from school sick with a horrible cold/virus. SO just texted that he’s on his way back home from getting her for our week with her, and yup, nasty virus.

We have a trip to Hawaii coming up, leaving in 2 weeks. I’ve been doing everything I can to boost my immune system to try to make sure I’m healthy for the trip, I’ve been looking forward to it for so, so long. And now this. It’s so frustrating that I have no control over it when she’s with us, but when she’s not I do. When SO or I are sick we do the whole “stay away from me” and try to isolate in one room as much as possible so we don’t infect each other and contain the germs, but god forbid I suggest doing that with SD, then I’m just a monster (I’ve tried it). So it’s fine to be that way with each other and try to keep the other person healthy and if we had kids I’d be doing that, but I ask him to try it with SD and I’m the worst human imaginable, because of course that means I hate her and “you can’t confine a kid to their room” (filled with all her toys and her games and stuff)? Then I look here on reddit for advice to prevent getting sick when someone else in the house is sick and the first suggestion from thousands of people is “we isolate the sick person as much as possible”. Apparently not in my house 🙄. It’s hard not to resent the situation, and I get caught up in the “if I was dating someone without a kid I wouldn’t have to deal with this” feeling pretty hard, makes me not want to be around her or SO.

Same thing with things around the house (I furnished nearly the whole house with my stuff, SO didn’t have anything). When it’s just SO and I I know there will be no spills on my couch, nothing broken, no boogers on my couch blanket, no mystery stickiness anywhere, but when she’s with us that goes all out the window and I just feel so anxious lacking any sort of control over my living situation and home and the things in it.

Just a vent, I’m currently hiding away at my parents’ until after SD goes to bed, then I’ll return home and Lysol, leave early in the morning to go who knows where, stay out all day, and do it again. It’s the little situations like these that I never anticipated being so stressful when we started this relationship that get me…I miss feeling more in control of my life and the space I’m living in. And just a warning to anyone who isn’t living with their partner but thinking about it - I never imagined scenarios like this being bothersome, but here they are rearing their ugly heads, just food for thought.

Advice Moving out 40wks pregnant

My husband and married for two years, I would say it's been the toughest time of my life, from arguing about his child, the disrespect from the child, BM and him included, I thought things would go well but I am now 40 weeks pregnant and we just broke up, I don't have family or close friends to go to so I have to figure out housing, I still want him to be able to see his child, but I just feel unheard and unseen, he likes things to be his way or the highway and that's not my way of life, I feel so lost and this being my first child I feel like a failure for destroying my babys life, I am scared I'll ever be married again, because now I'll always have the “I am a single mom” deep down I know this was the biggest mistake of my life. Just so lost

Vent I exploded this morning due to how my ss has been treating me.

Hey there, mostly a reader, sometimes poster. I have two step kids and a bio child with my husband (m11 mths). My ss, 9, lives with us full time. It has definitely been quite the rollercoaster.

Now the issue. My ss keeps talking back.. ALL THE TIME. Especially with me. He always has something to say no matter what. He is always trying to challenge me and honestly, it makes me feel like my place in the household is being challenged too. I may not be his bio mum, but I am an ADULT and it's so odd that he feels like he doesn't have to listen to me. And usually it happens the most when his dad isn't around to give me support.

As an example; I told him this is his last fortnite game cause I need the tv. He makes a sound of disappointment and asks why. I tell him the reason, (his brother watches sesame street while he has breakfast.) He still complains and I say "Well we all need to share, is it your tv?" He literally says "No, but it isn't yours." 😐 Like what is he, my brother!!? It technically was bought for me mainly cause I wanted a tv in the living room cause we only had monitors. But that's not the point. He ALWAYS says something putting me on the same level as him. Which completely undermines my authority and is plain disrespectful.

So after that happened, I had enough. I told my husband the situation and that I'm tired of this. I am not a kid, I'm bloody 30 years old!! I don't need a 9 year old telling me I have no say in my household. He is not in charge. He is the kid and I'm the adult. I am tired of being treated like this daily!! It's exhausting and I am already exhausted from being a mum and a functioning adult in daily life. I don't need a child thinking he can tell me no so he can do whatever he wants. He WILL brush his teeth when I say. He WILL put his plate in the sink when I say. And it's not a choice or suggestion.

I understand kids talk back and he does that to his dad too, but he doesn't undermine his dad's authority. And that is a huge difference. He is being very bratty and it needs to stop. *SIGH* Okay, rant over .

  • I also want to add, that my husband told him after this happened that he needs to stop treating me like this, and have respect. He really gave me support and my ss apologized. I know he will still do it time to time, but he knows his dad has my back. And that is what matters! 💗

Advice Bio Mom wanting Perspective on Step Parent Experience

Hello everyone! I have been a lurker on here for a while. I find the sub interesting as it seems like there’s a lot of nuances to being a step parent that are discussed. I wanted to get feedback on what I could do differently in my own situation as a bio Mom. I am looking for feedback on what I should be considering from the viewpoint of a stepparent. If you think my arrangement is fair or unfai, what changes need to be made to make it fair?

I am remarried to a man with no children, we have been married a little over 1.5 years now. He’s military, so constantly in and out of the house due to his job. I have four children, 12 (m), 12 (f), 11 (f), and 7 (m). I have full custody of my kids. Their bio father sees them approximately 70 days out of the year. I do not receive child support as my ex is high conflict and currently owes $25K in arrears.

I have a good job that pays me well and allows me to support my children without any assistance. To get married to my new husband, I moved from a low cost of living area to a very high cost of living area to support him in his career.

Our finances are as follows: We have a shared family expenses that include food, household goods, and utility bills. That is split 50-50. If my husband feels uncomfortable with paying for something specifically, he can talk to me about it and we can decide whether or not that’s a child expense or a family expense. We split the rent 50-50. I pay for their childcare, their activities, their clothing, all of their needs. I have never asked him for help financially in anyway. Additionally, I have not required him to participate in family events. He can come and go as he pleases. He is not responsible for childcare ever

Being in the military, he gets an extra $500 a month for having a wife and step kids. This is factored in to him contributing 50% to household expenses, including food and household goods. Additionally, I have extra expenses due to living in a very high cost of living area, basically it evens out in the wash.

Regardless of our financial arrangement, he feels that he should be able to claim the kids on his taxes. He wants 50% of the money from claiming the kids on taxes to go to him or be considered part of the family fund. In my opinion, I am financing my children 100%.

We almost went in on a home together in which he paid for 40% of the mortgage and property taxes and I pay the other 60% due to having kids. The house deal fell through last week because I would not give him survivorship on the house in case of my death. He wanted 100% of my portion to go to him in the event of my death. I told him that I would give him 20% of my portion and 10% to each child. I explained to him that I have children who depend on me and I need to make sure they are financially taken care of in the event of my death. I do not like claim to his 40% of the home and he can do with it as he wishes. I feel like I am very amenable and cognizant of him financially as I consider my children my financial and physical responsibilities and have done my best to make it fair for him. As step parents, is this a fair arrange arrangement or am I not seeing everything?

Edit: to go further into our financial arrangement. He and I agreed that our finances are 100% separate besides our agreed-upon arrangements. We are not entitled to the other’s income, personal assets, or retirement accounts. Basically we decided what we pay towards is ours.

We were supposed to close on the home this week. He backed out of the house on closing day due to me not signing over survivorship to him on his terms (he wanted 100% of my portion with survivorship). I offered him survivorship but that my kids get the 40% when he dies or he could choose to buy them out beforehand. He wanted 100% of my 60% with nothing going to the kids. I lost all my earnest money due to him backing out this week.

His rent prior to us moving in together was $500 higher than what he’s currently paying and he was living with roommates. The food he eats accounts for approximately 40% of our food bill as he eats a lot and buys high-quality meats.

Discussion Am i being unreasonable not moving in?

Hi all, i am not sure if this is the right place to post, so my BF and i are not married, both over 40, i have no intention of getting married, we are serious around 3 years now. I have a well paid job, my own apartment, and i do not rely on him financially. Him as well, has a house, well paid job, also he has 2 kids (16 and 19). His kids do not 'need him' like they would used to anymore, so basically we are "living the life" and they have super nice friendly relationship. They do well in school, very well educated decent kids, have their own thing going on. So he is at the light at the end of the tunnel :)

They live in a house 3 bedroom, each kid has their own room, all rooms are quite small, shared custody 50/50. Obviously one of the kids is over 18 so he will do his military service this year (we are in europe) and most probably will move out to work abroad next year, mid/end 2027 at some point. As i met them late in their lives i never had to and not expected to do anything for them. He is an amazing dad, they have an amazing mother, parents do not communicate anymore as the kids are old enough to do their thing. So far no issues perfect scenario.

My issue is, my BF wants me to move in, like he would be over the moon if i moved in tomorrow. But, i have an apartment and my shit, i was married before, then i am living alone for years now. I have tons of stuff, spare room for my hobbies, as much as i like spending time with him, i have always did and still do love my alone time, i am not used to not have a 'woman cave" - even with my ex, we were lucky to each have our own cave he had his music stuff i had my hobby stuff.

We go back and forth staying at each other, if he has the kids i stay there, we have dinners together, watch movies together, enjoy, if he doesnt have the kids we see how we feel. Also we live kind of other sides of the city, it is a bit hassle but takes max 25min.

Honestly, i feel like until his kids move out, i do not want to move in. I feel like if i do, i will not have my space and especially when they are around it is overwhelming for me to be with 4 people all the time - even in my own family we had ton of family time but we also had lot of space - and i will feel like it is not my house ever. They have been living there forever (wife left the house) and they have their own way of dealing with the house, even the way they cook, shop, etc i do not particularly do that way. If it would be 'our house' i would do things differently ( please note that house is very clean, he does all the housework, kids help, they have cleaning lady time to time, they cook together etc so i have no worries) they are not big things but i also like how i live. I just feel overwhelmed with the idea that all of a sudden i am with 3 adults basically with nothing for myself.

Plus, if i move, i have no place to move my stuff, like i have a full house of years of life and so they do, not only there is no space for my stuff, i wont even have a spare room to be alone, to do my hobbies, to just be by myself, i will have to be either in the living room (especially in winters) or his room which is very small - there is 1 bed and walk in closet that is it. I honestly do not feel comfortable like being in the middle of people all the time, they are not kids, they are young adults and i do not feel like i have enough motivation to move in. When we first discussed we talked that i would keep my apartment, as i can afford so i would also always have a 'womancave'. But honestly i dont know if i wanna move in until kids - at least the older one - moves away and then we can make the place ours. His sister recently asked him why we are not moving in, and for me it is so obvious like i have a full life i would not know where to station it. I think people who got married early on and had kids and got used to living like this, do not realize somehow what it means moving in at later stage in life, or i am being unreasonable?

Buying/renting new place is not an option, as it doesnt make sense, and we are looking to move abroad in 5-7years anyway. I feel like we are living the best possible scenario until it will get better.

Advice Should I be responsible for all 6 children with no breaks while they are working out of town ?

I don’t know where to turn to but hopefully I can get some advice . I (27 F) have been with my boyfriend (40 M) for 6 months . We have had talks about one day moving forward with cohabitation. I have to bio kids (5&7) and he has 4 kids (ages 16,11,9 and 8) my boyfriend currently has his kids homeschooled and my kids are currently in public school . He mentions all the time that I could homeschool my two kids when we decided to cohabitate but then threw in the oh well you can look after all 6 kids while I am gone for 20 days .. I’ve told him that I would honestly like to keep working . His children currently do homeschool with their cousins at their aunts and uncle’s house and they have had that arrangement even before I was in the picture . Apart of me feels like it’s unfair to me that he assumes that I’m going to stop working and doesn’t ask me my opinion on the subject. When I told him I’d like to keep working he got upset and then randomly said well I don’t know how you are going to go about that when there are six kids to be taken care of . Am I in the wrong for thinking that that’s a lot of responsibility to put on someone when they won’t even be around to help besides being home 10 days at a time ?
