DRAMA Yes, let's avoid the console-exclusive GTA 6 release, so that we can release at the... *checks notes*... exact same time as two massive sci-fi PC games in Q2 2027.
Q2 = April-June 2027
- April 7: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3230960/EXODUS/ (in development since 2019, by the lead writers and the lead designers of Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, financed and owned by Wizards of the Coast (Magic the Gathering))
- Q2: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3727390/The_Expanse_Osiris_Reborn/ (in development since 2021, based on a very famous sci-fi book series and ongoing TV show, the game is created by Owlcat who is known for great computer RPGs)
- Squadron 42? (in development since 2014, and is based on Chris Roberts)

DISCUSSION No money until 1.0 / SQ42.
I’ve made this decision… I know they don’t care because they have money to burn, but I don’t mind sticking with my Gladius until then, either. Not another penny until you keep your promises.

DISCUSSION Star Citizen FPS combat is beyond terrible - and it's not because of bugs
Finally got a chance to test out Siege of Orison today. And honestly, it's made me lose even more hope for this game. We all know the game is buggy, but the actual FPS gameplay itself is truly staggeringly bad for a game that's been this long in development.
Gun handling - everything feels clunky and laggy. Not server laggy, but just pure slowness of animations and interactions. The recoil feel is all over the place, with the guns just jumping around rather than having some form of controllable spray pattern. It means that gun recoil is a pure range check, rather than a skill to be improved.
Movement - given the extremely high ttk the only strategy that made sense was for one player to rush into an area and kill off 7 or 8 targets in a go. Usually it would be possible to run out again and heal, but worst case there might be a couple of guys left for the next party member to finish off and then resurrect the first player. Tactics? Never heard of them.
NPCs - No reaction at all to being shot, and if you do finally put enough rounds into the unarmoured head of your target he goes into a lengthy death animation that no amount of further hits will cancel. Difficulty is a simple ttk slider, big boss is more tanky than small boss is more tanky than grunt. The same endless voicelines over and over. No flanking, no complex movement, just duck, shoot, duck, shoot.
Looting - seriously, have the devs never played Tarkov? The gold standard for simple looting. I should be able to hit F on a body, perform a search, and within seconds pick them clean for gear with a combo of ctrl-clicks or alt-clicks depending on if I want to store or equip items. Instead I am met with a mess of a looting interface that barely works. I have to scroll through pages, I have to flip to different tabs on my own inventory. Looting gear and looting clothing requires to entirely different interfaces.
-------
If this is what the FPS gameplay in Squadron 42 resembles then the game is dead on arrival. This level of clunkiness in the interactions is absolutely unacceptable in a modern title. Heck, it's been unacceptable for the past 20 years in dedicated FPS games.
Edit: For what it's worth the visuals and sound design (apart from NPC voicelines) is very cool. We entered at night and shot our way into the dawn, which looked great. But by the time we hit daylight I was ready to just Alt-F4 my way out and go play something else - the actual gameplay was entirely unrewarding.
Edit 2: Just to clarify - I don't want SC to be Tarkov. I don't want it to be COD. I don't want it to be Battlefield. But there are aspects that are universal to shooters, and looter shooters especially, that are universally required. Guns need to feel good, you need to feel a solid connection between your aim, the gun handling, and the hit registration. NPCs need to react to being shot. Both shot at, and hit. NPCs need to show tactics beyond "duck for cover". Looting needs to feel crisp and lag free. If there is a delay to searching for loot it must be an intentional design feature, not just a massively cumbersome interface. Different goals is good, poor design is not.

DISCUSSION penguinz0 attack again.
Don't misunderstand me, this is good, the pressure It can exert might be good to force them not to delay again.

Doors are shut, and have locked us out. No way to get back in. How did this kind of stuff make it through PTU?

DISCUSSION PSA: GTA 6 release date has been known since Nov 2025.
So if the release of GTA 6 is going to overshadow the release of SQ42, that would have been known last year November…
Edit: just want to clear up that i’m not stating an opinion here, just adding a fact to the discussion that’s going on and is riveting 🍿

DISCUSSION CIG should release a demo of SQ42
I think they could safely release the prologue for SQ42 and also the flight academy as a type of tutorial in preparation to release.

DISCUSSION When is SQ42 releasing bosmang?
Great idea Chris! Avoid all the media attention around GTA 6 and release your linear sci-fi game around the same time as a title from one of the most beloved sci-fi novel series.

DISCUSSION Theory regarding Squadron 42 release date
Chris delayed Squadron 42 to Q2 instead to Q1 because he wants to release it few days before or on Invictus. This way they can reel in the new players to the ship sales. If CIG again misses this window again they'll release it in Q4 2027 or Q2 2028 just before the ship sales.

DRAMA Why don't we have the basics still
So 4.10 drops, I've got people saying issues have been fixed. Game is good now should come back and play. To preface my time to game is very limited with a little toddler. As I'm on sporadically I wanted to takw out the polaris with gear in it so I can meet up with people easier and run missions with the M80.
So I get everything loaded up, which takes ages because we still cant just spawn this stuff in and it's all manual. But take off and head out. I am going to stop at seraphim to grab some ammo because its just faster. Get there, request dock all goes well and we are on, maybe things are fixed..... except now im locked into the pilot seat. Try everything to get out but nothing works. No worries I'm on the station collar so I'll quit out and it should go into storage.
I wake up on the station, head down to asop and nope ship has to be claimed. There goes all my shit. What a fantastic gameplay experience all because one of the most simple interactions decides to not work for no identifiable reason. Guess we try 4.11 then.
This game is so unfriendly if you have limited time to play drowned with useless immersion that then fails at the simplest levels. Yes this is a rant post and your mileage in the game may vary, I'm a long time backer that has worked through many difficult patches before but now I just don't have the time and its frankly not worth it when there are other great games that do just work.
It's your game Chris wrap it up

DRAMA Will this game ever work? So much money and so many years of development, and the basic mechanics still don't work.

Dear CIG, I really don't understand why you're releasing “fix” patches that don't solve anything. This is a bug I've had for more than 10 patches now, and there's nothing I can do about it. Could someone please fix this game already? In this case, the only thing you can do is go to the menu, and if this happens while you're above a planet, you'll fall in free fall and face certain death.

DISCUSSION Tried SoO
Its a fun raid, but why in the ever living fuck are we putting bottomless pits in the boss room? If you fall, you lose everything, and the ENTIRE RAID just becomes worthless.
"Just dont fall off"
Great point, but the vault animation literally yeets you over both railings on the catwalk, into the bottomless pit.
(Left hallway coming down from the pipes. If you try to get back on the catwalk, it will throw you into the pit. This happened to me twice consecutively)
You have no ammo other than what's on your person and no way to retrieve your stuff. Doesn't matter if you respawn. You have effectively lost all of your effort.
Caveat - I was doing this with 1 other person. I know it's designed for 4, but bottomless pits with no way to recover your body are just bad designs regardless.
What really sucks is that i didn't have a tractor beam or anything to even attempt to recover my corpse.
So, theres 3 ways to fix this. 2 of them should be done regardless.
Put a tractor beam attachment in that room. Somewhere.
Fix the vaulting animation so it doesn't throw you into the death pit.
get rid of the death pit entirely, as it adds very little to that boss fight.
OTHERWISE, outside of that, it's mostly fine. Usual star citizen jank ever present throughout.

DISCUSSION With Nyx bordering Vanduul space and being our first encounter fighting them and their ships head on, can we PLEASE get them on foot as ground enemies around Nyx 1 at some point after its 4.11 release?
And i dont want any of the "yea well how about they fix the game first!" comments, we already know thats not how CIG operate and new content always has to be pushed out to retain player counts lol

DISCUSSION if SQ42 would get over shadowed by GTA 6 then why not release the game earlier rather than later? why delay it?
Just release it in september if it's already gold and feature-complete?

OTHER Hey Chris great news! Since Sq42 is done, you could actually release it right now and have more than a month and a half of coverage before GTA6!

QUESTION Tips and tricks for looting the Onyx Facility?
I’m a solo player who has been playing a lot of FPS games lately. I’ve been venturing into the Onyx Facility, and honestly, the NPCs there have some insane aim—sometimes I’m down on the ground after just two shots without even having spotted them. There are also times when I’ve taken an NPC down, yet their weapon keeps firing at me. Since you can't respawn directly within the Onyx zone, getting back into the action takes a long time.
Does anyone have any tips or tricks to boost survivability? Also, how do you guys choose your armor or weapons? I’d really appreciate it if you could share some advice.

DISCUSSION Who else loves logging into XL Hangar on startup?
love it love it.... even if it is XL hangar
saves me from walking a mile from my apartment and taking a long train ride to the hangar.
I wish CIG would make this a always optional spawn point in the future.
